The most significant and unexpected relationship to emerge among parameters measured in Cedrela odorata was the inverse correlation between Δ13C and mean ring width. This relationship is most evident during the suppressed growth from 1830 to 1870, when discrimination values peaked. Because mean ring width and Δ13C are temporally covariant, we might conclude that both have responded to a common climatic stimulus. However, the lack of a similar response in δ18Ocx suggests that there may have been no major changes in precipitation amount during this period. Instead, a more likely explanation for this covariance is that there was either a change in the source of CO2, reflected in the value of δ13Catm, or else that factors affecting growth also affected physiology through ci/ca. In fact, it is known that there is a large vertical gradient in δ13Catm within the canopy of tropical rain forests as a result of soil respiration (Buchmann et al. 1997a). Observed values of δ13Catm at the forest floor ...
The Corinthian pilasters and mahogany, red cedar, and cedrela interior fittings (similar to the preceding piece but without carved or gilt shells) readily suggest the bookcase as a product of this designers shop. The construction of the desk interior is also similar to several of the preceding pieces (fig. 49). The interior drawers have thin red cedar frames and bottoms that are rabbeted to the front, sides, and back; the engaged columns are similar to those in the prospect section of the Huntington desk-and-bookcase (fig. 40); and the prospect door is concave, although it lacks the beaded arched fascia. The Joiners of the Frothingham-signed desk hollowed out its inner side surfaces more carefully than those of the preceding bombé desk-and-bookcase (fig. 45) but in the same method. They inlet the beads flanking the ends of the three bottom drawers of the desk into the front edges of the sides, which they left at full thickness. Then, they cut the rear edge of the beads and the corresponding ...
Effect evaluation of using Toona sinensis leaf extract to safe animal products. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effect of adding Toona sinensis powder into sausage processing procedure on the microbial growth and antioxidation activity of sausage. The analyzed items of sausage were pH values, total plate counts, Lactobacillus, Micrococcus counts, water activity, color evaluation, TBARS values and sensory evaluation. The total plate counts of samples were increased following extended the storage period. The total plate counts of adding Toona sinensis sausage were still below 7.0 log CFU/g after 6 weeks food processing. The Lactobacillus counts were also increased at storage experiment and were obviously increased after the fifth week storage. The L values of the treated groups were lower than that of in the control group. The TBARS values of sausage varied within a narrow range during the storage ...

Information on on-going efforts to establish a network on the genetic resources of mahogany in the Neotropics. Based on concern about the genetic integrity of the mahoganies the Panel of Experts on Forest Gene Resources has over the years flagged the urgent need for national, regional and international action to promote and further the conservation and sustainable use of mahogany species. These calls for action are in line with similar recommendations passed by a number of national and international institutes and fora, notably by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES). As a follow-up to a recommendation of the FAO Panel of Experts on Forest Gene Resources, the FAO Forestry Department recently published the report Genetic resources of Swietenia and Cedrela in the Neotropics - Proposal for coordinated action. The report, written as a synthesis paper by Mr. F. Patino of Mexico and based on contractual work for FAO by four experts from Central and South America, ...

A southern population (S) from Xiushui County (29°1′N, 114°4′E) and a northern population (N) from Shenyang city (41°48′N, 123°23′E) of the cabbage beetle, Colaphellus bowringi vary greatly in their life-history traits, and may serve as an excellent model with which to study the inheritance of life-history traits. In the present study, we performed intraspecific hybridization using the two populations, comparing the key life-history traits (fecundity, development time, body weight, growth rate, and sexual size dimorphism (SDD)) between the two populations (S♀ × S♂ and N♀ × N♂) and their two hybrid populations (S♀ × N♂ and N♀ × S♂ populations) at 19, 22, 25, and 28°C. Our results showed that there were significant differences in life-history traits between the two parental populations, with the S population having a significantly higher fecundity, shorter larval development time, larger body weight, higher growth rate, and greater weight loss during metamorphosis ...

Let us learn this fruit from its scientific roots; answering that question is very difficult. Botanically, the fruit is a member of the Meliaceae family, which is in the cucumacea group of plants. This is a large group of plants with thousands of species, but all of them belong to the same family. Meliaceae is the family that includes cucumbers, melons, cabbage, tomatoes and many others. In botany, Meliaceae is the subfamily.. The fruit belongs to a larger subfamily called Meliaceae. Its scientific name is cucurbita. It is widely cultivated worldwide and is mostly eaten raw. The Meliaceae family also includes cucumbers and limes. All the fruits that belong to the Meliaceae family have one thing in common, they are all fruits. It has been found that almost all of the fruits of this family are fruits, even if they have various shapes and sizes.. The other members of the Meliaceae family are gourds, pumpkins, gourds, squash, cantaloupes, gourds, coconuts, mangoes, and pears. Each fruit is a fruit ...

