Identification of different HPV subtypes in unidentified communities provides sufficient information for screening and monitoring potential impact of a vaccination program. Therefore, the aim of this study was to screen for the presence of HPVs subtypes 31,33,35,39 and 45 among Yemeni women with Cervical Cancer. A total of 200 (150 malignant and 50 benign) tissue samples were obtained from Yemeni women with cervical cancer, were investigated for the presence of HPV subtypes 31,33,35,39 and 45 by Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR). Of the 150 cervical cancer tissue specimens, HPV 31, HPV 33, HPV35, HPV 39 and HPV45 were identified in 10/150 (6.7 %), 6/150 (4 %), 6/150 (4 %), 5/150 (3.3 %) and 10/150 (6.7 %), respectively. The frequency of these HPV subtypes among Yemeni women with cervical cancer was 24 %. Conclusion: HPV 31, HPV 33, HPV35, HPV 39 and HPV45 were prevalent among Yemeni women with cervical cancer.

Explosive Hazards in Yemen. Landmines, Unexploded Ordnance (UXO), and IEDs have plagued Yemen for decades, indiscriminately killing civilians and hindering economic development. Prior to the current conflict, Yemen was only a few years away from clearing its last remaining landmines. However, the Houthi insurgency and Yemeni Civil War quickly erased this progress, and Iran-backed Houthi forces laid over one million landmines and IEDs across the country. These explosive hazards threaten the lives and livelihoods of local communities, block access to infrastructure and basic services, and hinder the delivery of humanitarian assistance to millions of civilians battling food insecurity.. As part of the United States broader Yemen strategy, the State Department works closely with a wide range of Yemeni stakeholders, international organizations, and non-governmental organizations (NGO) to clear landmines, IEDs, and other ERW that threaten civilians. In addition to providing landmine survivors with ...

As Yemen becomes the new front in the war on terror, its leaders want this to be clear: It does not intend to become another Iraq or Afghanistan with thousands of US troops on the ground. Yemeni Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi drew some red lines on Wednesday in its burgeoning alliance with Washington against al-Qaeda, saying that Yemen welcomes US and foreign troops for training, intelligence and logistical support.
The flow of U.S. and U.K. arms to the Saudi-led coalition fighting Shiite rebels in Yemen has resulted in enormous harm to Yemeni civilians over the course of the conflict, an international rights watchdog said Friday as the stalemated war is about to enter its third year.
As a nascent democracy, Yemen still lacks the culture of understanding and respect necessary for a stable transfer of power, writes Ibad Mohammad al-Anassi. That said, he argues that the Yemeni Parliaments vote to grant former President Ali Abdullah Saleh and his inner circle legal immunity is a step towards fostering a culture of democracy.

And after all the US blood and money spent, who actually won in Iraq?!?. Folks, read em and weep; it is China and Russia; NOT the USA.. Iraq, China launch oil for reconstruction agreement. Americas Failed Strategy in the Middle East: Losing Iraq and the Gulf. This article goes on to state: More broadly, the United States has steadily lost the confidence of its Arab strategic partners in the Gulf region. The United States ignored their advice during the invasion in 2003 - making Iran the dominant military power in the northern Gulf while also turning Iraq into a constant source of unstable weaknesses and concern. Beginning with President Obama, the United States has bullied its allies over burden sharing even when they were spending some 10% of their GDP on military forces - raising growing questions about U.S. willingness to main its military role in the Gulf and support the security of its allies. The United States has instead sanctioned and provoked Iran - without effectively deterring it ...

The long struggle against Al Qaeda since the 9/11 attacks has taken many twists and turns. Now it has even led to the forced evacuation of an entire city of 80,000 people - in Yemen, the ancestral home of Osama bin Laden.. The evacuation took place last week when the Yemeni military laid siege to the southern city of Loder in order to flush out a group called Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), which may have 300 to 500 fighters.. The battle, which left dozens killed on both sides, is the latest escalation of a joint effort by the Obama administration and the Yemeni government to rid the country of this dangerous affiliate of Mr. bin Ladens core group in Pakistan.. Webmasters Commentary: Translation: the US public is being softened up for yet another escalating military misadventure, this time in Yemen.. It is very convenient to lump all fighters of despotic regimes (like that of Yemen) under the classification of Al Qaeda. However, thinking people really have to wonder if Al Qaeda ...

