A cermet is a composite material composed of ceramic (cer) and metal (met) materials. A cermet is ideally designed to have the optimal properties of both a ceramic, such as high temperature resistance and hardness, and those of a metal, such as the ability to undergo plastic deformation. The metal is used as a binder for an oxide, boride, or carbide. Generally, the metallic elements used are nickel, molybdenum, and cobalt. Depending on the physical structure of the material, cermets can also be metal matrix composites, but cermets are usually less than 20% metal by volume. Cermets are used in the manufacture of resistors (especially potentiometers), capacitors, and other electronic components which may experience high temperature. Cermets are used instead of tungsten carbide in saws and other brazed tools due to their superior wear and corrosion properties. Titanium nitride (TiN), titanium carbonitride (TiCN), titanium carbide (TiC) and similar can be brazed like tungsten carbide if properly ...

The plant |i |Typhonium flagelliforme|/i|, commonly known as “rodent tuber” in Malaysia, is often used as a health supplement and traditional remedy for alternative cancer therapies, including leukemia. This study aimed to evaluate |i |in vitro|/i| anti-leukemic activity of dichloromethane extract/fraction number 7 (DCM/F7) from |i |T. flagelliforme|/i| tuber on human T4 lymphoblastoid (CEMss) cell line. The DCM extract of tuber has been fractionated by column chromatography. The obtained fractions were evaluated for its cytotoxicity toward CEMss cells as well as human primary blood lymphocytes (PBLs). Assessment of apoptosis produced by the most active fraction was evaluated by various microscopic techniques and further confirmation of apoptosis was done by terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) assay. Phytochemical screening was done by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results shows that 7 out of 12 fractions showed significant

Abstract: A review. This paper presents results of research of syngas generation by oxidative or steam reforming of hydrocarbons and oxygenates in structured catalytic reactors. Development of structured catalysts included design of active components stable to coking and sintering while efficiently transforming different types of fuels into syngas. It was based upon constructing nanocomposites comprised of components efficient in fuel mols. activation (Ni, Cu, precious metals, etc) and ceria-containing mixed oxides which provide a high rate of oxidants (O2, H2O, CO2) activation and supply of oxygen-containing species to the perimeter of metal particles to consume activated C-H-O fragments. The catalyst development was linked to reactor design. To ensure efficient heat and mass -transfer management required for high performance of structured catalytic reactors, several types of heat-conducting monolithic substrates comprised of refractory alloys and cermets (including microchannel structures) ...

A matrix addressable flat panel display includes a flat cathode operable for emitting electrons to an anode when an electric field is produced across the surface of the flat cathode by two electrodes placed on each side of the flat cathode. The flat cathode may consist of a cermet or amorphic diamond or some other combination of a conducting material and an insulating material such as a low effective work function material. The electric field produced causes electrons to hop on the surface of the cathode at the conducting-insulating interfaces. An electric field produced between the anode and the cathode causes these electrons to bombard a phosphor layer on the anode.

We have developed cermet membranes that nongalvanically separate hydrogen from gas mixtures. The highest measured hydrogen flux was 20.0 cm{sup 3} (STP)/min-cm{sup 2} for an ANL-3a membrane at 900 C. For ANL-3 membranes with thickness of 40-500 {micro}m, hydrogen permeation is limited by the bulk diffusion of hydrogen through the metal phase. The effect of hydrogen partial pressure on permeation rate confirmed this conclusion, suggesting that higher permeation rates may be obtained by decreasing the membrane thickness. Permeation rate in a syngas atmosphere for times up to 190 h showed no degradation in performance, which indicates that ANL-3 membranes may be suitable for long-term, practical hydrogen separation.

The common technology for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) is based on a cermet (ceramic-metal composite) anode of nickel with yttria stabilized zirconia (YSZ), often used as the supporting structure. One of the main limitations of this technology is the tolerance of the anode towards reduction and oxidation (RedOx) cycles. In this study, two techniques are used to quantify the anode expansion after a RedOx cycle of the nickel at different temperatures. The first method considers the anode expansion above the electrolyte fracture limit by measuring the crack width in the electrolyte layer. In the second method, the anode porosity is measured using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) image quantification. The same measurement techniques are used to quantify anode expansion after consecutive RedOx cycles at constant temperature. The quantification technique is then applied to cells tested in real stack conditions. The cell corners can undergo several RedOx cycles depending on stack design and fuel ...
In the present work, WC-12Co based cermet clad was developed on AISI 304 stainless steel using microwave hybrid heating technique. The experimental trials were carried out in a 1.4 kW industrial multimode microwave applicator. The paper explains the major events occurring during microwave irradiation and formation of clad. The developed clads were subsequently characterised through field emission scanning electron microscopy equipped with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, assessment of porosity and microhardness. The WC-12Co clads developed with an approximate thickness of 1 mm, illustrated excellent metallurgical bonding with substrate. The microstructure of the WC-12Co clad mainly consists of skeleton structured carbides embedded in tough metallic phase. The phase analysis of the developed clads indicate the presence of various stable and complex carbides like Co{sub 6}W{sub 6}C, Co{sub 3}W{sub 3}C and Fe{sub 6}W{sub 6}C. The uniform distribution of such carbides with ...
