Cytauxzoonosis is an emerging tick-borne disease of domestic and wild felids. Cytauxzoon felis induces severe and often fatal disease in domestic cats. In Europe, clinical and subclinical infections caused by Cytauxzoon sp. are described. We report the first cases of Cytauxzoon sp. infection in domestic cats in Switzerland. Clinical and laboratory data and results of PCR analyses were collected from Cytauxzoon sp. PCR-positive cats and the cats followed for up to 851 days. The cases were three two-month old kittens from the same litter (Cases 1-3) and two adult domestic shorthair cats (Cases 4 and 5). The cats originated from the north-west and west of Switzerland. Cases 1-3 presented with moderate to severe regenerative anaemia and intraerythrocytic inclusions. Cytauxzoon sp. was confirmed by PCR and sequencing. The kittens made a clinical and haematological recovery after blood transfusion and/or treatment with azithromycin and atovaquone, but erythroparasitaemia persisted. Case 4 presented with
A cat is a small mammal that can be kept in a house because its not considered as a wild animal. The cat is either a house cat, feral cat, or a farm cat. A link between lipid metabolism and disease has been recognized in cats. Since hepatic lipidosis is a frequent disorder in cats, the aim of the current study was to evaluate liver and plasma lipid dimorphism in healthy cats and the effects of gonadectomy on lipid profiling. From six female and six male cats plasma and liver lipid profiles before and after spaying/neutering were assessed and compared to five cats (three neutered male and two spayed female) diagnosed with hepatic lipidosis. Intact female cats had a significantly lower level of plasma triacylglycerides (TAG) and a higher liver level of the long chain polyunsaturated fatty acid arachidonic acid (AA) compared to their neutered state. Both male and female cats with lipidosis had a higher liver, but not plasma TAG level and an increased level of plasma and liver sphingomyelin compared to the healthy cats. Although lipid dimorphism in healthy cats resembles that of other species, intact female cats show differences in
Proliferative and necrotizing feline otitis externa is a rare disorder of unknown aetiology. This condition was diagnosed by skin biopsy in three adult domestic shorthair cats (3-5 years old) and one kitten (6 months old). The affected cats had large tan to dark brown-black coalescing plaques covering the concave surface of the pinnae and external ear canals. Friable material from the plaques and ...
By Alan. I could do with some advice please, I have a female cat 11 months old, when she was about 5 months old she went to the Vet for a blood test prior to having her spayed, the test came back with a liver infection which was then treated.. After finishing her treatment I decided to wait for her first season to come and go before going back to the Vet for the operation as the Vet didnt want to operate on a cat in season and I thought she must be about due (I have never had a female cat before), in short I am still waiting.. I have seen no signs of her coming into season yet, my friend has a female cat and I know how they act in season. I dont really want to put her through an operation if she doesnt have seasons for some reason. Can they be so mild that I am missing them? She is an indoor cat and I am with her pretty much 24/7. She has no contact with other cats, nor will she. ...
A deficiency in the enzyme Pyruvate Kinase impairs the red blood cells ability to metabolize, which in turn may cause anemia and other blood-related issues. Breeds more prone to this deficiency include the Abyssinian, Somali, and domestic shorthair cats. Learn more about the causes and treatment of this condition in cats on PetMD.com.

TY - JOUR. T1 - Facilitation by estrogen of sexual reflexes in female cats. AU - Hart, Benjamin. PY - 1971/1/1. Y1 - 1971/1/1. N2 - Nine adult, ovariectomized, female cats administered an exogenous estrogen displayed sexual responses, including the spinal reflexes of lateral tail deviation and treading of the back legs with sexually active male cats. Some of the animals displayed the same reflexes to perineal stimulation by the experimenter. A spinal transection was performed and 60 days later, when neurological spinal shock had subsided and strength of somatic reflexes had stabilized for several weeks, animals were tested for sexual reflexes before and after estrogen administration. Two spinal animals displayed partial sexual reflexes before the estrogen administration. Following estrogen administration facilitation of tail deviation and treading occurred in these two as well as five of the other 7 animals. These and other observations suggest that the display of these sexual reflexes in intact ...
