The rose seeds can be planted right away if you have harvested them as late as November, December or January (in Southern California) or early spring after danger of frosts in your area. Place the rose seeds about one-half inch deep in a very light mixture of 50% sterile potting soil and 50% vermiculite. Some rose hybridizers use Sunshine Mix #4. You can use small pots or shallow trays to plant your seeds, whatever works for the space you have, as long as they have good drainage. Nursery flats work well for this. Lightly dust the rose seeds with RooTone or Captan before covering with soil. And then dust the top of the soil again, which will hopefully help to prevent damp-off (a disease which kills young rose seedlings). I transplant the seedlings at this point into the 4x6 plastic flats used by nursery men for bedding plants. The seedlings are planted on 1 centers in rows one inch apart using a mixture of fine leaf mold and peat. This mixture is porous and the small seedlings seem to start out fast. The little plants are watered in when they are planted and the flats are covered for one or two days to avoid shock. Again, Captan is used if needed. After one to two months, the seedlings are transplanted again into regular cedar flats on two or 2½ centers in rows 2 to 2½ apart. I use the same mixture of leaf mold and peat moss, watering the plants in and at this time using Millers Booster Powder either added to the soil mixture or in the water used to water the plants in. I try to get the flats into a lath house quite early, to get the largest plants possible by fall as the larger the plants the better the chances of them surviving their first winter. An algorithm developed to estimate pesticide exposure intensity for use in epidemiologic analyses was revised based on data from two exposure monitoring studies. In the first study, we estimated relative exposure intensity based on the results of measurements taken during the application of the herbicide 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) (n = 88) and the insecticide chlorpyrifos (n = 17). Modifications to the algorithm weighting factors were based on geometric means (GM) of post-application urine concentrations for applicators grouped by application method and use of chemically-resistant (CR) gloves. We compared the standard chlorothalonil/captan program with programs utilizing micronized (very fine particles) sulfur exclusively. (1) focus on the biopesticidal uses of this bacterium in agriculture. By virtue of its ability to antagonize a number of soilborne plant pathogens, B. cepacia is an attractive natural alternative to currently used chemical pesticides, such as captan, mancozeb, and metalaxyl. The replacement of these highly toxic agents, which are among the mainstays of crop protection chemicals, by safer products is a laudable goal. However, despite being nonpathogenic to healthy humans (and thus classified as a Biosafety Level 1 species), B. cepacia can cause life-threatening pulmonary infection in persons with cystic fibrosis. We present an efficient and simple, metal-free and solvent-free silica gel-promoted synthesis of functionalized conjugated dienes by sequential aza-Michael/Michael reactions starting from commercially available primary amines and propiolic esters.
