Demand For Breakfast Cereals: Whole Grains Guidance And Food Choice
Downloadable! When using household-level data to examine consumer demand it is common to find that consumers purchase only a subset of the available goods, setting the demand for the remaining goods to zero. Ignoring such censoring of the dependent variables can lead to estimators with poor statistical properties and estimates that lead to poor policy decisions. In this paper we investigate household demand for four types of breakfast cereals, such as whole grain ready-to-eat, non-whole grain ready-to-eat, whole grain hot and non-whole grain hot cereals, using a censored Al- most Ideal Demand System (AIDS) and estimate the parameters of the model via Bayesian methods. Using household level scanner data (ACNielsen Homescan) we find that demand for all types of breakfast cereals is inelastic to changes in prices. The expenditure elasticity is slightly above unity for the whole grain ready-to-eat cereals suggesting that as the expenditure on cereals increases households will allocate proportionally more

Thermal Degradation Kinetics of Distillers Grains and Solubles in Nitr by Lijun Wang, Ajay Kumar et al.
The pyrolysis and oxidation kinetics of distillers grains and solubles were determined using thermogravimetric analysis. The starting temperature of pyrolysis and oxidation of distillers grains and solubles increased with the increase of heating rate and initial moisture content. The pyrolysis and oxidation of distillers grains and solubles were completed at 650°C and 850°C, respectively, which were independent of the heating rate and the initial moisture content. The residual weights of distillers grains and solubles after pyrolysis and oxidation were 27.15% and 5.49% of the original dry mass of distillers grains and solubles. Thermogravimetrical analysis data was used to determine kinetic parameters of the thermal degradation of distillers grains and solubles. Predicted dynamic residual weights of distillers grains and solubles during thermal degradation agreed well with experimental data. Keywords: biomass, distillers grains and solubles, kinetics, TGA, thermochemical

Whole-grain intake and total, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies
RESULTS:Thirteen studies on total mortality (104,061 deaths), 12 on CVD mortality (26,352 deaths), and 8 on cancer mortality (34,797 deaths) were included. Three studies reported whole-grain intake, and the remaining studies reported whole-grain product intake. In the dose-response analysis in which the intake of whole-grain products was converted to the amount of whole grain, the summary RRs for an increment in whole-grain intake of 50 g/d were 0.78 (95% CI: 0.67, 0.91) for total mortality, 0.70 (95% CI: 0.61, 0.79) for CVD mortality, and 0.82 (95% CI: 0.69, 0.96) for cancer mortality. A similar reduction was observed for the mortality from ischemic heart disease (RR: 0.68; 95% CI: 0.55, 0.84) but not from stroke (RR: 0.93; 95% CI: 0.54, 1.62). There was evidence of nonlinear associations of whole-grain intake with total (P-nonlinearity , 0.001) and CVD mortality (P-nonlinearity ,0.001), but not with cancer mortality (P-nonlinearity = 0.12), with the curves for the associations appearing ...
Heyday in Grain Land - IFT.org
Sales of whole-grain food products and dietary fiber have increased significantly since February 2006, when the Food and Drug Administration issued its definition of whole-grain foods and a draft guidance for industry on whole-grain label statements. Relative to 2005 data, sales of pasta increased by 26%, white bread products 55%, and fresh bagel goods 30%, according to the Whole Grains Council. In addition, total feed grain (corn, sorghum, barley, oats) use and domestic use experienced moderate increases between 2001 and 2006, while disappearance data indicate a 17% increase in food, alcohol, and industrial use of these grains.. The importance of whole grains in supporting improved health is emphasized in the governments 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and Healthy People 2010 reports and supported by public health experts in the United States and Europe and by emerging clinical data.. Epidemiological evidence suggests that healthy lifestyles include whole-grain foods. The inclusion of ...
Against breakfast cereal - Resilience
Since few things are more basic than food, it is heartening to see adjectives, like local, slow, organic and free-range creep into mainstream vocabulary. They dont always come with a full understanding of the issues behind them - I have yet to hear a celebrity chef discuss Ghawar or methane clathrates - but at least the media culture seems to be moving in the right direction. There is one meal, however, that rarely comes up, in which most people continue to eat highly processed and unsustainable food - breakfast.. Here in Ireland, we eat more breakfast cereal per person than any other people in the world, and 95 percent of us buy breakfast cereal each year. According to Kelloggs web site, the Irish eat more than eight kilos of breakfast cereal per year, two kilos more than in the UK or the USA, making the cereal aisle one of the most visited in the supermarket.. Cereal is the supermarkets third most popular product in dollars, just behind soda and milk and just above cigarettes. The few ...
The Nibble: What Is A Whole Grain Cereal
Whole Grain - CopperWiki
The 2005 U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommends that whole grains should account for at least half of a persons daily grain consumption. Studies show that our actual whole grain consumption is very low, with people on average consuming less than one serving of whole grains per day and only 9 percent of children are consuming the recommended three servings of whole grains every day. A look at most supermarket shelves shows that only about 10% of the grains in supermarkets are whole grains.. Just having half your meals in the form of any whole grain is not enough. Studies have shown that more than 70 percent of the grains we consume are wheat-based. Since wheat contains gluten, it can harm the intestine.. The awareness about whole grains is growing. The consumption of whole grain products in the US grew by 18% in 2005, as against 1% annual growth between 2001-2004. A 2007 Food and Health Survey by the International Food Information Council found that 71% of Americans are trying to increase their ...