To prevent allergies in cats, you need to build your cats immunity. Today the Persian is the most popular cat … The dignified and docile Persian cat is known for being quiet and sweet. The Persian cat (Persian: گربهٔ ایرانی ‎, romanized: Gorbe-ye irāni ‚Iranian cat) is a long-haired breed of cat characterized by its round face and short muzzle. Allergies, flea attack,s and hormone imbalance can be a possible reason behind hair loss in clumps in a Persian cat. Viral Respiratory Infections. Environmental allergies, like pollen or mildew, are much more common in cats than allergies caused by food. These will probably be similar to those you may have witnessed in humans with an allergy. Also, allergies tend to be more common among outdoor cats because they are exposed to a wider range of potential allergens, especially from plants and organic matter. If a cat has an allergy, they will usually show quite obvious allergic symptoms. Traditional Persians do not have as short a face as ...

There is no way to know for certain, by some experts estimate that the feral cat population in North America may equal or even exceed that of the owned cat population. Feral cats are not socialized to humans and avoid contact with people whenever possible. In contrast, stray cats are often those cats that have left a home or have been abandoned by their owners. These strays may have been socialized to humans at one time and will often approach people and may even allow petting. All cats, feral, stray and owned cats that simply roam the neighborhood are all members of the domestic species, Felis catus.. TY - JOUR. T1 - Estrogen attenuates the exercise pressor reflex in female cats. AU - Schmitt, Petra M.. AU - Kaufman, Marc P. PY - 2003/10/1. Y1 - 2003/10/1. N2 - In humans, the pressor and muscle sympathetic nerve responses to static exercise are less in women than in men. The difference has been attributed to the effect of estrogen on the exercise pressor reflex. Estrogen receptors are abundant in areas of the dorsal horn receiving input from group III and IV muscle afferents, which comprise the sensory limb of the exercise pressor reflex arc. These findings prompted us to investigate the effect of estrogen on the spinal pathway of the exercise pressor reflex arc. Previously, we found that the threshold concentration of 17β-estradiol needed to attenuate the exercise pressor reflex in male decerebrate cats was 10 μg/ml (Schmitt PM and Kaufman MP. J Appl Physiol 94: 1431-1436, 2003). The threshold concentration for female cats, however, is not known. Consequently, we applied 17β-estradiol to ...
Several surveys have been reported on the seroprevalence or B1 gene detection of T. gondii infection in stray cats in Korea [3-5,7,8]. In 1999, 13.1% (26/198) of stray cats captured from a southern area (around Jinju City) showed positive western blot patterns for T. gondii [3]. In 2008, of 174 stray cats captured from Gyeonggi Province, serum specific antibodies were positive in 14 cats (8.0%) by latex agglutination test, 28 cats (16.1%) by ELISA, and 23 cats (13.2%) by PCR detection of the B1 gene in blood samples [4]. However, in the same year, a strikingly high prevalence (47.2%) in blood of stray cats by nested-PCR was reported from Gyeonggi Province [5]. Subsequently, the seroprevalence of stray cats from Metropolitan Seoul was reported as 15.3% (11/72) by ELISA, with the B1 gene positive rate in blood of 30.6% (22/72) by nested PCR in 2010 [7]. In another survey, the seroprevalence of stray cats from Metropolitan Seoul was 15.8% (69/456) by ELISA, and the B1 gene positive rate in blood ...
Many Siamese once had kinks in their tails, though this has been mostly bred out of modern Siamese cats. There are a couple of legends to explain the kinked tail. The first involves the disappearance of a valuable goblet from a Buddhist temple. Two Siamese cats were sent to find it. When they had located the goblet, the male cat went back to let the priests know that the mission had been successful, while the female remained to guard the goblet. She wound her tail around the stem to ensure that the goblet did not go missing again, and as a result, her tail became permanently kinked.. A second legend has it that a Siamese princess placed her rings on her cats tail for safekeeping. When the cat slept, the rings fell from her tail and were lost. The princess tied a knot in the cats tail to prevent future losses, creating a kink in the tail that appeared in all Siamese cats from that day forward.. Siamese Cat Personality. Siamese are believed to be the most intelligent and inquisitive of all cat ...

