Ceremonial first pitch - Wikipedia
The ceremonial first pitch is a longstanding ritual of baseball in which a guest of honor throws a ball to mark the end of pregame festivities and the start of the game. Originally, the guest threw a ball from his/her place in the grandstand to the pitcher or catcher of the home team, but the ritual changed after Ronald Reagan threw the first pitch on the field at an unscheduled appearance at a Baltimore Orioles game. Now, the guest stands in front of the pitchers mound and throws towards home plate. He or she may also sometimes stand on the mound (as a pitcher would). The recipient of the pitch is usually a player from the home team. The ceremonial thrower may be a notable person (dignitary, celebrity, former player, etc.) who is in attendance, an executive from a company that sponsors the team (especially when that company has sponsored that nights promotional giveaway), or a person who won the first pitch opportunity as a contest prize. Often, especially in the minor leagues, multiple first ...
Chinese ritual bronzes - Wikipedia
Sets and individual examples of ritual bronzes (in Chinese: 中国青铜器) survive from when they were made mainly during the Chinese Bronze Age. Ritual bronzes create quite an impression both due to their sophistication of design and manufacturing process, but also because of their remarkable durability. From around 1650 BCE, these elaborately decorated vessels were deposited as grave goods in the tombs of royalty and the nobility, and were evidently produced in very large numbers, with documented excavations finding over 200 pieces in a single royal tomb. They were produced for an individual or social group to use making in ritual offerings of food and drink to his or their ancestors and other deities or spirits. Such ceremonies generally took place in family temples or ceremonial halls over tombs. These ceremonies can be seen as ritual banquets in which both living and dead members of a family were to supposed participate. Details of these ritual ceremonies are preserved through early ...

NYC Parks Commissioner Mitchell J. Silver, FAICP, last week joined Tokyos Governor Yoichi Masuzoe, President of Prospect Park Alliance Sue Donoghue, Commissioner of the Mayors Office for International Affairs Penny Abeywardena, local elected officials and Japanese delegates for a ceremonial planting of a Cherry Blossom tree in Prospect Park. The tree is a seedling from one of the three most famous cherry trees in Japan, the Miharu Takizakura tree in Fukushima, whose estimated age is more than 1,000 years old. Its seeds were selected to commemorate Tokyos relationship with both the City of New York and the areas of the Tohoku Region devastated by the earthquake and tsunami on March 11, 2011.. The weeping cherry tree seedling will grow to be 12 meters tall with long, gently drooping branches that spread up to 22 meters long. Parks and Prospect Park Alliance staff staked the tree and built a protective fence around it to help support its growth, and a historical sign was placed nearby to convey ...

Vintage Navajo Ceremonial Basket - Wrights Gallery
According to Navajo Ben Gorman, this is a traditional Navajo basket design with red, white, and black colors. The black design symbolizes the darkness (night) and clouds that bring the rain. The white part inside the black design represents the (four) sacred mountains…The outside white area represents the dawn and is tied together with the outside rim which represents a persons thoughts, prayers, and values. The red part within the black design represents the life-giving rays of the sun.. The pathway that leads from the center towards the rim faces east, toward the dawn, and can be felt by the officiant, even in the dark.. This is a classic Navajo ceremonial basket, which we have had for many years, so artist unknown. It represents the Navajo ideal of nature in balance.. It is hand-woven and entirely traditional in materials: the red is mountain mahogany root, or dyed with red ocher; the black is dyed with pinon pitch, or juniper ashes and black alder; the cream color is natural un-dyed ...

Incense burning tied to asthma risk in some kids | Reuters
By Amy NortonNEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Children from homes with regular incense burning have a higher risk of developing asthma, according to a Taiwanese study that hints a particular gene variant could be involved.Among nearly 3,800 middle-school children, researchers found three percent had current asthma and more than five percent had wheezing during exercise. By comparison, nearly one in 10 kids in the U.S. suffer from asthma, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.Kids whose parents burned incense were 36 percent more likely to have current asthma and 64 percent more likely to wheeze when they exercised.Of the children, 48 percent carried no copies of a gene variant known as GSTT1, which helps regulate a family of enzymes that protect body cells from oxidative damage -- including that caused by cigarette smoke or other toxic chemicals.People without this genetic variant have been found to have higher risks of allergies and asthma. Similarly, such children in the Taiwanese
Mundan Sanskar Or Chadakarana Ritual! - GAHOIMUMBAI
Mundan Sanskar Or Chadakarana Ritual!. The next significant ceremony after Annaprasana (babys first feeding) in a Hindu childs life is the Mundan Sanskar or Chadakarana ritual when the baby has his first hair cut. Ritual Individuation and Ritual Change » Brill Online
What makes a ritual performance an instance of one ritual and not another? When we observe unfamiliar rituals, how do we know where one ends and the next begins? Is there a principled way of distinguishing mere preparations from the ritual proper? Can rituals change, and how do we know if they have changed? Current ritual studies methods give us no systematic means of answering such questions. Individuation is a familiar and fundamental concept in philosophy, and it should belong to the methodological toolbox of every student of ritual. This paper provides a solid introduction to some basic problems in ritual studies theory, illustrated by detailed examples from Episcopal liturgy and ritual in New Ireland (Papua New Guinea).

