Comment:. Sections demonstrate two distinct histologic neoplasms: an inverted papilloma and a coexisting verrucous carcinoma. Microscopically, the inverted papilloma comprises less than 10% of the tumor mass. Inverted papillomas are not infrequently associated with malignant tumors, primarily squamous cell carcinoma, and in some instances malignant transformation in an inverted papilloma to carcinoma may be observed. In this case, there is no transitional zone in the sections examined to suggest that the verrucous carcinoma is arising directly from the inverted papilloma. Background: We investigated the immunohistochemical expression of Arp2/3 complex in 88 oral squamous cell carcinomas (OSCCs) and correlated it with the tumor type and grade. Materials and methods: This is a retrospective study of 88 cases of OSCCs (9 verrucous carcinomas, 4 carcinomas in situ, 37 well differentiated OSCCs, 32 moderately differentiated OSCCs, and 6 poorly differentiated OSCCs), stained with mouse monoclonal antibodies for Arp2 and Arp3. Staining was graded according to the extent of positivity by two observers. Results: Arp2 positivity was seen in 79 (89.77%) cases and Arp3 positivity in 78 (88.63%) cases. In positive cases, Arp2 expression was graded as (+) in 12.5%, (++) in 28.4% and (+++) in 48.86% of the cases; Arp3 was graded as (+) in 36.36%, (++) in 30.68% and (+++) in 21.59% of the cases. Conclusion: Expression of Arp2 and Arp3, indicative of the formation of the Arp2/3 complex, was seen in most OSCCs examined. Although no statistically significant correlation was found between

The functional diversity in different cell types is acquired by chromatin modifications, which are established by epigenetic regulatory mechanisms involving DNA methylation, histone acetylation, and miRNAs. Recent evidence indicates that the dysregulation in these processes can result in the development of several diseases, including cancer. 7,12-Dimethylbenz(a)anthrazene (DMBA) is a carcinogen that induces carcinomas within a few weeks of application. Forty-four male hamsters were divided into four groups: DMBA dissolved in paraffin oil (DMBA-PO), DMBA dissolved in olive oil (DMBA-OO), paraffin oil and olive oil. Their mouths were swabbed daily with paraffin oil or extra virgin olive oil alternatively for the first two weeks, during the biweekly application of DMBA at 0.5% diluted in paraffin oil or olive oil for five weeks and daily until the twentieth week. The animals in the DMBA-OO and olive oil groups received an additional diet of mature Picual olives. The DMBA-PO carcinogen effect (35 carcinomas) is 100% and the inhibitory effect 0. The use of olive oil as DMBA solvent and the ad libitum diet with Picual olive has an inhibitory effect of 80%, with only three intraepithelial carcinomas and four verrucous carcinomas occurring and no invasive carcinoma.
