Formerly located in Elgin on the SE corner of DuPage and Channing Streets. This was formerly the cemetery for the city of Elgin. Commencing in 1889, the premises went through a series of upheavals as movements to make the Bluff City Cemetery (in Cook County) the cemetery for the city took shape and went into action. That year the land for Bluff City was purchased. Shortly afterwards lot owners were contacted and told that they were to have their family remains moved out of Channing, yet new interments continued there until about 1906 when they were terminated completely. By about 1910 the cemetery had deteriorated into a weed-infested field, and many of the stones had fallen to the ground and were barely visible. In 1920 the monument commemorating those who served during the wars was removed to Bluff City. The Armistice Day services were switched to Bluff City, and the fate of Channing was sealed. Construction equipment had been moved in to re-landscape the area in 1915 well before the bodies ...

The former Brooklyn Naval Hospital Cemetery is located in the southeast corner of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Established on the shores of Wallabout Bay, the Navy Yard served as Americas premier Naval shipbuilding facility from 1801 until 1966. Today the 300-acre industrial park is owned by the City of New York and managed by the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC).. In 1824, the Navy purchased nearby land to build the Brooklyn Naval Hospital, which included the cemetery site. Opened in 1838, the Hospital became a leading center of medical innovation, developing new techniques in anesthetics, wound care, and physical therapy. The hospital closed in 1948, but the property remained in use as a Naval receiving station until 1990.. The Brooklyn Naval Hospital Cemetery was active from 1831 to 1910 and was the burial site for more than 2,000 people, most of them officers and enlisted men of the US Navy and Marine Corps. Among those buried were two Congressional Medal of Honor winners, a ...
I hope it stays that way," he said of it being a lone incident. "Its always bothered me that we couldnt find out who he was.". He said the county Department of Social Services picked up the costs of embalming and the casket, and the man was buried at the Albany Rural Cemetery, which has a section dedicated to the indigent.. Now, that is the common procedure for not only the unidentified, but those who die without the means to pay, or family to pick up the cost, for any postmortem details.. It wasnt always like that, said former Assemblyman Jack McEneny, a longtime county historian. The shift in Albany County happened under then Welfare Commissioner Francis Schreck in the 1960s, McEneny said, when he negotiated a deal with the cemeteries proper for them to set aside some earth for those who otherwise have no place else to rest their souls.. Every major cemetery in the county has a potters field, but prior to that and other regulations, it was common practice across Albany County and the U.S. ...
Older cemeteries are visible, tangible links with people who made history - ordinary individuals as well as famous people. But a cemetery is more than a collection of interesting historical data, as precious and revealing as that may be. It is also a place - an open space populated by monuments and vegetation, altogether forming a very particular and revealing part of our built environment. The early life of Thascius Caecilius Cyprianus is largely unknown except that information from his writings. The date of his birth is unknown but is believed to be about 200 in Carthage. He came from an eminent non-Christian family, apparently of some wealth. He was well educated in rhetoric. He came to Christianity after finding himself disgusted with the ostentatious wealth, corrupt justice, and a society of bloodthirstiness and cruelty. During his journey to Christianity, he was guided by his friend, the priest Cecilius. He found that through the experience of baptism he was liberated and cleansed from his old life and given a new birth, armed with the heavenly gift of the Holy Spirit. When he was baptized is unknown as are the dates he became a deacon or priest. Near the end of 248, after the death of Bp. Donatus of Carthage, he was chosen, by the voice of the people, bishop of Carthage with opposition from a small group elderly Carthaginian presbyters including Novatus who would cause him ...