Painful rituals: good for some, not for others
Their results clearly supported most of their hypotheses. Using independent raters to gauge the emotional intensity of rituals from 74 cultures in the Human Relations Area Files - a massive compendium of anthropological data for societies around the world - the researchers found that the frequency of ritual enactment was inversely proportional to intensity. That is, the more emotionally arousing a ritual is, the less often its likely to be carried out.. Whats more, it was the negative emotional intensity of rituals that was the strongest predictor of a rituals frequency. Rituals that elicited intense but positive emotions were sometimes carried out quite often, while strongly painful or aversive rituals - like adolescent circumcision rites - tended to be enacted very rarely.. At the societal level, cultures with high levels of agriculture were much more likely to take part in low-intensity, high-repetition rituals than societies with less agriculture. The authors hypothesized that the ...

Genpuku - Wikipedia
During these periods, primarily male members of the aristocracy between the ages of seven and fifteen engaged in genpuku.[1][2][5] The ceremony was generally a precursor to obtaining court cap (kanmuri) and rank.[5] Parents chose when to hold their childrens genpuku based on a number of factors, including the arrival of a suitable opportunity, the childs readiness for court service, the presence of one or more influential court backers, and the parents ability to finance the ceremony.[4] Once it was deemed an appropriate time for a child to undergo genpuku, a variety of preparations were made for the upcoming ceremony. The child had to acquire a capping parent, usually a person of influence, who would help the child don the ritual clothing of adulthood, most significantly a ceremonial court hat (kanmuri).[4] Both the capping parent and the biological parents made preparations for the ceremony, but the capping parent was more active in making arrangements.[4] The genpuku ceremony itself ...
Oceans For Emotions: Following rituals is comforting - Victoria Advocate - Victoria, TX
Sing, O heavens; and be joyful O earth and break forth into singing.. - Isaiah 48:13. I love rituals. Rituals are always there for us to do things without having to decide each time what to do. All you have to do is follow the ritual.. When my Best Fishing Friend, and I first spot our bay water, we break out into our ritualistic song, which is a poor rendition of Hello, ocean, my old friend; Weve come to talk with you again. We sing at the top of our voices, and we may be causing a tsunami on the island of Hawaii. We are good fisherwomen, but we are not asked to sing in many choirs, especially myself.. The next ritual that we follow is that we wave to the ocean. And guess what? It always waves a welcoming wave back.. Next, we always stop on the crabbing bridge where a sign reads, Do not park on bridge. We only stop a minute to see which way the tide is going.. Tides are the most ritualistic rituals, and their highs and lows can be predicted for up to hundreds of years as long as there is a ...

The medicine man enters the outer vestibule of the sacred healing chamber. He dons the ceremonial vestments and performs the ritual ablutions, purifying himself for the healing ritual that is about to commence. Putting on identical masks, he and his acolytes enter the chamber, to which all others are forbidden entrance. The man they are healing is ready, having been ushered into a deep trance by another shaman using a magical elixir. Within the chamber are the ritual implements, which have themselves been purified, and which none but the initiated are allowed to touch. The medicine man calls for each implement in turn, handed to him by an acolyte. He uses these in a ritual scarification procedure that removes a small part of the ill mans body. When he awakens from the trance, the man is magically healed, though some further ceremonies are required before he is able to leave the grounds of the temple of healing.. The role of religious and spiritual belief and practice in coping and adjusting to spousal bereavement in later life. -...
The present thesis reports four studies, two qualitative and two quantitative. Study 1 was a longitudinal follow-up of survivors from a previous study of spousal bereavement, and investigated experiences of longer term coping and adjustment. Results identified that participants used both religious and secular resources in adjustment and that those with a strong religious belief reported adjustment marked by the least difficulties. Study 2 focused on older adults with a strong Christian belief and aimed to identify the religious content and practice most important in coping with spousal bereavement. Interpretative phenomenological analysis revealed four main themes: benevolent religious cognition, Biblical assurances, religious ritual, and spiritual capital, that in different ways were related to meaning reconstruction. As religious ritual seemed important yet is under researched, Study 3 aimed to develop the first scale of its kind to measure religious ritual. A 35-item scale was developed, ...

