United States Patent US. Cl. 260-132 8 Claims ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An ashless dispersant for lubricants which is made by reacting carbon disulfide or carbon disulfide and an alkali metal hydroxide with a Mannich condensation product. BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION It has been known for many years that, with use, hydrocarbon lubricating oils deteriorate and form sludge, varnish, and corrosive substances that attack the surfaces which these oils are supposed to protect. Dispersants are blended with the oils to suspend the sludge and varnish formers, and inhibitors are added to the oils to prevent oxidation and counteract the corrosive substances. The dispersants and inhibitors should be compatible, and, preferably, they should enhance each others performance. Illustrative of prior art dispersonts is US. Pat. No. 3,256,185. This patent portrays a need for improved dispersants, and disclose dispersants formed by the reaction between an alklylene polyamine, carbon disulfide, and a hydrocarbon ...
Exposure to carbon disulfide can occur by breathing it in the air and by drinking water or eating foods that contain it. Breathing very high levels can be life threatening because of its effects on the nervous system. Breathing low levels for long periods may result in headaches, tiredness, trouble sleeping, and slight changes in the nerves. Carbon disulfide has been found in at least 210 of the 1,430 National Priorities List sites identified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
We investigated past working exposure to CS2 characteristics from investigable 633 ex-workers identified as CS2 poisoning-related occupational diseases including cumulative CS2 exposure index. Furthermore, we studied the prevalence of their major chronic diseases associated with CS2 poisoning recently after many years. Comparing work environment measurement data reported in the 1991-1992, these values were similar to them. After the subjects were identified as CS2 poisoning-related occupational diseases, there are subjects over 70 years of average age with chronic diseases. Disorders of the nervous system and sensory organs, hypertension, psychoneurotic disorder, cerebrovascular disease, diabetes, coronary artery disease, and arrhythmia are the descending order of the prevalence for their chronic diseases.. In our study, there were several advantages to the survey method. We used an evidence-based approach to estimate past exposure to CS2 and to examine the presence or absence of chronic ...

Confinement to the rotational plane is characterized by , cos2Ѳ2D , which is the average value of the cosine of the angle between the probe polarization and the rotational ion velocity vector projected onto the detector screen. By observing how , cos2Ѳ2D , evolves in time after the centrifuge pulse is gone, inferences about the coupling strength of helium to the superrotor can be made. If helium couples strongly to the rotor then , cos2Ѳ2D , is expected to be low and decay quickly. If coupling is weak then , cos2Ѳ2D , is high and lasts for a long time. This is measured for carbon disulfide doped droplets and the evolution of , cos2Ѳ2D , is presented, which is an exciting first step in understanding how the rotation dynamics of a molecule can probe the superfluid behaviour of the nanodroplets.. ...

