A method for producing high surface area, thermally stable, microporous porous ceramic materials involves replacing a portion of the silicon in a sol or gel comprising silica (silicon dioxide) with cations of another metal. The metal-substituted silica sols are dried and fired to yield porous ceramic materials. Similarly, metal-substituted gels are fired to yield porous ceramic materials. When compared with unsubstituted silica materials, the materials thus produced offer advantageous benefits including improved stability in a basic environment, enhanced thermal stability, and advantageous surface properties such as intrinsic negative charge.
Efficient delivery of growth factors from carrier biomaterials depends critically on the release kinetics of the proteins that constitute the carrier. Immobilizing growth factors to calcium phosphate ceramics has been attempted by direct adsorption and usually resulted in a rapid and passive release of the superficially adherent proteins. The insufficient retention of growth factors limited their bioavailability and their efficacy in the treatment of bone regeneration. In this study, a coprecipitation technique of proteins and calcium phosphate was employed to modify the delivery of proteins from biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramics. To this end, tritium-labeled bovine serum albumin ([3H]BSA) was utilized as a model protein to analyze the coprecipitation efficacy and the release kinetics of the protein from the carrier material. Conventional adsorption of [3H]BSA resulted in a rapid and passive release of the protein from BCP ceramics, whereas the coprecipitation technique effectively ...
Bioglass 45S5, commonly referred to by its commercial name Bioglass, is a glass specifically composed of 45 wt% SiO2, 24.5 wt% CaO, 24.5 wt% Na2O, and 6.0 wt% P2O5. Glasses are non-crystalline amorphous solids that are commonly composed of silica-based materials with other minor additives. Compared to soda-lime glass (commonly used, as in windows or bottles), Bioglass 45S5 contains less silica and higher amounts of calcium and phosphorus. The 45S5 name signifies glass with 45 weight % of SiO2 and 5:1 molar ratio of calcium to phosphorus. This high ratio of calcium to phosphorus promotes formation of apatite crystals; calcium and silica ions can act as crystallization nuclei. Lower Ca:P ratios do not bond to bone. Bioglass 45S5s specific composition is optimal in biomedical applications because of its similar composition to that of hydroxyapatite, the mineral component of bone. This similarity provides Bioglass ability to be integrated with living bone. This composition of bioactive glass is ...
The popularity of Metal-on-Metal (MoM) hip implants, which are typically made out of cobalt and chromium, has made cobalt poisoning of the eye more common. August 1, 2017, 1:30PM. We present a 71-year-old male with grinding sensations in his right hip following ceramic-on-ceramic total hip arthroplasty (THA). In 1966, a curious case of cobalt poisoning occurred in Canada. On 29 June 2017, the UK Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agencys (MHRA) published updated advice regarding metal-on-metal (MoM) hip replacement implants. Hip replacement lawsuits claim patients were left with serious side effects due to device design or defects. So, when he himself needed a new hip back in 2006, he knew exactly what he wanted - a metal-on-metal hip replacement made by device manufacturer DePuy. 2006 Oct;77(5):830-2. doi: 10.1080/17453670610013079. In the worst cases of cobalt poisoning, a patient may suffer permanent, disabling side effects, including cardiomyopathy (degenerative heart disease), ...

PURPOSE & DESIGN:. The investigators are currently following up a cohort of patients all of whom have had a metal on ceramic total hip arthroplasty.. This new bearing couple has been approved for use in the UK for some time and has recently achieved USA FDA approval.. The attraction of this bearing couple is a low rate of wear with reduced complications associated with ceramic on ceramic bearing such as bearing fracture.. Of recent media attention has been the unacceptably high failure of the DePuy ASR metal on metal hip resurfacing. This metal on metal bearing couple has been associated with increased ion levels and chromosome abnormalities in vivo.. In vitro studies and small in vivo studies have revealed much lower wear, particle numbers and ion levels in ceramic on metal studies than in metal on metal bearing surfaces; however there is no large scale evidence that this is the case.. The investigators currently are following up the largest worldwide series of ceramic on metal bearings and ...

