AU - Lu, Hanzhang. AU - Peng, Shin Lei. PY - 2018/3/1. Y1 - 2018/3/1. N2 - Given the known vascular effects of cannabis, this study examined the neurophysiological factors that may affect studies of brain activity in cannabis users. We conducted a systematic evaluation in 72 h abstinent, chronic cannabis users (N=74) and nonusing controls (N=101) to determine the association between prolonged cannabis use and the following neurophysiological indicators: (1) global and regional resting cerebral blood flow (CBF), (2) oxygen extraction fraction (OEF), and (3) cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen (CMRO 2). We found that cannabis users had greater global OEF and CMRO 2 compared with nonusers. Regionally, we found higher CBF in the right pallidum/putamen of the cannabis users compared with nonusers. Global resting CBF and ...
Cannabis use disorders are an important public health problem in the United States, but no effective pharmacotherapies are available to treat these disorders. People with schizophrenia are more likely than healthy people to abuse cannabis. Cannabis use may worsen clinical outcomes in this group, making the identification of pharmacotherapy to treat cannabis dependence in those with schizophrenia important. The investigators intend to test the combination of dronabinol, a cannabinoid agonist, and the α2-adrenergic agonist clonidine, for cannabis dependence in subjects with schizophrenia. The combination of dronabinol and clonidine may alleviate cannabis withdrawal symptoms while allowing treatment-seeking outpatients to benefit from medical management (MM) sessions when they are trying to stop using cannabis. The investigators propose to assess the relationship of dronabinol and clonidine, when added to MM, on cannabis use patterns in cannabis-dependent patients with schizophrenia.. Hypothesis: ...

