Downloadable! When using household-level data to examine consumer demand it is common to find that consumers purchase only a subset of the available goods, setting the demand for the remaining goods to zero. Ignoring such censoring of the dependent variables can lead to estimators with poor statistical properties and estimates that lead to poor policy decisions. In this paper we investigate household demand for four types of breakfast cereals, such as whole grain ready-to-eat, non-whole grain ready-to-eat, whole grain hot and non-whole grain hot cereals, using a censored Al- most Ideal Demand System (AIDS) and estimate the parameters of the model via Bayesian methods. Using household level scanner data (ACNielsen Homescan) we find that demand for all types of breakfast cereals is inelastic to changes in prices. The expenditure elasticity is slightly above unity for the whole grain ready-to-eat cereals suggesting that as the expenditure on cereals increases households will allocate proportionally more

The pyrolysis and oxidation kinetics of distillers grains and solubles were determined using thermogravimetric analysis. The starting temperature of pyrolysis and oxidation of distillers grains and solubles increased with the increase of heating rate and initial moisture content. The pyrolysis and oxidation of distillers grains and solubles were completed at 650°C and 850°C, respectively, which were independent of the heating rate and the initial moisture content. The residual weights of distillers grains and solubles after pyrolysis and oxidation were 27.15% and 5.49% of the original dry mass of distillers grains and solubles. Thermogravimetrical analysis data was used to determine kinetic parameters of the thermal degradation of distillers grains and solubles. Predicted dynamic residual weights of distillers grains and solubles during thermal degradation agreed well with experimental data. Keywords: biomass, distillers grains and solubles, kinetics, TGA, thermochemical

Sales of whole-grain food products and dietary fiber have increased significantly since February 2006, when the Food and Drug Administration issued its definition of "whole-grain foods" and a draft guidance for industry on whole-grain label statements. Relative to 2005 data, sales of pasta increased by 26%, white bread products 55%, and fresh bagel goods 30%, according to the Whole Grains Council. In addition, total feed grain (corn, sorghum, barley, oats) use and domestic use experienced moderate increases between 2001 and 2006, while disappearance data indicate a 17% increase in food, alcohol, and industrial use of these grains.. The importance of whole grains in supporting improved health is emphasized in the governments 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and Healthy People 2010 reports and supported by public health experts in the United States and Europe and by emerging clinical data.. Epidemiological evidence suggests that healthy lifestyles include whole-grain foods. The inclusion of ...
Since few things are more basic than food, it is heartening to see adjectives, like local, slow, organic and free-range creep into mainstream vocabulary. They dont always come with a full understanding of the issues behind them - I have yet to hear a celebrity chef discuss Ghawar or methane clathrates - but at least the media culture seems to be moving in the right direction. There is one meal, however, that rarely comes up, in which most people continue to eat highly processed and unsustainable food - breakfast.. Here in Ireland, we eat more breakfast cereal per person than any other people in the world, and 95 percent of us buy breakfast cereal each year. According to Kelloggs web site, the Irish eat more than eight kilos of breakfast cereal per year, two kilos more than in the UK or the USA, making the cereal aisle one of the most visited in the supermarket.. Cereal is the supermarkets third most popular product in dollars, just behind soda and milk and just above cigarettes. The few ...

The 2005 U.S. Dietary Guidelines recommends that whole grains should account for at least half of a persons daily grain consumption. Studies show that our actual whole grain consumption is very low, with people on average consuming less than one serving of whole grains per day and only 9 percent of children are consuming the recommended three servings of whole grains every day. A look at most supermarket shelves shows that only about 10% of the grains in supermarkets are whole grains.. Just having half your meals in the form of any whole grain is not enough. Studies have shown that more than 70 percent of the grains we consume are wheat-based. Since wheat contains gluten, it can harm the intestine.. The awareness about whole grains is growing. The consumption of whole grain products in the US grew by 18% in 2005, as against 1% annual growth between 2001-2004. A 2007 Food and Health Survey by the International Food Information Council found that 71% of Americans are trying to increase their ...
Fusarium head blight (FHB), leaf rust, and stem rust are the most destructive fungal diseases in current world wheat production. The diploid wheatgrass, Thinopyrum elongatum (Host) Dewey (2n = 2x = 14, EE) is an excellent source of disease resistance genes. Two new Triticum-Secale-Thinopyrum trigeneric hybrids were derived from a cross between a hexaploid triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack, 2n = 6x = 42, AABBRR) and a hexaploid Triticum trititrigia (2n = 6x = 42, AABBEE) , were produced and analyzed using genomic in situ hybridization and molecular markers. The results indicated that line RE21 contained 14 A-chromosomes, 14 B-chromosomes, 3 pairs of R-chromosomes (4R, 6R and 7R), and 4 pairs of E-chromosomes (1E, 2E, 3E and 5E) for a total chromosome number of 2n = 42. Line RE62 contained 14 A-chromosomes, 14 B-chromosomes, 6 pairs of R-chromosomes, and 1 pair of translocation chromosomes between chromosome 5R and 5E, for a total chromosome number of 2n = 42. By Nicole Baute The cereal your kid wants for breakfast might be as unhealthy as a chocolate doughnut. "A doughnut probably has a little less fibre but its not much less healthy than the sugared cereals," said Jennifer Harris, the lead author of a new Yale University report aimed at the big players in the cereal industry. Research from Yales Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity, presented at a conference Monday, confirms what most parents already know: the least healthy cereals for kids are the ones being marketed to them most aggressively. It might taste good and come with a toy, but cereals like Reeses Puffs, Corn Pops and Lucky Charms are chock-full of sugar and sodium, and low in fibre. Compared to cereals marketed to adults, the cereal aimed at kids has 85 per cent more sugar, 65 per cent less fibre and 60 per cent more sodium, according to the report.. And cereal companies are spending huge sums to draw in their target demographic. In the U.S., cereal companies spend $156 million ...