CERAMIC COATINGS ARE AN ALTERNATIVE TO organic or polymer based coatings for selected surface coating applications. When protecting a surface, it is usually less expensive to use organic coatings rather than other materials such as ceramic coatings. However, organic paints have limitations and will not meet all service requirements. Though more expensive, for some applications ceramic coatings may be a more suitable form of protection. Vitreous (glassy) ceramic coatings are chosen for application over a substrate for one or more of several reasons [1]. These reasons for selecting a ceramic coating in preference to an organic paint include rendering the surface more chemically inert, impervious to liquids and gases, more readily cleanable, and more resistant to service temperature, abrasion, and scratching. The chemical durability of ceramic coatings in service substantially exceeds that of organic paints [2]. Vitreous coatings are formulated to be resistant to a variety of reagents, from acids ...
In an effort to develop chemically bonded phosphate ceramics for mixed waste stabilization, a collaborative project to develop iron-phosphate based ceramics has been initiated between Argonne National Laboratory and the V. G. Khlopin Radium Institute in St. Petersburg, Russia. The starter powders are oxides of iron that are generated as inexpensive byproduct materials in the iron and steel industry. They contain iron oxides as a mixture of magnetite (Fe{sub 3}O{sub 4}) and haematite (Fe{sub 2}O{sub 3}). In this initial phase of this project, both of these compounds were investigated independently. Each was reacted with phosphoric acid solution to form iron phosphate ceramics. In the case of magnetite, the reaction was rapid. Adding ash as the waste component containing hazardous contaminants resulted in a dense and hard ceramic rich in glassy phase. On the other hand, the reaction of phosphoric acid solution with a mixture of haematite and ash waste contaminated with cesium and americium was too slow.

Thick opaque ceramic coatings are used to protect delicate microelectronic devices against excited energy sources, radiation, light, abrasion, and wet etching techniques. The thick opaque ceramic coating are prepared from a mixture containing phosphoric anhydride, i.e., phosphorous pentoxide (P2 O5), and a pre-ceramic silicon-containing material. It is preferred to also include tungsten carbide (WC) and tungsten metal (W) in the coating mixture. The coating is pyrolyzed to form a ceramic SiO2 containing coating. A second coating of plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposited (PECVD) silicon carbide (SiC), diamond, or silicon nitride (Si3 N4), can be applied over the thick opaque ceramic coating to provide hermeticity. These coatings are useful on patterned wafers, electronic devices, and electronic substrates. The thick opaque ceramic coating is unique because it is resistant to etching using wet chemicals, i.e., acids such as H3 PO4 and H2 SO4, or bases.

Bioglass 45S5, one of the most important formulations, is composed of SiO2, Na2O, CaO and P2O5. Professor Larry Hench developed Bioglass at the University of Florida in the late 1960s. He was challenged by a MASH army officer to develop a material to help regenerate bone, as many Vietnam war veterans suffered badly from bone damage, such that most of them injured in this way lost their limbs. The composition was originally selected because of being roughly eutectic.[7] The 45S5 name signifies glass with 45 wt.% of SiO2 and 5:1 molar ratio of Calcium to Phosphorus. Lower Ca/P ratios do not bond to bone.[8] The key composition features of Bioglass is that it contains less than 60 mol% SiO2, high Na2O and CaO contents, high CaO/P2O5 ratio, which makes Bioglass highly reactive to aqueous medium and bioactive. High bioactivity is the main advantage of Bioglass, while its disadvantages includes mechanical weakness, low fracture resistance due to amorphous 2-dimensional glass network. The bending ...

