The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service - Columbia River Fisheries Program Office (CRFPO) convened a Carbon Footprint Team in 2013. The goal of this team is to quantify, track, and make recommendations toward reducing the office carbon footprint. To this end, we established a process that involved establishing objectives, meeting regularly, establishing contacts outside of CRFPO to collect information, conducting an energy audit, adopting a carbon footprint calculator, quantifying the office carbon footprint, and developing recommendations to reduce that carbon footprint. The energy audit was conducted by Clark Public Utilities and provided some insight to ways we could easily reduce our carbon footprint. The carbon footprint calculator was adopted from Seattle Climate Partnership, and provided a platform to easily input data so that the office carbon footprint could be quantified. The CRFPO carbon footprint for FY 2013 was approximately 350 metric tons of CO2. Recommendations developed included ways ...

Carbon dioxide equivalent. Carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2-e) is a measure used to convert the masses of each of the greenhouse gases to a mass of CO2 that would give the equivalent global warming potential generally over a 100 year timeframe. Carbon dioxide equivalency thus reflects the time-integrated radiative forcing of a quantity of emissions or rate of greenhouse gas emission. For example, methane has a CO2-e 25 times that of CO2, and nitrous oxide 298 times. Carbon dioxide intensity and carbon dioxide per capita Alternatives to total emissions for measuring a nation?s greenhouse gas emissions. Carbon intensity measures emissions per unit of gross domestic product. Carbon dioxide per capita measures emissions per person. Both measures can be used to look at emission differences between nations. For example, while China has recently taken the lead in total greenhouse gas emissions, its per capita emissions level is far lower than that in most industrial countries. ...
Downloadable (with restrictions)! Analysis of household consumption and its environmental impact remains one of the most important topics in sustainability research. Nevertheless, much past and recent work has focused on domestic national averages, neglecting both the growing importance of international trade on household carbon footprint and the variation between households of different income levels and demographics. Using consumer expenditure surveys and multi-country life cycle assessment techniques, this paper analyzes the global and distributional aspects of American household carbon footprint. We find that due to recently increased international trade, 30% of total US household CO2 impact in 2004 occurred outside the US. Further, households vary considerably in their CO2 responsibilities: at least a factor of ten difference exists between low and high-impact households, with total household income and expenditure being the best predictors of both domestic and international portions of the total
U.S. railroads have touted for decades that they use less fuel than trucks to move freights and now they are adding green into the mix, telling customers they can reduce their carbon footprints, Guardian reports.. Among a growing number of railroad companies running environmentally themed ad, Norfolk Southern released one in May, titled "Too bad we cant all drive a train.". Don Anair of the Union of Concerned Scientists told the Guardian that railroads could play an important role in reducing road congestion and lowering emissions. But he says there is more room for the railway industry to lower their footprint even more by reducing idling and investing more in engines with lower emissions.. While skyrocketing oil-prices has helped the railroad industry to take market share from trucks it still has to overcome the challenge of providing reliable service.. One challenge for the railroads to capitalize on their lower carbon footprint is providing reliable service.. ...

Climate change mitigation requires action in all spheres of society. The role of household consumption is often overlooked. However, 72% of global greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions are related to household consumption, while the rest stem from government consumption and investments. The result from a Finnish study is quite similar: households accounted for 68% of the GHG emissions of domestic final consumption in Finland, whereas government consumption and investments were responsible for the other 32% .. The key question in this report is: How much can a typical Finn decrease ones GHG emissions with consumption decisions? To address this question, we took the average GHG emissions from consumption as a starting point. In Finland in 2010, the average per capita GHG emissions from consumption expenditure was 11.5 tonnes of CO2e. Between 2000 and 2013, the average per capita GHG emissions fluctuated from 9.6 tonnes to 11.8 tonnes. The per capita consumption carbon footprint in Finland is on the high ...

KOKOMO, Ind. - Local churches are cutting down their carbon footprint as part of a statewide initiative to promote "a faith response to climate change.". Hoosier Interfaith Power and Light, an organization committed to promoting environmentally friendly practices and sustainability in religious organizations, announced last week it received a $150,000 grant from the Indiana Office of Energy Development. The only faith-based organization to apply for the grant, H-IPL, plans to use the grant to install solar panels and cut energy uses in six central Indiana churches by 25 percent to 40 percent. Though none of the congregations are in Kokomo, the Howard County Ministerial Association has joined the H-IPL in promoting environmental friendliness and eventually hold a workshop for area churches.. "(Churches) use a lot of energy and it turns out its really easy to cut the energy they use. Just turning the thermostat way down in the winter when nobodys in the building can save a huge amount," said ...

