Norfloxacin was treated with the weak cation exchange resins which form the drug resin complex called resinate. The loading process was optimized for the pH of loading solution and the drug resin ratio. The resinates were evaluated for bulk density, angle of repose, taste masking, and in vitro drug release. Taste evaluation of the drug resinates showed complete masking of the bitterness of the drug. In vitro drug release studies revealed that more than 90% of the drug was released within 20 min from the drug resinates. Sweet palatable aqueous suspension of norfloxacin was formulated successfully with drug-resin complex and it was found to be stable.

Natural tannins have a high affinity to absorb metal ions, proteins and some other biomolecules. In this study, tannins extracted from Terminalia arjuna (Kumbuk) were used to synthesise renewable tannin-phenol-formaldehyde resin systems and a porous modified resin system. A series of resin systems was synthesised by varying the incorporated phenol content. The ion exchange capacities of the resins produced were studied and the resin with the highest ion exchange capacity was selected. It was sulfonated to increase the properties further. The characterization was made based on iodide and bromide ion-isotopic exchange reaction kinetic data obtained for the two resins. It was observed that during iodide ion-isotopic exchange reaction performed at 35.0 °C, 1.000 g of ion exchange resins and 0.002 mol/L labeled iodide ion solution, the values of specific reaction rate (min-1), amount of ion exchanged (mmol), initial rate of ion exchange (mmol/min) and log Kd were 0.379, 0.426, 0.161 and 16.2 respectively for Dowex-SBR LC resin, which was higher than the respective values of 0.156, 0.243, 0.038 and 13.4 as that obtained by using Indion-454 resins. A second-generation flame spectrometer for the direct determination of phosphorus in water was evaluated. Response to phosphorus in the form of phosphoric acid was linear from 0.5 to 16 ppm phosphorus. The relative standard deviation was approximately constant at 20 percent over the range. River water and municipal sewage effluent were analyzed after the addition of phosphoric acid (1.8 ppm P) and filtration through a series of microporous membranes. Recovery of the added phosphorus averaged 70 percent for the river water and 95 percent for the sewage effluent after treatment with cation exchange resin. There was no clear relation to filter pore size in the range 5 to 0.2 micrometers. Analyses of the higher range EPA Nutrient Reference Samples (approximately 0.5 ppm P) agreed within one standard deviation with the reference values, both for inorganic and total phosphorus. Various types of ions can dissolve and accumulate in process water depending on ore mineralogy, reagent scheme, grinding medium and chemistry of mine site water. Sulfur-based ions (sulfate, thiosulfate, polythionate) are generally observed in flotation of sulfide ores. High concentrations of these ions may reduce efficiency of the flotation process, causing scale problems. Removal of these ions from process water often requires complex water treatment plants with high capital and operating costs. In this study, partial cleaning of water was investigated as an alternative approach for decreasing high sulphate concentrations of 3000–3800 mg/L down to 1000–1500 mg/L, an acceptable concentration for most sulfide ore flotation plants, by using an ion-exchange resin.
