Haases property was accessible by train and had good drainage; the land would make an ideal cemetery. Gradually, Haase began to sell his land. Along Madison Street to the north, German Lutherans established Concordia Cemetery in 1872, and the northeast corner of todays Forest Home Cemetery was purchased by a group of German fraternal lodges which established German Waldheim Cemetery in 1873 (Sections in this area are generally identified by letters of the alphabet). According to Bernhard Ludwig Roos, the first superintendent of Waldheim, they took this step because Concordia Cemetery would not permit lodge insignias to be placed on cemetery markers. Over this intolerance…[they] founded a cemetery where everyone could repose after his own fashion. This Waldheim, or forest home, was advertised as the only German, non-denominational cemetery in the Chicago area ...

Gettysburg National Cemetery is a United States national cemetery created for Union casualties of the July 1 to 3, 1863 Battle of Gettysburg in the American Civil War. It is located just outside Gettysburg Borough, in Adams County, Pennsylvania. The land was part of the Gettysburg Battlefield, and the cemetery is within Gettysburg National Military Park. Originally called Soldiers National Cemetery, U.S. President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address at the cemeterys consecration, November 19, 1863. The cemetery contains 3,512 interments from the Civil War, including the graves of 979 unknowns. It also has sections for veterans of the Spanish-American War, World War I, and other wars, along with graves of the veterans spouses and children. The total number of interments exceeds 6,000. Battlefield monuments, memorials, and markers are scattered throughout the cemetery, and its stone walls, iron fences and gates, burial and section markers, and brick sidewalk are listed as ...
Is the Municipal Cemetery and adjacent Sunnyside haunted? Perhaps. That well may have been the reason a black team of horses belonging to the City Livery Inn ran away the morning of May 21, 1907, during the return trip from Signal Hill Cemetery after the funeral services of Mrs. Mary Boyd (?-5/1907). The persons in the rig, including the driver, jumped shortly after the horses began to show symptoms of unruliness, and were uninjured. The horses ran down Pine Avenue to Ocean Avenue and east to Alamitos Avenue. Several times serious collisions were narrowly averted. The spooked horses were stopped before any damage was done. (LA Herald 5/21/1907).. Cemeteries seem to be a popular place for ghosts, perhaps because of the theory that there are spirit portals and doorways in many burial grounds. Could this be true of Long Beach cemeteries? As mentioned in my earlier book Haunted Long Beach 2, there are several reported ghosts still hanging out at both Sunnyside and the Municipal Cemetery. There ...
Perpetual care cemeteries are for-profit businesses that own the cemetery grounds. They are who you speak with to purchase a cemetery plot and pay for the burial. Typically, they also offer memorials. At Remembrance Memorials we provide more design options at a higher quality but do so at a cost savings to you versus a standard perpetual care cemetery. If your loved one is buried at a perpetual care cemetery, KNOW YOUR RIGHTS. You have the right to purchase your memorial from whomever you choose without any penalties whatsoever. There are no additional fees or services withheld. There are certain rules and regulations that must be followed and Remembrance Memorials handles *all* of these details for you. ...

At least nine memorials were damaged at Lakeside Cemetery on North State Street in Dover. A reward of up to $1,000 is being offered for information leading to the arrest of the person or persons responsible for a nighttime vandalism spree at Lakeside Cemetery on North State Street in Dover.. Dover Police Department spokesman Master Cpl. Mark Hoffman said that sometime between 6 p.m. Wednesday, March 13, and 8:19 a.m. Thursday, March 14, one or more persons damaged a number of memorials or headstones in the cemetery.. Cemetery caretaker Danny Waite reviewed the damage Thursday afternoon, observing that at least nine stones or markers had been vandalized. All were along the rear of the cemetery on the Silver Lake shoreline, away from the North State Street front of the property, Waite said the last time such vandalism took place at Lakeside was about 10 years ago.. Although the damage appeared to be random, some of the mutilated stones belonged to members of Dovers well-known Richardson family ...

