Clinical electrophysiology is the application of electrophysiology principles to medicine. The two main branches of this discipline are electrotherapy and electrophysiologic testing (EEG, electromyography, etc.) Clinical electrophysiology can be utilized in the study and treatment of various physiological conditions, and most notably in clinical cardiac electrophysiology. Cardiac Electrophysiology (also referred to as clinical cardiac electrophysiology, arrhythmia services, or electrophysiology), is a branch of the medical specialty of clinical cardiology and is concerned with the study and treatment of rhythm disorders of the heart. Through the use of electrophysiological techniques, dissections of the visual system can be made. The use of both electrophysiological information in conjunction with other clinical tests, imaging, and field instrumentation, a deep and comprehensive assessment of the ocular and visual pathways can be made. Alone, electrophysiology can also monitor ocular disease, ...

Biosense-Webster, a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson, produces a cardiac electrophysiology system called CARTO.[4] The system is designed to visualise the real-time calculated position and orientation of a specialised RF ablation catheter within the patients heart in order to minimise radiation exposure during fluoroscopy, increase the accuracy of targeted RF ablation and reacquisition of pacing sites for re-ablation.[5] Its navigation system calculates the position and orientation of the catheter tip, using three known magnetic sources as references. The system uses static magnetic fields that are calibrated and computer controlled. Due to the nature of magnetic fields, the orientation may also be calculated while the tip is stationary. By calculating the strength and orientation of the magnetic fields at a given location, the x,y,z position may be calculated along with the roll, pitch, yaw orientation.[4] ...

Every beat of your heart is an electrical process that causes your coronary muscles to contract. Cardiac electrophysiology is the science of understanding, diagnosing, and treating the electrical activities of the heart. As a descriptive word, Electrophysiology is a medical term. Most patients refer to a cardiac electrophysiologist as an EP or Cardiac EP doctor. EP is an easier name to remember and pronounce. At Cardiac EP we specialize in the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders.. A heart rhythm problem may results from a random event in many cases. Supra-ventricular tachycardia (SVT), lone-AF in a young healthy person, and congenital AV-block are just three examples arrhythmia issues. These hereditary problems have no underlying external factors. At Cardiac EP, we treat patients from the very young, with congenital disease, to the aged whose arrhythmia problems may be the result of other issues.. The hearts rhythm may be affected by environmental factors, both cardiac and ...

Sawhney et al. reported that nurse-led, physician-directed moderate sedation during cardiac electrophysiology procedures is safe (1). All of the patients undergoing cardiac electrophysiological (EP) procedures and cardiac implantable electronic device (CIED) implantation during the last 12 years were moderately sedated. Since this study is a retrospective study, we could not comprehend why all patients were sedated despite the fact that routine sedation during all cardiac EP procedures and all CIED implantation is not recommended ...

Computational models of cardiac electrophysiology have a long history in basic science applications and device design and evaluation, but have significant potential for clinical applications in all areas of cardiovascular medicine, including functional imaging and mapping, drug safety evaluation, disease diagnosis, patient selection, and therapy optimisation or personalisation. For all stakeholders to be confident in model-based clinical decisions, cardiac electrophysiological (CEP) models must be demonstrated to be trustworthy and reliable. Credibility, that is, the belief in the predictive capability, of a computational model is primarily established by performing validation, in which model predictions are compared to experimental or clinical data. However, there are numerous challenges to performing validation for highly complex multi-scale physiological models such as CEP models. As a result, credibility of CEP model predictions is usually founded upon a wide range of distinct factors, including

Two-channel rhythm strip recorded from a patient scheduled for electrophysiology study for palpitations. The onset of the tachycardia occurs after the second QRS and the P wave is noted in the following diastole to be of different morphology than the probable initial sinus P wave. The identification of the P wave during tachycardia is facilitated by comparison with the last QRS in the strip that is not followed by a P wave. Careful measurement with calipers (a critical tool of the electrophysiologist) will illustrate that the onset of the tachycardia does not require PR prolongation. In addition, the cycle length varies and during this, the PR stays constant while the apparent RP varies. These findings are most compatible with an atrial tachycardia. Note that most junctional reentrant tachycardias would require some AV delay at the onset and such variable retrograde conduction would be unusual. This information provides a focused starting point to plan electrophysiology study. ...

Background :Chagas disease is an endemic disease in most Latin American countries. The cardiomyopathy associated with this condition often requires permanent pacing due to bradycardia. The aim of this study was to compare the indications for pacemaker implantation, intraoperative measurements, and long-term follow-up of patients with Chagas cardiomyopathy (ChCM) and ischemic cardiomyopathy (ICM) referred for pacemaker implantation.. Methods : Retrospective study including consecutive patients with ChCM (Group 1) and ICM (Group 2), who underwent pacemaker implantation in a single center.. Results : We analyzed 360 patients. Patients in Group 1 were younger (66.29 ± 7.01 vs 75.3 ± 7.11 years; P = 0.0001) and more often male (72% vs 60%; P = 0.05). Sinus node dysfunction (SND) was more prevalent in Group 1 (70% vs 52%; P = 0.03). Atrioventricular block was less prevalent in Group 1 (30% vs 48%; P = 0.04). No significant differences were found with respect to left ventricular ejection fraction ...
