Unlike the model lab yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which has been widely used in the mitochondrial biogenesis field, C. albicans is not subject to the Crabtree effect, hence grows aerobically in glucose when oxygen is present. Although gene expression profiling along with proteomics has led to advances in diagnosis, classification and prognosis, our ability to target many cancers has been further limited due to a lack of therapeutic options. The use of patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models in the setting of a rare malignancy is discussed here by Kamili et al, with the successful establishment of new model systems.

There are four active projects in my lab, all devoted to taking advantage of the ecological and behavioral diversity of the microbial world. One is studying interactions between gut microbes and their hosts, using a new model system, planaria (flatworms) as the experimental animals. The second is a bioremediation project, isolating bacteria which catabolize gasoline as their source of carbon and energy, and using those bacteria alone or in combination to render gasoline contaminated soil safe for normal use. The third project uses bacteriophage (bacteria-specific viruses) as an antibacterial agent for the skin disease acne, targeting the bacterial species that causes serious acne lesions. Using the in vitro mammalian endothelial cell line EA.hy926, we first show that cell migration and angiogenesis, as estimated by wound assay and tube formation respectively, are antagonized by 2ME. In zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae, dose-dependent exposure to 2ME diminishes (1) larval angiogenesis, (2) leukocyte recruitment to damaged lateral line neuromasts and (3) retards the lateral line primordium in its migration along the body. Novel findings of the current study include: 1) significant increase in fractional myocardial dietary fatty acid uptake in IGT+ individuals not explained by difference in age, body fat, central obesity markers, or sex; 2) an association between the latter myocardial metabolic abnormality and reduction in systolic and diastolic left ventricular functions and increased myocardial oxidative metabolism; and 3) no significant changes in liver and skeletal muscle dietary fatty acid uptake in IGT+ individuals. The present results extend the association between increased myocardial NEFA uptake and oxidation and IGT observed during fasting (16) to postprandial dietary fatty acids. Establishment of new model systems is imperative for investigating the developmental basis of organismal diversity. Presently, such models are available for only two orders of Arachnida-Cupiennius salei and Parasteatoda tepidariorum (Araneae), and Archegozetes longisetosus and Tetranychus urticae (Acari). The putative clade Dromopoda uniting Scorpiones, Pseudoscorpiones, Solifugae and Opiliones is unrepresented.