About two years ago, I moved back to China from the United States . On my return, I visited the Longhua Temple in Shanghai to burn incense before Buddha. There I noticed many lay Buddhists who spent hours alone with the sculpture of Buddha, muttering prayers; they all seemed to have entered another state of mind, as though they were hypnotized. I was deeply moved by the power of the sculpture and the allure of such power, attracting people to burn incense and to pray. The temple floor was covered with ash which leaked from the giant incense burner. Seeing this image of ash conjured a feeling inside of me: it was a beautiful material and it moved me greatly. These ash remains speak to the fulfillment of millions of hopes, dreams and blessings. It was here that I finally discovered the ingredient I had been looking for to pave the way for new work. Incense burning is commonly practiced by Han people and other ethnically Chinese groups as a way of honoring familial ancestors, as well as worshipping ...
female genital mutilation
Theres a Senegalese proverb: The grandmothers heart is the school where one prepares for life.. But what if westernization has made that heart less available to young people, especially girls?. The standard practice for health and development workers looking to change unproductive traditional behaviors, like female genital mutilation, teenage pregnancy, and forced marriage, is to focus on the younger generation, which distances them from their tribal culture.. But in Senegal, The Grandmother Project has taken the opposite tack. It might seem counter-intuitive to enlist village grandmothers, the people responsible for FMB/C (female genital mutilation and cutting) but this approach has been very successful in a series of programs.. They begin by helping all members of the community to talk together about what has gone right, and then to decide what practices they want to end. When grandmothers understand the long term effects of some traditional practices, it is they who become the agents of ...

Preventing rat lungworm disease | News, Sports, Jobs - Maui News
So far, the state Department of Health confirms six people infected by rat lungworm, with three cases still under investigation.. The disease stems from a parasitic worm, Angiostrongylus cantonensis, the adult form of which is only found in rodents. Infected rats pass the larvae in their feces, which are then ingested by snails, slugs and other mollusks.. We humans can then be infected by eating these snails or slugs, most often while they are hidden in produce. But really you can be infected by ingesting anything that has been tainted by the slime trail of the slugs or snails, including drinking water or eating freshwater animals such as prawns, frogs or crabs.. Most recently some individuals on Hawaii Island contracted the disease after drinking homemade kava, a ceremonial beverage that was left out in uncovered buckets. After consuming the kava, it was noticed that there was a slug at the bottom of the ceremonial bowl; the individuals became ill a few weeks later with two confirmed cases of ...
Baptism is the ceremony in which a person becomes a member of the Family of Jesus Christ and God; - GCSE Religious Studies ...
Introduction. R.S. Coursework- Baptism AO1 Baptism is the ceremony in which a person becomes a member of the Family of Jesus Christ and God; so it is seen as a sacrament. A Sacrament is an outward sign of the giving of Gods grace and salvation to a person. Baptism is one of the seven sacraments in some Christian Churches. Many Christian traditions believe in Baptism however only The Salvation Army and The Society of Friends (Quakers) do not accept Baptism or the Eucharist as they feel there is no need to show any outward signs of personal beliefs. I will now describe an Infant Baptismal ceremony which is from the Roman Catholic tradition. Other Churches that practise this type of Baptism are: The Anglican Church, Methodist, Orthodox and United Reform Church. The Baptism ceremony takes place at a Church at a font during a service of Holy Communion and begins with the Priest waiting at the door to welcome the Parents, Godparents and the child which signifies a Christians entry into the church. ...