IN-DEPTH FEATURES Burial in Jerusalem: The Har Menuchos Cemetery. by M. Samsonowitz. Part III. For two thousand years, it has been the dream and hope of many individuals to be buried in Jerusalem. This is a report of the situation today.. If Bituach Leumi pays only the burial costs, who is funding the cemetery development?. As you may have guessed, its the good Jews abroad who want to be buried in Israel whose payments cover this expense. The Chevra Kadishas market grave plots to Jews abroad, and they charge a not inconsiderable price for them. The standard cost for ones "makom bechayim" is $5,000 for the karka, and another $2,000-2,500 for burial costs. Add to this another $3,500-5,000 for transportation, and being buried in Jerusalem is $11,000. The total cost is not unreasonable in comparison to burial in many places abroad, and the gemora says that anyone buried in Israel has a special kaporoh. $10,000 is also not that much in comparison to the savings and pensions that many people have ...
Oliphant set aside a small patch of his land in the Strawberry Hills east of Saskatoon, and obtained a provincial cemetery licence. He said it will be "first die, first served" for the dozen gravesites, which he is offering for free. While he and his wife plan to be buried there, he is not signing anyone up in advance.. He is also accepting cremated remains on his quarter section. There is room for as many as "people want to dump on the land," he said.. "It seems like its a bit of a shame to have to buy a cemetery plot if theyve got no other option.". As for grave markers, he said "Im not keen on it, but I think thats negotiable." A flat stone that a lawn mower could go over would be okay, or loved ones could plant a tree, he added. ...

I am fortunate to have a magnificent location for wildflowers just a short walk from where I live. The information on this site is taken from the book"Woods Prairie Cemetery". The history of Woods Prairie Cemetery goes back to the very beginning of the settlement of Texas. Zadock Woods came to Texas in 1823 and went back to Tray Missouri in 1824 and brought his family back to what would become Fayette County, Texas. He was married to Minerva Cottle and they had 5 children who came to Texas with them. Minerva, Montreville, Norman B., Henry Gonzales and Leander. He built a fort at Woods Prairie in 1828 on his son Montrevilles land. It was the settlers protection against the still marauding Indians. The last Indian threat was the Battle of Plum Creek in 1840. The next threat was from Mexico. Many of the men from Woods Prairie joined a company to fight the Mexicans had invaded Texas. Zadock Woods was an old man but joined anyway. He and 35 others were killed in the Dawson Creek Massacre. They were later buried on Monument Hill. Next week, I will have lived in Columbus for 21 years. Theres a large Victorian cemetery on the west side of town called Greenlawn Cemetery, which describes itself as "a very special park." Until today, I had never been to Greenlawn. Since it was Memorial Day today, Susan and I decided to pay it a visit in an effort to pay tribute to some of the many military veterans who rest there. It will remind visitors of Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, Laurel Hill Cemetery in Philadelphia, or Spring Grove Cemetery in Cincinnati-as much Victorian destination as cemetery.. We didnt get a formal tour, although there were formal tours being offered. That means we missed a lot. Among the interesting graves we missed were Capt. Eddie Rickenbackers, a Buffalo Soldier who was awarded the Medal of Honor during the Indian wars, and a soldier who was awarded the Medal of Honor for carrying water to the Reno/Benteen battalion at the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Samuel P. Bush, the grandfather of Pres. George H. ...

