Commonly abbreviated as CSD, Cat Scratch Disease is an infectious disease caused by the bacteria Bartonella henselae. As the name suggests, CSD is often caused by scratches and bites from cats that become infected. An indication of CSD is when the lymph nodes around the neck, heads, and sometimes the upper limbs show signs of swelling. Other symptoms of CSD may include fatigue, fever, headache, and a loss of appetite. In rare instances, complications from CSD may arise such as Parinauds oculolandular syndrome and bacillary angiomatosis. Cats do have the capacity to spread Bartonella henselae to humans. Kittens pose a greater risk than cats and pass the bacterium onto their owners more often than adult cats. At some point in their lifetimes, approximately forty percent of cats become carriers of the Bartonella henselae. Cats who are carriers display no symptoms and will not act sickly. It is impossible to tell whether or not a cat can spread the disease to their owner.. Individuals with weak ...
What is cat scratch disease (CSD)?. Cat Scratch Disease (CSD) is a bacterial infection caused by Bartonella henselae. It is transmitted to cats by flea droppings in a cats fur or claws. The bacteria spreads to people when an infected cat bites or scratches, or licks someones open wound. Young children and people with weak immune systems are the most likely to get CSD. Ticks may also spread Bartonella henselae to cats, but it is not clearly documented that ticks can spread CSD to people.. Does my cat carry this disease?. Not every cat or kitten will carry Bartonella henselae. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that about 40% of cats carry the bacteria at some time in their lives. Cats that carry this disease do not show any signs of illness, so you cannot tell which cats can spread the disease to you. Kittens and feral cats are the most likely to spread the disease because they are more likely to bite or scratch.. What are the symptoms of CSD?. The symptoms of CSD ...
Cat scratch disease is a bacterial infection carried in cat saliva. It is passed from a cat bite or scratch to a human. It can also result from a fleabite, but cats are the main source.
Bacteria of the genus Bartonella are fastidious, facultative intracellular bacilli, belonging to the alpha-2 subgroup of Proteobacteria. Bartonella henselae is the causative agent of cat-scratch disease (CSD) and is also involved in other clinical situations such as endocarditis, bacillary angiomatosis (BA) and peliosis hepatitis (PH) in immunocompromised patients (1). Interestingly, erythromycin has become the drug of first choice and has been successfully used to treat many patients with BA (8) and PH (14). However, when the treatment duration is less than 15 days, relapses after antibiotic withdrawal are common, and therefore treatment should be given for 3 to 4 months (8). Macrolide compounds inhibit protein synthesis by binding to domains II and V of 23S rRNA (7). The first mechanism of macrolide resistance described was due to posttranscriptional modifications of the 23S rRNA by the adenine-N 6-methyltransferase. Modification of the ribosomal target confers cross-resistance to macrolides ...
Toxoplasmosis is a single-celled parasite. Infected cats secrete oocysts that contaminate cat litter. A person who inadvertently gets the cysts on her hands, touches her mouth and swallows can be infected. Other ways to catch toxoplasmosis are eating contaminated food or undercooked meat. Most people never develop symptoms, or develop a flu-like illness with muscle aches and swollen glands lasting up to a month. A few people, often but not always patients who are immunocompromised, can develop infections of the brain or eyes. The unborn can be infected though the placenta by an infected mother. These fetuses may die, or develop permanent damage to the brain, or eyes.. Cat-scratch disease is caused by the bacteria Bartonella henselae. This bacterium is spread by cat claws contaminated with flea feces. Symptoms include fever and enlarged lymph nodes days to weeks after a cat scratch.. Dogs, my personal favorite pet, can spread infections too. Ringworm, a fungal infection, can be spread by direct ...
A 25-year-old woman is admitted in the Radiology Department to evaluate by echography a tumefaction in the right axillary region. Multiple lymph nodes are found and the examination is completed by neck computed tomography. The presence of inflammatory lymph nodes associated with a positive serology for Bartonella Henselae led to the diagnosis of «Cat-scratch disease». Fortuitously, we discovered a hypodense left upper lung. A chest CT in breathing in and out revealed bronchial discontinuity of the apicoposterior left upper lobe bronchus. Associated radiological signs were: air trapping in the culmen while breathing out (Fig. A), local hypovascularization, small bronchoceles (Fig. B, arrow) and the presence of two bronchogenic cysts in the upper (Fig. C) and lower mediastinum.. ...
The Warthin-Starry stain (WS) is a silver nitrate-based staining method (a silver stain) used in histology. It was first introduced in 1920 by American pathologists Aldred Scott Warthin (1866-1931) and Allen Chronister Starry (1890-1973), for the detection of spirochetes. It has been considered the best stain for detection of spirochetes, and is also used to stain Helicobacter pylori, Lawsonia intracellularis, Microsporidia, and particulates. It is also important for confirmation of Bartonella henselae, a causative organism in cat-scratch disease. Warthin-Starry stains organisms dark brown to black, and the background light golden brown/golden yellow. Dieterle stain Warthin-Starry stain. Merriam-Websters Medical Dictionary. Director, Louisiana Veterinary Medical Diagnostic Laboratory, Department of Agriculture, Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Veterinarians often are consulted by the public, and occasionally by physicians and other veterinarians, for information regarding zoonoses (diseases that are transmitted to humans from animals). When a person is diagnosed with an illness that is somewhat out of the ordinary, many times relatives are worried that the family pet was the source of the trouble. Usually, however, the diseases in question are not zoonoses. There are physicians who, perhaps seeking zero risk, advise patients to dispose of pets to prevent or alleviate a zoonotic illness. Pregnant women have been advised to get rid of their cats to prevent their contracting toxoplasmosis; HIV-positive people may be told they that should not have animals at all. Although this advice may be well intended, it is often ill informed. Too often, what is missing is some reasonable approximation of the true risk of disease ...