The results of an experimental investigation of a new geometry for producing phase conjugation by Brillouin-enhanced four-wave mixing are presented. In this geometry, the four-wave mixing medium is carbon disulfide, and the backward-going pump wave is created from the transmitted forward-going pump wave by stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in glycerol. The two pump waves are hence phase conjugates of each other, and the quality of the phase-conjugation process is not degraded even by the use of an aberrated pump wave. The probe wave is created by SBS in carbon disulfide, which has a Brillouin frequency half that of glycerol, and the conjugate wave is therefore generated at the same frequency as the probe. Since the pump and signal waves differ in frequency by the Brillouin frequency of the carbon disulfide four-wave mixing medium, high reflectivities (approximately 2000%) are obtained as a result of Brillouin resonance enhancement.. © 1987 Optical Society of America. article{0e81fc50-5659-446c-9bfd-c697cf571066, abstract = {Objectives Workers in the rubber industry are exposed to a complex mixture of hazardous substances and have increased risk of developing several diseases. However, there is no up to date survey examining the exposure in the Swedish rubber industry. One of the toxic compounds in the industry is carbon disulfide (CS2), which is biotransformed to 2-thiothiazolidine- 4carboxylic acid (TTCA). TTCA is used as a biomarker of CS2 exposure, but there seem to exist inter- and intraindividual variability; which could partly be due to genetic variation. The aim of the study was to determine TTCA levels and the modifying effects of glutathione-related genes in a group of Swedish rubber workers. Methods Urine was collected from both exposed workers and controls during the last 4 h of the work shift. The level of TTCA in urine was analyzed by liquid chromatograpy tandem mass spectrometry. The reaction mixture is cooled to 5-10° in an ice-salt bath (Note 3), and, with continued stirring, a solution of 31.7 g. (21.3 ml., 0.250 mole) of oxalyl chloride in 200 ml. of dry carbon disulfide is added through the dropping funnel in the course of 20 minutes. After the addition is complete, the thick black reaction mixture is allowed to warm to room temperature, refluxed for 1 hour, and then cooled to 0-5° in an ice bath. The mixture is stirred throughout these steps. One hundred grams of chipped ice is added with stirring, followed by 400 ml. of cold water. Steam is then passed into the flask until the carbon disulfide and unreacted dimethylaniline are removed, and the green-black aluminum complex is decomposed to a mixture of a green solid and a blue solid; this requires 1-2 hours (Note 4). The mixture is cooled to 50°, and the solid, which is principally 4,4-bis(dimethylamino)benzil, is collected on a Büchner funnel. In order to remove the major part of the impurity, which is ...
Control of rodent infestations using acute-rodenticide baiting is frequently fraught with difficulties involving bait-shyness and neophobic effects. To simulate some of the parameters encountered in baiting situations, pre-weighed quantities of Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) standard challenge bait mixture were used as a highly palatable bait base to induce feeding without the need for food deprivation in Wistar-strain laboratory albino rats. Individual animals were tested for attractant effects of 3 odors (rat urine, preputial gland extract, and carbon disulfide) and a natural repellent odor (coyote urine) in an observation area constructed of clear plastic panels containing a central alley and 2 choice compartments. Three measures of rat preference - the bait intake levels of challenge bait, arena compartment choice, and time expended in each compartment - suggested that the carbon disulfide at 10 ppm had an attractant effect. None of the other tested odors produced consistent effects on these

Viscose Bamboo Rayon.. This process requires considerable energy and chemical input. Bamboo is first crushed, then soaked in a sodium hydroxide solution, pressed, dried and crushed again. Carbon disulfide is added to create a gel, which is again treated with sodium hydroxide, before being pressed through narrow nozzles into sulfuric acid to create threads, where it hardens and is finally spun and woven. The end fabric is soft, drapes similarly to silk, and is well suited to garment manufacturing. However, the materials functionality often comes with hidden costs such as worker illness from chemical exposure, and negative effects on the environment. One of the most significant environmental effects is wastewater laden with a large variety of chemicals being freely discharged during the manufacturing process.. Lyocell Bamboo Rayon. An alternative rayon fabric with limited environmental impacts, lyocell rayon is produced in a closed-loop viscose process which utilizes a non-toxic solution (amine ...