Good morning everyone...Today Id like to talk about a study conducted in 2002 concerning feline lymphoma and secondhand cigarette smoke. The information gathered back then by scientists at Tufts School of Veterinary Medicine and the University of Massachusetts in a study called Environmental Tobacco Smoke and Risk of Malignant Lymphoma in Pet Cats showed a direct link to secondhand smoke and pet cats developing the cancer.. The findings of this study was published in the August, 2002 issue of American Journal of Epidemiology, show that cats who live with secondhand smoke are twice as susceptible. Increased feline lymphoma rates may even be as much as 65% greater than a cat living in a smoke-free environment. Figures for a cat living for 5 years in a tobacco smoking home increased to 3x the risk for developing lymphoma. When there are two smokers in a home the rate rises to 4x as likely.. Dogs living in a smoking home have a 60% risk of developing lung cancer.. The study was conducted at the ...
Feline Enteritis (or Parvovirus) causes the same fever, loss of appetite, and vomiting & bloody diarrhoea in cats and is much worse in kittens. Without intensive treatment of intravenous fluids and antibiotics, affected cats often rapidly die from dehydration and secondary bacterial infection. The disease is very contagious and affected cats can continue to shed the virus for at least six weeks after infection. Even indoor cats are at risk as the virus can be carried on clothing and footwear. Pregnant cats can transmit the virus to their unborn kittens causing brain damage.. I have not seen Parvovirus in cats since my early years working as a vet because there is has been an excellent vaccine available for many years which will effectively prevent this disease. It is part of the usual kitten and cat vaccination program available at veterinary clinics. The recent outbreak has, as far as we know, been confined to Melbourne, with a small number of cases in Werribee, but that is too close to Geelong ...

Therapeutic goals for otherwise healthy diabetic cats. The principle goals of treating diabetes in cats are to correct the major clinical signs of diabetes (weight loss, polydipsia / polyuria, and polyphagia or inappetence), and to prevent diabetic ketoacidosis. Additional goals are to minimize the risk of hypoglycaemia by appropriate dose adjustment of insulin or oral hypoglycaemic agents. Appropriate therapy of cats may also lead to diabetic remission, although currently it is not possible at diagnosis to predict which cats are more likely to go into remission. Treatment that is most effective in correcting hyperglycaemia is more likely to lead to remission by facilitating the recovery of the pancreatic cells from glucose toxicity.. Treatment modalities. Diet. General considerations. In cats, post-prandial hyperglycaemia is very prolonged (up to 18-24h) in cats fed typical cat foods. Therefore there does not seem any need to match the timing of the insulin dose to meals, which is important in ...
Mating calls (or mating cries) are usually defined as the long sequences of trills, trill-meows and meows used by female cats in heat when they want to attract a male partner, and also by male cats (unneutered as well as some neutered males) who respond to the signals (vocal and/or olfactory) of a female cat in heat ...
Lancefield group G Streptococcus canis is a component of the normal urogenital and pharyngeal flora of the cat. It is also frequently implicated in epizootics of severe disease in closed cat colonies and animal shelters. Given the importance of S canis as a feline pathogen and relative lack of published information on characteristics potentially associated with virulence, the authors have compared isolates from healthy and diseased cats in New York and California using fermentation profiles (biotype) and ScM sequences. With few exceptions, isolates associated with disease were biotype 1. Four alleles of scm were identified of which type 1 dominated in diseased cats. Type 4 allelic variants were found only in healthy cats and all but one were biotype 2. Type 2 and 3 alleles showed extensive N-terminal variation suggesting a plasminogen-binding site as found on the type 1 allele was absent. Cat antisera to ScM were opsonobactericidal, and these potentially protective antibodies increased during ...

