Canine left ventricular wall metabolites (ATP, creatine phosphate, glycogen, glucose, glucose-6-phosphate, and lactate) were assessed in the ischemic region of the wall after 17 minutes of ligation of the left anterior descending coronary artery at its midlevel. Variations in the degree of lactate accumulation were found between different sites in the same ischemic region and between the outer and the inner left ventricular wall at the same site. High levels of lactate were associated with S-T segment elevation in the epicardial electrocardiogram, but no lactate accumulation or only mild lactate accumulation was found at isoelectric sites. Based on the methods of (Daum et al., 1982) and (Hewitt et al., 2012), we have established the use of Candida albicans as a new model system to study mitochondrial biogenesis. This dimorphic yeast provides an excellent system to investigate the coordination of mitochondrial biogenesis with other cellular networks including cellular metabolism and the cell cycle. Unlike the model lab yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae, which has been widely used in the mitochondrial biogenesis field, C. albicans is not subject to the Crabtree effect, hence grows aerobically in glucose when oxygen is present. Therefore the control of mitochondrial biogenesis in C. albicans is more typical of eukaryotic cells. Although gene expression profiling along with proteomics has led to advances in diagnosis, classification and prognosis, our ability to target many cancers has been further limited due to a lack of therapeutic options. One is studying interactions between gut microbes and their hosts, using a new model system, planaria (flatworms) as the experimental animals. The second is a bioremediation project, isolating bacteria which catabolize gasoline as their source of carbon and energy, and using those bacteria alone or in combination to render gasoline contaminated soil safe for normal use. The third project uses bacteriophage (bacteria-specific viruses) as an antibacterial agent for the skin disease acne, targeting the bacterial species that causes serious acne lesions. Herein, we demonstrate that the effects of this antiangiogenic steroid can be readily assayed in live zebrafish, introducing a convenient and robust new model system as a screening tool for both single cell and collective cell migration assays. Using the in vitro mammalian endothelial cell line EA.hy926, we first show that cell migration and angiogenesis, as estimated by wound assay and tube formation respectively, are antagonized by 2ME. In zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae, dose-dependent exposure to 2ME diminishes (1) larval angiogenesis, (2) leukocyte recruitment to damaged lateral line neuromasts and (3) retards the lateral line primordium in its migration along the body. This study was undertaken to assess the contribution of Doppler echocardiography to the quantification of aortic valve regurgitation. Ultrasound examination was performed by recording aortic arch blood flow from the suprasternal notch. A non-invasive index of valve regurgitation was obtained by calculating the ratio between the maximal amplitude of forward flow during systole and the amplitude of retrograde flow during diastole measured at the onset of the R wave of the electrocardiogram. This index was compared with semiquantitative data derived from supravalvular aortography in 93 patients. In pure aortic regurgitation (67 patients) the results showed a high correlation coefficient between Doppler and angiographic estimates.