Farrow: First of all, the people of Phnom Penh have been extraordinarily supportive in all kinds of ways...The trouble we experienced this morning...none of it come from the people themselves. Our intention was to have a ceremony which is again is to light the flame. Each time we say this prayer...Its intended to represent those who perished, all those who were lost but also to celebrate the courage of those who survived, and the commitment that we share for an end to mass atrocities everywhere. So far our flame lighting ceremonies have gone very smoothly and very movingly. The reasons are best known to themselves. Our permission to have this ceremony on the sight of the memorial was revoked. Yesterday we found that out....So we restructured our ceremony to eliminate the flame and make the flame a flower. As we were not allowed on the premises of the genocide museum we would leave our flowers just to honor the victims and the survivors, but then the streets were cordoned off so it was ...
INKED RITUAL Tattoo Care | Anti-Fade Serum
Inked Ritual is the most advanced tattoo protection and brand new to the tattoo industry.. Tattoo fading is the result of getting older and aging skin. Part of the aging process is the breakdown of collagen and elastin inside the skins dermis layer. This leads to blurred lines, faded colors, and washed-out looking ink.. Inked Ritual Anti-Fade Serum keeps your tattoos bold and vibrant from the inside out.. This intensive skin rejuvenating serum nourishes and repairs aging skin, below the epidermis. Inked Rituals transdermal technology transports active ingredients deep into the dermis skin layer. Inked Ritual is different than moisturizer creams, lotions, or tattoo balms.. Moisturizers are thick and leave a film on the surface of your skin (epidermis). This film seals and locks in moisture, which can give your tattoos a temporary glow.. Inked Ritual keeps your skin hydrated, healthy, and youthful deep below the epidermis. Its your skins first line of defense to stop tattoo fading. Inked ...

Detroit doctor arrested for performing female genital mutilation on young girls | God Reports
The Department of Justice is committed to stopping female genital mutilation in this country, and will use the full power of the law to ensure that no girls suffer such physical and emotional abuse.. Acting U.S. Attorney Daniel Lemisch decried the procedures brutality. Female genital mutilation constitutes a particularly brutal form of violence against women and girls. It is also a serious federal felony in the United States. The practice has no place in modern society and those who perform FGM on minors will be held accountable under federal law.. The allegations detailed in todays criminal complaint are disturbing. The FBI, along with its law enforcement partners, are committed to doing whatever necessary to bring an end to this barbaric practice and to ensure no additional children fall victim to this procedure, said Special Agent in Charge David Gelios.. The FBI believes there could be more victims. They set up a tip line for anyone who has any information pertaining to the illegal ...

06W: 2A, 2A06S: 10, 10A 2A. In 06W at 2A, 12.1 The Ritual Life of South Asia (Identical to Religion 79, pending Faculty approval). As the birthplace of numerous religious traditions (including Hinduism, Buddhism and Jainism), and as the home of the largest cohort of Muslims in the modern world, the South Asian subcontinent functions as a remarkable melting pot of sacred doctrine and ritual practice. Contemporary events demonstrate, however, that the region can also serve as a cauldron of hatred, intolerance and violence. To explore this world of remarkable religiosity, we will focus not on sacred texts or ancient history, but on the ritual practices that infuse daily life in India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. The importance of these religious rituals is reflected not only in terms of vast public and private participation, but also in the attempts by the state and its various leaders to harness the power- -be it spiritual, economic or political--that ritual can often unleash. Many African people believe that an individual doesnt exist without a name. With this in mind it is not surprising that a great importance is placed on giving names in traditional ceremonies throughout African communities. It is believed that as the mother gave physical life to the child, it was the role of the father to give it a name. Both the parents and grandmothers choose the names for the child. The Yoruba naming ceremony is very traditional. Yoruba naming ceremony participators consist of the father, mother, baby, siblings, leader, a community member, ritual foods, and invited guests. In Africa, this ceremony would take place outside. In the U.S., the ceremony usually takes place in the home of the family. The guests begin arriving early in the afternoon. They bring gifts of money and other baby things. After about an hour, the ritual gathering takes place. The leader explains the foods and objects around the ritual table to the baby. As he does this he declares the symbolic meaning of ...
About Testimonials - World Without Parasites
A word about our testimonials: At the end of 2013 a plainclothes cop showed up at our door to deliver (serve) a letter from the Idaho State Attorney, who we were advised to contact immediately. The govt official on the phone threatened to shut us down over the casual, single mention of the word, cure on our FAQ page.. I had used the word in response to a customers question and the context was that the cure rate for a specific illness was high with zappers, based on simple observation over the years. I always stress that zappers are not cure-alls, of course. We were extorted to remove that word but, at the same time, all of the cancer cure testimonials disappeared from the Testimonials page, which we assume was the result of federal govt hacking. That indicated to Carol and I that the agenda to destroy our business is a federal one and that the Idaho Attorney was just being a stooge for the feds. The parasitic pharmaceutical and medical cartels are directly threatened people like us and they ...
Fudo Myo-O - Introducing Japanese Deities: Meguro Fudo Temple
This hokku is from the first month (February) of 1816, when Issa was in and around his hometown. It seems to be based on a memory from the time Issa lived in the city of Edo, and it refers to large-scale ceremonies and the annual first fair of the new year held on 1/28 at Ryusenji Temple on the outskirts of the big city. The temple was better known as the Meguro Fudo-son Temple, since the Tendai Tantric school temple was dedicated to the Indian fire god Fudo (Acala), who plays an important role in Buddhism as a manifestation of the Sun Buddha Dainichi. As such, Fudo is called a Wisdom King and represents the purifying power of fire: he holds a sword and has an angry face, since he burns away deluded desires and confronts evil, purifying it into good. The stone statue of Fudo at Meguro Temple is famous for having fierce black eyes (me-guro) as he stands protecting a small lake whose water, fed by two waterfalls, was bathed in by pilgrims praying for purification and protection from epidemics. Indian Temples & Iconography: Surviving original Shiva temples.
Another completely amazing temple and grand at the same time is that of Kailashnatha temple. The interesting part of this tempe is that it is right in the middle of brahmanical, buddhist and jaina caves. Tp top it all it is a museum of architecture that displays the sculptural supremacy of three dynasties that ruled the indian sub continent parallely - the chalukyas, pallavas and the rashtrakutas. there is cultural warfare written all across the walls of this temple. Apart from depicting various forms of Shiva, this temple shows stark examples of sculptors from all dynasties working together in the same place. eg. saptamatrika panel in a cave near the main temple shows few of the goddesses in pallava style, few others in rashtrakuta style and the remaining in chalukyan style. How do we figure that out? A rashtrakuta sculpture knows no proportion, heads are BIG and legs are SMALL. if the figure had to stand up, it would not be able to balance itself. A chalukyan sculpture always has a waist band ...