Abstract Objective: Cannabis use is associated with a younger age at onset of psychosis, an indicator of poor prognosis, but better cognitive function, a positive prognostic indicator. We aimed to clarify the role of age at onset and cognition on outcomes in cannabis users with first-episode schizophrenia as well as the effect of cannabis dose and cessation of use. Methods: Ninety-nine patients without alcohol or substance abuse other than cannabis were divided into lifetime users and never-users of cannabis and compared on measures of premorbid function, cognition, and clinical outcome. Results: Cannabis users demonstrated better cognition at psychosis onset, which was explained by higher premorbid IQ. They also showed better social function and neither measure changed over the subsequent 15 months. Cannabis users had an earlier age at onset of psychosis, and there was a strong linear relationship between age at first cannabis use and age at onset of both prodromal and psychotic symptoms. ...
Marketing Cannabidiol (CBD) in the EU has become more complex and, in some cases, is subject to national restrictions. Shops selling products containing Cannabidiol (CBD) are popping-up across Europe drawing more and more attention on the legality, write Katia Merten-Lentz and Manon Ombredane of international law firm Keller & Heckman. Cannabis sativa L is a well-known plant made up of more than 480 compounds, including over 100 cannabinoids composed of both psychoactive and non-psychoactive compounds including CBD. CBD contained in food products like tinctures is often derived from the industrial hemp variety cannabis sativa L. which contains low level of Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) (|0,2%). Setting aside the question of the classification of cannabis under International Drug Control Conventions and the possible safety issue related to the presence of THC, food containing CBD must - as any other foodstuff - comply with the food legislation. This includes Regulation (EU) 2015/2283 on
Persistent cannabis use over 20 y was associated with neuropsychological decline, and greater decline was evident for more persistent users. This effect was concentrated among adolescent-onset cannabis users, a finding consistent with results of several studies showing executive functioning or verbal IQ deficits among adolescent-onset but not adult-onset chronic cannabis users (8, 10, 14, 15), as well as studies showing impairment of learning, memory, and executive functions in samples of adolescent cannabis users (11⇓-13, 32).. The present study advances knowledge in five ways. First, by investigating the association between persistent cannabis use and neuropsychological functioning prospectively, we ruled out premorbid neuropsychological deficit as an explanation of the link between persistent cannabis use and neuropsychological impairment occurring after persistent use. Second, we showed that the impairment was global and detectable across five domains of neuropsychological functioning. ...
A high prevalence of cannabis use disorder has been reported in subjects suffering from schizophrenia, fuelling intense debate about whether schizophrenia with pre-onset cannabis use disorder may be a distinct entity with specific features or whether cannabis use disorder can precipitate schizophrenia in genetically vulnerable subjects. We retrospectively assessed schizophrenia subjects with and without pre-onset cannabis use disorder on the basis of their clinical features, assessed categorically and dimensionally with the operational criteria checklist for psychotic illnesses (OCCPI). We also investigated whether the two groups could be differentiated on the basis of a history of psychiatric disorders in first-degree relatives. A principal component factor analysis of the OCCPI items was used to identify specific symptom dimensions. The relationships between symptom dimensions and cannabis status were analysed by point-biserial correlation analysis to control for sex and age at time of the
A new Washington law has school districts across the state coming up with new marijuana measures. The law requires school districts to allow students with prescriptions to receive medical marijuana on campus from a parent. The Mukilteo School District is one of the first in the state to create and implement a policy regarding medical marijuana for students after the new law went into effect in July. So how does their policy work? The Mukilteo School District tells us parents have to put in a request with their students school administration and then prove that their child is a medical marijuana patient. As part of the new state law, smoking or inhaling marijuana is not allowed. However, parents will be able to come to the school and give their students medical marijuana products in a discreet location. The school district will not handle or store the marijuana medication at any point. Mukilteo School District officials say their goal is to make sure their students medical needs are met in a safe ...
There are both male cannabis plants and female cannabis plants. Because an unpollinated female plant produces far greater concentrations of drug substances than a male plant, these unpollinated females are cultivated for medicinal use. The cannabis plant concentrates its medicine within the female flower clusters. Each flower consists of a curled single leaf known as a calyx. Each calyx is covered with vast numbers of tiny hair-like gland cells called trichomes.. Under magnification, a trichome resembles a golfball sitting atop a tee. The ball is the trichomes resin head, a waxy pillow of oils filled from secretory cells in the trichomes tip. When these delicate resin heads rupture, they release the intense aromatic chemicals called terpenes that are associated with the distinctive smell of cannabis, while cannabinoids such as THC are odorless. The resin heads contain the most medically interesting chemicals produced by the cannabis plant, including cannabinoids and terpenes. Both cannabinoids ...
Here is the appended abstract taken from our CBD supplier, Nuleaf, telling you about our CBD origins for our Carolyns Facial Fitness, cbd Cream. About CBD Oil. What is CBD?. Cannabidiol (CBD) is a naturally-occurring constituent of industrial hemp (cannabis sativa) plants. It is the most abundant non-psychoactive cannabinoid found in cannabis and is being scientifically investigated for numerous reasons. Most people have heard of a cannabinoid called THC, which is the ingredient in cannabis that gets users high. Unlike THC, CBD (cannabidiol) is a non-psychoactive cannabinoid and does not cause a high.. Whats the difference between CBD from hemp and CBD from marijuana?. Both hemp and marijuana are from the same genus and species (cannabis sativa). The characteristic of having low THC is the single difference that most rely on to distinguish industrial hemp from marijuana. CBD taken from hemp and marijuana is the exact same compound.. How do you know how much CBD is in your products?. Our CBD ...
I was just in California and was recently informed by a doctor that I have a condition called cannabinoid-induced peripheral neuropathy.. The disease affects my legs, arms, hands, feet and face.. This has led to my doctor recommending cannabis oil for me.. I was shocked.. Cannabis is legal and available in most places.. It is legal to grow it, to consume it, and it is widely available.. I have had no problems with the drug, and I do not want to get this one-time recommendation.. It was my first time talking to a doctor about cannabis and I am very grateful.. This doctor is not a medical cannabis advocate, but he told me about cannabis oil.. The doctor is a licensed clinical psychologist and is not affiliated with any cannabis dispensary.. He also recommended a cannabis oil that I could not find in California, called Cannapetrol.. Its not recommended by any medical or other organizations.. Cannapeterol is available from specialty cannabis dispensaries in California.. I asked my doctor if I could ...
A small number of studies have looked into the concept of cannabis dependence, comparing frequent (1) or daily cannabis users with and without dependence (Looby and Earleywine, 2007; van der Pol et al., 2013), or populations with self-perceived treatment need to populations without this perception (Copeland et al., 2001). Depending on the population studied, somewhere between 25% and 50% of daily cannabis users will fulfil the criteria for dependence (NIDA, 2012). A general conclusion that can be drawn from these studies is that, while frequent to daily use of cannabis is a strong predictor of cannabis-related problems (Fischer et al., 2011), these accumulate even more in users with (probable) dependence.. Although the above-mentioned studies have found relatively small differences in the frequency or intensity of use or quantity of cannabis used between dependent and non-dependent frequent or daily users, marked differences were identified between dependent and non-dependent users in the levels ...

