The analysis in this paper is based on surveys of the UK graduation cohorts of 1974, 1977, 1980, 1983, 1993, 1996, 1999, 2000, 2002, and 2005. The methods used have been described in detail elsewhere [5, 6]. Towards the end of the first, third and fifth years after graduation, and at longer time intervals after that, questionnaires were sent to all medical graduates in each year-of-graduation cohort. Up to four reminders were sent to non-respondents. The graduates of 1974 from all medical schools in England, Wales and Scotland were surveyed. From the cohorts of 1977 onwards, the surveys covered the whole of the UK including Northern Ireland. The total number of medical schools in the UK has changed across the decades covered by the surveys (notably, some of the London schools merged) but, at the time of analysis for this paper, there were 23 medical schools in the studies. The UK MCRG studies and surveys have ethical approval from the National Research Ethics Service (reference 04/Q1907/48) ...

I will ask him about career prospects. In assessing and comparing the Post-grad. dip. in Occupational Health and Safety (PDip OHS) and the MEH programs, I thought that the career prospects for the two groups were quite similar and so the MEH won my commitment because I thought the work might be more interesting. But having had the time to reflect on and process what I had read and from rereading some of the course information this morning, now I am not sure that the two courses will launch me towards a career at the same velocities. I get the impression that MEH graduates generally start off as Environmental Health Officers while some find employment as "Scientific Officers in government and a wide range of other fields including the food industry and environmental management". That sounds promising but I havent seen any real indication anywhere of career prospects and the demand for graduates. In contrast, the PDip. OHS page includes a section headed Career Opportunities wherein graduates ...
SPCR Clinical Training Awards for ST3 GP Trainees These SPCR awards for GP vocational trainees are made for 2 years at ST3 level, subject to the availability of regional support and NHS funding (we fund only the 0.5wte academic component of the training). The aim is to complement the national ACF scheme by allowing later entry as it is clear that ST1 is too early for many trainees to make an informed decision about following an academic track and emerging talent is being missed. Applicants are required to meet national eligibility criteria for academic training and will have a training number and be on a VTS. SPCR GP Career Progression Awards There is an increasing demand for part-time academic training for personal reasons and from clinicians who do not wish to lose clinical competencies. In 2012 we introduced part time GP Career Progression awards. These can be for a length of time from 12 to 24 months. SPCR PhD Studentships These are available to those with limited primary care experience ...
The need to assess clinical competencies in a medical environment is an intriguing issue due to progressive involvement of young physicians in clinical practice, as well as for connections tied to evaluation systems to define postgraduate training and career progression. To reach this goal, system must be based upon contributions that are aimed to achieve a clear and homogeneous evaluation pathway and strictly related to the continuing medical education institution (credits). All these presuppositions are instrumental for the proposal of a sheet which could allow a data retrieval useful to depict a career progression by means of: identification of reproducible parameters along with clear standards; advices for indicators; objective judgments that could drive to a score meaningful for reaching higher steps in the performance evaluation ...

In today´s ever changing world, systematic and focused career management is becoming increasingly important for both researchers and their employers. However research organisations face the challenge of how to guide researchers through this process and how to enable them to become creative, critical and autonomous intellectual risk takers.. Currently variety of career development tools is available, some of them are formal and structured, other are based on informal and self-directed approach. But how to ensure that these tools, usually designed for the use in certain research environments, can be transferred to other contexts? And how to make them more reflexive to the increasing variability of career patterns and opportunities which arise with the creation of brand new jobs in the near future?. REFLEX - A two-year project joining forces of partners from five European countries, will address these challenges through the designing of intelligent career development framework based on the direct ...

During the past twelve months, the Career Development Center surveyed the graduating class of 2014 using a series of mail, web and phone surveys. We also collected data from employers, parents, faculty and other sources. The Career Development Center uses the Registrars information for this process, so this report includes graduates of August 2013, December 2013, and May 2014. A response rate of 70 percent was realized from the survey. This report was prepared in July 2015.. In every possible instance, comparative data for the last five years is given. Some duplication of numbers will exist, primarily within the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Students who graduated with dual majors have been counted in both majors for the individual major reports, but have been counted only once for the purposes of overall College and University statistics. Also, there are a few cases in which respondents indicated both enrollment in graduate school and employment as their primary status. In those cases, ...
To prevent career malnourishment, consider applying these five activities to your daily routine:. 1. Stop Weighing Down Conversations. Too many people, especially early in their career or in the throes of transition, want to be open to all opportunities and are unwilling to limit their options. Therefore, they weigh down career conversations with non-nutritional messages that lead to flabby results. Forget that. Reign in your fear, and get absolutely focused on what you want and where you fit. Then, lean up your communications with well-honed, sharp content that lifts your career advancement to new levels.. 2. Build Up a Value Proposition. This means, you must take the time to do the heavy intellectual lifting. Perform extensive introspection-in writing-as to what your unique areas of value are and weave these into your resume, online profiles, emails, texts and networking orations, among other venues. Ensure you are intimately digesting your own value and that it pulsates throughout your ...

Dr Clare Blackburn worked with a team of researchers from the University of Warwick to study data from the 2004/5 national Family Resources Survey (FRS). She said, "The FRS has data on 16,012 children aged 0-18 years. We found that 7.3% of these were reported as being disabled, almost two percentage points (250,000 children) more than published estimates for 2003-4. The highest prevalence of childhood disability was found among those with the poorest income".. The results of this study clearly show that disabled children in the UK today continue to experience income inequality and material and social disadvantage. Speaking about the reasons for this, Dr Blackburn from the University of Warwick said:. "Households with disabled children have caring responsibilities that makes them far less able to seek employment and far less able to have any career progression for those who are able to also to take up job. With this reduced ability to earn an income comes the significant additional financial ...