Richardson Cemetery, a two-acre plot designated as a burying ground on March 1, 1867, and neglected for many years, has found a resurgence of interest after Bernie Wilde of the Arnold Historical Society, took on the task of reclaiming it in 2008.. Where is it? It t is located on Richardson Road, one-half mile West of I-55 and Vogel Road intersection.. The earliest Arnold settlers are buried there. There are about 239 graves in this cemetery. A deed of land recorded March 1, 1867, lists the owners of Skelton and Mary Richardson. For many years, one person did the grass-mowing, but trees and brush were overgrown, making it difficult to see the gravestones and history inside the cemetery. The large enclosed wall contains the Richardson family and all who married into the family.. In 2010, the Arnold Historical Society began to clean up the cemetery. One of the first civic endeavors was to replace the rusted entrance sign. A new sign which matches the original sign was made in 2010 by Warren Sign ...

This location served as the Township Cemetery until 1870, when 40 acres of land was purchased for $5 per acre from the Flint and Pere Marquette Railroad for a new cemetery. In the fall of that year the southwest portion of the parcel was laid out for burials and use of the original cemetery was discontinued. By 1879 many of the remains had been moved by families to the present cemetery site. The Township then received permission from the State to move the remaining bodies to the new site ...
The idea for a Northern Maine Veterans Cemetery was conceived and presented to Governor Angus King in the fall of 1998. Impressed with the idea, Governor King impaneled a committee of Maine Veterans and Veterans Service Organizations to study the feasibility of constructing a cemetery in Northern Maine. The committee consisting of Donald F. Collins, Walter Corey, James R. Day Jr., Wilfred Deane, Richard Edgecomb, Zane A. Grant, Camille Lausier, Peter F. Miesburger, Jack Myers and Frederick Ormezzani conducted a study to ascertain interest in and demand for a veterans cemetery in Aroostook County. The study results indicated an overwhelming support by the veteran community in local burials. Many veterans and family members commented that the geographical location of the cemetery in Augusta made the bereavement and memorial process difficult.. A report detailing the study results was formally filed with Governor King and the legislators in December of 1998. In February 1999, an act was signed ...

We first visited Findlay Cemetery back in 2005 with the hope of glimpsing the ghost lady but we just encountered idiots and the police. It was a nice summer night for an evening investigation. The moon was full and the cemetery was lit up. The place is small but well-taken care of. We wandered in and headed towards the back where it was wooded and more private. Small tombstones trickled into the woods making for an eerie little graveyard forest. It was also rumored to be a more paranormally active part of the cemetery so we set up some basic equipment - the usual audio and video recorders.. In the middle of the cemetery was an old, broken tombstone - its top half missing and the bottom held up by two wooden posts. At some point in time, it became known as the grave of the Ada Witch. People had left trinkets, coins, and candles by it so there was no doubt that we were looking at the right spot. Seeing there was no historical evidence backing the legend, there was no evidence that the grave ...
Formerly located in Elgin on the SE corner of DuPage and Channing Streets. This was formerly the cemetery for the city of Elgin. Commencing in 1889, the premises went through a series of upheavals as movements to make the Bluff City Cemetery (in Cook County) the cemetery for the city took shape and went into action. That year the land for Bluff City was purchased. Shortly afterwards lot owners were contacted and told that they were to have their family remains moved out of Channing, yet new interments continued there until about 1906 when they were terminated completely. By about 1910 the cemetery had deteriorated into a weed-infested field, and many of the stones had fallen to the ground and were barely visible. In 1920 the monument commemorating those who served during the wars was removed to Bluff City. The Armistice Day services were switched to Bluff City, and the fate of Channing was sealed. Construction equipment had been moved in to re-landscape the area in 1915 well before the bodies ...

The Farina Cemetery is located around 2km to the North-West of the Farina township, and was used from around 1883 to 1972. It is located on Section 89 within the suburban area of Farina, comprising 5 acres and granted on the 7th July 1887. The land was granted under the Crown Lands Act 1886 to a group of men living at Farina, and it is likely that they formed the initial committee of management for the Cemetery. These men were Frank Wilkinson (Clerk), Ronald Ewan McDonald (Storekeeper), John Napier (Storekeeper), George Tyler White (Publican) and John James Doig (Blacksmith). A copy of the information board located at the Cemetery can be viewed here.. The following 244 people listed are either known to be buried in the Cemetery or are from Farina and their dates of death are known.. ...