To the Editor: Cannabis use is implicated in serious social disruption in many Northern Territory Aboriginal communities.1 Rising levels of cannabis use were first reported in Aboriginal communities in Arnhem Land in 2002, along with associated concerns about escalating social impacts and mental health effects compounded by other substance use.2. A random sample of 164 people in Arnhem Land initially interviewed and assessed in 2004 were followed up between October 2005 and June 2006. Their cannabis use was measured using health worker assessments and self-reports from interviews. Ethical approval was granted by the NT Health Department, Menzies School of Health Research, and James Cook University.. Despite a modest decline in cannabis use in this population between 2002 and 2004,3 the 2005-2006 data indicate persisting high rates, with 61% of males and 58% of females (aged 13-34 years) using cannabis at least weekly.. In a subsample of 60 cannabis users opportunistically recruited for in-depth ...
Frisher and colleagues compared the trends of cannabis use with general practitioner records of schizophrenia. They argue if cannabis use does cause schizophrenia, then an increase in cannabis use should be followed by an increase in the incidence of schizophrenia.. According to the study, cannabis use in the UK between 1972 and 2002 has increased four-fold in the general population, and 18-fold among under-18s. Based on the literature supporting the link, the authors argue that this should be followed by an increase in schizophrenia incidence of 29% between 1990 and 2010.. But the researchers found no increase in the diagnosis of schizophrenia or other psychotic disorders during that period. In fact some of the data suggested the incidence of these conditions had decreased.. This study does not therefore support the specific causal link between cannabis use and the incidence of psychotic disorders, the authors say. This concurs with other reports indicating that increases in population ...
A total of forty (40) male wistar rats randomly divided into four groups of ten (10) rats per group were used for this work. Group 1 served as the control and was treated with distilled water, group 2 was the low dose group (exposed to cannabis smoke for 5minutes daily), group 3 was the high dose group (exposed to cannabis smoke for 10minutes daily) and group 4 was the high dose + ascorbic acid group (exposed to cannabis smoke for 10 minutes and orally gavaged with ascorbic acid at 2.8mg/kg body weight daily). The rats were weighed weekly and the administration lasted for 28days. The animals were sacrificed on the 29th day and blood was collected by means of cardiac puncture. Serum was obtained for hormonal assay. The result showed a significant increase in the body weight (p|0.05) in the high dose group compared to low dose and high dose + ascorbic acid group, while the control group recorded the least body weight gained. There was significant decrease in testicular weight (p|0.05) in the experimental
Motor vehicle collisions are the leading cause of death for young people. The investigators have recently found that driving after using cannabis is more common among young Canadian drivers than driving after drinking. While this observation raises concerns, the effects of cannabis on driving-related skills in this age group are not well understood. As well, evidence suggests that residual effects of cannabis on driving-related skills may be observed up to 24 hours later. These residual effects may have important implications for the effects of cannabis use on collision risk, but little evidence on them in available. This study will examine the effects of a single dose of cannabis (marijuana) on driving-related skills immediately following consumption, 24 hours later, and 48 hours later. To date, the residual effect at 48 hours has not been examined. A total of 142 subjects aged 19 to 25 years old will be randomly assigned to smoke either a placebo or active cannabis cigarette (12.5% THC ...
Regardless of how much momentum the medical marijuana reimbursement movement gains or how many states legalize the substance, there is still one giant problem: The federal government classifies marijuana as a Schedule I drug - a designation it uses on substances like heroin, LSD and ecstasy.. This classification gives marijuana the harshest range of criminal penalties and is the reason why the U.S. Food and Drug Administration hasnt approved medical marijuana and, in all likelihood, wont until it is reclassified to a lower schedule.. The Schedule I tag is also why, even if employers would like to offer medical marijuana reimbursement, they will likely have a difficult time finding an insurance provider thats willing to offer health insurance or workers comp plans that cover medical marijuana.. Self-insured plans can cover medical marijuana. However, the patchwork of state and local regs combined with the uncertainty of the feds stance, makes this a far from easy proposition for employers, ...