Compared to the CO2 emissions of individual countries this volume, which is the estimate produced by the FAOs Food wastage footprint - impacts on natural resources, 2013 ranks third among the worlds biggest greenhouse gas emitters after China and the USA.. What this means in concrete terms is that the greenhouse gas associated with the production, processing, transport and storage of all non-consumed food corresponds to roughly half of what both China and the USA emit into the atmosphere each year, according to SAVE FOOD, a joint initiative of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) and Messe Düsseldorf GmbH.. For Germany this figure stands at approximately one giga ton - less than one third of all global emissions caused by food loss and waste.. By comparison the with 3.3 giga tons (billion tons) of food waste emissions, the greenhouse gas emissions associated with road traffic in all of the USA was 1.5 giga tons in 2010.. Broken down into food categories, cereals ...
The recent Garnaut report states that "the solutions to the climate change challenge must be found in removing the links between economic activity and greenhouse gas emissions." In order to successfully mitigate climate change impacts on both the environment and the economy, we need to go a step further and replace those links with avenues for sustainable economic activity. This can effectively begin with innovative designs for improving efficiency in energy production and usage.. Rather than compensating mining companies that are vulnerable to the new emissions trading scheme, the pledged compensation should be used to train employees of these companies with skills that will help them develop innovative designs for efficient energy usage to the commercialisation level. These high emission companies should begin investing in new technologies which could eventually be traded instead of coal to countries like China, in order to spread the improvements in carbon emissions to a global scale. Of ...
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Results from studies evaluating the sustainability of diets combining environmental and nutritional aspects have been diverse; thus, greenhouse gas emissions (that is, carbon footprint (CF)) of diets in line with dietary recommendations in free-living individuals warrants further examination. Here, changes in dietary CF related to changes in food choice during a weight loss trial among lactating women who received a 12-week diet intervention based on the Nordic Nutrition Recommendations (NNR) 2004 were analyzed. The objective of this study was to examine if a diet intervention based on NNR 2004 results in reduced dietary CF. SUBJECTS/METHODS: Changes in dietary CF were analyzed among 61 lactating women participating in a weight loss trial. Food intake data from 4-day weighed diet records and results from life cycle analyses were used to examine changes in dietary CF across eight food groups during the intervention, specified in the unit carbon dioxide equivalent ...
Throughout the month of August, new heat recovery glycol coils were installed atop the building that is home to the Department of Chemistry. The $900,000 project, which is part of a larger comprehensive energy conservation program (ESCo) with Honeywell, will help reduce the universitys energy consumption and costs, and mitigate campus greenhouse gas emissions. The project is a massive undertaking, requiring heavy cranes to lift the equipment so it could be installed. The payoff is expected to be quick, however, with an estimated energy savings of close to $100,000 per year. The reason for the big savings is that chemistry labs - there are 170 fume hoods in Chernoff Hall - require the air to be replaced every 15 minutes in order to prevent any buildup of fumes from projects and experiments, as well as maintaining temperature levels that are vital for work with solvents. In contrast, a typical building on campus will see its air replaced every one or two hours.. The project was developed by the ...
Oregon would tax your carbon footprint - but possibly cut other taxes under proposals presented to the Northwest Power and Conservation Council Wednesday.. The states Global Warming Commission chair Angus Duncan praised the power council for developing a plan with a small carbon footprint. But he says the council, and taxpayers, have to do more to help Oregon reach its lofty goals. Duncan says thats why the commission wants lawmakers to tax carbon emissions.. "What we proposed and will be taking to our legislature is whether we could progressively substitute taxes that ignore carbon for taxes that would acknowledge carbon - but on balance, are revenue neutral," Duncan said.. For example, Duncan suggests replacing the gas tax with two other revenue ideas. One is to have everyone pay a flat fee for road use. The second would tax drivers carbon emissions. Duncan says hed also advocate moving away from taxes based on property value. Instead, hed tax property owners based on a buildings energy ...