The Hooglede German Military cemetery (Deutscher Soldatenfriedhof Hooglede in German) is a military cemetery in the Belgian town of Hooglede, six kilometer northwest of Roeselare.
The former Brooklyn Naval Hospital Cemetery is located in the southeast corner of the Brooklyn Navy Yard. Established on the shores of Wallabout Bay, the Navy Yard served as Americas premier Naval shipbuilding facility from 1801 until 1966. Today the 300-acre industrial park is owned by the City of New York and managed by the Brooklyn Navy Yard Development Corporation (BNYDC).. In 1824, the Navy purchased nearby land to build the Brooklyn Naval Hospital, which included the cemetery site. Opened in 1838, the Hospital became a leading center of medical innovation, developing new techniques in anesthetics, wound care, and physical therapy. The hospital closed in 1948, but the property remained in use as a Naval receiving station until 1990.. The Brooklyn Naval Hospital Cemetery was active from 1831 to 1910 and was the burial site for more than 2,000 people, most of them officers and enlisted men of the US Navy and Marine Corps. Among those buried were two Congressional Medal of Honor winners, a ...

I hope it stays that way, he said of it being a lone incident. Its always bothered me that we couldnt find out who he was.. He said the county Department of Social Services picked up the costs of embalming and the casket, and the man was buried at the Albany Rural Cemetery, which has a section dedicated to the indigent.. Now, that is the common procedure for not only the unidentified, but those who die without the means to pay, or family to pick up the cost, for any postmortem details.. It wasnt always like that, said former Assemblyman Jack McEneny, a longtime county historian. The shift in Albany County happened under then Welfare Commissioner Francis Schreck in the 1960s, McEneny said, when he negotiated a deal with the cemeteries proper for them to set aside some earth for those who otherwise have no place else to rest their souls.. Every major cemetery in the county has a potters field, but prior to that and other regulations, it was common practice across Albany County and the U.S. ...
Mostly when I visit a cemetery, I can separate what it represents from the beauty and peace of the place. I dont see cemeteries as depressing, unless they have been vandalized. Fayoum - Hussein Fathy:. Hundreds of people from the village of drowning in Aitsa in Fayoum, the body of Maha Abdel Basset, and her four children, were mourned amid a state of discontent and anger from the villagers against the father accused of killing his wife and children during the holy month of Ramadan.. The bodies of the wife and her children were carried by two ambulances, and a prayer for the bodies of the victims was held in the vicinity of the cemeteries of the village of Al-Drowned, while the bodies of the rest of the sons were buried in the cemeteries of the husbands family in the cemeteries of the village of Maajun.. In front of both Tariq Al-Sayed and Hossam Al-Maghribi, prosecutors of the Etsa Center, the accused made detailed confessions about how he committed the crime, saying: After the debt accumulated on me and some individuals filed cases with trust receipts that I signed, and they went to my father to demand that he must pay my debts, the world became black in my eyes and ...
Older cemeteries are visible, tangible links with people who made history - ordinary individuals as well as famous people. But a cemetery is more than a collection of interesting historical data, as precious and revealing as that may be. It is also a place - an open space populated by monuments and vegetation, altogether forming a very particular and revealing part of our built environment. Learn about historic cemeteries in Greenville.
There are cemeteries with cheaper, rental vaults, which I presume one rents for a year and a day, until the body has decayed. Also, the wealthy might use a rental vault if several family members die within the same year and they have to wait before placing them all in one vault. The rental vaults for poorer families who have no tomb of their own are set in a huge tomb or, more likely, a long wall of vaults surrounding the cemetery as shown here behind me. This is in the St. Louis One cemetery, which was being remodeled as you see in the upper left corner. I kind of like the old versions myself ...

The early life of Thascius Caecilius Cyprianus is largely unknown except that information from his writings. The date of his birth is unknown but is believed to be about 200 in Carthage. He came from an eminent non-Christian family, apparently of some wealth. He was well educated in rhetoric. He came to Christianity after finding himself disgusted with the ostentatious wealth, corrupt justice, and a society of bloodthirstiness and cruelty. During his journey to Christianity, he was guided by his friend, the priest Cecilius. He found that through the experience of baptism he was liberated and cleansed from his old life and given a new birth, armed with the heavenly gift of the Holy Spirit. When he was baptized is unknown as are the dates he became a deacon or priest. Near the end of 248, after the death of Bp. Donatus of Carthage, he was chosen, by the voice of the people, bishop of Carthage with opposition from a small group elderly Carthaginian presbyters including Novatus who would cause him ...