Paul Nichols, Bergen Dispatch. Senators Cory Booker (D-NJ), Rand Paul (R-KY) and Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) today stood with patients, their families and advocates to announce new bipartisan legislation that will allow the use of medical marijuana in states where it is legal without fear of federal prosecution. The Compassionate Access, Research Expansion and Respect States (CARERS) Act would reschedule marijuana from a Schedule I to Schedule II drug to recognize it has accepted medical use, and would amend federal law to allow states to set their own medical marijuana policies.. The bill would also permit VA doctors to prescribe veterans medical marijuana to treat serious injuries and chronic conditions. The legislation would not legalize medical marijuana in all 50 states, rather it would respect the states that set their own medical marijuana programs and prevents federal law enforcement from prosecuting patients, doctors and caregivers in those states. Currently, 23 states plus the District ...
As an example, the phrase (or cannabis) is made use of when defining a Cannabis Sativa plant that is bred for its own effective, resinous glands (known as trichomes). These trichomes include high volumes of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the cannabinoid very most known for its psychedelic properties., however, is used to illustrate a Cannabis Sativa plant that has merely indication quantities of THC.. Merely products produced from commercial hemp (lower than 0.3% THC) are legal to market, purchase, consume, https://wayofleaf.com/cannabis/strains/green-crack-marijuana-strain as well as ship. This singular factor (0.3%) is actually how most individuals compare what is identified as hemp as well as what is categorized as cannabis. This limitation has actually resulted in mass controversy (forever reason), which our team will plunge right into a little later.. From hemp apparel and also devices to diet plans and also hempseed oil cosmetics, the plant is actually seemingly found just about ...
All the cannabis users in the study had experienced psychotic-like symptoms (strange sensations, such as strange sensations or having feelings of paranoia) while smoking pot.The investigators anticipated their dopamine production to be elevated since increased production of the chemical has been linked with psychosis. However, to their surprise, they found the opposite effect.. Experts attribute drug use to the difference in dopamine levels. Users who met the diagnostic criteria for chronic cannabis abuse displayed the lowest dopamine levels, an indication that it could be a marker of severe addiction. Earlier research has revealed that the risk of mental illnesses such as schizophrenia is more pronounced in chronic cannabis users.. Bloomfield explained, It has been assumed that cannabis increases the risk of schizophrenia by inducing the same effects on the dopamine system that we see in schizophrenia, but this hasnt been studied in active cannabis users until now.. Although we only looked ...
Following the passage of Proposition 64 in California, the Center for Medical Cannabis Research at UC San Diego will receive two million dollars in funding per year for the study of medical marijuana. The money comes from two new taxes levied on the cultivation and sale of cannabis. The proposition, which legalized marijuana, also authorized local governments to place additional taxes on marijuana. The Center for Medical Cannabis Research at UCSD studies the effects of marijuana on alleviating neuropathic pain stemming from a variety of causes such as diabetes, multiple sclerosis and chronic back pain. Neuropathic pain is caused when nerves are damaged or dysfunctional. The CMCR is currently conducting research on the effects of cannabis on driving ability as well.. To test the effects of cannabis on driving, healthy volunteers are placed in a driving simulator and undergo performance assessments after being exposed to cannabis. Trials measuring the pain-relieving effects of marijuana may use ...
CANNABIS CULTURE - The techniques of preparation for disease fighting, life preserving elixirs was the core for many medieval and renaissance alchemists, and this was an adaption from Islamic influences that came into Europe following the Crusades.. In references to figures such as Lully, Paracelsus, Jerome Cardan, etc Albert G. Mackey in his Encyclopedia of Freemasonry, wrote that these figures were not occultists…They had been physicians and chemists; the alchemy they studied was chemistry, and they studied it for medical uses… (along with botany, etc.) (Mackey, 1873). Interestingly, as I have found while researching my forthcomign book, Liber 420: The Cannabis Arcanum (Trineday, 2018), all 3 of the figures mentioned by name have associations with cannabis elixirs, Cardano and Paracelsus both left recipes for cannabis preparations, and cannabis appears in a number of Lullian texts.. For now, lets just take a quick look at Paracelsus recipe for a cannabis infused arcanum, a name given ...

Considering the advantages of using medicinal herbs as supplementary treatments to sensitize conventional anti-cancer drugs, studying functional mechanisms and regulatory effects of Echinacea purpurea (as a non-cannabinoid plant) and Cannabis sativa (as a cannabinoid plant) are timely and required. The potential effects of such herbs on lung cancer cell growth, apoptosis, cell cycle distribution, cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) level, caspase activity and their cannabinomimetic properties on the CB2 receptor are addressed in the current study. The cytotoxic effect of both herb extracts on the growth of lung cancer cells (A549) was assessed using the MTT assay. The annexin-V-FITC staining and propidium iodide (PI) staining methods were applied for the detection of apoptosis and cell cycle distribution using flow cytometry. The cellular level of ROS was measured using 7′-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFH-DA) as a fluorescent probe in flow cytometry. The caspase 3 activity was assessed using a

Cannabis in Colorado refers to cannabis (legal term marijuana) use and possession in Colorado, United States. The Colorado Amendment 64, which was passed by voters on November 6, 2012, led to legalization in January 2014. The policy has led to cannabis tourism. There are two sets of policies in Colorado relating to cannabis use: those for medicinal cannabis and for recreational drug use along with a third set of rules governing hemp. Amidst an early 20th century trend of limiting the drug, Colorado first restricted cannabis on March 30, 1917. In November 1914 Colorado voters approved the 22nd Amendment to the Colorado Constitution, also known as the Prohibition Amendment, prohibiting alcohol beginning January 1, 1916; and on December 18, 1917 the Eighteenth Amendment (establishing Prohibition) was proposed by Congress. Shortly after the 1937 Marihuana Tax Act went into effect on October 1, 1937, the Federal Bureau of Narcotics and Denver Police Department arrested Moses Baca for possession and ...
It has been widely reported that WHO officially recommended on December 14, 2017 that cannabis compound cannabidiol (CBD) not be internationally scheduled as a controlled substance.. What is Cannabidiol and is it safe?. Cannabidiol is one of several (probably 200) compounds of the cannabis plant.. At its November 2017 meeting, the WHO Expert Committee on Drug Dependence (ECDD) concluded that, in its pure state, cannabidiol does not appear to have abuse potential or cause harm. As such, as CBD is not currently a scheduled substance in its own right (only as a component of cannabis extracts), current information does not justify a change in this scheduling position and does not justify scheduling of the substance.. However, where CBD is produced for pharmaceutical purposes as an extract of cannabis, cannabis extracts and tinctures are included in the 1961 UN Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs. A fuller review of extracts or preparations containing almost exclusively CBD will take place in June ...