The higher the ratio of cellulose to combined sulfur, the lower the solubility of the cellulose xanthate. The xanthate is dissolved in aqueous sodium hydroxide (typically 2-5% w/w) and allowed to depolymerize to a desired extent, indicated by the solutions viscosity. The rate of depolymerization (ripening or maturing) depends on temperature and is affected by the presence of various inorganic and organic additives, such as metal oxides and hydroxides.[3] Air also affects the ripening process since oxygen causes depolymerization.[4] Rayon fiber is produced from the ripened solutions by treatment with a mineral acid, such as sulfuric acid. In this step, the xanthate groups are hydrolyzed to regenerate cellulose and release dithiocarbonic acid that later decomposes to carbon disulfide and water:[5] ...
ABSTRACT. A simple catalyst-free, and highly regioselective approach to 2-hydroxyalkyl dithiocar bamates is described which involves a one-pot reaction of various amines and carbon disulfide,CS2, with epoxides in ethanol at room temperature.. 1. Introduction. The formation of carbon-sulfur bond, especially under a green and safe condition, is an important transformation in organic synthesis. Sulfur containing compounds are found in many products of biological [1-4] and medical [5-7] relevance as well as in commercial drugs [8].. Dithiocarbamates are a class of fungicides extensively used worldwide on a range of crops mainly due to their efficiency in controlling plant fungal diseases and relatively low mammalian acute toxicity [9]. They have also received much attention due to their wide utility as potent anticancer agents [10,11] and cell apoptosis inhibitors [12-14]. Dithiocarbamates have found applications in the rubber industry as vulcanization accelerators [15], in controlled radical ...
Foliage has an OK crown. It gets a bit disorganized at the very end. So if any drones photograph the top of my head maybe Ill deny I knit it. Overall its a beautiful hat and a well-crafted pattern.. Knitting with Sueno set me to wondering about how they manage to get rayon from bamboo. Generally, rayon production of any kind isnt a pretty picture. Its all chemically reshaped cellulose. Bamboo will do as well as wood pulp to produce rayon. And since bamboo grows fast its likely a more ecologically sensitive choice if you want to end up with rayon. But both processes create carbon disulfide as a byproduct. Thats very nasty stuff. Especially if anyone inhales the fumes. Im hoping that the workers who have to cook up this stuff are adequately protected.. This next orange hat is Jennifer Myricks Skywalk. I knit mine in Plymouth Yarns Worsted Merino Superwash.. ...
The cellulosic component of the wood is unaffected by this treatment, but the cementing material called lignin, which is present in the wood, is converted into its sulphonated compound which is soluble in water. This can be washed off, thereby purifying the remaining cellulose. This cellulose is treated with excess of water. After this it is treated with a bleaching agent (sod hypochlorite) and finally converted into paper boards or sheets. This is called wood pulp, which is normally purchased by the manufacturers of viscose rayon ...
Image: VisitSweden/Flickr. We could write a book about greenwashing in the clothing industry, but well stick with three prominent examples:. 1. Back in 2002, Cargill, the worlds biggest producer of corn, announced a revolutionary new fleece material made from corn sugar, not the traditional petroleum. The catch: Cargill, which produces genetically modified corn, makes the fleece out of its own frankenfood crops. No wonder it touted the new fleece as a green alternative-it had money written all over it. Organic clothing retailer Patagonia violently pulled out of a partnership with Cargill after finding out about its affinity with woven mutant corn. 2. In an unrelated clothing coup last year, the FTC charged bamboo clothing manufacturers with making false green claims. The manufacturers advertised their rayon clothing as bamboo fiber clothing (rayon consists of fibers processed with toxic carbon disulfide. It is bamboo fibers drug-addled step-cousin). They also made suspicious claims about ...
Carbon subsulfide is an inorganic chemical compound with the formula C3S2. This deep red liquid is immiscible with water but soluble in organic solvents. It readily polymerizes at room temperature to form a hard black solid. C3S2 was discovered by Béla Lengyel, who assigned it an unsymmetrical structure. Later, infrared and Raman spectroscopy showed that the structure is symmetrical with a D∞h point group symmetry, i.e. S=C=C=C=S. This compound is analogous to carbon suboxide whose structure is O=C=C=C=O. Lengyel first synthesized this compound by passing carbon disulfide (CS2) vapor through an electric arc with carbon electrodes. This treatment produced a black solution that after filtration and evaporation gave a cherry-red liquid. He determined the molecular mass by cryoscopy. Later preparations of C3S2 include thermolysis of a stream of CS2 in a quartz tube heated to 900 to 1100 °C as well as flash vacuum pyrolysis (FVP) of 1,2-dithiole-3-thiones. Among its few known reactions, C3S2 ...
Quinoline, hygroscopic, yellowish oily liquid, is an aromatic nitrogen compound characterized by a double-ring structure contains a benzene and a pyridine. (Pyridine is a ring structure compound of five carbon atoms with a nitrogen atom). These two rings are fused at two adjacent carbon atoms. Quinoline itself is the simplest member of the quinoline. It can be prepared by the distillation of coal tar or by synthesis from aniline. It is soluble in water as well as in alcohol, ether, and carbon disulfide. Isoquinoline differs from quinoline in nitrogen position. Quinoline family compounds are widely used as a parent compound to make drugs (especially anti-malarial medicines), fungicides, biocides, alkaloids, dyes, rubber chemicals and flavoring agents. They have antiseptic, antipyretic, and antiperiodic properties. They are also used as catalyst, corrosion inhibitor, preservative, and as solvent for resins and terpenes. They are used in transition-metal complex catalyst chemistry for uniform ...
This study describes a novel model of cancer. Cancer is caused, according to this model, by two toxic molecules, COF2 (carbonyl fluoride) and CS2 (carbon disulfide). COF2 acts as a catalyst and produces CS2. CS2 acts as a catalyst and produces COF2. Hence, the molecules COF2 and CS2 have the ability to reproduce each other, i.e. to create a chain reaction where COF2 and CS2 are multiplied. COF2 and CS2 are toxic. It is proposed that long-term cell exposure to COF2 and CS2 may disturb cell apoptosis and cause uncontrolled cell growth, i.e. cancer. Consequently, cancer is caused by a disease causing mechanism or agent and not by a pathogen. However, cancer can be initiated by e.g. a bacteria or virus that contains the molecules COF2 and CS2, wherein these molecules start a chain reaction producing COF2 and CS2 in the infected area and where the result can be cancer. The study describes why Fe2O3 (iron (III) oxide) may have a therapeutic effect on cancer.

