When you have the scientific name of a plant, you should easily find information on it with internet search engines, such as google.com. Posidonia oceanica or neptunegrass is a type of seagrass. It is an important native flowering plant forming vast underwater meadows in the Mediterranean Sea. It provides habitat, oxygen, and food for many other organisms. It can grow at a water depth of up to 40 meters. It is endangered by pollution, construction, drag netting, and an introduced algae, Caulerpa taxifolia. Neptunegrass has rhizomes, roots, ribbonlike leaves up to 1.5 meters long, and ball-like fruit. Its fruit and leaves often wash up on beaches. The fruit have air spaces allowing them to float. Invasive tropical seaweed (Caulerpa taxifolia) in the Mediterranean Sea. This seaweed is native to the Caribbean. Hybrids were developed in Europe in the 1970s for use in marine aquariums. Accidental release into the wild, by the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco, introduced this species into the Mediterranean Sea. It has now colonised much of the Mediterranean as well as posing a threat to the coast of California, where it grows to a massive size in comparison to its parent plant. Apart from its rapid growth rate, its high toxicity stops its being a food source for marine wildlife. - Stock Image B312/0065
Associações entre o isolamento de Candida albicans com a infecção pelo vírus da leucemia felina (FeLV), tratamentos com corticosteróides ou antimicrobianos em gatos
Call me a nerd, but I have to admit that I am pretty excited about metabolomic technology. Uh, what? Metabolomics is the study of the chemical fingerprints that cells leave behind. It does not look at genes, DNA, RNA or proteins, but is a peek into the products or metabolites that result from all this genetic orchestration. It is a physiological snapshot of a living cell.. This past week, we published a study that applies metabolomics to male infertility. If you have been reading this column, you are well aware of my interest in helping sterile men become fathers. Over the last decade, it has become clear that many men with azoospermia (no ejaculated sperm) may have small pockets of sperm in the testicle. The question is how to safely find that sperm without causing undo harm to the testicle. Current methods for evaluating whether sperm are present include somewhat invasive techniques such as testicular biopsy and microdissection and less invasive ones such as FNA Sperm Mapping that I invented ...
Candida species are commensally microorganisms in healthy individuals, but is also the most opportunistic fungal pathogen of human. From benign skin-mucosal forms to invasive ones, Candida infection, can compromise various organs systematic and cause diseases in immunocompromised or critically ill patients.

The maximum size and age that clonal organisms can reach remains poorly known, although we do know that the largest natural clones can extend over hundreds or thousands of metres and potentially live for centuries. We made a review of findings to date, which reveal that the maximum clone age and size estimates reported in the literature are typically limited by the scale of sampling, and may grossly underestimate the maximum age and size of clonal organisms. A case study presented here shows the occurrence of clones of slow-growing marine angiosperm Posidonia oceanica at spatial scales ranging from metres to hundreds of kilometres, using microsatellites on 1544 sampling units from a total of 40 locations across the Mediterranean Sea. This analysis revealed the presence, with a prevalence of 3.5 to 8.9%, of very large clones spreading over one to several (up to 15) kilometres at the different locations. Using estimates from field studies and models of the clonal growth of P. oceanica, we estimated these

Carrageenans are water-soluble natural gums/ which occur in certain species of seaweeds. They are sulfated natural biopolymers made up of galactose units. The major varieties of seaweeds are available from South China Sea at Sabah are Caulerpa, Ulva, Sargassum, Eucheuma, Gracilaria, Gelidiella and Kappaphycus. The thermal extraction of i-carrageenan from seaweed does not give high yield and time consuming. Ultrasonic assisted extraction was proposed as an alternative method. The 20 kHz high intensity ultrasound was used in the extraction of i-Carrageenan from Eucheum denticulatum by using water as solvent. i-carrageenan yield increased from 50 to 57.2%. A simple mathematical correlation for the estimation of the solid-liquid mass transfer coefficient was derived in terms of operating conditions VIZ, amplitude, particle size and temperature for ultrasonic extraction of i-Carrageenan. The diffusion coefficient of i-Carrageenan in water was estimated from the mass transfer coefficient. Further more ...