The wear mechanism in such multiphase composite materials is very complex and depends upon several factors, such as volume fraction, distribution, and morphology of the ceramic particles.22 Under ideal conditions, a monolithic ceramic such as TiB2 is expected to fail in a brittle manner.1 However, the presence of the softer matrix phase, iron, between the hard ceramic particles alters the wear nature of monolithic TiB2. It has been mentioned and validated earlier that iron acts as an excellent binder for titanium-based refractory ceramics.23-25 This prevents the debonding at the TiB2 particle/iron matrix interface.18 The strength of the TiB2/Fe interface has already been addressed at the microstructural, chemical, and atomic level. Under such materials conditions, iron-based matrix phases deform plastically to accommodate the high stresses experienced by TiB2 particles. This prevents brittle fracture and fragmentation of TiB2 ceramic particles. Hence, chipping off is prevented, and no loose ...

Bone related diseases and disorders are a significant socioeconomic burden in the United States. Autografts and allografts are most commonly used for the treatment of bone defects and non-unions; however, they are associated with limitations such as donor site morbidity and immune rejection, respectively. Over the past few decades, bone tissue engineering (BTE) using scaffold and cells has garnered significant interest as an alternative method for the repair and regeneration of bone defects. Recreation of the tissue microenvironment via the development of biomimetic scaffolds that resemble the physicochemical aspects (i.e., composition, topography, stiffness) of native bone is a promising approach that has been previously shown to improve scaffold properties and augment cellular response. In this realm, collagen type I and bioactive glass (Bioglass 45S5 (BG); an osteostimulative glass-ceramic) have been combined in numerous studies to generate hybrid scaffolds that mimic the organic and ...

Various types of grafts have been traditionally used to restore damaged bones. In the late 1960s, a strong interest was raised in studying ceramics as potential bone grafts due to their biomechanical properties. A bit later, such synthetic biomaterials were called bioceramics. In principle, bioceramics can be prepared from diverse materials but this review is limited to calcium orthophosphate-based formulations only, which possess the specific advantages due to the chemical similarity to mammalian bones and teeth. During the past 40 years, there have been a number of important achievements in this field. Namely, after the initial development of bioceramics that was just tolerated in the physiological environment, an emphasis was shifted towards the formulations able to form direct chemical bonds with the adjacent bones. Afterwards, by the structural and compositional controls, it became possible to choose whether the calcium orthophosphate-based implants remain biologically stable once incorporated into
There is great need to purify the contaminated water which the poor people in Africa have access to, and make it safe for drinking in a way that is affordable and effective. A particular challenge is the removal of pathogenic bacteria and viruses, which traditionally are eliminated by expensive nano-filtration or reverse osmosis. An added requirement is satisfying the recent recommendation of the WHO for household water-treatment systems to eliminate 99.99% of microbial contamination, which is proving exceptionally difficult to achieve in poor countries at a cost they can afford. We report on the successful testing of a low-cost, locally produced ceramic filter that has the potential to meet the WHO criterion at a cost of US$10 per year. In one version the filter consisted of a silver-impregnated, highly porous ceramic; in another modification silver nano particles were incorporated on the ceramic surface. The silver-impregnated filter was tested on water samples contaminated with selected Gram ...

In accordance with the present invention, there is provided a method for adhering a first ceramic foam to a second ceramic foam. The method begins with impregnating a liquid resin with reinforcement fibers to form a liquid reinforced bonding resin. The liquid reinforced bonding resin is then applied to at least one of the ceramic foams. The foams are joined to each other with the liquid reinforced bonding resin disposed therebetween. The liquid reinforced bonding resin is cured to form a solid reinforced bonding resin. The solid reinforced bonding resin is pyrolyzed for adhering the first and second ceramic foams to form a ceramic bonding layer. The ceramic bonding layer is characterized by a porous ceramic matrix with reinforcement fibers disposed therein.