Nadir Haider Nasser Al-Shadadi, one of the most wanted leaders of Al-Qaeda, was among those killed, the source continued.. War in Yemen: In a Devastated Country, One City Is Thriving The city of Marib in Yemen was long seen as an al-Qaida stronghold. But as the rest of the war-ravaged country descends ever deeper into chaos, it has become an unofficial capital with booming businesses and a popular university, a place poised between horror and hope. DER SPIEGEL, By Christoph Reuter. This article originally appeared in German in issue 47/2017 November 18th, 2017. Cholera? No, cholera isnt the worst problem here, says the hospital director. The fatal epidemic spreading across Yemen in the last eight months, which has infected around 800,000 people and claimed over 2,000 lives, is only the third or fourth most common cause of death here in Marib, says Dr. Mohammed al-Qubati. Most deaths are caused by landmines.. I think we have to realize that we can push as much money and training as we need to, to try to help the Yemeni government combat them al Qaeda on the Peninsula. But the reality is, unless President Saleh allows these forces to develop, get trained, and be equipped to go into the country to be able to take on some of the tribal regions that are giving free rein to al Qaeda, that were not going to be able to be effective, and whats going to happen is, we will end up in the same awkward position we were in 2002, where well be conducting unilateral operations in order to safeguard our national interest. The next round of peace talks between Yemens government and Iran-backed Houthis rebels scheduled for next week have been postponed, Foreign Minister Abdel Malak al-Mekhlafi said on Saturday.. The negotiations will not take place on the announced date of 14 January, Mekhlafi said on the phone from Cairo.. Most Americans are probably unaware that over the past two weeks the US has launched at least eight drone attacks in Yemen, in which dozens have been killed. It is the largest US escalation of attacks on Yemen in more than a decade. The media has reported that of all those killed in these recent US strikes, only one of the dead was on the terrorist most wanted list ...
Click here for the RTI Rating scoresheet. We are pleased that Yemeni House of Representatives has passed such a strong right to information law, said Toby Mendel, Executive Director of the Centre for Law and Democracy. However, passing this law is just the beginning; the government will have to commit to implementing the law properly, and civil society will need to be active in using it, for real transparency to emerge in Yemen.. The laws strongest features include its broad scope and applicability and its strong promotional regime. At the same time, the law has important weaknesses, including the lack of proper recognition of the human right right to information and the absence of a public interest override.. ...
MSF has been providing emergency care to war-wounded since fighting resumed recently in Saada Province, in northwestern Yemen. Four weeks ago renewed fighting began between the Yemeni army and the Al Houthi rebels in Saada Province. Violent clashes have been frequent, mostly around Saada City, along the Saada-Baqim road, and farther west around Haydan and Malaheed.
These emerging lessons can help inform Yemeni policy makers thinking about local governance and international actors looking to mitigate the impact of conflict.