Although cannabis comes from the female flower, cannabis has been marketed to and perceived to be used mostly by men. The tides are turning as more women, especially older women, are turning to cannabis as an alternative to opioids and over-the-counter medications. Women have different health needs than men, and certain medical marijuana products can prove to be effective in both preventative and reactive medical treatments.. As cannabis is well-known for its analgesic and anti-inflammatory properties, its little wonder that women have used it to combat menstrual pain and soreness for centuries. Most famously, Queen Victoria was prescribed a cannabis indica tincture by her personal physicians for spasmodic dysmenorrhoea, aka menstrual cramps. As early as the 11th century, the Old English Herbarium recommended a hemp-infused topical for soreness of breasts.. More recently, actress Whoopi Goldberg has advocated for dysmenorrhoea as a qualifying condition for medical cannabis. Both New York and ...
A bill introduced in Congress would allow Department of Veterans Affairs doctors to recommend medical marijuana for their patients.. The Veterans Equal Access Act. Introduced Thursday by Reps. Earl Blumenauer (D-Ore.) and Dana Rohrabacher (R-Calif.) with 10 bipartisan cosponsors, would lift a ban on VA doctors giving opinions or recommendations about medical marijuana to veterans who live in states where medical marijuana is permitted. Post traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury are just as damaging and harmful as any injuries that are visible from the outside, Blumenauer said. Sometimes even more so because of the devastating effect they can have on a veterans family. We should be allowing these wounded warriors access to the medicine that will help them survive and thrive, including medical marijuana, not treating them like criminals and forcing them into the shadows. Its shameful.. Nearly 30 percent of veterans who served in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars suffer from PTSD and ...
As part of the trial, three diets were made to contain either soy oil, industrial hemp oil or cannabis oil and offered to tilapia for 8 weeks. At termination, survival, growth, feed conversion and blood parameters were assessed.. In this way, they observed that the cannabis extract increases tilapia metabolism and thus, the feed conversion.. On the other hand, cannabis had no effect on blood cell counts, total plasma protein, haematocrit or lysozyme activity.. The results thus obtained suggest that cannabis does not improve immune response of tilapia or body composition but does reduce growth rate by increasing metabolic rate.. Therefore, the Lebanese scientists found that the pot pellets did not quite have the mood-altering effect they had hoped for.. The trial showed that fish fed THC (the main psycoactive cannabis ingredient)-laden edibles did not seem to be surviving any better than fish fed a control diet, which the researchers took to mean that the drugs were not helping the fish deal with ...

CBD. Since its existence, the cannabis plant has always come in handy for a wide array of uses. As such, some researchers opined that the high feeling associated with that plant was termed a spiritual by the people of old and medium or gateway to communicate with their ancestors. Fast-forward today and the same plant thanks to its medicinal potencies is now legalized in a wide array of states in the US.. Amongst other things, the cannabis plant is rich with a wide array of composites but the two grabbing all the headings are the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) and the CBD (cannabidiol).. CBD. The rise of the cannabis industry in the US is hugely credited to the legalization of cannabis in most states in the US for medical and or recreational uses. These of course, alongside the potent nature of the cannabis plant has been key to the rise and popularity of the cannabis industry in the US. The CBD or cannabidiol is a potent chemical component, which emanates from the Cannabis sativa plant.. Supported ...
Marijuana has been shown to be a useful modality for treating a number of medical conditions, including glaucoma, nausea from cancer treatment, and chronic pain from a variety of conditions including multiple sclerosis, cancer, and AIDS.. Marijuana can be used to treat a variety of chronic pain conditions for which narcotic medications have been traditionally prescribed.. The active components in the marijuana plant can be introduced into the body in a variety of ways, including the use of lotions, tinctures, food products and beverages.. In the United States, the use of medical marijuana can now be decided by individual states. This opens the door for a much larger acceptance of medical marijuana.. As the baby boomer generation who grew up with marijuana continues to age, there may be increased pressure on legislative bodies to make medical marijuana more widely available.. In most states where medical marijuana is legal, a doctors prescription is required. Patients who have received medical ...