BACKGROUND Remission occurs in 10-50% of cats with diabetes mellitus (DM). It is assumed that intensive treatment improves β-cell function and increases remission rates. HYPOTHESIS Initial intravenous infusion of insulin that achieves tight glycemic control decreases subsequent insulin requirements and increases remission rate in diabetic cats. ANIMALS Thirty cats with newly diagnosed DM. METHODS Prospective study. Cats were randomly assigned to one of 2 groups. Cats in group 1 (n = 15) received intravenous infusion of insulin with the goal of maintaining blood glucose concentrations at 90-180 mg/dL, for 6 days. Cats in group 2 (n = 15) received subcutaneous injections of insulin glargine (cats ≤4 kg: 0.5-1.0 IU, q12h; ,4 kg 1.5-2.0 IU, q12h), for 6 days. Thereafter, all cats were treated with subcutaneous injections of insulin glargine and followed up for 6 months. Cats were considered in remission when euglycemia occurred for ≥4 weeks without the administration of insulin. Nonparametric ...
An adult cat needs to consume five to eight percent of its body weight in food per day and females with kittens require 20%. Cats can have two litters a year, averaging four kittens a litter. Kittens are weaned at 8 weeks, become sexually mature at approximately 6-8 months and can produce a litter during the same year of their birth.. An unspayed cat is a menace in our community, with male cats spraying and females producing many young. One cat and its offspring can produce 2905 kittens at 7 years and 49,000 at 10 years. When you consider the implications of the uncontrolled exponential growth of a cat population, it is quite frightening. Uncontrolled domestic cat populations do contribute to increasing the feral cat population and cats are having a huge impact on native animals, reptiles and birds.. Many cat owners choose to allow their cats to wander well beyond their property boundaries. Whilst out and about, their cats are at risk of experiencing car accidents, injuries in fights with other ...
Perhaps the most coveted title a cat can be awarded in CFA is that of Distinguished Merit or DM. To be awarded the Distinguished Merit title in CFA, a male cat must sire a minimum of 15 cats who have earned at least one of three titles: Grand Champion, Grand Premier or Distinguished Merit.. A Female DM must have produced 5 or more offspring who earn at least one of these titles.. Regardless of how many titles it earns, an individual cat can count only once towards the DM title of each of its parents.. Often called the Breeders title, the DM represents how well a cat has contributed to the next generation of its breed... and it is the recognition of this impact on future generations that makes this award such a special accomplishment.. In 1983, the first Distinguished Merit title earned by a Maine Coon was a female, CH Sundar Tiffany of Tufpaws, DM. It was nine years before the first male Maine Coon would earn a DM, when GC, BW, RW Lovabacons Tom Terrificat, DM earned his in 1992. ...
Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease is common among many cats. Know the warning signs and how nutrition can play a pivotal role in preventing FLUTD.
Treatment consists primarily of modifying the environment to help reduce stress levels, dietary modifications, medications for pain, and other pharmaceuticals that may alter your cats mental state.. Multi-modal environmental modifications (MEMO) is the term that is used to describe altering the cats environment in an attempt to reduce the cats stress level. See the Living and Management section below for more information about MEMO.. Pain medications are often used in treating interstitial cystitis to relieve the discomfort caused by the inflammation within the bladder and urinary tract and make your cat more comfortable while urinating.. Dietary modifications are often necessary and you should follow your veterinarians directions if a special diet is recommended. Increasing water consumption is an important part of treatment and feeding canned food, when possible, will help increase the moisture content in your cats diet.. Pheromones such as Feliway are often recommended to help reduce ...
A stray is a cat who has been abandoned or who has strayed from home and become lost. Stray cats can usually be re-socialized and adopted. A feral cat is an unsocialized cat.. Either he was born outside and never lived with humans, or he is a house cat who has strayed from home and over time has thrown off the effects of domestication and reverted to a wild state. Feral cats should not be taken to local shelters to be adopted.. Feral cats are not pet cats, and they will be killed at most shelters. Because they’re unadoptable, they sometimes don’t even make it to the shelter, but are killed in the animal control truck. Even no-kill shelters are not able to place feral cats in homes. Feral kittens can be adopted.. Feral kittens can often be tamed and placed in homes, but they must be socialized in their first weeks of life. This is a critical window and if they aren’t handled in time, they will remain feral and therefore unadoptable. Feral cats have about the same lifespan as ...