Wild animals and insects can be carriers for some very serious diseases. These include rabies, tetanus, Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever, hantavirus, and the plague. Do not let your child feed or try to play with any wild animals (such as squirrels, chipmunks, or raccoons). Never leave a child less than 5 years of age alone around any animal-wild or domestic. Animal bites and scratches, even when they are minor, may become infected and spread bacteria to other parts of the body. Whether the bite is from a family pet or an animal in the wild, scratches and bites may carry disease. Cat scratches, for example, even from a kitten, may carry cat scratch disease, a bacterial infection. Bites and/or scratches that break the skin are even more likely to become infected. ...
B. henselae infection initiates after trauma to the skin, suggesting that adherence to host cells may be mediated by specific interactions between B. henselae surface proteins such as Pap31 and components of the host ECM such as Fn and Hep. Pap31 was previously shown to be involved in acquisition of heme and thus may be an important virulence factor for B. henselae (8, 53). Because heme receptor molecules are surface exposed, we undertook to determine if Pap31 had another virulence function as an adhesin to ECM. We have expressed and purified B. henselae Pap31 with high yield and purity and demonstrated its immunogenicity. We also demonstrated that Pap31 acts as a potential ligand for Fn and Hep, indicating its broad-range binding ability. Recognition of anti-Pap31 antibodies in rabbits or mice vaccinated with live B. henselae or purified Pap31, respectively, indicated that the protein is expressed in vivo and contributes to the humoral immune response in the host defense against B. henselae. ...
All animal bites need to be properly cleaned, and most need treatment based on the type and severity of the wound. Whether the bite is from a family pet or an animal in the wild, scratches and bites can become infected and cause scarring. Animals can also carry diseases that can be transmitted through a bite. Bites that break the skin and bites of the scalp, face, hand, wrist, or foot are more likely to become infected. Cat scratches, even from a kitten, can carry cat scratch disease, a bacterial infection.. Other animals can transmit rabies and very rarely tetanus. Rodents such as mice, rats, squirrels, chipmunks, hamsters, guinea pigs, gerbils, and rabbits are at low risk of carrying rabies, but they can transmit other diseases.. The most common type of animal bite is a dog bite. Follow these guidelines to help decrease the chance of your child being bitten by an animal:. ...

Cat Scratch Fever has a familiar paranormal set up. The heroine, Lilly, is a lynchat (werelynx) and is going into heat. This is inconvenient for her because shes trying to broker a business deal for land with the hero, Dante, who is a werewolf. The werewolves and werelynxes hate each other because werewolves stole the werelynx land years ago and wont sell it back to them.. The set up promises sexy fun and delivers. In one of the very first scenes, Lillys overcome with lust from the heat so she pulls her car over and masturbates to relieve the sensation. Naturally the hero stumbles upon her and cannot help but watch. Writing up the description, it sounds a bit heavy-handed but I thought it was well done.. Lilly is a decent heroine. She wants the land back and will do anything to get it. Shes a bit headstrong and mouthy, but not in a way that makes me roll my eyes. She refuses to take crap from anyone, especially the werewolves. Dante is the alpha of the werewolf pack and hes not an ...