Fusarium head blight (FHB), leaf rust, and stem rust are the most destructive fungal diseases in current world wheat production. The diploid wheatgrass, Thinopyrum elongatum (Host) Dewey (2n = 2x = 14, EE) is an excellent source of disease resistance genes. Two new Triticum-Secale-Thinopyrum trigeneric hybrids were derived from a cross between a hexaploid triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack, 2n = 6x = 42, AABBRR) and a hexaploid Triticum trititrigia (2n = 6x = 42, AABBEE), were produced and analyzed using genomic in situ hybridization and molecular markers. The results indicated that line RE21 contained 14 A-chromosomes, 14 B-chromosomes, three pairs of R-chromosomes (4R, 6R, and 7R), and four pairs of E-chromosomes (1E, 2E, 3E, and 5E) for a total chromosome number of 2n = 42. Line RE62 contained 14 A-chromosomes, 14 B-chromosomes, six pairs of R-chromosomes, and one pair of translocation chromosomes between chromosome 5R and 5E, for a total chromosome number of 2n = 42. At the seedling and adult

Will whole grains make you live longer? - Zoë Harcombe
Three! journal articles were published on whole grains in the past couple of weeks; not sure how that happened. Chen et al had this one published in the AJCN Whole-grain intake and total, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality: a systematic review and meta-analysis of prospective studies.. The US Circulation/Harvard team study was the one that dominated the media headlines, not only in the US, but also in the UK, where we were misinformed: Three slices of wholemeal bread a day slash risk of dying from heart disease by 25%.. The 10 least nutritious breakfast cereals
By Nicole Baute The cereal your kid wants for breakfast might be as unhealthy as a chocolate doughnut. A doughnut probably has a little less fibre but its not much less healthy than the sugared cereals, said Jennifer Harris, the lead author of a new Yale University report aimed at the big players in the cereal industry. Research from Yales Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity, presented at a conference Monday, confirms what most parents already know: the least healthy cereals for kids are the ones being marketed to them most aggressively. It might taste good and come with a toy, but cereals like Reeses Puffs, Corn Pops and Lucky Charms are chock-full of sugar and sodium, and low in fibre. Compared to cereals marketed to adults, the cereal aimed at kids has 85 per cent more sugar, 65 per cent less fibre and 60 per cent more sodium, according to the report.. And cereal companies are spending huge sums to draw in their target demographic. In the U.S., cereal companies spend $156 million ...
Whole grain-rich diet reduces body weight and systemic low-grade inflammation without inducing major changes of the gut...
By a randomised, controlled cross-over trial comprising two 8-week dietary intervention periods in subjects exhibiting an increased metabolic risk profile, we demonstrated that a whole grain diet, as compared with a refined grain diet, reduced body weight and markers of low-grade systemic inflammation without significantly changing the faecal microbial composition, diversity or functional potential. Importantly, the observed effect of whole grain on inflammation markers was still evident after adjustment for weight loss. The effects on inflammation and body weight were the net result of the refined grain diet increasing weight and inflammatory markers and the whole grain diet reducing these parameters. However, we found no changes in glucose and lipid metabolism, markers for liver fibrosis, metabolic satiety-regulating hormones or BP after 8 weeks of enhanced whole grain intake as compared with refined grain intake.. Our results add to a growing body of literature demonstrating the ability of ...