The mutation that gives male cats a ginger-colored coat and females ginger, tortoiseshell, or calico coats produced a particularly telling map. The orange mutant gene is found only on the X, or female, chromosome. As with humans, female cats have paired sex chromosomes, XX, and male cats have XY sex chromosomes. The female cat, therefore, can have the orange mutant gene on one X chromosome and the gene for a black coat on the other. The piebald gene is on a different chromosome. If expressed, this gene codes for white, or no color, and is dominant over the alleles that code for a certain color (i.e. orange or black), making the white spots on calico cats. If that is the case, those several genes will be expressed in a blotchy coat of the tortoiseshell or calico kind. But the male, with his single X chromosome, has only one of that particular coat-color gene: he can be not-ginger or he can be ginger (although some modifier genes can add a bit of white here and there), but unless he has a ...

The cavernous sinus (CS) is a paired venous sinus that runs along either side of the pituitary gland on the floor of the calvarium. Cavernous sinus syndrome (CSS) refers to deficits in more than one of the cranial nerves III, IV, V, and VI, as they are in close association in this region. The purpose of this study was to identify the presenting complaints, neurologic findings, diagnosis, and outcomes in dogs and cats with confirmed cavernous sinus syndrome (CSS). Medical records between 2002 and 2015 were reviewed. Inclusion criteria were neurologic signs consistent with CSS and advanced imaging and/or post-mortem examination. Thirteen dogs and 2 cats were included. Twelve dogs received advanced imaging. Post-mortem examination was performed on 2 cats and 3 dogs. Dogs were 6 -13 years (mean= 10.8 years) of age and comprised of several different breeds. Both cats were male neutered domestic shorthair, ages 3 and 14 years. Presenting complaints included mydriasis (N=4), behavior changes (N=3), ...
Female cats come into heat cycles every three to four weeks during certain times of the year. Many female cats will become nervous during these heat cycles and exhibit unusual behaviors such as rolling on the floor, furtively hiding, or wanting constant attention. Female cats often become quite vocal, too, meowing plaintively through their cycle.. Surgical neutering (spay) of female dogs and cats called ovariohysterectomy, completely eliminates all heat cycles and the accompanying unwanted bleeding cycle, nervousness, and desire to mate. Neutering your female dog or cat will also protect your pet from uterine infections and other diseases as well as difficult or dangerous pregnancies. Studies show that by neutering your female dog before her first heat cycle, you can greatly reduce her chances of developing mammary cancer later in life. The surgery includes the removal of the ovaries, fallopian tubes, and uterus.. Most male dogs and cats are ready and willing to reproduce by the time they are ...

Mycoplasma haemofelis (formerly Haemobartonella felis) is a gram negative epierythrocytic parasitic bacterium. It often appears in bloodsmears as small (0.6μm) coccoid bodies, sometimes forming short chains of 3 to 6 organisms. It is usually the causative agent of Feline Infectious Anemia (FIA) in the United States. The ~1.15 Mb genome contains a minimalistic assortment of genes limited to the most basic cellular functions. This leaves M. haemofelis inextricably dependent upon its host for the provision of amino acids, cholesterol, vitamins, and fatty acids. The complex and specific conditions the bacterium requires have made it impossible to culture outside a host thus far. Arthropod vectors are thought to be the primary source of infection, although M. haemofelis is also known to be transmitted from queen to kitten and following blood transfusion. Candidatus Mycoplasma turicensis (Candidatus M. turicensis) is a hemoplasma species that infects felids. It differs from other feline hemoplasma species due to its particular infection kinetics and phylogenetic similarity to rodent hemoplasma species. The lower and shorter bacteremia produced by Candidatus M. turicensis suggests a possible tissue sequestration of the organism. The aim of this study was to explore this possibility. Five specified-pathogen free cats were subcutaneously inoculated with Candidatus M. turicensis and sacrificed 86 days after inoculation. Thirty-one selected organs were collected upon necropsy, and samples were analyzed by real-time Taqman(®) PCR. The humoral immune response was monitored by DnaK ELISA. All five cats had detectable Candidatus M. turicensis loads in the majority (52-100%) of the tested tissues. High Candidatus M. turicensis tissue loads (average 3.46×10(4)copies/10mg) were detected in the samples. The presence of the organisms in the ...
