Kodur, Venkatesh K.R.; MacKinnon, David H. (2000). Design of Concrete-Filled Hollow Structural Steel Columns for Fire Endurance, Engineering Journal, American Institute of Steel Construction, Vol. 37, pp. 13-24. The benefits of steel hollow structural sections (HSS) from an aesthetic and structural point of view have long been recognized by architects and engineers in Canada, and more recently in the United States. However, when building codes require structural fire protection, the cost of providing such protection can be expensive for exposed members. Filling an HSS column with concrete not only improves the capacity of the member through composite action at ambient temperatures but also provides fire endurance periods of up to 3 hours depending on the load level, section size, concrete strength and reinforcing characteristics. Physical tests and parametric studies recently completed at the National Fire Laboratory in Ottawa have resulted in design equations which predict the load carrying ...

2 Molecular Biophysics and Physiology, Rush University, Chicago, IL The traditional pedagogical paradigm for instruction provides the student with information and then tests to see if the student has acquired or can apply that information. Constructivism asserts that we build knowledge on an existing framework and that conceptual change occurs when the learner tests an existing mental model. Hence a more appropriate pedagogy may be one that encourages the student to make predictions based on existing mental models before presenting new information. We have developed a series of interactive computer-based tutorials that illustrates a pedagogy based on this process of recognizing, testing and refining mental models. The exercises focus on core concepts in physiology. Students engage in a dialog in which they are presented with a situation and asked to make a prediction. The follow-up response addresses that prediction and, in many cases, the implications of the prediction relative to the problem ...
Hey guys, I`m sorry if this is the wrong section, no coder here. My company uses an intranet but we have a major issue - it`s very content rich with a lot of jargon inside that there is no way for you to understand unless the tutorial has been passed. However, most employees only scan through it and then start exploring which is something we don`t want. My concrete question is: how can we put restrictions on the sections so that only when you have clicked on link x, waited 10 seconds, and

The key conceptual move, as a biology student, is to be able to see how this system enables the cell (which of course doesnt have any consciousness or intention) to control its passage through the cell cycle every time it needs to divide. A new daughter cell will have very low cyclin levels, which includes the level of the cyclin weve been focused on, cyclin B. As the cell grows and it moves through G1, S, and G2, its level of cyclin B will rise. At a certain concentration of cyclin B, enough MPF is formed to enable to cell to enter M phase. But just at the same moment that the machinery for mitosis and cytokinesis is put into place, cyclin disintegrates. As a result, when the new daughter cells begin their independent existence, cyclin levels are once again very low…setting the stage for another cell cycle.. Note that in addition to these internal signals, external signals also influence cell division. For example, PDGF (platelet derived growth factor) stimulates a variety of cells to ...

Optimal control strategies for controlling seasonal influenza transmission in the US are of high interest, because of the significant epidemiological and economic burden of influenza. To evaluate optimal strategies of vaccination and social distancing, we used an age-structured dynamic model of seasonal influenza. We applied optimal control theory to identify the best way of reducing morbidity and mortality at a minimal cost. In combination with the Pontryagins maximum principle, we calculated time-dependent optimal policies of vaccination and social distancing to minimize the epidemiological and economic burden associated with seasonal influenza. We computed optimal age-specific intervention strategies and analyze them under various costs of interventions and disease transmissibility. Our results show that combined strategies have a stronger impact on the reduction of the final epidemic size. Our results also suggest that the optimal vaccination can be achieved by allocating most vaccines to ...

The United States continues to consider Taiwan a transit point for drugs affecting the United States due to its geographic location relative to the Golden Triangle and its role as a regional transportation/shipping hub. The United Nations in 1996, however, removed Taiwan from its list of major drug transit areas, and Taiwan authorities question U.S. Government claims that the island is a transit point for heroin significantly affecting the United States. There is no dispute, however, that individuals from Taiwan continue to be involved in international narcotics trafficking. Taiwans own on-going aggressive domestic counternarcotics program in 1997 resulted in statistical increases in seizures, prosecutions, and percentage of population incarcerated for drug-related offenses in Taiwan. These figures do, however, remain below those of 1993, which was the peak year. Taiwan cannot be a signatory to the 1988 UN Drug Convention because it is not a U.N. member. Taiwan authorities are nonetheless ...

Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians, also called perinatologists, are obstetricians who specialize in the diagnosis, treatment, and ongoing care of expectant mothers and their unborn babies, who may be at high risk for special health problems.. Referral to a Maternal-Fetal Medicine specialist should not cause undue alarm for expectant mothers. It does not necessarily mean the pregnancy will be a difficult one. Nor does it mean the baby will have health problems. Most often, it is simply a precautionary measure designed to protect both mother and a baby, while putting the expectant parents minds at ease.. Services provided by Maternal-Fetal Medicine physicians include maternal and fetal medicine care, monitoring, ultrasound examinations, genetic testing, state-of-the-art diagnostic tests, tests for fetal well-being and more.. As the due date approaches, the Maternal-Fetal Medicine physician remains in close contact with the obstetrician who will deliver the baby and, if needed, the neonatologist ...