Background/Aims: Khat is a natural stimulant from the Catha Edulis plant that is cultivated in Yemen and most of East African regions. It is widely used in Yemen as a pass time social habit. Chewing of this cursed plants leaves has been shown to has a direct damaging effect on liver tissue. There are few case reports on the effect of Khat chewing and hepatitis, but this is a retrospective study to investigate this relationship in response to recent case reports from the UK and Australia. Our Aim: was to show the direct relation between the habit of Khat chewing in the region and autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). Methods: This is a retrospective study that analyzed 68 patients who were referred to a tertiary teaching hospital in Sanaa, Yemen, from January 2011 to December 2014 who were diagnosed as an acute autoimmune hepatitis based on serum biochemistry, immunoglobulins, autoantibodies and hepatic viral markers. United Nations officials say Yemen will face the worlds largest famine in decades if the Saudi-led coalition refuses to lift its blockade on deliveries of aid. On Monday, the coalition shut air, land and sea routes into Yemen after Houthi rebels fired a missile that was intercepted near the Saudi capital, Riyadh. Saudi Arabia says its blockade is needed to stop Iran from sending weapons to the rebels. The U.N. says aid agencies were given no prior notice of the Saudi decision to shut down all land, air and seaports in Yemen. The war on Yemen has created the greatest humanitarian crisis in the world today. On November 20, while the President and Congress members prepared for Thanksgiving feasts, San Francisco activists and members of the Yemeni community gathered in front of the citys Federal Building to protest US support for the Saudi-led war on Yemen. Their protest followed a similar action in San Franciscos Union Plaza earlier this month. It was only after activists organized protests that Nancy Pelosi agreed to be a co-sponsor of the bill.
By Danial Hassan. Op-ed. Can anybody treat cancer by just applying some ointments on their body?! The Yemeni government is under constant international advices and pressures to not prosecute the war and rather wait for Houthis to sue for peace. Tumors are excised, the only way to get rid of it. Trying otherwise with Houthis, I swear, is like trying to treat cancer with ointments.. Here are more detailed reasons why the government should not heed the advices for open-ended patience with Houthis until they decide to sue for peace. 1- Houthis are an extremist religious organization that, after the 2014 coup, has established a Zaydi theocratic dynastical rule under Abdulmalik al-Houthi in north Yemen and is now fighting hard to expand towards the government-held south and east. They have been sidestepping peace chances for four years while vowing to keep the fight until the Day of Judgment. In fact, dynastical rule (for prophet Mohammeds descendants, presently al-Houthi) is why the organization ...
Background: The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a DNA tumor virus that causes epithelial proliferation. There are more than 100 HPV subtypes, of which 13 subtypes are regarded as high risk subtypes that can cause cancers of epithelial mucosal surfaces. High risk human papilloma viruses (HR-HPV) subtypes 16 and 18 plays a major role in the etiology of cervical cancer worldwide. Therefore, the aim of this study was to screen for the existence of HPV16 and HPV18 among Yemeni women with cervical lesions. Methodology: Formalin fixed paraffin wax processed tissue blocks were retrieved for 200 patients (150 were previously diagnosed with cervical cancer and the remaining 50 were diagnosed with different benign conditions). Results: Of the 200 cervical cancer tissue specimens, HR-HPV 16 was identified in 74/200 (37%) samples and couldnt be recognized in 126/200(63%) tissue samples. HR-HPV 18 was identified in 32/200 (16%) specimens and couldnt be recognized in 168/200(84%) tissue specimens. Conclusion: HR-HPV