Just before going into heat, many female cats become more affectionate than usual. While in heat, they are inclined to yowl, lick their genitals frequently, roll around on the floor, and assume a mating position (head down, hindquarters raised, tail held out of the way). Usually only male cats spray to mark territory, but unspayed females may also spray when in heat.. Female cats in heat are extremely anxious and frustrated when confined indoors. Even those that are usually content as indoor cats are likely to make desperate escape attempts while in heat.. How often do unspayed female cats go into heat?. Unspayed female cats go into heat every 14-21 days (until they become pregnant) and this phase can last anywhere from 3-16 days.. Can a pregnant cat go into heat?. Some cats go into heat and mate when already pregnant. This phenomenon is known as superfetation when it results in a queen carrying two litters, one more advanced than the other. The younger kittens may be born alongside their more ...
Among evaluated animals, Y. pestis was isolated from six of 12 cats; five of the six were from areas in southwestern Idaho where dead ground squirrels with confirmed Y. pestis had been reported in May 2016, and one was from from eastern Idaho. Among these six cats, specimen collection occurred during May 31-July 12, 2016; cats ranged in age from 10 months to 14.5 years (median = 4 years), four (67%) were male, five (83%) resided both indoors and outdoors, and one resided outdoor only. All six cats were domestic shorthair breed and had been neutered or spayed. Fever and lymphadenopathy (n = 4, 67%) were the most commonly reported signs of illness. None of the cats had known pulmonary involvement. Three of the six cats were treated with appropriate antibiotics (1); of these, two survived and one was euthanatized. The three other cats had died or had been euthanatized. All six cats reportedly had contact with ground squirrels and other wild rodents or rabbits before becoming ill; one had flea ...
On the other hand, the health of outdoor cats is threatened by contagious diseases such as feline leukemia, feline immunodeficiency virus, feline infectious peritonitis and rabies.. Feline immunodeficiency virus, or feline AIDS, for example, is a fatal disease that is carried by up to 14 percent of the cat population. It is transmitted from cat to cat by blood and saliva. This happens primarily through biting so outdoor and male cats that fight with other cats are at greatest risk. Parasites such as fleas, ticks and worms most commonly attack outdoor cats. If you allow your cat to go in and out at will, he will carry these parasites back into your home. Outdoor cats are more likely to contract diseases such as toxoplasmosis, ringworm and roundworms, all of which are zoonotic meaning they can be transmitted to people.. Outdoor cats may be attacked by wildlife or free-roaming domestic animals. As unpleasant as it is to think about, they may succumb to traffic accidents, pet-theft, poison, ...

Female cats may also fall victim to pyometra. In cats, the disease is just as serious and the treatment options are the same. There is an important difference for cats with pyometra, however: female cats rarely appear sick until very late stages of the disease. The classic creamy vaginal discharge is present and often the belly appears distended because of the size of the pus-filled uterus, but the cat herself is generally eating and grooming as if nothing is much is going on. If the female cat is fastidious and cleans away the discharge, the pet owner may wrongly conclude that she is simply pregnant. Unfortunately, this lack of apparent illness leads to a delay in diagnosis and this delay can be lethal.. As with dogs, diagnosis is usually by radiography though ultrasound can be used, particularly if radiography is ambiguous. Treatment for cats is similar to treatment for dogs: surgery is traditional but prostaglandins may be used if it is important to preserve the cats ability to breed. A Few ...

Maxs House. Lymphosarcoma In Cats. Mary Ann Vonderhaar and Wallace B. Morrison. Lymphosarcoma is a neoplasm of malignant lymphocytes in solid organs such as lymph nodes, bone marrow, or visceral organs such as the liver and spleen. Lymphosarcoma is usually amenable to chemotherapy protocols that are within the capabilities of most veterinary practices.. LYMPHOSARCOMA IN CATS Hematopoietic tumors are the most frequently occurring tumors in domestic cats, and they account for about 33% of all feline tumors. Lymphosarcoma accounts for up to 90% of the hematopoietic tumors in cats, with an estimated incidence of 200 cases/100,000 cats at risk. No increased prevalence has been reported for any sex or breed of cat. The usual age of cats at diagnosis is between 2 and 6 years. In many cases, lymphosarcoma in cats follows infection with the feline leukemia virus (FeLV). FeLV is a very immunosuppressive retrovirus that has been linked to the development of lymphosarcoma in both FeLV test-positive and ...