Santander, Spain: Cannabis use is associated with sustained effects on weight and metabolism, including lower body mass index (BMI) and lower overall cholesterol levels, according to the results of a three-year longitudinal study published in The Journal of Psychopharmacology.. Spanish researchers assessed the relationship between cannabis and weight over a three-year period in a cohort of 510 subjects. Participants in the study were classified as either continuers, discontinuers, and non-users. At the studys initiation, cannabis users presented lower weight, body mass index, total cholesterol, and low-density lipoprotein-cholesterol compared to non-users, investigators reported. Differences in weight, BMI, and LDL levels remained consistent over the three-years among those subjects who continued to consume cannabis. By contrast, those patients who discontinued using cannabis use over the course of the study presented a higher increase in weight, body mass index, and ...

Existing law, the Compassionate Use Act of 1996, an initiative measure enacted by the approval of Proposition 215 at the November 6, 1996, statewide general election, authorizes the use of cannabis for medical purposes and provides certain protections to a physician and surgeon who recommends the use of medical cannabis to a patient. The Control, Regulate and Tax Adult Use of Marijuana Act of 2016 (AUMA), an initiative measure approved as Proposition 64 at the November 8, 2016, statewide general election, authorizes a person who obtains a state license under AUMA to engage in commercial adult-use cannabis activity pursuant to that license and applicable local ordinances. Abstract: A liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry method was developed for quantifying ten cannabinoids in oral fluid (OF). This method utilizes OF collected by the Quantisal device and concurrently quantifies cannabinol (CBN), cannabidiol (CBD), Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), 11-hydroxy-Δ9-THC (11-OH-THC), 11-nor-9-carboxy-Δ9-THC (THC-COOH), 11-nor-9-carboxy-Δ9-THC glucuronide (THC-COOH-gluc), Δ9-THC glucuronide (THC-gluc), cannabigerol (CBG), tetrahydrocannabiverin (THCV), and Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinolic acid A (THCA-A). Solid phase extraction was optimized using Oasis Prime HLB 30 mg 96-well plates. Cannabinoids were separated by liquid chromatography over a BEH C18 column and detected by a Waters TQ-S micro tandem mass spectrometer. The lower limits of quantification (LLOQ) were 0.4 ng/mL for CBN, CBD, THC, 11-OH-THC, THC-gluc, and THCV; and 1.0 ng/mL for THC-COOH, THC-COOH-gluc, CBG and THCA-A. Linear ranges extended to 2000 ng/mL for THC and 200 ng/mL for all other analytes. ...
Objective: Numerous studies have found a robust association between cannabis use and the onset of psychosis. Nevertheless, the relationship between cannabis use and the onset of early (or, in retrospect, prodromal) symptoms of psychosis remains unclear. The study focused on investigating the relationship between cannabis use and early and high-risk symptoms in subjects at clinical high risk for psychosis.. Method: Prospective multicenter, naturalistic field study with an 18-month follow-up period in 245 help-seeking individuals clinically at high risk. The Composite International Diagnostic Interview was used to assess their cannabis use. Age at onset of high risk or certain early symptoms was assessed retrospectively with the Interview for the Retrospective Assessment of the Onset of Schizophrenia.. Results: Younger age at onset of cannabis use or a cannabis use disorder was significantly related to younger age at onset of six symptoms (0.33 , rs , 0.83, 0.004 , P , 0.001). Onset of cannabis ...
Cannabis has traditionally been associated with an antiemetic action following acute ingestion. Here, however, we are presented with the paradoxical effect of hyperemesis in susceptible chronic cannabis smokers. Such a paradoxical response has only previously been demonstrated with acute toxicity to intravenous injection of crude marijuana extract.14 We suspect that susceptible individuals may develop a reaction to cannabis following several years of exposure. The reasons for this are obscure. We also have difficulty explaining why, while this disease takes years to develop, it resurfaces within weeks of cannabis resumption, even after considerable periods of abstinence.. Cannabinoids have a long half life. They are extremely lipophilic and bind to cerebral fat.15 Regular use is accumulative and this might give rise to toxicity in the sensitive patient. Cannabis is known to delay gastric emptying16 and, interestingly, one of our patients (Y) had a severely delayed gastric emptying study at acute ...