Eminent domain has become what the founding fathers sought to prevent: a tool that takes from the poor and the politically weak to give to the rich and politically powerful, concludes Dr. Mindy Fullilove in her report titled, Eminent Domain & African Americans: What is the Price of the Commons?. Eminent Domain & African Americans is the first in a series of independently authored reports published by the Institute for Justice, Perspectives on Eminent Domain Abuse, which examine the different aspects of eminent domain abuse from the vantage point of noted national experts.. In this study, Dr. Fullilove, a research psychiatrist at the New York State Psychiatric Institute and a professor of clinical psychiatry and public health at Columbia University, examines the effects of eminent domain abuse on the African American community. Focusing specifically on the Federal Housing Act (FHA) of 1949, Dr. Fullilove finds that [b]etween 1949 and 1973 … 2,532 projects were carried out in 992 cities that ...
Research has suggested that the following therapies may help, but further evidence is needed to confirm their safety and effectiveness.. Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR): Recalling the event while making a specific kind of side-to-side eye movement may help lower distress levels for people with PTSD. This allows the individual to have more positive emotions, behaviors, and thoughts.. MDMA: The pharmaceutical version of the recreational drug, ecstasy, may help people learn to deal with their memories more effectively by encouraging a feeling of safety. Scientists are currently researching this option.. Cortisone hormone therapy: One study has suggested that high-dose cortisol-based treatments could help reduce the risk of PTSD, if given soon after a trauma occurs.. Computer games: Playing some computer games has been linked with fewer symptoms in some veterans with PTSD, according to a study published in 2017. However, the researchers do not recommend using computer games ...

Inflammatory lung diseases cause a significant amount of morbidity and mortality. However, the mechanisms that control the initiation and resolution of pulmonary inflammatory responses have not been well-elucidated. Histopathological data suggests that the lung responds with a similar pattern of inflammation to diverse range of injurious stimuli. In order to investigate the immunopathogenesis of lung inflammation, a series of in vivo models of lung inflammation were generated in CBAlJ and CD-I mice by respiratory reovirus IlL infection. Using this approach, it was observed in CBAlJ mice that a relatively low titer of reovirus IlL induced a pattern of intraluminal fibrosis in the bronchoalveolar compartment of the lung that is characteristic of the disorder bronchiolitis obliterans organizing pneumonia (BOOP). When higher titers of reovirus IlL were used to inoculate CBA/J mice, most animals developed acute respiratory distress syndrome CARDS), which is characterized by widespread vascular ...

Background: Intravascular clotting and low viscosity of the blood are two extremes of blood pathology that can result in serious consequences threatening the patients life. Medical conditions that trigger blood clotting need to be dealt with so as not to end into the serious complication of this disorder. Replaced heart valve is a treatment that activates the coagulation pathway. Anticoagulation therapy becomes a necessity in these patients. In spite of the beneficial effect of warfarin as a blood anticoagulant drug, high anticoagulation may lead to bleeding and low anticoagulation may lead to thrombosis in these patients. Therefore, the drug must be kept under tight control because it has a narrow therapeutic range. The successful management policy of a patient on anticoagulation therapy is essentially a team work including the combined activities of the medical personnel in charge and the patient him/herself. The patient can be involved through education by implementing a structured ...
The endocrine system is particularly important in the management of stress, but the functioning of the endocrine system and well-being have been scarcely investigated in relation to meditation.. Researchers at Queens University Belfast in Northern Ireland and Victoria University in Melbourne, Australia reviewed a large number of previous studies and analyzed how meditation impacted a number of hormones related to stress.. The study, published in the journal Cell Press, found a connection between meditation, the endocrine system, and health and wellbeing.. Queens School of Nursing and Midwifery Cardiovascular Health Reader and study author Dr. Chantal Ski said: Through the comprehensive literature review, we found that there is a clear link between meditation and stress reduction.. We focused on studies that analyzed how meditation affected the endocrine system and a number of interconnected systems that regulate stress, such as the Hypothalamic-Pituitary-Adrenal (HPA) axis, the ...

What students most liked about the SNAB AS course was the topic-based approach and discussion of topical issues, the interactive tutorials, and not having to do too much biochemistry at the start.. In the A2 they particularly liked the forensics topic, especially the forensic entomology bit.. Big changes are the setting of work in everyday contexts, and the excellent use of interactive and explanative IT. Were finding the course less didactic than what we were doing before. More stress, but thats because its new.. The greatest challenge has been Time! Theres new biology to learn, and we have to get to grips with the level of knowledge required. Also, we are finding the coursework diffficult to do well in 2000 words. [This is now under discussion for following years.]. Winter can be depressing for many but as I sit in my office on this gloomy, rainy, winter day, I am filled with hope and optimism. After a long and parched year, the rains are a welcome sight. According to the Oklahoma Climatological Survey, 2011 has been the 6th driest year since 1921. Last winter, our rains didnt really come and that trend continued on into spring. Generally, summer is very dry in Okla-homa but this year was even drier than normal and the ex-cessive heat only exacerbated the drought. This summer was the warmest summer on record with nearly 100 days above 100°F. Only since this last October have we returned to normal or above normal precipitation and temperatures. 2005-02-24) - After the recent discovery of two ancient crocodile skulls which closely resemble modern crocodiles despite 40 million years of evolution, the National Science Foundation (NSF) today issued a grant of $56 million to fund the new No Croc Left Behind (NCLB) program.. The program, administered by the American Institute of Biological Science (AIBS) is designed to end the soft bigotry of low expectations which has kept crocodiles mired in the backwaters of evolutionary progress for tens of millions of years.. Genetic scientists at AIBS will attempt to aggressively hyper-evolve the modern crocodile to bring it more in line with Darwinian expectations.. Were designing some random mutations to improve the crocodiles survivability, said an unnamed AIBS scientist, Future croc features might include a retractable periscope, a gas-powered outboard motor and perhaps skin thats unfit for making shoes and purses. Of course, taxonomically, it will still be a crocodile…but were ...

Others just try to eat healthy and make good choices while enjoying a cheeseburger or glass of wine from time to time.. New American Plate from the AICR. When asked what diet changes they had made after being diagnosed with LFS, members of our support groups answers were as diverse as their cancers. Some swear by the success with certain diets, others had failures with those same diets. There were several themes that continued to pop up.. MODERATION- Another saying we hear a lot is everything in moderation. I had a doctor tell me once- everything in moderation, even moderation. What is moderation?