Nutrients | Free Full-Text | The Contribution of Fortified Ready-to-Eat Cereal to Vitamin and Mineral Intake in the U.S....
Micronutrients play a pivotal role in achieving and maintaining optimum health across all life stages. Much of the U.S. population fails to meet Estimated Average Requirements (EARs) for key nutrients. This analysis aims to assess the contribution of fortified ready-to-eat cereals (RTEC) to micronutrient intake for U.S. residents aged 2-18, 19-99, and 2-99 years of age according to National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2010 data. We used the National Cancer Institute (NCI) method to assess usual intake of 21 micronutrients and the percentage of the population under EARs and above Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (UL). Without fortification of RTECs, the percentage of those aged 2-18 years that were below EARs increased by 155, 163, 113, and 35% for niacin, iron, thiamin, and vitamin A, respectively. For vitamins B6 and zinc, the respective numbers were 118% and 60%. Adults aged 19-99 and 2-99 had lower percentages but similar outcomes. RTECs are associated with improved nutrient
Best cereal choices for the kidney diet - Kidney Diet Tips
Today I received a question about the best cereals for a person in stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD) to eat. Instead of sending my answer to only one person I thought I would share it with all of you as well.. Some good hot cereal choices include cream of wheat, Malt-o-Meal, grits, and even oatmeal a few times a week. (Stick with the cook and serve cereals instead of the higher sodium instant ones.) Many diet guides place oatmeal in the limit or avoid list because it does contain more phosphorus than the other hot cereals listed.. For ready-to-eat cereals look on the Nutrition Facts label and select the brands lowest in sodium and phosphorus. Lower sodium choices help with blood pressure control. Many cereals give the % Daily Value for phosphorus rather than milligrams. Try to go with those containing 10% DV or less. In general, cereals with added nuts or whole grain tend to have higher amounts of phosphorus.. Our thinking on limiting whole grains is going through a shift currently. You see, ...

Nutrients | Free Full-Text | The Relationship between Whole Grain Intake and Body Weight: Results of Meta-Analyses of...
Results from some observational studies suggest that higher whole grain (WG) intake is associated with lower risk of weight gain. Ovid Medline was used to conduct a literature search for observational studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing WG food intake and weight status in adults. A meta-regression analysis of cross-sectional data from 12 observational studies (136,834 subjects) and a meta-analysis of nine RCTs (973 subjects) was conducted; six prospective cohort publications were qualitatively reviewed. Cross-sectional data meta-regression results indicate a significant, inverse correlation between WG intake and body mass index (BMI): weighted slope, −0.0141 kg/m2 per g/day of WG intake (95% confidence interval (CI): −0.0207, −0.0077; r = −0.526, p = 0.0001). Prospective cohort results generally showed inverse associations between WG intake and weight change with typical follow-up periods of five to 20 years. RCT meta-analysis results show a nonsignificant