DOI: 10.11607/jomi.4020 Purpose: The aim of this study was to determine the effect of collagenated biphasic calcium phosphate (CBCP) loaded with fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF-2) on bone regeneration in a rabbit sinus model. Materials and Methods: Bilateral sinus augmentations were performed using either FGF-2 loaded CBCP (FGF-2 group) or CBCP only (control group) in 10 rabbits. The experimental animals were euthanized at 2 weeks (n = 5) or 4 weeks (n = 5) postoperatively. Volumetric analyses were done by means of microcomputed tomography and histomorphometry. Results: The volumes of total augmentation, new bone, residual material, and fibrovascular tissue were significantly greater in the FGF-2 group than in the control group at 2 weeks, but the differences between the two groups had disappeared by 4 weeks. Histologically, the healing patterns, such as new bone formation and the resorption of residual material, did not differ notably between the two groups. The results of the histometric ...

Using melt mixing, we produced a ceramic/polymer composite with a matrix of polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) and a filler of 5 vol.% Ni-deposited CaCu{sub 3}Ti{sub 4}O{sub 12} core-shell ceramic particles (CCTO@Ni), and studied its prominent dielectric characteristics for the first. Its phase composition and morphology were analyzed by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, respectively. After treating the composite films with various durations of a magnetic field treatment, we compared their dielectric properties. We found that the CCTO@Ni ceramic had a typical urchin-like core-shell structure, and that different durations of the magnetic field treatment produced different distributions of ceramic particles in the PVDF matrix. The dielectric permittivity of the untreated CCTO@Ni/PVDF composite was 20% higher than that of neat PVDF, and it had a low loss tangent. However, only the composite treated for 30 min in the magnetic field had an ultra-high dielectric permittivity of 1.41 × ...
Researchers at Tokyo Metropolitan University have developed a new method to make ceramic-based flexible electrolyte sheets for lithium metal batteries. They combined a garnet-type ceramic, a polymer binder, and an ionic liquid, producing a quasi-solid-state sheet electrolyte. The synthesis is carried out at room temperature, requiring significantly less energy than existing high-temperature (,1,000° C) processes. It functions over a wide range of temperatures, making it a promising electrolyte for batteries in EVs. Lithium metal anodes have a much higher theoretical capacity than the graphite anodes currently in commercial use, but in liquid-based batteries, lithium dendrites can grow, possibly short-circuiting the battery and even leading to fires and explosions. Solid-state inorganic electrolytes are safer, and a garnet-type ceramic, Li7La3Zr2O12, better known as LLZO, is now widely regarded as a promising solid-state electrolyte material for its high ionic conductivity and compatibility with ...

Recent finds of 36 ceramic artifacts from the archaeological site of Vela Spila, Croatia, offer the first evidence of ceramic figurative art in late Upper Palaeolithic Europe, c. 17,500-15,000 years before present (BP). The size and diversity of this artistic ceramic assemblage indicate the emergence of a social tradition, rather than more ephemeral experimentation with a new material. Vela Spila ceramics offer compelling technological and stylistic comparisons with the only other evidence of a developed Palaeolithic ceramic tradition found at the sites of Pavlov I and Dolní Věstonice I, in the Czech Republic, c. 31,000-27,000 cal BP. Because of the 10,000-year gap between the two assemblages, the Vela Spila ceramics are interpreted as evidence of an independent invention of this technology. Consequently, these artifacts provide evidence of a new social context in which ceramics developed and were used to make art in the Upper Palaeolithic.

Apatite based glass-ceramics are some of the most bioactive materials found to date. They do not require fibrous encapsulation and bond to bone directly through an apatite layer. Apatite based glass-ceramics exhibit relatively poor biaxial flexural strength, hence limiting their applications to non-load bearing implants. The addition of mica results in a material that is highly machinable, and provided that a suitable interlocking microstructure can be produced, the strength will be increased. The aim of this work is to investigate how altering the heat treatment affects the crystallisation and the final mechanical properties of three different compositions of glass-ceramic. The glass system studied is the ternary glass system; barium fluorphlogopite (Bao.sMgafSiaAlOiojFz), fluorapatite (CaiofPO^eFz) and cordierite (MgzAUSisOis). The three compositions differ by the mol% of fluorapatite forming feedstock in the precursor glass. Glass-ceramics formed by heat-treating a glassy precursor are ...