With this aim, the density of Paracentrotus lividus was estimated at six different locations around the Gulf of Alghero (Northwestern Sardinia, Italy). At each location, two areas were considered and within each area the number of P. lividus individuals was counted in 10 plots of dimensions 1 × 1 m each. The abundance of P. lividus and Sarpa salpa grazing marks was estimated on two shoots harvested at random in each plot. The number of P. lividus individuals varied greatly among the locations and between areas within each location. A sigmoid function was found to better describe the relation between P. lividus density and the number of its grazing marks. The distance class-frequency distribution of P. lividus grazing marks from the leaf base showed that this herbivore affected the length of the Posidonia oceanica leaf for about 700 mm, and that the attacks were concentrated at the lower portion of the leaf near the base. Conversely, a larger number of the S. salpa grazing bites were more ...
eng] The usefulness of vertical rhizome growth as an early indicator of fish farm impacts to Posidonia oceanica meadows was tested by comparing annual estimates of vertical rhizome growth, quantified retrospectively, at distances ranging between 5 and 1200 m from fish cages at four Mediterranean locations (Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Spain). The studied fish farms had been operating since, at least, 1997, producing between 150 and 1150 tons yr−1 of sea bream (Sparus aurata) and sea bass (Dicentrachus labrax), and, at Italy, also sharpsnout sea bream (Diplodus puntazzo). The reconstructed vertical rhizome growth spanned from 19 to 25 years of growth, depending on sites, and the average vertical rhizome growth before the onset of fish farm operations ranged between 4.48 and 8.79 mm yr−1. The vertical rhizome growth after the onset of farming activities declined significantly (t-test, P , 0.05) from the control station (at ,800 m from the farm; vertical growth rate averaged 6.79, 5.52, 3.89 and ...

Purpose: Mild induced hypothermia (MIH) has been shown to improve both survival and neurological outcome in comatose sudden cardiac arrest (SCA)-survivors. MIH has to be applied very early to be effective. Surface cooling methods seem to be inferior to invasive ones regarding cooling efficacy. In this study we compared both cooling methods for temperature management, hypothermia-associated complications and outcome in SCA-survivors.. Methods: In total, 179 adult ICU patients with an indication for MIH were prospectively enrolled between May 2006 and August 2009. Hypothermia was induced with either invasive or non-invasive cooling. Core body temperature was operated at 33.0°C over a period of 24 hours. Temperature decline and maintenance as well as cooling-associated complications were measured. Neurological status was evaluated at hospital discharge using the Pittsburgh Cerebral Performance Category (CPC).. Results: One hundred twenty-one patients were cooled with invasive (119 Coolgard, 2 ...
Temperature is one of the vital signs usually monitored in patients of ICUs. Indeed, fever occurs frequently in ICU especially in brain injured patients and may require targeted temperature management (TTM) in special case as intracranial hypertension or post cardiac arrest. In ICU, non invasive device to monitor temperature are not recommended and only invasive ones are accurate enough for TTM. Arterial pulmonary temperature is still the gold standard, but esophageal device is currently used in ICU patients.. The goal of this study is to compare accuracy of a continuous noninvasive cutaneous temperature using zero-heat-flux (ZHF) method to esophageal temperature, arterial temperature and intracerebral temperature if present for clinical monitoring.. All adults patients admitted in the neurosurgical or surgical ICU are eligible for inclusion into this study.. Assessment of temperature will be continuously monitored by esophageal probe (MON-A-THERM, 12Fr, COVIDIEN, Dublin, Ireland) (Teso), ZHF ...

This book deals with the ecological effect a species can have when it moves into an environment that it has not previously occupied (commonly referred to as an `Invasion). It is unique in presenting a clear and accessible introduction to a highly complex area - the modelling of biological invasions. The book presents the latest theories and models developed from studies into this crucial area.
We review the cytological mechanisms underlying asexual reproduction, i.e. reproduction without fertilization, in animals. Asexuality or parthenogenesis has evolved many times and the cytological mechanisms to restore the parental chromosome number can vary between and even within species. In automictic or meiotic parthenogenesis, meiosis takes place but the chromosomal constitution of the mother is restored through one or several different mechanisms. Some of these mechanisms enforce homozygosity at all loci while some other mechanisms pass the genome of the mother intact to the offspring. In apomictic or mitotic parthenogenesis the eggs are formed through what is essentially a set of mitoses. Polyploidy, is in general incompatible with chromosomal sex determination and is a rare condition in animals. However, many asexual and hermaphroditic forms are polyploid to various degrees. Polyploidy is divided into allo- and autopolyploidy. In the former mode the chromosome sets are derived from two or ...

Temporal variability in species composition and abundance may enhance coexistence in ecological communities, especially when subjected to strong seasonal patterns. Species distribution through time may be related to many factors, such as changes in the structure and functioning of preferred habitats, variations in ecological interactions or asynchronous patterns in species life cycles. Here, data from a one-year survey of amphipod assemblages from a nearly undisturbed Posidonia oceanica meadow are used to investigate the seasonal patterns in species abundance and identity. Our results highlight the presence of a core group of species inhabiting the meadow throughout the year, although an in depth analysis reveals three differentiated seasonal assemblages corresponding to autumn, winter, and a warm season clustering of both spring and summer. The observed patterns suggest the interplay between different mechanisms drives the coexistence of amphipods over the whole year, including niche partitioning,