Results 155 patients were diagnosed with CC in the study period. The indications for colonoscopy were altered bowel habit (acute or chronic diarrhoea) in 126/133; 33 patients reported associated weight loss. The reports from 123 patients (96F/27M; median age 68.7 yrs, range 37-91 yrs) were eventually retrieved and further reviewed. The colonoscopies had been carried out by consultant (medical/surgeons): 47%, nurse endoscopist: 20%, associate specialist: 13% and fellow or registrar: 10%. Of the above cohort, 67 (54.4%) patients had no endoscopic findings and 44 (35.7%) had irrelevant to CC findings such as diverticulosis, polyps or telangiectasias. Twelve (n=12; 9.75%) had findings previously described as consistent with CC. In particular: 7 (5.7%) had mucosal erythema or oedema (patchy, mild granularity or congestion), 4 (3.25%) had lacerations (cat-scratch mucosa or bigger mucosal breaks) and 1 of them had a few mucosal scars. The sigmoid and the descending colon were the main colonic parts ...

ISSN 1678-9946. https://doi.org/10.1590/s1678-9946202062079.. Bartonella spp. are re-emerging and neglected bacterial pathogens. The natural reservoirs for several species of this genus are domestic animals such as cats and dogs, the most common pets in the USA and Brazil. Some cat studies suggest that the infection is more prevalent in tropical and poverty-stricken areas. These bacteria were associated with a wide spectrum of clinical manifestations: fever of unknown origin, endocarditis, angiomatosis, chronic lymphadenopathy, hepatitis, fatigue, paresthesia and pain. Our group has already demonstrated that B. henselae -infected sickle cell disease mice present with hyperalgesia. We hypothesized that even immunocompetent mice infected by B. henselae would show an increased and persistent mechanical ...

Parinauds oculoglandular syndrome is the combination of granulomatous conjunctivitis in one eye, and swollen lymph nodes in front of the ear on the same side. Most cases are caused by cat-scratch disease, although it is an unusual feature of this condition. Occasionally it may be caused by other infections. It should not be confused with the neurological syndrome caused by a lesion in the midbrain which is also known as Parinauds syndrome. Both were named after the same person, Henri Parinaud. Cat scratch disease, a mild flu-like infection, with swollen lymph nodes (lymphadenitis) and mild fever of short duration, due to cat scratches, especially from kittens. There is usually a little bump (a papule) which may be pus-filled (a pustule) at the site of the scratch. The infection is self-limited and usually goes away by itself in a few weeks. It can also be treated with antibiotics, but it can cause a severe inflammation called bacillary angiomatosis in patients with weakened immune systems. A cat carrying the microbe does not show symptoms and it is not necessary to get rid of it. If someone in the household is at high risk, a test to detect the infection can be done and the cat can be treated. The disease is caused by a bacterium called Rochalimaea henselae, eventually reclassified as Bartonella henselae, named for Diane Hensel, a microbiologist. The disease has also been called regional lymphadenitis. ...

Pets are a part of our families, and preventing parasite infestations is an important part of keeping them healthy. Both ectoparasites (external parasites) and endoparasites (internal parasites) can affect your pet at some point in their life. Ectoparasites, such as fleas and ticks, are not only a nuisance to your pet, but can transmit vector-borne diseases to humans and pets such as Bartonella (cat scratch disease, transmitted by fleas); Lyme, Anaplasmosis, Ehrlichia, and Rocky Mountain Spotted fever. Fleas can also cause a severe dermatologic condition for your pet resulting in very itchy, inflamed skin, due to flea allergy dermatitis.. Roundworms are the most prevalent endoparasite in pets. Others include hookworms, whipworms, and tapeworms. Pets are typically infected with these parasites through accidental ingestion of parasite eggs (which are microscopic) from areas that have fecal contamination from other infected animals. The cat can get so stressed that the cat will get ill, or perhaps attack the baby, or someone else. References: Morris, D. (1986). Mikel says this can lead to a playful and high-energy cat chasing us around and partaking in some unexpected biting … We might not always realize it, but cats can be very attracted to our simplest motions, such as the movement of our ankles as we walk around the house. Pregnant women can transmit toxoplasmosis, a rare parasitic disease, to their unborn babies, and a toxoplasmosis infection can lead to miscarriage or cause malformed babies. If youve ever been bitten by a cat, you know exactly what Im talking about! The cat is desperate to play with you. The parasite lives at the expense of its host, meaning it needs the host in order to produce offspring, known as oocysts. If possible, a pregnant woman should not change the cat ...