By a randomised, controlled cross-over trial comprising two 8-week dietary intervention periods in subjects exhibiting an increased metabolic risk profile, we demonstrated that a whole grain diet, as compared with a refined grain diet, reduced body weight and markers of low-grade systemic inflammation without significantly changing the faecal microbial composition, diversity or functional potential. Importantly, the observed effect of whole grain on inflammation markers was still evident after adjustment for weight loss. The effects on inflammation and body weight were the net result of the refined grain diet increasing weight and inflammatory markers and the whole grain diet reducing these parameters. However, we found no changes in glucose and lipid metabolism, markers for liver fibrosis, metabolic satiety-regulating hormones or BP after 8 weeks of enhanced whole grain intake as compared with refined grain intake.. Our results add to a growing body of literature demonstrating the ability of ...
Micronutrients play a pivotal role in achieving and maintaining optimum health across all life stages. Much of the U.S. population fails to meet Estimated Average Requirements (EARs) for key nutrients. This analysis aims to assess the contribution of fortified ready-to-eat cereals (RTEC) to micronutrient intake for U.S. residents aged 2-18, 19-99, and 2-99 years of age according to National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007-2010 data. We used the National Cancer Institute (NCI) method to assess usual intake of 21 micronutrients and the percentage of the population under EARs and above Tolerable Upper Intake Levels (UL). Without fortification of RTECs, the percentage of those aged 2-18 years that were below EARs increased by 155, 163, 113, and 35% for niacin, iron, thiamin, and vitamin A, respectively. For vitamins B6 and zinc, the respective numbers were 118% and 60%. Adults aged 19-99 and 2-99 had lower percentages but similar outcomes. RTECs are associated with improved nutrient
Today I received a question about the best cereals for a person in stage 3 chronic kidney disease (CKD) to eat. Instead of sending my answer to only one person I thought I would share it with all of you as well.. Some good hot cereal choices include cream of wheat, Malt-o-Meal, grits, and even oatmeal a few times a week. (Stick with the cook and serve cereals instead of the higher sodium instant ones.) Many diet guides place oatmeal in the limit or avoid list because it does contain more phosphorus than the other hot cereals listed.. For ready-to-eat cereals look on the Nutrition Facts label and select the brands lowest in sodium and phosphorus. Lower sodium choices help with blood pressure control. Many cereals give the % Daily Value for phosphorus rather than milligrams. Try to go with those containing 10% DV or less. In general, cereals with added nuts or whole grain tend to have higher amounts of phosphorus.. Our thinking on limiting whole grains is going through a shift currently. You see, ...