Cereal: an endangered breakfast option? | BasehorInfo.com
I am well aware that the world is changing rapidly, and there isnt much that shocks or surprises me anymore. Yet, I must confess that it came as a real jolt when I read that cold breakfast cereal sales were falling rapidly and some cereal companies were contemplating dropping long-time, familiar brands. One expert predicted that in a couple of decades, cold breakfast cereals would join typewriters, buggy whips and running boards as relics from a bygone era.. It seems that the sale of cold breakfast cereals has been dropping 2 to 3 percent annually. While there are several billion boxes sold annually, many younger people regard cold breakfast cereal as something from grandmother and grandfathers generation. Of course, the popularity of breakfast as a meal is tanking. One study reported that about half of Americans do not eat breakfast, which many regard as the most important meal of the day. Another study showed that Americans spent only an average of 13 minutes a day preparing ...
Gluten-Free Breakfast Cereal Bowl - Simply Quinoa
Breakfast is my favorite meal, and for as long as I can remember, cereal has been my breakfast of choice. The cold milk mixed with sweet, crunchy cereal and topped with fresh fruit, is pure bliss.. I love cereal so much that upon my return to the United States after living in Spain for 6 months, my first meal was cereal. A huge bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats (always with Almonds) with granola (sadly not homemade) on top. Yep, totally packed with gluten and I totally enjoyed every single bite of it.. Anyway, when I took gluten and dairy out of my diet, cereal pretty much fell by the wayside. Much to my dismay (at the time at least), my daily bowl of cereal was replaced with green smoothies, quinoa muffins, gluten-free scones, and puffed rice cakes with almond butter and apples.. Of course, now I couldnt be happier with my lifestyle and breakfast options. But that doesnt mean I havent been missing cereal. At least until this recipe came along. I was inspired. I could now combine my healthy, ...

Metabolic Syndrome and Larger Waists in Youth Point to Health Risks on Horizon. (continued) - California Ripe Olives -...
Scientific literature is emphasizing that what is important for preventing and managing metabolic syndrome is not just the total amount of carbohydrate but the type of carbohydrate we eat. For consumers who have relied on white bread and potatoes to meet their Food Guide Pyramids recommendation of 6-11 servings of bread, cereal, rice, and pasta per day, this may be a challenging issue. Researchers from Tufts University found that individuals who eat three or more servings of whole grains a day, especially high fiber ones, had better insulin sensitivity and were less likely to have metabolic syndrome.. Whole grain intake has been shown to be inversely related to body mass index (BMI) and waist to hip ratio for adults and adolescents. In an investigation based on participants from the Framingham Offspring Study which computed an average whole grain consumption of 8 servings per week to 20 servings per week of refined grain found astonishing results. As more whole grains were consumed, insulin ...

Count Chocula Cereal Milk Ice Cream - Baking Bites
Cereal milk ice cream is exactly what it sounds like: ice cream that tastes like the milk that is left behind after eating a bowl full of cereal, preferably a sugary cereal. The idea was popularized at Momofuku Milk Bar, where it is made with caramelized corn flakes in milk. I dont know about you, but as a kid I always thought that chocolate cereals left the best tasting cereal milk behind - not cornflakes and other plain cereals that you needed to add your own sugar to. I dont buy chocolate cereals much these days, but I can never resist picking up a box of Count Chocola when it appears on store shelves around Halloween. It was one of my favorites as a kid and a fun, seasonal indulgence for grown ups who might usually steer towards less chocolaty breakfast cereals. Since that chocolaty milk has a lot more flavor than plain cereal milk, I decided it was a great candidate to be turned int a batch of cereal milk ice cream.. My Count Chocula Cereal Milk Ice Cream is easy to make and has a light ...
12 Grain Cereal with Poolish | The Fresh Loaf
Back home now, with all my baking equipment, so I thought Id re-create the no-measure bread I made on holiday last week, only measuring stuff this time so I could bake it again, and scale it for different sized batches. The original adventure is recorded in my blog post here. This time, just for something a bit different, I made the poolish with white whole wheat flour. Its 100% hydration, 100 grams each of flour and water and about 1/4 tsp of active dry yeast.Next, the soaker - 50 grams of bulk 12 grain cereal (a blend of mostly cracked grains and seeds, with a few flakes) and 100 grams of boiling water. Both the poolish and the soaker were made in the morning and left to sit for most of the day.Later afternoon / early evening, I mixed the poolish and soaker with 450 grams of bread flour, 250 grams of water, 1/2 tsp dry yeast and 11 grams of salt. The dough itself (just counting the dough water and flour) was 56% hydration, but if you count the 12 grain cereal as flour and calculate hydration with all