Carthage jail deserves a post all its own. i was so moved by the spirit that resides here and especially impressed by the preservation of it all. we were so fortunate to be able to tour the jail with just our family. its an amazing experience to walk through the cooking area and the dining area and know and be able to envision the stories that we have heard about Joseph Smiths experience there at Carthage. Joseph and Hyrum often shared a meal with the family who owned the home that the prison was in and were well respected by them. it was an amazing experience to walk up the exact stairs that Joseph and the others must have done every day (they still have the original stair rail). i was especially moved by the spirit in the "dungeon room" where Joseph and Hyrum were held at the beginning of their imprisonment. they were later transferred to a bedroom where they would be more comfortable and eventually meet their fate. as we walked into this room, we noticed the hole in the door that has been ...
3.4 Parish Councils have no statutory duty to provide a burial ground. Villagers, however expect them to make provision, or have provision made available by a Local Authority. All the inhabitants of a Civil Parish, whether churchgoers or not, have a lawful right to be buried in their Parish Churchs Churchyard, even if it is full and regardless of their religion, unless it has been properly closed by an Order in Council via the Secretary of State. Normally when there is such a closure, alternative burial provision is available locally. In the case of Harlington, there is no District Cemetery or easily accessible alternative except the cemeteries and churchyards of nearby villages, or the use of large town burial grounds such as at Lutons Butterfield Green Cemetery where public transport access is so awkward that car travel is the only practical means for relatives to visit graves or memorials ...
Green cemeteries are burial grounds where care of the land is a primary concern. The land is preserved in its natural state forever. Burials are limited in number using only 10-30% of the land. Natural burials occur in harmony with nature without any toxic chemicals. Upon death, the body is allowed to return to the earth entering into the natural cycle of life. There are certain rules and standards that must be practiced in order to be considered a green cemetery, with different levels of certification. Typically green cemeteries do not allow embalming fluids or cement vaults. Containers are made from unfinished and non-precious woods, and no metal is allowed. Full body burials are encouraged as this is less harmful to the environment than cremation, but both methods are acceptable. Full body burial in a biodegradable covering/shroud/blanket, has the least environmental impact and is the choice encouraged at the Natural Path Sanctuary green cemetery ...
Aim. To perform a genetic characterization of 7 skeletons from medieval age found in a burial site in the Aragonese Pyrenees. Methods. Allele frequencies of autosomal short tandem repeats (STR) loci were determined by 3 different STR systems. Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Y-chromosome haplogroups were determined by sequencing of the hypervariable segment 1 of mtDNA and typing of phylogenetic Y chromosome single nucleotide polymorphisms (Y-SNP) markers, respectively. Possible familial relationships were also investigated. Results. Complete or partial STR profiles were obtained in 3 of the 7 samples. Mitochondrial DNA haplogroup was determined in 6 samples, with 5 of them corresponding to the haplogroup H and 1 to the haplogroup U5a. Y-chromosome haplogroup was determined in 2 samples, corresponding to the haplogroup R. In one of them, the sub-branch R1b1b2 was determined. mtDNA sequences indicated that some of the individuals could be maternally related, while STR profiles indicated no direct ...

The two cemeteries that were mentioned earlier are still there. The passing of time, elements and destruction is taking a toll on the remaining graves. With approximately 11 interments, one of the Pioneer Cemeteries is along the road as you enter from Bouse. One lone white cross remains with a plaque of 9 month old Sandra Lynn Dugas, born September 6, 1936, died May 16, 1937. Obviously the Dugas family still maintains this grave. In this cemetery there is evidence of derelict wooden crosses. Several of the graves have imploded on themselves leaving only an indentation as evidence of these Pioneers final resting places. If you come upon remote pioneer cemeteries, please pay your respect s and leave them in better condition than you find them. These historic sites could be a member of your Pioneer Heritage. Protect, maintain and preserve these historic museums of our heritage. It s against the law to disturb any cemetery in ...
I dont know about you, but I LOVE to walk my dogs, especially if the weather is nice. Maybe Im weird, but I also LOVE to walk through old cemeteries. Frequently, I combine the two and walk my dogs through old cemeteries. Im down like that.. I love to learn about history and cemeteries provide a heaping handful of education. For example, did you know that there is a large Irish population dating back into the mid 1800s buried in the Magnolia Cemetery in downtown Augusta? The old grave markers are gorgeous as well.. Likewise, I enjoy walking through some of the relatively newer cemeteries. Bellevue Memorial Gardens in Grovetown is very nice. There are a lot of Newmans buried there. A LOT! As well, some high school friends now reside there, and I like to check in on them. One friend passed in 1991, and its hard to believe he has been gone that long.. Last summer, the dogs and I were enjoying a stroll through Bellevue when we encountered an elderly man. As meticulous as the grounds are, he was ...

With the remains of around 100 billion dead people currently buried or otherwise stored on this planet, its no surprise that were running out of space for final resting places. The phrase "six feet under" just isnt sustainable anymore, so architects are now looking to the sky as an alternative to sprawling ground cemeteries. High-rise cemeteries are becoming increasingly popular all over the world, and the Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica, in Santos, Brazil, is the highest of them all.. When Pepe Altstut inaugurated the Memorial Necrópole Ecumênica cemetery, in 1983, it was only a very small building, but the demand for above-ground tombs with a view was so great that he kept expanding until his cemetery became the tallest in the world. Today, it measures 108 meters tall, features 25,000 storing units (tombs, if you will), several wake rooms, crypts, mausoleums, a peacock garden with its own small waterfall and even a chapel and snack bar on the roof.. While few regular cemeteries can be ...