Microporous glass ceramic with skeleton of CaTi4(PO¬4)6 with average pore size of 12.7 nm has been synthesized and used as a carrier of glucose oxidase. The glass ceramic was prepared by controlled heat treatment of glass samples, which causes the phase separation in their structure and creates CaTi4(PO¬4)6 and β-Ca3(PO4)2 phases. The β-Ca3(PO4)2 phase was dissolved by soaking the glass ceramics in HCl and CaTi4(PO¬4)6 built the skeleton of microporous glass ceramic. Analysis of the ability of the carrier for immobilization of glucose oxidase (GOx) was undertaken. Average amount of immobilized enzyme and percentage of enzyme activity on the carrier were 27 gr GOx/gr carrier and 60.15%, respectively. Effect of pH and temperature variations on the enzyme activity has been studied and results demonstrated that maximum activity for both free and immobilized enzyme was at T=40˚C and pH=7.0. Due to the same value of maximum activity, no serious conformational change of enzyme had taken place through
A high purity α-tricalcium phosphate ceramic having a superior biocompatibility for use mainly as a bone filler, is produced by shaping a powder material formed by a wet method, followed by sintering it and then cooling at a predetermined rate.
Hydroxyapatite (HA) is a particular crystal form and composition of a larger family of calcium phosphates. Calcium phosphate ceramics are perhaps the most biocompatible synthetic substances for use in hard tissue repair with over 15 years of clinical history. The high degree of biocompatibility is a feature of HA and is largely attributable to its natural presence in bone. When HA is implanted into a bony site it has been shown to be slowly absorbed into the body and replaced by new bone. [2 ...

For a clean, smooth-pedaling drivetrain, look no further than Finish Lines Ceramic Wax Lubricant. Its ceramic bonding technology allows you to greatly extend your re-lubing intervals for maximum durability and convenience. In fact, every time you apply the lube, it builds on the ceramic coating and the result is a chain so slippery even dirt has a hard time sticking! Think efficient. Think quiet. Think Finish Line! - With each application the ceramic coating is enhanced, ultimately providing the durability of many oil-based lubricants - No wetness or stickiness so dirt and grime will not be attracted or absorbed by the lubricant - Helps avoid abrasive wear allowing parts to run more smoothly and last longer - As the white ceramic particles embed themselves on the chain they will displace grime, causing a grey or black film to form on top of the wax coating. Over 2-3 applications this will lessen or cease. This discoloration is normal and will not compromise performance ...

Porous organic polymer membranes reinforced with ceramic particles are applied in Lithium ion batteries as separators between anodes and cathodes. The mechanical stability of these separators, which are filled with a Li-ion conducting electrolyte, determine the maximum operating temperatures of the batteries and improve their resistance against short circuits or hot spots. The IKTS develops Li ion conducting filler materials based on glass ceramics. Beside the mechanical stabilizing effect these types of inorganic fillers can contribute to the overall conductivity of the separator-electrolyte arrangement. ...

The solid-state synthesis and structural characterisation of perovskite BaSn1−xScxO3−δ (x = 0.0, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4) and its corresponding hydrated ceramics are reported. Powder and neutron X-ray diffractions reveal the presence of cubic perovskites (space group Pm[3 with combining macron]m) with an increasing cell parameter as a function of scandium concentration along with some indication of phase segregation. 119Sn and 45Sc solid-state NMR spectroscopy data highlight the existence of oxygen vacancies in the dry materials, and their filling upon hydrothermal treatment with D2O. It also indicates that the Sn4+ and Sc3+ local distribution at the B-site of the perovskite is inhomogeneous and suggests that the oxygen vacancies are located in the scandium dopant coordination shell at low concentrations (x ≤ 0.2) and in the tin coordination shell at high concentrations (x ≥ 0.3). 17O NMR spectra on 17O enriched BaSn1−xScxO3−δ materials show the existence of Sn-O-Sn, Sn-O-Sc and Sc-O-Sc ...