Milo, Grain Sorghum | Grain Crops
Milo or grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) is adapted for Kentucky but is not widely grown. Grain sorghum is an option for fields that tend to dry slowly in the spring and require later planting dates that are more suited to sorghum than to corn. Grain sorghum is more drought tolerant than either corn or soybean, making it a viable option for fields that are prone to drought. Grain sorghum uses less nitrogen than corn and will produce similar yields to corn on marginal soils. Some people are interested in sweet sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) which is the same species as grain sorghum, but a different growth type. Our findings suggest that higher intakes of whole-grain foods, dietary fiber, cereal, and fruit fiber and diets with a lower glycemic index and glycemic load are associated with lower insulin resistance as determined using the HOMA method. Insulin resistance is a common feature of and a possible contributing factor to the metabolic syndrome. However, after considering several aspects of carbohydrate nutrition, only whole-grain, cereal fiber, and glycemic index intakes were associated with the prevalence of the metabolic syndrome. The prevalence of the metabolic syndrome was 38 and 33% less in the highest relative to the lowest categories of cereal fiber and whole-grain intake, respectively. A high dietary glycemic index was positively associated with the metabolic syndrome; participants with the highest glycemic index intakes were ∼40% more likely to have the metabolic syndrome than were participants with the lowest dietary glycemic index. To our knowledge, this is the first observational ...

Arsenic in baby rice cereal higher than FDA recommendation, advocacy group finds - Ebony News Today
Levels of arsenic in baby rice cereal are much higher than other infant cereals, according to a recent study.. And, some are higher than FDA recommendations.. Healthy Babies Bright Futures, an advocacy group working to reduce toxins in a babys environment, tested 105 cereals nationwide for arsenic contamination. The group found arsenic levels in infant rice cereal averaged six times higher than in oatmeal, multi-grain, quinoa and other non-rice infant cereals, in a non-peer reviewed study published online this week.. The group is calling on the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to more strictly regulate arsenic levels in baby food. The toxin is associated with developmental defects, cardiovascular disease, neurotoxicity, diabetes and even cancer, according to the World Health Organization.. In 2016, the FDA proposed a recommendation of no more than 100 parts per billion of arsenic in infant cereal. That recommendation isnt requirement. (To put that in perspective, the Environmental Protection ...

Quantification of sugars in breakfast cereals using capillary electrophoresis. - Semantic Scholar
About 80% of the Australian population consumes breakfast cereal (BC) at least five days a week. With high prevalence rates of obesity and other diet-related diseases, improved methods for monitoring sugar levels in breakfast cereals would be useful in nutrition research. The heterogeneity of the complex matrix of BCs can make carbohydrate analysis challenging or necessitate tedious sample preparation leading to potential sugar loss or starch degradation into sugars. A recently established, simple and robust free solution capillary electrophoresis (CE) method was used in a new application to 13 BCs (in Australia) and compared with several established methods for quantification of carbohydrates. Carbohydrates identified in BCs by CE included sucrose, maltose, glucose and fructose. The CE method is simple requiring no sample preparation or derivatization and carbohydrates are detected by direct UV detection. CE was shown to be a more robust and accurate method for measuring carbohydrates than Fehling

Few prospective studies have investigated the association between whole-grain consumption and incidence of oesophageal cancer. In the Scandinavian countries, consumption of whole grains is high and the incidence of oesophageal cancer comparably low. The aim of this paper was to study the associations between consumption of whole grains, whole-grain products and oesophageal cancer, including its two major histological subtypes. The HELGA cohort is a prospective cohort study consisting of three sub-cohorts in Norway, Sweden and Denmark. Information regarding whole-grain consumption was collected through country-specific food frequency questionnaires. Cancer cases were identified through national cancer registries. Cox proportional hazards ratios were calculated in order to assess the associations between whole grains and oesophageal cancer risk. The analytical cohort had 113,993 members, including 112 cases, and median follow-up time was 11 years. When comparing the highest tertile of intake with ...