This webcast includes printable course notes. This 70 minute online vet nurse CPD webcast will discuss how the majority of cases of feline lower urinary tract disease (FLUTD) represent feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC), with estimates ranging between 50 and 70 %. Whilst the underlying aetiology of this complex, challenging, painful and often recurrent condition remains elusive, stress has been identified as a major contributing factor. In cases of non-obstructive FIC, medical management alone therefore is not enough. Behavioural therapy has a significant contribution to make as a routine part of the treatment programme of affected cats in a situation that is frequently distressing for both patients and their owners. The webcast will include: A summary of our current understanding of feline idiopathic cystitis (FIC) Commonly encountered behavioural signs and identifying high risk individuals Treatment options, including detailed home care and the importance of environmental and management programmes The

Management of feral cats is controversial, and alternatives to lethal control methods are gaining popularity. To evaluate the effectiveness of sterilization programs, nine feral cat colonies were divided into groups of three, managed either by spaying females and castrating males, spaying females and vasectomizing males, or leaving all cats intact. Colonies were followed intensively for four years, and intermittently for three additional years. Most cats were trapped in fewer than ten trap nights each. Breeding females produced a mean of 1.4 litters/year and 3 kittens/litter. Kitten mortality was 75% by 6 months of age. Feral and pet domestic cats had similar baseline health status and prevalences of FIV, FeLV, Cryptosporidium, Giardia, and Toxocara cati, but feral cats had higher prevalences of Bartonalla henselae and Toxoplasma gondii. Castrated male and spayed female cats survived longer than intact male and female cats. Survival times of vasectomized males were equivalent to those of intact ...
The biggest problem is stray cats, not dogs. The problem with dogs is abandonment. Female cats, however, multiply at much faster rates - a female cat can get pregnant as young as four or five months old, and can give birth two to three times per year, Ayiomamitis said.. The only way to tackle the chronic overpopulation of cats, he said, was for the government to give €100,000 for at least five years in a row. He added that funds should be distributed according to the cat population of each district.. But taking into account the history of state funding for this cause, he said, to us this is empty promises. We thank them, and we are looking forward to receiving it if we finally get it.. There has been a surge in cat numbers this year he said.. We had many births, many abandonments which also led to increase of a disease which killed many kittens.. For Dawn Foote, a volunteer at the Tala Monastery Cats sanctuary in Paphos, if the money is managed correctly, it may have a very small ...
Problems with the urinary tract in cats can cause excessive urine production or an urge to urinate frequently.. If your cat has cystitis often the first sign you will notice is that it is passing small amounts of urine very often. Sometimes you will see blood in the urine and occasionally your cat will strain as if trying to go to the toilet but nothing comes out. In these cases cystitis may be mistaken for constipation or an obstruction in the urinary tract. A blockage in the urinary tract is more common in male cats than females. Obstruction to the urinary tract is an emergency situation so if you think your cat is straining to pee then you should contact your vet immediately.. Cats may also choose not to use a litter tray and spray or urinate in other parts of the house. This may be due to a medical problem but in many cases can be a behavioural response to stressful situations. In multicat households cats may avoid using a litter tray frequented by other cats and most cats will avoid a dirty ...