These include shift work, long work hours, and chemical (e.g., carbon disulfide, nitrate esters, carbon monoxide, methylene chloride, solvents), physical (e.g., cold, heat, noise, passive smoking, sedentary work) and psychosocial conditions. The most consistent evidence is provided by sources of psychosocial stress at work. The evidence strongly suggests a causal association between job strain (a combination of high psychological demands and low job decision latitude, or low job control) and hypertension and CVD. Low decision latitude is also
A modified procedure was developed for the measurement of the effective air exchange rate, which represents the relationship between the pollutants emitted from indoor sources and the residents level of exposure, by placing the dosers of tracer gas at locations that resemble indoor emission sources. To measure the 24-h-average effective air exchange rates in future surveys based on this procedure, a low-cost, easy-to-use perfluorocarbon tracer (PFT) doser with a stable dosing rate was developed by using double glass vials, a needle, a polyethylene-sintered filter, and a diffusion tube. Carbon molecular sieve cartridges and carbon disulfide (CS2) were used for passive sampling and extraction of the tracer gas, respectively. Recovery efficiencies, sampling rates, and lower detection limits for 24-h sampling of hexafluorobenzene, octafluorotoluene, and perfluoroallylbenzene were 40% ± 3%, 72% ± 5%, and 84% ± 6%; 10.5 ± 1.1, 14.4 ± 1.4, and 12.2 ± 0.49 mL min−1; and 0.20, 0.17, and 0.26 μg m-3,

I bet the residents of Dish dont agree that natural gas is the clean source of energy of the future. They recently hired a company to study the air quality in their town after numerous complaints about odor and noise. Wolf Eagle Environmental, a company located in Flower Mound, did the study and their findings were shocking. They found high levels of 15 chemicals at five of seven test sites. These chemicals included benzene, xylene, naphthalene and carbon disulfide. The levels of these chemicals were 10 times the recommended level for short-term exposure. Some were high enough to be considered an immediate danger. Below is a little info from the OSHA site on these chemicals.. Benzene: http://www.osha.gov/SLTC/benzene/ With exposures from less than five years to more than 30 years, individuals have developed, and died from, leukemia. Long-term exposure may affect bone marrow and blood production. Short-term exposure to high levels of benzene can cause drowsiness, dizziness, unconsciousness, ...
0005]Accordingly, a device is needed to extract low levels (trace levels) of volatile, semi-volatile, and non-volatile compounds from the oral cavity, including breath and saliva, for the purpose of advancing the field of breath metabolomics. Such a device would also be useful in dental, food and flavor sciences. For example, in dental science, oral health may be assessed by sampling metabolites present in the saliva and breath. Common maladies such as gum health may be diagnosed based on the presence and concentration of known metabolites generated by infection including compounds associated with foul odor such as carbon disulfide, methyl mercaptan, and dimethyl sulfide. In food and flavor sciences, flavor and taste are known as chemosenses, meaning the sense of taste and smell (flavors, tastes and fragrances) are the brains interpretation of signals generated by interactions of chemicals (from foods and fragrances) with receptors in the mouth and nose. By detecting and measuring these ...