Highly efficient production of Aspergillus niger amylase cocktail by solid-state fermentation using triticale grains as a well...
Triticale (x Triticosecale, Wittmack), an important industrial crop, with high grain yield, containing high amounts of starch, proteins and also major and minor mineral elements, is not yet sufficiently utilized. The simultaneous production of alpha-amylase and glucoamylase isoforms by Aspergillus niger on triticale grains, without any nutritive supplements, was developed, optimized and scaled up 10 fold for the first time. The specific combination of the examined effects led to the production of a novel glucoamylase isoform. Reduction of particle size, increase in oxygen availability and substrate height lead to an increase of 30 % in the production of amylases. Reduction of the relative humidity from 65 to 30 % increased glucoamylase production 2 fold and alpha-amylase production by 30%. The peak production of alpha-amylase (158 U g(-1)) and glucoamylase (170 U g(-1)) were obtained in Erlenmeyer flasks and in scaled-up trays. The obtained A. niger amylase cocktail was more efficient ...in raw ...

A Canadian ethanol feedstock study to benchmark the relative performance of triticale: I. Agronomics - Agriculture and Agri...
A need has been identified for alternative crop(s) with high grain yield, low grain protein concentration, and high starch for the ethanol industry. The objective of this study was to benchmark the relative performance of triticale (×Triticosecale ssp.) to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) classes currently utilized for ethanol production. Sixteen cultivars-three triticale, four Canada prairie spring (CPS) wheat, three Canada western soft white spring wheat (CWSWS), two Canada western red spring (CWRS) wheat, and four Canada western general purpose (CWGP) candidate cultivars-were grown at 36 locations across western Canada from 2006 to 2009. The performance of these cereal classes can generally be summarized as triticale = Hoffman (CWGP) = CWSWS , CPS white , CPS red , CWRS for most variables. The triticale and white wheats produced 12 and 13% more grain, respectively, than the hard red spring wheats. Among the triticales, AC Ultimas and Pronghorns yield potential were most notable because they ...

A Canadian Ethanol Feedstock Study to Benchmark the Relative Performance of Triticale: II. Grain Quality and Ethanol Production...
Cereal grain ethanol production may need to supplement biomass ethanol production to meet the increasing long-term demand for ethanol. A study was initiated to benchmark the relative performance of triticale (´Triticosecale ssp.) to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) classes utilized for ethanol production. Ten cultivars: three triticale, two Canada prairie spring (CPS) wheat, three Canada western soft white spring (CWSWS) wheat, one Canada western red spring (CWRS) wheat, and one Canada western general purpose wheat cultivars were grown at 45 locations across Canada from 2006 to 2009. The locations were subgrouped by agroecological zone for western Canada, by province for Ontario and Quebec, and Charlottetown, PEI, for the Maritimes. The greatest grain yield was usually observed for Hoffman (red spring wheat) followed by triticale cultivars and CWSWS cultivars. Ethanol yield varied by region as a reflection of grain yield, and differences among cultivars generally were: triticale (excluding Tyndal) ...