This episode makes me mindful of a management job I once held. The employees under my supervision must have sensed I valued honesty because they admitted to something really stupid that had serious regional effect. When I reported the circumstance as we understood it to my boss, together we took it to her boss. At that level we were instructed to lie, because admitting the truth to district heads was just too embarrassing. I had a problem with this. The truth flowed upward all the way to the top where it was promptly wrenched into lie. Shortly after I found another job. And that hurt my career progression immeasurably, so I cant really recommend it. The lesson for me was; sometimes you just have to bite it. Either that, or abandon the whole job thing altogether and just do your own thing. Its a drag being beholden to a company. ...
The rest of us, were thrilled to be in a place with lots of jobs. Were thrilled to have many choices so we can pick what suits. Were thrilled to not be stuck in a three company town where real career progression is almost impossible because theres nowhere to go. Were thrilled to be surrounded by other smart ambitious people. We love meeting them, learning from them, going to maker and hacker spaces with them, collaborating with them, sharing new ideas, and building new companies with them. All of that can only happen in a place where there are a large number of talented people who have lots of opportunities to rub shoulders together. It can only happen in a place that is a hub for such things. Theres a reason why the beautiful thing that is Silicon Valley cant easily be recreated - because you need a large swell of talented people in one area for something like this to thrive. Jobs that dont get added here dont just get added somewhere else - for the most part they just dont exist. ...

Update: 25 October 2019 Along the way, certain people have been particularly influential in terms of career progression and/or personal development; so its appropriate to acknowledge as many as I can remember. So here goes… Close friends and relatives My parents Ted & Betty Rice, of course. My uncle George Chandler who, playing guitar in a nightclub jazz trio and building a yacht to sail around the world, epitomised cool to an impressionable 10-year-old. Rita Smith, always the aunty I was closest to and her daughters Norma (now Norma Klunder) and Maureen (now Maureen Williams) who embodied the mysteries of teenage girl to their younger, only child male cousin. Ex-wives Linda Rice and Jane Rice inevitably have left their marks on me - as have ex-fiancees Jennie Beasty and Val Horsfall. Liz Olson was an American and a fellow Jefferson Starship fan who flew across the Atlantic to challenge some of my precepts! My 2 oldest friends, Chris Scurrah and David Burnby have been hugely influential ...

Downloadable ! Author(s): Gathmann, Christina & Schönberg, Uta. 2007 Abstract: This paper studies how portable skill accumulated in the labor market are. Using rich data on tasks performed in occupations, we propose the concept of task-specific human capital to measure the transferability of skills empirically. Our results on occupational mobility and wages show that labor market skills are more portable than previously considered. We find that individuals move to occupations with similar task requirements and that the distance of moves declines with time in the labor market. We also show that task-specific human capital is an important source of individual wage growth, in particular for university graduates. For them, at least 40 percent of overall wage growth over a ten year period can be attributed to task-specific human capital. For the low- and medium-skilled, task-specific human capital accounts for at least 35 and 25 percent of overall wage growth respectively.

Disrupting yourself doesnt have to mean leaving your organization, however. Take IDEO executive Dave Blakely, who has been with the design consultancy for two decades but worked his way up in a decidedly unconventional manner. A software engineer with a masters degree from the University of California at Berkeley, he could have built a successful career in his core area of expertise, perhaps eventually moving to a similar role at another Silicon Valley firm or working his way up to manage technical staff. Instead, Blakely volunteered to become a project manager at IDEO. His peers dismissed the new job as an escape from the rigor and detail of engineering. But the backward move allowed Blakely to broaden his skills and get comfortable with a more diverse group of colleagues, including executives. He started climbing a new ladder and is now head of technology strategy at IDEO. Alex McClung, the health care executive with 15 job changes behind him, has had a similar experience. "The sideways ...

Realistically, changing the system wholesale is a very long-term project. Many decades, if not longer. But meanwhile the case could be made for a kind of transition in the form of a more widespread use of already existing methods that separate the essence of communication of research results from the approbation and assessment mechanisms that journals really are (CADs, Career Advancement Devices). I argue the case for separating informal publication of results and formal, peer-reviewed assessment via journals here: http://blog.scielo.org/en/2015/10/29/science-which-needs-communication-first-careers-which-need-selectivity-later/, and just such separation can produce material financial savings (if Academia indeed wants that) as well as remove the barriers of paywalls without boycotts ...

Unlike Husson, Semelin did not go blind as a child. He grew up completely unaware of his degenerative eye disease which was only discovered during some careers counselling he had in high school. At the age of 16 he was told that his sight would soon start to weaken and that he would go completely blind at an unknown and unspecified point in his life. Semelin is a renowned and well-respected historian and political scientist who is a researcher at the CNRS and a lecturer at Sciences-Po. His successful career might suggest that his story could be interpreted as a typical triumph over tragedy narrative about how he battled to overcome his disability to lead a normal life. But Semelins story is far from being the kind of cloying and self-pitying inspiration porn which some non-disabled people enjoy. Instead he offers a practical, humorous and thoughtful account of how he has come to appreciate the kingdom of the blind in which he now finds himself: ...