Shungite (Sh) are the black Precambrian rocks of Karelia (Russia) where the first natural occurrence of fullerenes was found. Carbon-rich Sh - a natural composite with a submicronic degree of uniformity in distribution carbon and mineral components that allows to consider them as metastable solid solutions. Presence of fullerenes and aluminosilicate components in such Sh supposes a wide spectrum of catalytic transformations of substance. Various types of the substance organization during concentrating of the water - carbon disulfide shungite-extracts are considered. The organization of fullerene-like quasi-crystall particles from icosahedral composite molecules of type a core C60 - shell S42 structure is shown in [1]. At a final stage of such particle origin the stress crack are formed and the recrystallization of substance as a film polycrystal (the upper optical micrograph) by account of high concentration CS2 inside a shell is possible.. In this experiment, I recrystallized garden sulfur (90% pure) to make pure sulfur crystals that gleam in the light and are a light yellow color. First, I acquired a solvent for sulfur. Since sulfur dissolves well in toluene, xylene, and carbon disulfide, I picked the most common option--xylene. My xylene came from paint thinner (it listed xylene as an component). To separate the xylene from the methanol and acetone also in the paint thinner, I mixed equal volumes of water and paint thinner and vigorously shook. This should be done outside, as the vapors are unhealthy. I poured the mixture into a graduated cylinder and let it settle for 15 minutes. The xylene, which is insoluble in water, floated at the top, while the acetone and methanol remained in the water layer. I syringed off the xylene and ended up with ~45mL from three 50mL batches of paint thinner ...

A compound is a substance composed of two or more elements chemically combined with each other. Historically, the distinction between compounds and mixtures was often unclear. Today, however, the two can be distinguished from each other on the basis of three primary criteria. First, compounds have constant and definite compositions, while mixtures may exist in virtually any proportion. A sample of water always consists of 88.9% oxygen and 11.1% hydrogen by weight. However, a mixture of hydrogen and oxygen gases can have any composition whatsoever.. Second, the elements that make up a compound lose their characteristic elemental properties when they become part of the compound, while the elements that make up a mixture retain those properties. In a mixture of iron and sulfur, for example, black iron granules and yellow sulfur crystals can often be recognized. Also, the iron can be extracted from the mixture by means of a magnet, or the sulfur can be dissolved out with carbon disulfide. One part ...
Sulfur is pale yellow, odorless, brittle solid, which is insoluble in water but soluble in carbon disulfide. In every state, whether gas, liquid or solid, elemental sulfur occurs in more than one allotropic form or modification; these present a confusing multitude of forms whose relations are not yet fully understood.. In 1975, University of Pennsylvania scientists reported synthesis of polymeric sulfur nitride, which has the properties of a metal, although it contains no metal atoms. The material has unusual optical and electrical properties.. High-purity sulfur is commercially available in purities of 99.999+%.. Amorphous or plastic sulfur is obtained by fast cooling of the crystalline form. X-ray studies indicate that amorphous sulfur may have a helical structure with eight atoms per spiral. Crystalline sulfur seems to be made of rings, each containing eight sulfur atoms, which fit together to give a normal X-ray pattern.. ...
CONCLUSIONS 1.) The refinery database that has been generated shows that refinery fuel gas (RFG) varies widely in inorganic, organic and sulfur content. 2.) The existing refinery analytical techniques are not capable of accurately measuring all of the sulfur compounds in RFG at the low levels that are now of interest in the field. 3.) Newly developed analytical methods are indicating that significant levels of sulfur species other than HzS, such as Carbonyl Sulfide (COS), Carbon Disulfide (CSz), Dimethyl Disulfide (DMDS) and Mercaptans (RSHs) are present in RFG streams. 4.) Existing refinery amine systems typically remove 99.5 + % of the inlet HzS. The average sulfur content in the existing RFG database is 180-250 ppmv, based on the updated measurement techniques. 5.) The different sulfur removal processes that were investigated vary considerably in their abilities to remove specific sulfur compounds. 6.) No praYeD single technology was identified that can reduoo typical RFGs to 40 ppmv ...
Intramolecular carbon, hydrogen, and sulfur isotope ratios were measured on a homologous series of organic sulfonic acids discovered in the Murchison meteorite. Mass-independent sulfur isotope fractionations were observed along with high deuterium/hydrogen ratios. The deuterium enrichments indicate formation of the hydrocarbon portion of these compounds in a low-temperature environment that is consistent with that of interstellar clouds. Sulfur-33 enrichments observed in methanesulfonic acid could have resulted from gas-phase ultraviolet irradiation of a precursor, carbon disulfide. The source of the sulfonic acid precursors may have been the reactive interstellar molecule carbon monosulfide. ...