SaskWheat members pass resolution to join Cereals Canada, again - RealAgriculture
Saskatchewan Wheat Development Commission members passed a resolution at the groups annual general meeting at CropSphere in Saskatoon on Tuesday directing their board of directors to join Cereals Canada.. While other provincial wheat grower organizations are members in Cereals Canada, Canadas largest wheat-producing province is notably absent from the national cereal crop value chain association.. The motion, introduced by Scott Sefton of Broadview, Saskatchewan, resolves that Sask. Wheat joins Cereals Canada so that Saskatchewan producers take their place on representing Saskatchewan-produced wheat and durum on national and international trade missions.. The vote was close enough to require a count.. Its the second time in the last three years that SaskWheat members have passed a non-binding resolution to join Cereals Canada. The board decided against it after a similar motion was passed at the 2016 AGM.. The Cereals Canada issue was raised during SaskWheats recent director election, ...
Nancys Free Selections: Reviews: Kelloggs Crunchy Nut Cereal
As a BzzAgent I was invited to the Kelloggs Crunchy Nut Cereal BzzCampaign. Being a person who is not a big fan of eating breakfast I thought Id give this a try to see if this cereal would satisfy me and also to encourage me to eat breakfast more often. Once the full size box of Kelloggs Crunchy Nut Cereal in Golden Honey Nut arrived it didnt last very long. My husband tried it out first and really liked it. In fact, I had to buy a second box in order for me to really get a taste of it. When you first open the box you will notice the delicious aroma the cereal gives off. It smells of sweet honey and peanuts. After having a nice sized bowl of it I had to agree with my husband that the cereal was really good. It had a nice crunch to it and the taste of honey and peanuts was just the right mix. This is one yummy cereal ...
Timing of Initial Exposure to Cereal Grains and the Risk of Wheat Allergy | American Academy of Pediatrics
This study found an association between age at initial exposure to cereal grains and the development of wheat allergy. Our data demonstrate that delaying the introduction of cereal grains until after 6 months does not protect against the development of wheat allergy but may increase the childs risk of wheat allergy, even after controlling for a family history of allergy, breastfeeding duration, prior food allergy, and introduction of rice cereal. In addition, having at least 1 first-degree relative with a history of asthma, eczema, or hives was shown to be independently associated with an increased risk of wheat-allergy development.. The reasons to delay introduction of solid foods for allergy prevention have centered on the notion that the infants gut-mucosal barrier is immature and early exposure to allergens (food proteins) may result in allergic sensitization against food and subsequently to inhalant allergens.19, 20 Evidence in humans to support this hypothesis comes from a few studies ...
breakfast cereal upsets my stomach - lactose diet health | Ask MetaFilter
I am lactose-intolerant. A breakfast cereal I was eating was consistently giving me symptoms similar to lactose intolerance, but none of the ingredients are apparent sources of lactose. I emailed the manufacturer and they claimed that this was a lactose-free product. Additionally, all of the ingredients are things that I consume in other products, without recognizable problems. One remote possibility is that lactose could be present on the cereals manufacturing equipment. But I am skeptical that Im that sensitive to trace amounts of lactose ...
Agriculture Society » Deceptions in the Food Industry: Whole Grains
Over time - and especially since the revision of Dietary Guidelines in 2005 - the trend toward recommending the consumption of whole grains in our diets by the USDA and most health and medical sources has increased. As a result, we are seeing disease rates increasing dramatically - obesity, heart disease, cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke.. The trend toward adding more whole grains to food has been growing steadily since the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Department of Health and Human Services revised the dietary guidelines in 2005, recommending that at least half of all grains eaten be whole grains and that 3 or more ounces of whole grains be consumed per day. As a 1-ounce equivalent of whole grains has about 16 grams of whole grains, the recommendation is to eat 48 grams of whole grains a day.. Those guidelines were based on information in large studies published in peer-reviewed journals such as the New England Journal of Medicine, Obesity and the Archives of Internal ...

Citation: Min, B., McClung, A.M., Chen, M. 2014. Effects of hydrothermal processes on antioxidants in brown, purple and red bran whole grain rice (Oryza sativa L.). Food Chemistry. 159:106-115. Interpretive Summary: The consumption of whole grain cereals is strongly recommended in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans because of their protective effects against many chronic diseases such as cancer and cardiovascular diseases. Antioxidants in whole grain cereals are considered major contributors to this health-beneficial potential. Whole grain rice contains significant amounts of antioxidant compounds including vitamin E (tocopherols and tocotrienols), -oryzanols and phenolics (especially proanthocyanidins and anthocyanins in red and purple bran rice, respectively). However, the concentrations of these natural antioxidants and, thus, their health-promoting potential, are dependent upon processing and cooking methods used with prior to consumption. Therefore, evaluation of changes in ...