Results from some observational studies suggest that higher whole grain (WG) intake is associated with lower risk of weight gain. Ovid Medline was used to conduct a literature search for observational studies and randomized controlled trials (RCTs) assessing WG food intake and weight status in adults. A meta-regression analysis of cross-sectional data from 12 observational studies (136,834 subjects) and a meta-analysis of nine RCTs (973 subjects) was conducted; six prospective cohort publications were qualitatively reviewed. Cross-sectional data meta-regression results indicate a significant, inverse correlation between WG intake and body mass index (BMI): weighted slope, −0.0141 kg/m2 per g/day of WG intake (95% confidence interval (CI): −0.0207, −0.0077; r = −0.526, p = 0.0001). Prospective cohort results generally showed inverse associations between WG intake and weight change with typical follow-up periods of five to 20 years. RCT meta-analysis results show a nonsignificant
I am well aware that the world is changing rapidly, and there isnt much that shocks or surprises me anymore. Yet, I must confess that it came as a real jolt when I read that cold breakfast cereal sales were falling rapidly and some cereal companies were contemplating dropping long-time, familiar brands. One "expert" predicted that in a couple of decades, cold breakfast cereals would join typewriters, buggy whips and running boards as relics from a bygone era.. It seems that the sale of cold breakfast cereals has been dropping 2 to 3 percent annually. While there are several billion boxes sold annually, many younger people regard cold breakfast cereal as something from "grandmother and grandfathers generation." Of course, the popularity of breakfast as a meal is tanking. One study reported that about half of Americans do not eat breakfast, which many regard as the most important meal of the day. Another study showed that Americans spent only an average of 13 minutes a day preparing ...
Breakfast is my favorite meal, and for as long as I can remember, cereal has been my breakfast of choice. The cold milk mixed with sweet, crunchy cereal and topped with fresh fruit, is pure bliss.. I love cereal so much that upon my return to the United States after living in Spain for 6 months, my first meal was cereal. A huge bowl of Honey Bunches of Oats (always with Almonds) with granola (sadly not homemade) on top. Yep, totally packed with gluten and I totally enjoyed every single bite of it.. Anyway, when I took gluten and dairy out of my diet, cereal pretty much fell by the wayside. Much to my dismay (at the time at least), my daily bowl of cereal was replaced with green smoothies, quinoa muffins, gluten-free scones, and puffed rice cakes with almond butter and apples.. Of course, now I couldnt be happier with my lifestyle and breakfast options. But that doesnt mean I havent been missing cereal. At least until this recipe came along. I was inspired. I could now combine my healthy, ...

Following a two-year trial phase, the first branch of a new restaurant chain has been opened up in Chicago. The food on the menu: breakfast cereals. According to a report on the news portal, heute.de, this new restaurant idea came about because so many people in the USA both know and love eating cereals. The breakfast cereals were first sold using mobile sales points for example at sport stadiums, zoos or shopping centres. A catering service was also launched. In the future, the founder of this new business idea is intending to expand the business through franchising - first in the USA, then in Canada and Great Britain. The long-term aim is to then move into other European and Asian countries ...
The few studies that meet the FDA whole grains definition provide insufficient scientific evidence to support a CVD health claim. A whole grains and CVD health claim is supported when a larger number of studies that use a broader concept of whole grain that includes isolated bran, germ or fiber in their analysis of whole grains are also considered. The scientific evidence on risk reduction of diabetes and whole grain consumption is suggestive, but not conclusive, whether or not the study meets the FDA definition of whole grains. This type of analysis is complicated by the diversity in nutrients and bioactive components of different types of whole grains. For nearly half a century, the Life Sciences Research Office (LSRO) has provided expert, objective scientific opinions and evaluations to governmental agencies and leading corporations in the food, health and bioscience sectors. A non-profit organization originally established in 1962, LSRO provides independent science-based analysis and advice ...
We included nine RCTs randomising a total of 1414 participants (age range 24 to 70; mean age 45 to 59, where reported) to whole grain versus lower whole grain or refined grain control groups. We found no studies that reported the effect of whole grain diets on total cardiovascular mortality or cardiovascular events (total myocardial infarction, unstable angina, coronary artery bypass graft surgery, percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty, total stroke). All included studies reported the effect of whole grain diets on risk factors for cardiovascular disease including blood lipids and blood pressure. All studies were in primary prevention populations and had an unclear or high risk of bias, and no studies had an intervention duration greater than 16 weeks. ...

The germ of a cereal is the reproductive part that germinates to grow into a plant; it is the embryo of the seed. Along with bran, germ is often a by-product of the milling that produces refined grain products. Cereal grains and their components, such as wheat germ oil, rice bran oil, and maize, may be used as a source from which vegetable oil is extracted, or used directly as a food ingredient. The germ is retained as an integral part of whole-grain foods. Non-whole grain methods of milling are intended to isolate the endosperm, which is ground into flour, with removal of both the husk (bran) and the germ. Removal of bran is aimed at producing a flour with a white rather than a brown color, and eliminating fiber, which reduces nutrition. The germ is rich in polyunsaturated fats (which have a tendency to oxidize and become rancid on storage) and so germ removal improves the storage qualities of flour. Wheat germ or wheatgerm is a concentrated source of several essential nutrients, including ...