Itaipu goes beyond the reforestation of previously existing woodlands around the lake. The power plant also produces the seedlings to be planted.. Of the 23 million seedlings already planted on the lakes protection strip, 14 million came from the three forest nurseries operated by the company in the cities of Foz do Iguaçu, Santa Helena and Guaíra.. Today, the two Foz do Iguaçu and Santa Helena nurseries work in collaboration with the Western Paraná State University (Universidade Estadual do Oeste do Paraná - Unioeste).. Itaipu nurseries develop seedlings of 75 native tree species, especially peroba (Aspidosperma polyneuron), lapacho (Tabebuia. avellanedae), cedar (Cedrela fissilis), pau-marfim (Balfourodendron riedelianum) and yellow poinciana (Peltophorum dubium).. A program developed by Itaipu to prevent incest among trees allows the company to produce high-quality seeds characterized by what scientists call high degree of genetic variability.. These seeds are the result of ...

rainforest - Tropical Seasonal Forests, or Monsoon Forests - Tropical seasonal forests receive high amounts of annual rainfall distributed unevenly throughout the year. Monsoons of the Indian Ocean region characteristically create climatic situations of heavy and continual rainfall during spring and summer, followed by a distinct dry season in fall and winter. The canopy of a monsoon rainforest is not as dense as that of an equatorial rainforest, but the lower levels are more heavily vegetated. In some regions, many of the trees…

Human impacts have seriously damaged mangroves, and conservation of mangroves will require information on local and regional population genetic structures. Here, we report the development and polymorphism of eleven novel microsatellite markers, developed using next-generation sequencing on 56 samples of widespread mangrove species Xylocarpus granatum (Meliaceae) from nine populations across the Indo-West Pacific region. All loci were found to be polymorphic, with the number of alleles per locus ranging from four to 19. In a population from Sabah (Malaysia), the mean observed and expected heterozygosity per locus was 0.59 and 0.58, respectively. No null allele, significant linkage disequilibrium or deviation from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium was detected among all loci. The eleven markers developed can be valuable tools to conservation genetics of this species across its distributional range. © 2013 Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht ...

The time-space evolution of the El Nino-Southern Oscillation in sea surface temperature (SST) and heat storage of the upper 400 m (HS400) for the Pacific, Indian, and Atlantic Oceans is investigated for 13 years (1979-1991). EOF and rotated EOF (Varimax or VRX) analyses are performed using the time series of normalized anomalies for each ocean separately and then for the global ocean. In the Pacific and Indian Oceans, the two dominant EOF modes for both SST and HS400 are associated with ENSO. For SST they account for 49% of the total variance in each ocean, while for HS400 they account for over 35% of the total variance in each ocean. In the Pacific Ocean, the first EOF modes for SST and HS400 display peak values during spring-summer of 1983 and 1987. They are characterized by maximum positive loadings (or warmer temperature) in the eastern and central Pacific Ocean straddling the equator. These modes represent the peak phase of El Nino off the west coast of South America. The second modes for ...
Many remote and local climate variabilities influence Antarctic sea ice at different time scales. The strongest sea ice teleconnection at the interannual time scale was found between El Nino-Southern Oscillation (ENSO) events and a high latitude climate mode named the Antarctic Dipole. The Antarctic Dipole is characterized by an out-of-phase relationship between sea ice and surface temperature anomalies in the South Pacific and South Atlantic, manifesting itself and persisting 3-4 seasons after being triggered by the ENSO forcing. This study examines the life cycles of ENSO warm and cold events in the tropics and associated evolution of the ADP in high latitudes of the Southern Hemisphere. In evaluating the mechanisms that form the ADP, the study suggests a synthesized scheme that links these high latitude processes with ENSO teleconnection in both the Pacific and Atlantic basins. The synthesized scheme suggests that the two main mechanisms responsible for the formation/maintenance of the ...

The ratio of these two oxygen isotopes has changed over the ages and these. Other factors which work in conjunction with the Earths orbital changes include.
Abstract: Few long and well-dated summer precipitation reconstructions that extend beyond the longest records of instrumental measurements exist in Europe. Further understanding of the past trends in summer precipitation and the mechanisms driving that variability are necessary to improve the predictions of climate models. Tree rings are unique in their ability to provide high-resolution, absolutely dated climate signals for the study of palaeoclimatology. The physiological processes controlling oxygen isotope composition (δ18O) in wood are reasonably well understood highlighting its potential as a climate proxy in a variety of environments. Significant correlation between wood δ18O and precipitation has been demonstrated worldwide reflecting both direct rainout processes and indirectly evaporative enrichment. We present an annually resolved reconstruction of precipitation based upon oxygen isotope variations in tree ring cellulose covering the most recent ˜400 years for England. The ...