Of course it has to be made of a material that a cat enjoys scratching but we know that cats scratch furniture in the same, specific places. I have marked them on the photograph above.. Is it not possible to make these areas in a material that maintains a reasonable appearance having been scratched? The remainder of the sofa could be in the usual materials.. I for one, would very much welcome a piece of furniture that I know is designed for all members of my family and that didnt exclude my cats.. There would be something very relaxing knowing that the sofa would be fine.. There are about 80 million domestic cats in the USA and about 10 million in the UK.. As I recall (and I am writing this from memory) there are about 20 million declawed cats in the USA - one quarter of all cats. I think, actually, the percentage is higher.. There are people who keep cats who will always declaw. Its just a routine. The cat scratch sofa would not please them.. But there must be a large number of cat ...
In the wild, cats scratch around their immediate environment to signal their presence to other cats and to claim the area in question. The marking takes two forms: visual and olfactory. The visual is in the form of clawing marks and is so obvious that even we humans can recognize it. The olfactory mark is subtler, involving the release of pheromones. These are substances secreted from the body to be picked up by the number of the same species, causing them to alter their behavior.. Scratching has additional function too. It removes the nail sheaths, outer layer of dead cells from the claw. You might thing your cat scratches to sharpen her claws, but it more likely it provides her with a form of physical therapy for the muscles and tendons of her paws.. There are two groups of target for every cat. The first one is when your cat target one or two areas in the home, usually near important territorial areas such as: sleeping area, litter tray, hunting or play areas. The second one is your cat ...

FELINE SCRATCHING Why do cat s scratch?. Scratching is a perfectly normal feline behavior. Although scratching does serve to shorten and condition the claws, the primary reasons that cats scratch are to mark their territory and to stretch. Cats may also threaten or play with a swipe of their paws.. For cats that live primarily outdoors, scratching is seldom a problem for the owners. Scratching is usually directed at prominent objects such as tree trunks or fence posts. Play swatting with other cats seldom leads to injuries because cats have a fairly thick skin and coat for protection. When play does get a little rough, most cats are pretty good at sorting things out between themselves. Occasionally, rough play or territorial fighting does lead to injuries or abscesses that would require veterinary attention. Cats that go outdoors may be content to scratch when outside, and leave the walls and furniture intact when indoors. Cats that spend most of their time indoors, however, will usually require ...

So as most of you know I recently acquired a new used skookum cat from my good friend bacon. I have only had er out one time, which, again, most of you know about. Well she was sittin there in my carport, lookin real good, when one day I squeezed her right tube and it was a little low. Hmm I say, a bit flustered, what the fuck?, I see the cat scratches and get a fever that no amount of cow bells could touch. It was a sad day on the homefront, but only about two days before I left for Belize so I had to forget about, it was a potential trip downer which needed to be put out of mind. A day or two before we came back, I let it start creeping in the back of mind, to sort of prepare for remembering and reliving the sadness. It wasnt as bad the second time around. Anyways, when I pumped it back up yesterday and lathered some soap on the firm tube, I saw no bubbles, smiled and applied aquaseal hoping to avoid a full on patch job. We went bowling (kingpin right here bitches), came back and and the ...

Once concrete or its slurry coat is removed from glass surfaces, most times there will be mineral stains present. These mineral stains will need to be removed by a method of wet sanding the glass surface to remove the top layer. This is due to the minerals found in concrete, mainly silica, fusing to minerals in the glass and creates a tenacious bond. This can easily be performed using the Glass ReSurfacer System. This system will remove light scratches that may have been caused by concrete removal. Once the glass is completely restored, we apply a protective treatment that will help prevent the adhesion of mineral-based stains such as concrete. As well, protect against other types of stains and scratches due to the high-performance polymeric barrier in-between the glass surface itself and damaging elements.. Architectural glass was designed to have a highly polished and 100% optical distortion-free view for the eye to focus on the other side of the window, without any obstructions or ...

The good news is that a small scratch should barely show up. If your vinyl is white on top then its going to be white beneath too. So youd have to be right on top of the scratch to actually see a problem. Now if your vinyl is blue underneath then youve got recycled vinyl which presents more of a cosmetic problem. 【Get Price】 ...

Youve decided not to scratch, eh? Good for you. Mind over matter and all that. Its the only smart move. You just have to be mature, and make a decision based on the obvious, logical choice.. Sure does itch, though, doesnt it?. Its funny. We both know that scratching will make it worse. And the only thing you have to do to accomplish the right thing is, well, nothing. But, boy howdy…! Ha ha! Cant stop thinking about it, can you? Man. Thats quite an itch. So you know the right thing, but everything in your body is telling you to scratch, scratch, scratch! Wild.. Well, thats all academic, because you, my resolute friend, are not scratching, and thats that.. I wonder, though…. I wonder… if you just scratched around me. That might work. You know, not actually agitate me and the toxins in me, but just scratch the area. Might help, even just at a psychological level. What do you think? Yeah, lets give it a go.. Hm. Well… that was fine-ish. I guess that helped, maybe? Kinda? Not really ...

I am certainly not a great scratch builder like my club mate Rekrom. Have you seen his Dimachaeron yet? But one has to start somewhere, no? And this here is my start, my first scratch built miniature for the hobby. Of course it is possibly the most easy to start with, yet I am quite satisfied the way it finally turned out to look like. Maybe the next scratches are a bit more ambitious, hehe ...