Tea may be an old-school slang word for cannabis, but there is more of a connection between the two herbs than just the name. Many make infused cannabis tea drinks, as it is a great way to medicate and also a fun way to just relax. Sandra Hinchliffe is so dedicated to cannabis as medicine and the use of tea that she wrote a book on the subject, High Tea: Gracious Cannabis Tea-Time Recipes for Every Occasion. CULTURE caught up with Hinchliffe to talk about legalization, cannabis and its properties and the joys of tea.. Where did the idea for the book come from, and what made you decide to write a book about cannabis and tea?. Ive been very fond of all kinds of warm cannabis-infused beverages for a long time. I made my first bhang a decade ago when I qualified for a medical marijuana card here in California and these warm beverage methods of dosing quickly became a favorite of mine because I felt that it was more gentle and easier to control the doses than cannabis-infused edibles due to the ...
Cannabis use is a heritable trait that has been associated with adverse mental health outcomes. In the largest genome-wide association study (GWAS) for lifetime cannabis use to date (N = 184,765), we identified eight genome-wide significant independent single nucleotide polymorphisms in six regions. All measured genetic variants combined explained 11% of the variance. Gene-based tests revealed 35 significant genes in 16 regions, and S-PrediXcan analyses showed that 21 genes had different expression levels for cannabis users versus nonusers. The strongest finding across the different analyses was CADM2, which has been associated with substance use and risk-taking. Significant genetic correlations were found with 14 of 25 tested substance use and mental health-related traits, including smoking, alcohol use, schizophrenia and risk-taking. Mendelian randomization analysis showed evidence for a causal positive influence of schizophrenia risk on cannabis use. Overall, our study provides new insights into the

We are inviting the public to an open house at the dispensary regardless of whether they have an authorized medical marijuana card. While we wont have any products on display, the public can get a feel for what the dispensary looks like and how it will operate, Capurro told the Mesquite Local News in an exclusive, early look at the facility.. While located in the same building as the medical marijuana cultivation and production facility, the dispensary is operated separately with only a locked, controlled-entry door joining the two.. Once we open the dispensary for business, only people with a state-issued medical marijuana card will be allowed on the premises. Central Asia has a great climate for growing marijuana. The cannabis plant, which is indigenous to the region, blankets hillsides and reveals itself stubbornly in urban parks. Archeological evidence suggests cannabis was used in Central Asia 6,000 or more years ago and spread along early trade routes with Europe and East Asia.. Eurasianet reports in its article Uzbekistan returns to its roots with cannabis cultivation that now Uzbekistan, which promotes itself as the tourist-friendly heart of the Silk Road, is experimenting with the plant anew. Stewart became curious about medical marijuana while working at Purdue Pharma. After delving into research, he even considered bringing a drug to market, but his plans never came to fruition. His research did, however, spark a passion to find better ways to deliver the therapeutic properties of cannabis to patients.. Now, his new business, Emblem, has joined Canadas booming marijuana market, becoming the 35th business to receive its license to grow and sell medical marijuana in Ottawa.. As an investor, Stewart believes that the company can generate $74 million (U.S.) in revenue each year. The commercial cannabis industry is flourishing in Canada because in 2014 the government began requiring that patients buy medical marijuana straight from large scale, licensed growers. Investors are flocking to Canada because the government there (according to many) is on the verge of legalizing recreational marijuana across the entire country. This will ultimately help the estimated 15 percent of Canadians ...
For New York workers compensation carriers, the budding industry of medical marijuana will likely provide an interesting new set of challenges and concerns in the administration of treatment for eligible patients and injured workers.. The growing trend across the United States has recently been towards expansion of medical marijuana programs - and as of March 31, 2017, approximately 28 states, including New York, have legalized some form of medical marijuana usage. New Yorks Compassionate Care Act specifically details that patients with specified conditions (cancer, HIV infection or AIDS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis [ALS], Parkinsons disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury with spasticity, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease, neuropathy, and Huntingtons disease) with the associated or complicating conditions of cachexia or wasting syndrome, severe or chronic pain, severe nausea, seizures, or severe or persistent muscle spasms are eligible for medical marijuana. CHRONIC PAIN WILL JOIN LIST OF TEN CURRENT QUALIFYING CONDITIONS. ALBANY, N.Y. (December 1, 2016) - The New York State Department of Health today announced that chronic pain will be added as a qualifying condition for medical marijuana.. After conducting a thorough review of the scientific literature, it became clear that there may be certain benefits in the use of medical marijuana by patients suffering from chronic pain, said Health Commissioner Dr. Howard A. Zucker. Medical marijuana is already helping thousands of patients across New York State, and adding chronic pain as a qualifying condition will help more patients and further strengthen the program.. The Department will develop a proposed regulatory amendment, which will include language specifying the chronic pain conditions that would qualify for medical marijuana. The proposed regulatory amendment will be published for public comment shortly.. The other ten qualifying conditions are cancer, HIV infection or AIDS, amyotrophic ...

What they did not do was lay out specific guidelines for getting the drug into the hands of patients. Last year s follow-up statute, SB 420, outlined identification card systems and minimum legal amounts to possess but, again, distribution instructions remained vague. The matter is further complicated by federal law, which prohibits the possession, cultivation and distribution of marijuana. The U.S. Supreme Court is expected to rule shortly on the case of two California medical marijuana users challenging the ban.In this absence of clear retail sales options, many patients have resorted to illegal street ...