We present an experimental and theoretical study of resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) in the carbon disulphide CS 2 molecule near the sulfur K-absorption edge. We observe a strong evolution of the RIXS spectral profile with the excitation energy tuned below the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) absorption resonance. The reason for this is twofold. Reducing the photon energy in the vicinity of the LUMO absorption resonance leads to a relative suppression of the LUMO contribution with respect to the emission signal from the higher unoccupied molecular orbitals, which results in the modulation of the total RIXS profile. At even larger negative photon-energy detuning from the resonance, the excitation-energy dependence of the RIXS profile is dominated by the onset of electron dynamics triggered by a coherent excitation of multiple electronic states. Furthermore, our study demonstrates that in the hard x-ray regime, localization of the S 1s core hole occurs in CS2 during the RIXS ...

The cytochrome P450 enzyme CYP2E1 occurs in many parts of the human body (skin, nose, heart, brain, lung, liver, kidney etc.), but is most concentrated in the human liver. It makes up only about 7% of the total P450 enzymes in the liver.[16]. CYP2E1 accounts for approximately 7% of total CYP450 in the human liver.. Many sulphur-containing agents block this enzyme, such as carbon disulphide, diethyldithiocarbamate, and disulfiram.[16]. ...
The invention relates to a nonwoven highloft flame barrier well suited for use in mattress, upholstered furniture and other end use applications where a highloft nonwoven material is desired for flame barrier purposes. A preferred nonwoven highloft flame barrier of the invention comprises a blend of fibers, that are inherently fire resistant and essentially nonshrinking to direct flame, with melamine fibers being preferred either alone or in conjunction with, for example, viscose rayon based fibers, fibers extruded from polymers made with halogenated monomers and preferably low-melt binder fibers, which are thermally activated in a highloft manufacturing process to provide low bulk density, resiliency and insulation properties in the end use application. The preferred fiber blends are designed to withstand extended periods of time exposed to open flame with minimal shrinkage of the char barrier, thereby preventing a flames from

First of all, we must distinguish between cellulitis and fatty deposits.. Cellulitis is a pathology of the tissues which affects 90% of women and appears as an alteration of the skins surface that resembles the skin of an orange. Fatty deposits are, instead, localized fat accumulations in various parts of the body.. The main causes of cellulitis are hormonal disfunctions and poor circulation, given the particular structure of the venous system in womens lower legs. Several factors can aggravate the situation: smoking, oral contraceptives, poor diet and obesity, sedentary life-style.. There are three phases to cellulitis. In phase one, there is a slight edema under the skin and congested veins. In phase two, the substrate of the skin is poorly oxygenated and therefore thickens, causing the orange peel effect; in the third, fat nodules appear under the skin. Cellulitis will not disappear completely, but it can be improved. It is possible to go from phase two to phase one but there is no ...

Rayon is a man-made fiber that is very durable and can make lovely, light formal wear. One problem with synthetic fibers is that some are prone to wrinkles, but the wrinkles are difficult to remove since the fibers melt at higher temperatures. Some cleaners will attempt to remove wrinkles from rayon by using a low-temperature steam iron, but you can also work on the problem at home.. ...