In the Mediterranean Sea, Posidonia oceanica meadows produce a huge amount of detritus, evaluated up to 300 to 2000 g dry wt m-2 yr-1. This litter is mainly composed of dead leaves but also of uprooted P.oceanica shoots and drift macro-algae from adjacent rocky bottoms. Although rich in refractory materials (lignin) and poor in P and N, these underwater accumulations of leaves are colonised by fungi, micro-algae (like diatoms), bacteria, but also by micro and macrofauna assemblages. These organisms could play an important role in leaf litter degradation and enrichment, but also in energy and carbon transfer from P.oceanica to higher trophic levels in adjacent coastal ecosystems. In this study we focus on the vagile macro-fauna (invertebrates with a size ...
A superficial bladder cancer is a noninvasive cancer that is presented as a good prognosis after receiving treatment, and noninvasive. However, about 20∼50% of superficial bladder cancer patients progressed to invasive tumor which represent the poor survival rates within 5 years. In previous study, we addressed if the transcriptional characteristics of the superficial bladder cancer could be used as predictive biomarkers for the progression of superficial tumors to invasive ones. Using gene expression data from 165 bladder cancer patients, we identified a gene expression signature that could predict the likelihood of progression to invasive tumors. Gene network analyses of the signature revealed that E2F1 and its downstream effectors EZH2 and SUZ12 could be important mediators for the invasive and metastatic progression of superficial tumors. In this study, we investigated how these genes may affect the invasive and metastatic progression of superficial tumors. We investigated the invasive ...
The Anthropocene Epoch is characterized by novel and increasingly complex dependencies between the environment and human civilization, with many challenges of biodiversity management emerging as wicked problems. Problems arising from the management of biological invasions can be either tame (with simple or obvious solutions) or wicked, where difficulty in appropriately defining the problem can make complete solutions impossible to find. We review four case studies that reflect the main goals in the management of biological invasions - prevention, eradication, and impact reduction - assessing the drivers and extent of wickedness in each. We find that a disconnect between the perception and reality of how wicked a problem is can profoundly influence the likelihood of successful management. For example, managing species introductions can be wicked, but shifting from species-focused to vector-focused risk management can greatly reduce the complexity, making it a tame problem. The scope and scale of the
Posidonia oceanica, an endemic seagrass of the Mediterranean Sea harbors a high diversity of N2-fixing prokaryotes. One of these is Halothece sp., a unicellular N2-fixing cyanobacteria detected through nifH analysis from the epiphytes of P. oceanica. The most related strain in culture is Halothece sp. PCC 7418 and this was used as the test organism in this study. In the Mediterranean Sea, phosphorus (P) and iron (Fe) can be the major limiting nutrients for N2 fixation. However, information about the mechanisms of P-acquisition and the role of metals (i.e., Fe) in these processes for N2-fixing bacteria is scarce. From our genomic analyses of the test organism and other phylogenetically related N2-fixing strains, Halothece sp. PCC 7418 is one of the strains with the greatest number of gene copies (eight copies) of alkaline phosphatases (APases). Our structural analysis of PhoD (alkaline phosphatase type D) and PhoU (phosphate acquisition regulator) of Halothece sp. PCC 7418 showed the connection among
Phylogenetic relationships in Athyrium and Cornopteris were deduced from two chloroplast DNA fragments, rbcL and trnL 5exon-trnF, of 32 species, 2 varieties, 3 putative hybrids of Athyrium, three taxa of Cornopteris, and five outgroups. Athyrium is paraphyletic, and the Athyrium-Cornopteris complex comprises five clades. Clade I, the most basal, comprises A. niponicum, A. (=Anisocampium) sheareri, and A. (=Kuniwatsukia) cuspidatum. Clade II includes A. distentifolium and Cornopteris. All species of clades III and IV are diploids, while most species of Glade V are polyploids. The parentage of the putative hybrids and of species of hybrid origin were also suggested. The results were compared to previous major classifications based on morphology.. ...

Petadolex, a patented form of butterbur extracted from the root and standardized to contain a minimum of 15% petasin and isopetasin, has been studied for healthy cranial vessel support. Petasin-containing extracts of butterbur may also help to maintain healthy histamine and cytokine release. In one clinical trial with 60 participants, Petadolex showed the potential to support cranial vessel comfort and was well tolerated. After a twelve-week period, almost eighty percent of participants supplementing with Petadolex indicated a supportive effect. In part, the mechanism for this action may involve a supportive spasmolytic effect on smooth muscle in cranial blood vessels. A second study with 229 individuals

Walts humiliation is only matched by his horror as Hank is murdered by a force Walt set in motion but failed to control. The series should have ended there, with Walt suffering the full consequences of his actions.. The finale episode was great TV: brilliantly acted, well shot, and fun to watch, but it fell short of the moral vision that Vince Gilligan promised us. The ending felt like a sop to the Team Walt fanboys who tuned in each week to watch Heisenberg be a badass, morality be damned.. Sure, it felt good to watch Walts homemade machine gun turret mow down unsuspecting Nazis in Uncle Jacks living room. But the final episode did not give us the moral clarity that Vince Gilligan had been promising. The last two episodes, Ozymandias and Felina, felt like rush jobs to rehabilitate ...