I dont think that medical marijuana is going to lead someone to use heroin or other drugs, Soell said. Thats nonsense.. As medical marijuana is debated across the country, one of the pressing issues in the debate is the question of legalizations social cost. By now most people accept that the Reefer Madness depiction of marijuana is ludicrous, but many still question the medical safety of marijuana; and a new study published in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence only serves to stoke those fires.. Analyzing hospitalizations in California from 2001 to 2012, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania found that areas with medical marijuana dispensaries had a 6.8 percent increase in the number of marijuana-related hospitalizations. Overall, the number of marijuana-related hospitalizations rose from 17,000 in 2001 to 68,000 in 2012.. In addition to their findings, researchers found that areas with a higher density of medical marijuana dispensaries also had a low population density, a higher percentage of low-income households and fewer residents with college degrees.. A previous version of draft guidelines for cannabis testing in Florida listed Clostridium botulinum as a target for microbial testing. On the surface, this seems like a prudent action. After all, C. botulinum is a nasty organism that is responsible for a life-threatening disease called botulism. However, because it is so dangerous, the CDC/USDA has placed it on the FEDERAL SELECT AGENTS AND TOXINS LIST. This makes it very difficult for labs to acquire C. botulinum organisms to validate their tests. It requires BL3 storage and BL2 CO2 glove boxes to culture because its an obligate anaerobe. We dont know of a single cannabis testing lab that has a BL3 lab. There are also no attenuated strains available.. We know how hard it can be to test for C. botulinum. In a 2016 study, we detected C. botulinum DNA on a cannabis sample using 16S sequencing of short amplicons. Those results should always be verified with a species-specific confirmation assay, which we have designed. Our qPCR assay detects the ...
Medical cannabis has several potential beneficial effects.[8][9] Cannabinoids can serve as appetite stimulants, antiemetics, antispasmodics, and have some analgesic effects,[1] may be helpful treating chronic non-cancerous pain, or vomiting and nausea caused by chemotherapy. The drug may also aid in treating symptoms of AIDS patients.[citation needed] The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved smoked cannabis for any condition or disease as it deems evidence is lacking concerning safety and efficacy of cannabis for medical use.[10] The FDA issued an 2006 advisory against smoked medical cannabis stating: marijuana has a high potential for abuse, has no currently accepted medical use in treatment in the United States, and has a lack of accepted safety for use under medical supervision.[10] The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) states that Marijuana itself is an unlikely medication candidate for several reasons: (1) it is an unpurified plant containing numerous chemicals ...

One tragic ill effect of the illegal status of marijuana is the difficulty it creates in performing scientific research into marijuanas physical effects. As a woman, I feel particularly robbed by the lack of studies into cannabis use during childbirth, to relieve morning sickness associated with pregnancy, and for the pain and discomfort of menstrual cramps and PMS. (Strong cannabis tinctures have been used during labor since at least 2,000 B.C., and even prudish Queen Victoria used it to relieve her menstrual cramps.) Depending on your states medical marijuana laws, you could have plenty of ways to medicate with marijuana. You can find cannabis medicine in traditional forms, like pills, or more recreational products, like edibles. Since each kind of medical marijuana product kicks in differently, you can use these differences to customize your treatment.. Two of the most well-known ways to use cannabis are smoking and vaping, which both involve inhaling the medicine. Breathing in cannabinoids lets you feel their benefits quickly, which helps when you experience sudden symptoms. Both smoking and vaping also have consistent effects, so you should feel the same thing from a dose every time you use it.. After the cannabinoids get in contact with your lungs, they spread to the rest of your body through your bloodstream. So, inhalation works exceptionally well for symptoms occurring all over. In comparison, products like topical treatments affect only one area, and products like edibles can have unpredictable ...

Because of its high density in CB1 receptors, it is expected to be highly affected by cannabis use. The aim of this systematic review is to investigate how cannabis use affects cerebellar structure and function, as well as cerebellar-dependent behavioral tasks. Three databases were searched for peer-reviewed literature published until March 2018. We included studies that focused on cannabis effects on cerebellar structure, function, or cerebellar-dependent behavioral tasks. A total of 348 unique records were screened, and 40 studies were included in the qualitative synthesis. The most consistent findings include (1) increases in cerebellar gray matter volume after chronic cannabis use, (2) ...

Opioids are commonly used as powerful analgesics however with a recent surge in opioid related overdoses and deaths it is apparent that alternative chronic pain management strategies are required. Cannabis is a promising unconventional therapy. Modifiable dosing paradigms have been proposed and when administered in combination with opioids, cannabis reduces the opioid dose required while maintaining the analgesic benefits; this is referred to as the opioid-sparing effect. However even with detailed dosing regimens and promising results, cannabis has not been incorporated into preexisting pain management strategies. Moving forward clinicians should be encouraged to integrate cannabis into the pain management paradigm.. ...
