A report on interventional cardiology practice from an extensive survey is presented today at EuroPCR 2018, the annual meeting of the European Association of Percutaneous Cardiovascular Interventions (EAPCI), a branch of the European Society of Cardiology (ESC). The EAPCI White Book is the first systematic data collection on the practice of interventional cardiology, a branch of cardiology which delivers catheter-based (percutaneous) treatment of heart diseases-for example inserting stents to open clogged arteries (called percutaneous coronary intervention, or PCI). A wide spectrum of resource allocation and treatment implementation was reported by countries participating in the 2016 survey. Hospitals equipped with catheterisation laboratories (the operating rooms for catheter-based procedures) ranged from less than 2 to more than 5 per million people. Likewise the number of interventional cardiologists ranged from 10 to more than 25 per million people.

MONDAY, Feb. 24, 2020 (American Heart Association News) -- When the heart suddenly stops beating, each passing moment can mean life or death. That is why emergency health providers and advocates are urging states to develop uniform standards and training for telecommunicator CPR.. A new policy statement from an American Heart Association task force lays out steps for a widespread system for 911 dispatchers to give lifesaving CPR instructions to bystanders over the phone while waiting for first responders to arrive. The report, published Monday in the AHA journal Circulation, highlights the need for physician oversight of the program, emergency telecommunicator training and effective communication among first responders.. Telephone CPR is very important, said Dr. Michael C. Kurz, associate professor of emergency medicine and surgery at the University of Alabama School of Medicine and chair of the task force. It can double or triple survival from out-of-hospital cardiac arrest.. For every ...

While affected individuals are predominantly heterozygous females, males show early lethality. About 50 percent of affected females inherit the gene mutation from their mother and at least 50 percent have a de novo mutation. For women with X-linked PVNH, the risk of passing the mutation to each child is 50 percent. Because of the high rate of prenatal lethality in males, most sons born to women with X-linked PVNH are unaffected. Prenatal diagnosis by molecular genetic testing is possible if the disease-causing mutation has been identified in an affected relative. The periventricular nodules can be visualized by ultrasound examination as early as 24 weeks of gestation, but the sensitivity of this finding is unknown.. To serve as a comprehensive cardiovascular resource for PVNH patients who also frequently have multi-systemic disease, Chen recently founded and become the director of the cardiology clinic for the BrDG program, called C-BrDG (pronounced C-Bridge).. TUESDAY, April 28 (HealthDay News) -- American heart patients who receive their primary care at a community health clinic are less likely to be referred for a consultation with a cardiologist than patients who receive their primary care at a hospital.. This difference is especially true among women, say researchers who reviewed the electronic medical records of 9,761 adult heart patients who received community clinic-based or hospital-based care between 2000 and 2005.. The overall rates for cardiology consultations were 79.6 percent for patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and 90.3 percent for congestive heart failure (CHF) patients, said the researchers from Harvard Medical School and the U.S. National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI).. However, patients seen at community health clinics were less likely (CAD patients 21 percent less, and CHF patients 23 percent less) to receive an initial cardiology consultation than those treated at hospital clinics..