Along the way, he explained the difference between a cemetery and a graveyard. The latter adjoins a Church. In the mid-19th century rural cemeteries gained popularity - a European trend that made its way to the U.S. On the former grounds of a rice plantation, Magnolia opened its gates to the living and the dead in 1850. Many of the late Charleston elite had requested a move to the new digs in their wills. Visitors traveled quite a distance and would picnic on the grounds. Macy, well-versed in funerary tradition, explained the Victorian customs and attitudes regarding death.. ...

One of the strongest examples I saw at the WMA Annual Meeting that presented best practices in working with space and community was the session, Art and Environment: Cultural Participation in Hybrid Spaces, where I learned about the Evergreen Cemetery project located in Santa Cruz, CA. The speaker of this section was the Chairperson of the Evergreen Cemetery, Sibley Simon. Although the cemetery was part of the Santa Cruz Museum of Art and History, the museum did not know what to do with the cemetery and they asked Simon, who is a non-museum professional, to work with the space. When he arrived to the cemetery, it was covered with wild foliage and inhabited by Santa Cruzs homeless population. Taking on the project with an open mind and different perspective than the average museum professional, he decided to make the project a community effort. The first part involved cleaning up the cemetery. Since this space was their home, many homeless folks joined the project early on and helped clean it ...

Part III Sologubovka - Russia is anchored around the consecration of Europes largest war cemetery in Sologubovka, a small village near St. Petersburg. The five-hectare burial site was chosen by the German War Graves Association, which scouted various cemeteries with the unmarked graves of German soldiers in Russia before deciding on this location. The remains of German soldiers from smaller burial sites in the region were also collected and buried at Sologubovka., which is now the resting place of 60,000 German soldiers, around half of whom have been identified. It is estimated that up to 80,000 will be buried here when the cemetery is completed, making it the largest war cemetery in Russia. This lavish cemetery stands in stark contrast to the one single symbolic grave commemorating hundreds of thousands of Soviet victims that died during Nazi Germanys 900 day siege of Leningrad (the Leningrad Blockade). Incidentally, Susanne Schleyers grandfather fell in 1941 and was reburied in the ...

Democrats hailed the move as a strike against racism, slavery and division, as Ryan warned opponents that they are just going to have to take it when votes dont go their way.. Vandalizing cemeteries has always been a cowardly and sick crime, compounded exponentially when hate is the motivation. It is an attack on peoples grief, on their losses. We are none of us immune to loss and grief. We have all lost people we have loved. Ive lost two in little over a year myself. Its a pain that we all share, with which we all should be able empathize. It is part of the human experience. Which is why those who perpetuate these kinds of crimes are generally reviled by society. Its abhorrent, morally reprehensible act that dehumanizes the criminals who partake in it. Possibly they are amoral or sociopathic, and lack the ability to empathize or acknowledge that others have genuine feelings. Maybe their hate has consumed their humanity. Its not something I understand, or want to understand ...

Another native species flowering in the Cemeterys butterfly garden is blue vervain (Verbena hastata). A tall, herbaceous plant to four feet, blue vervain features numerous flower spikes - some nearly a foot long - that begin in mid-summer into early fall. Verbena hastata belongs to a genus of plants once thought to be a cure-all (the genus Verbena is Latin for Sacred Plant), and indeed the blue vervain is used to treat headaches, cramps, coughs, and fevers. Blue vervain is best suited to moist areas in full sun, where it will colonize by spreading rhizomes (a modified underground stem that will produce roots and shoots). Bumble bees adore Verbena hastata, as well as the verbena bee, which visits only those flowers in the genus Verbena. Blue vervain is a host plant for the Verbena Moth, Verbena Bud Moth, and the Common Buckeye butterfly. As an added bonus, deer typically avoid this plant due to the bitter taste in the leaves.. ...