I have admitted before that I am not a morning person. You will not find me fixing a fresh hot breakfast for my kids in the morning. That may be slightly due to the fact that it took 5 1/2 years for my youngest to finally go to bed at a decent hour and sleep through the night. So when my kids get up in the morning I rely heavily on ready-to-eat cereal for breakfast. I was so excited when I found out they were starting to add whole grains to ready to eat cereal. Now I just found out that General Mills announced a commitment to further reduce sugar in cereals advertised to kids under 12 to single digit grams of sugar per serving. The company has already been reducing sugar in cereals while increasing key nutrients, such as calcium and vitamin D, and providing whole grain. I also just discovered that ready-to-eat cereal eaters consume less fat, less cholesterol and more fiber than non-cereal eaters? Cereals also deliver important vitamins, minerals and other essential nutrients, making cereal a top source

People who tuck into fortified breakfast cereals may actually be causing themselves more harm than good, according to a study by government researchers published in the June edition of the Journal of the American College of Nutrition 2001 (pp. 247-254). Many of the enriched products actually contain more of the nutrients than it states on the labels and studies have shown that getting too much of nutrients such as iron and folate can be harmful. The problem is exacerbated by the fact that most consumers eat more than the recommended portion size.

In a process for producing a foodstuff, more particularly a fodder from cereal, it is disclosed to saccharify the starch contained in the cereal to form dextrose by enzymatic degradation of the starch in the cereal grain. All the cereal substances, both those containing starch and those not containing starch, are treated together in the process of enzymatic degradation of the starch in the cereal grain until the starch has been converted to dextrose in the cereal grain. The product is then dried.

Plant genetic resources (PGR) have been used in breeding programs for many decades to produce modern varieties by introducing genes of interest, in particular, resistance genes. Nevertheless, these resources remain underestimated if we focus on abiotic stress tolerance or new agricultural techniques, which consider productivity with regard to the environment. In recent years, new users, such as scientists and farmers, have discovered diverse sources of interest for screening and exploiting natural diversity conserved in PGR collections. In the case of the French cereals PGR Network, a share of the responsibility, based on the knowledge and ability of network members, has been decided in order to better promote the use of PGR. The main species of Triticum (wheat), Hordeum (barley), Secale (rye), × Triticosecale (triticale), Avena (oat) genera and their wild relatives are held in the collection. By combining phenotypic and genotypic data, the whole genetic resource collection has been structured into

The new Star Trek Cereal boldly goes where other cereals that promoted movies with the word "star" in them have gone before. Its made up of sweetened oat cereal and marshmallows, which were the same ingredients found in 2005s Star Wars Cereal. These similarities might lead to a confrontation between Star Wars and Star Trek fanatics about which cereal is better, which would be much like the disagreements those nerds have over which movie franchise is superior. Oh, I cant wait for the Force-Fx lightsaber replicas and the plastic phasers set to kill to be drawn at each other. All I would need are some Princess Leias in gold bikinis and a few Lt. Ferdinand Schumacher, a German immigrant, began the cereals revolution in 1854 with a hand oats grinder in the back room of a small store in Akron, Ohio. His German Mills American Oatmeal Company was the nations first commercial oatmeal manufacturer. He marketed the product locally as a substitute for breakfast pork. Improved production technology (steel cutters, porcelain rollers, improved hullers), combined with an influx of German and Irish immigrants, quickly boosted sales and profits. In 1877, Schumacher adopted the Quaker symbol, the first registered trademark for a breakfast cereal. The acceptance of "horse food" for human consumption encouraged other entrepreneurs to enter the industry. Henry Parsons Crowell started operations in 1882, and John Robert Stuart in 1885.[8] Crowell cut costs by consolidating every step of the processing-grading, cleaning, hulling, cutting, rolling, packaging, and shipping -in one factory operating at Ravenna, Ohio. Stuart operated mills in Chicago and Cedar ...

The major determinants of cereal import demand in 7 4 less-developed countries (LDCs) were analysed using an econometric cross-sectional model. Key explanatory factors included the level of income and degree of urbanization, financial capacity proxies, and domestic grain supply variables. A major innovation involved the analysis of the impact of income distribution on LDC cereal import demand in 1986 and 1987 for a more restricted sample of 23 nations. These~ developing countries exhibit a greater than proportional increase in cereal imports due to an increase in the income share of the poorest 40 percent of their populations. The inclusion of regional slope and intercept dummies in the cereal import demand model also provides improved results. High levels of government debt appear to have inhibited cereal imports in nations in South America but not in Asia and Africa. In all three continental regions, particularly Africa, there is a positive relationship between food aid and cereal imports. The model