New York) - Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Salehs arrival in the United States for medical treatment highlights the need for international action to serve justice for serious crimes in Yemen, Human Rights Watch said today. Saleh arrived in the US on January 28, 2012, to receive treatment for wounds he suffered during an attack on the presidential palace in Yemen in June.. The issue isnt where Saleh gets medical care, but whether concerned governments are going to prevent him and his aides from getting away with the killings of peaceful protesters, said Sarah Leah Whitson, Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. International leaders should stand by the Yemeni people and insist on prosecutions of those responsible for last years unlawful attacks.. Saleh arrived in the US one week after Yemens Parliament granted him blanket amnesty and granted all those who served with him immunity from prosecution for political crimes apart from terrorist acts. The immunity deal, which was backed by ...

The whole plant, Pergularia daemia (Family: Asclepediaceae), was extracted with 50% alcohol and a fresh batch of the plant material was successively extracted with petroleum ether, ethyl acetate and n-butanol to determine its diuretic activity. The diuretic activity of the different extracts at a dose of 400 mg/Kg was assessed orally in rats with furosemide as a standard drug using Lipschitzs test. All extracts except the petroleum ether extract showed significant increase (p | 0.001) in urine output. Urinary electrolyte excretion was also affected by the extracts: the alcoholic, ethyl acetate and n-butanol extract caused an increase in the urinary excretion of sodium and potassium ions. These findings suggest that among the mentioned extracts, ethanolic has the maximum diuretic activity followed by n-butanol extract.
For the first time baseline respiration and activity were determined simultaneously for 13 specimens of the mangrove crab, Scylla serrata. Experiments were conducted in an intermittent-flow respirometer at 22 • C, ambient salinity S = 30, and low light conditions (red light, 5 W). Permanent measurements of crab activity by an infrared video system (number of movements) and oxygen consumption were coupled, allowing to determine both the routine (ROC) and standard oxygen consumption rate (SOC). The experimental setup allowed the calculation of activity, by recording single movements. Relative ROC values varied between 70 mg O 2 h −1 kg −1 wet mass (WM) for a large (285 g) specimen and 170 mg O 2 h −1 kg −1 WM for a small (37 g) specimen. Activity rates varied between 3216 movements h −1 and five hours without any movement. Mean movement rates were between 14 and 165 h −1 and mean rest rates between 2 and 23 min. Absolute ROC for a standard mass of 50 g was calculated to be 4.72 mg O ...
My father owned guns. He took my sister and I to the closet where his guns were stored, and pulled down the rifle cases, opened them, and showed them to us. He then locked them back up, and put them back up where they belonged on the closet shelf. He said If you ever want to see these guns, or learn how to shoot, just ask. Ill be glad to teach you everything I know about how to be safe and have fun with them. However, if I ever catch wind that you went in here without my permission, Ill kill you myself. We never once even thought of going into his closet. His message was clear ...

Since its founding 2,000 years ago, Sanaa has been a major trading centre for south-eastern Arabia. Once a seat of government for the early Islamic caliphs, it is today the capital city of Yemen. Typical houses in Sanaa rise to as many as nine stories. The lower levels are usually built of stone, and the upper ones of lighter brick. The windows are outlined in white gypsum and have fan lights of alabaster or coloured glass held in gypsum tracery. Because the urban expansion of the 1970s and 1980s had begun to threaten and eventually destroy the old city, in 1984 the Republic of Yemen created the General Organisation for the Preservation of Old Sanaa. By 1987, it extended its responsibilities to all of Yemen and became the General Organisation for the Preservation of the Historic Cities of Yemen (GOPHCY). UNESCO and UNDP assisted the preservation planning process, while technical assistance and funding were provided by the Yemeni government and by Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, North ...

The alliance between the Houthi rebels and former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh seems to be on the verge of a split.. Tension between Saleh and the Houthis has been rising in recent months.. The offer came as clashes between Saleh loyalists and rebel fighters intensified in Sanaa.. I call on our brothers and the Arab coalition to halt their aggression, allow access to medical and relief aid, open airports and we will turn the page, Saleh said in a televised speech.. He added: We will deal with them in a positive way and what happened to Yemen is enough. The country has since fallen into chaos and Mr Saleh later joined the Houthis to drive Mr Hadi out of the capital in 2014.. On Saturday there were reports of further fighting in Sanaa, with explosions and gunfire concentrated in the southern suburb of Hadda where relatives of Mr ...

There has been a significant decrease in the number of airstrikes and violence in the north and some areas in the south, yet we are witnessing another emergency related to the patients with chronic diseases. The country is still under an embargo that hinders the importation of medication, causing patients with chronic diseases nationwide to struggle to find the treatment and medication they need. Many are dying as a result.. Patients with kidney failure are at risk of death as the dialysis treatment centres were badly affected by lack of supplies, due to import restrictions resulting from the embargo. The Yemeni Ministry of health is almost unable to cover the costs alone. Weekly sessions per patient were reduced from three to two. MSF is now supporting dialysis treatment centres in Sanaa, Mahweet, Hajja and recently Taiz but this is temporary support as MSF is focusing on providing life-saving healthcare. We are holding a seminar on 26 July with the aim of urging stakeholders and international ...