ATM (AKtun Tunichil Muknal) - Tukan
Actun Tunichil Muknal cave of the stone sepulcher was first discovered in 1989 located in the Tapir Mountain Reserve in the Cayo District near the village of Roaring Creek. This popular cave is rated as the #1 cave in Central America by National Geography and listed as the top things to do in Belize.. The ATM Cave is known to be used by the Mayans for ceremonial purposes during the classic period. Most of the ceremonies or rituals were held at the entrance of the cave. The interior of the cave was considered to be more sacred and closer to the Mayan rain God, Chaak. Towards the end of the classic period it is believed that the rituals were held deeper into the interior of the ATM as a result of drought thus contributing to the collapse of the Mayan civilization.. The natural geological wonder of crystalline stalactites and stalagmites formations are not the only remarkable thing about the ATM. Bhumibol Adulyadej - Wikipedia
After presiding over the long-delayed, ceremonial cremation of his brother Ananda Mahidol, Bhumibol was crowned King of Thailand on 5 May 1950 in the Baisal Daksin Throne Hall in the Grand Palace in Bangkok. It was the first coronation ceremony of a Thai sovereign to rule under the system of constitutional monarchy.[30] During the ceremony, he pledged that he would reign with righteousness for the benefit and happiness of the Siamese people (เราจะครองแผ่นดินโดยธรรม เพื่อประโยชน์สุขแห่งมหาชนชาวสยาม).[36] Notable elements associated with the coronation included the Bahadrabith Throne beneath the Great White Umbrella of State and royal regalia and utensils.[37]. In 1950 on Coronation Day, Bhumibols consort was made queen (Somdej Phra Boromarajini). The date of his coronation is celebrated each 5 May in Thailand as Coronation Day, a public holiday. On 9 June 2006, Bhumibol celebrated ...

The Milwaukee Area Technical College (MATC), U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services Office, and the U.S. District Court hosted a naturalization ceremony on March 8, welcoming 129 new American citizens.. The ceremony made me feel so excited, and I was in tears because I was so happy to finally be an American citizen, said Hala. I have been preparing to be an American citizen since I came to the United States from Egypt in 2009.. One of the first laws from the first Congress of the United States was the Naturalization Act of 1790, written a year after Constitution. Legend has it that the law was drafted by Thomas Jefferson, who helped write the Declaration of Independence. In that document, one of its complaints with Great Britain ...

These harmful traditional practices include female genital mutilation (FGM); forced feeding of women; early marriage; the various taboos or practices which prevent women from controlling their own fertility; nutritional taboos and traditional birth practices; son preference and its implications for the status of the girl ...