It can be raised together. It has nothing to do with the variety. But it is related to the character of the two cats. Generally speaking, as long as the cats personality is not particularly conflicting, it is OK to be together.. The key is that the host should not be biased, at least not to let any of them feel that the host is biased, whether it is diet or sleep or play or the hosts attitude. Otherwise, it will either cause jealousy and fight, or cause a lost cat to be depressed and sick.. Extended data:. Tips for adult cat feeding:. 1. Domestic cats (felis catus) have a reputation for being rather unpredictable in their dietary choices. While their appetite for protein or savory flavors is consistent with their nutritional needs, their preference among protein-sufficient dietary options may relate to differences in the response to other flavor characteristics. Studies of domestic cat taste perception are limited, in part, due to the lack of receptor sequence information. Several studies have described the phylogenetic relationship of specific cat taste receptor sequences as compared with other carnivores. For example, domestic cats are obligate carnivores and their receptor Tas1r2, associated with the human perception of sweet, is present only as a pseudogene. Similarly, the cat perception of bitter may differ from that of other mammals due to variations in their repertoire of bitter receptor (Tas2r) genes. This report includes the first functional characterization of domestic cat taste receptors. We functionally expressed two

High lipid : low dextrose (HL:LD) parenteral admixture (PA) is high in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) that are sensitive to peroxidation. This study evaluated the antioxidative effect of vitamin E in both HL:LD PA and in obese cats given HL:LD PA. Natural d-á-tocopherol (Vital E-300) was added to HL:LD PA at seven concentrations (8, 12, 16, 24, 32, 48, or 64 IU/g of lipid). PA were exposed to fluorescent light for 24 hours at room temperature. Hydroperoxides were measured at baseline and 24 hours hang time. Significantly lower hydroperoxide concentrations were found with > 24 IU/g of lipid at baseline (P < 0.01). A higher d-á-tocopherol concentration was required (> 48 IU/g lipid) to lower hydroperoxides at 24 hours (P < 0.0001). HL:LD PA with 40 IU/g lipid/day d-á-tocopherol was delivered intravenously to obese cats (PA Toc+) over 48 hours. Control cats (PA Toc-) received HL:LD PA without a d-á-tocopherol supplementation. Feline elimination problems (spraying or inappropriate elimination) are one of the most common behavioural problems seen in cats. Spraying (urine marking) refers to an action which relays a message to other cats about territory. Inappropriate elimination on the other hand refers to urinating or defecating on or in a place other than the litter box or outside in the garden, not related to the marking of territory.. Urine marking behaviour is normal in cats although unpleasant for the owner. Cats use the senses of sight, smell and hearing to communicate with each other. As cats are hunters, they tend to communicate over large distances, to not infringe on another cats territory. Some cats will vocalise to get their owners or other cats attention; such as when they want to be fed or let out or when they feel threatened. Cats which are close to each other will look at the other cats body posture or facial expression to establish what the mood of the other cat is. Facial expressions and body ...
OK, this is going to be my last effort with you EH: life is too short for this stuff.. I could say the same with deer. Whats the average age of a buck killed in UT. 1-2 years old I would imagine. So could we use the same argument?. No you cant. The elk/deer are bred by the state to be harvested with specific age and gender objectives. Cats are not: a dead cat is a dead cat, and for most hunters learning the sex and age of the animal is only after the thing is dead and at your feet.. You obviously know that cats are territorial, and big cats stay higher than young cats. Its alot easier to catch a young cat also, big toms and females have been chased or treed many times, which might explain why young cats are getting killed. . Hunters would rather target larger animals which is what houndsman do. Surveying the age and sex of animals killed in a hunt is a very objective and accurate way of determining the population at large. Maybe you should do some reading about such issues before just ...
Cats are trickier to care for than most dogs.. In the US, there are about 5% more cat than dog households. About 65% to 60%. (That means, for all you pet lovers out there, 40% of households do not have a pet. Yes! 40%, Can you believe that?!) Yet cat medicine is still a new endeavor. Cats are not small dogs. We learned that in the 1970s, when cats went blind and suffered dilated cardiomyopathy from lack of the essential amino acid taurine. Dogs and humans assemble their own taurine in the body. Cats do not. So the poor things were going blind and suffering heart attacks because no one knew!. Cats are tricky to hold, restrain, and work with. And they oftentimes hide their symptoms of illness until they are rip-roaring super-duper sick. A sick cat often needs intravenous fluids to save his or her life.. Many people ask Doc Truli, How do you keep an i.v. in a cat?. Well now, thats a good question.. ...
