Y1 - 2011/7. N2 - Pathogens such as rabies virus and canine distemper virus present a significant risk to the long-term survival of some endangered African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) populations. Vaccination of wild dogs is one approach that might reduce population extinction risks; however clear guidelines for how best to do this are lacking. Hence, we developed a mathematical model of wild dog population dynamics that integrates a pathogen transmission model and a vaccination process. Simulations indicated that the most effective vaccination strategy includes all age classes (when pups are 2-months old), prioritizes the breeding pair, and vaccinates at least 4 animals per pack included in the vaccination effort. In addition, populations for which an Allee effect, high rates of pathogen introduction, or ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Quantifying invasion risk: the relationship between establishment probability and founding population size. AU - DUNCAN, Richard. AU - Blackburn, Tim M.. AU - Rossinelli, Silvia. AU - Bacher, Sven. PY - 2014. Y1 - 2014. N2 - Invasive species usually start out as small colonizing populations that are prone to extinction through demographic stochasticity and Allee effects, leading to a positive relationship between establishment probability and founding population size. However, establishment success also depends on the environment to which species are introduced: for a given species, some locations will be more favourable for establishment than others. We present equations for modelling the expected relationship between establishment probability and founding population size when demographic stochasticity, Allee effects and, for the first time, environmental heterogeneity are operating. We show that heterogeneity in environmental conditions can change the shape of the relationship ...

DNA analysis shows that the first three form monophyletic clades. The wolf-like canids and the South American canids together form the tribe Canini.[6] Molecular data imply a North American origin of living Canidae some 10 Mya and an African origin of wolf-like canines (Canis, Cuon, and Lycaon), with the jackals being the most basal of this group. The South American clade is rooted by the maned wolf and bush dog, and the fox-like canids by the fennec fox and Blanfords fox. The gray fox and island fox are basal to the other clades; however, this topological difference is not strongly supported.[7] The cladogram below is based on the phylogeny of Lindblad-Toh et al. (2005),[7] modified to incorporate recent findings on Canis,[8] Vulpes,[9] Lycalopex,[10] and Dusicyon[11] species. ...

Once numbering in the hundreds of thousands, the African wild dog (Lycaon pictus) is now one of the African continents most endangered animals. It is believed that fewer than 5,000 wild dogs currently exist in the wild, and their range has declined from 33 to 15 countries. The largest populations exist in Botswana, Zimbabwe and Tanzania. The initial population reduction came during the early part of the century as a result of a very successful extermination campaign led by ranchers who feared the loss of livestock. Today, the effects of diseases (e.g., rabies, canine distemper, and parvovirus) spread by domestic dogs are having an even more devastating effect on wild dog numbers. Of additional concern is inbreeding due to the formation of genetically distinct groups of dogs in the southern and eastern regions of their current range. Wild dogs are about the size of a German shepherd, have long legs, large ears and mottled fur of browns, black and white. They live in tightly bonded social groups ...
Fragmentary long bone material from fossil Carnivora is rarely considered to support palaeoenvironmental reconstructions. Here, we use morphometry of the radius in extant carnivorans of the dog family (Canidae) to reconstruct the palaeobiology of extinct canids from Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania (Bed I and II) and Koobi Fora, Kenya. We use radius morphometrics to predict adaptation to prey size and introduce a new method for quantifying canid habitat adaptations based on the geographic distributions of the extant species sampled. Linear Discriminant Function Analyses (DFA) and cluster neighbour-joining algorithms are employed to investigate radial morphometrics as described by 29 linear measurements. Results of our analyses suggest that a phylogenetic signal is present in radial morphometrics, even if it does not allow us to accurately discriminate among genera. A binary prey size categorisation of small-medium versus large prey can be more accurately predicted than a habitat categorisation scheme ...

Hi, I feed my dog Canidae dog food. Some people might be irritated of me asking so many questions about this, but i am just curious. I want the best for my dog. My question is: What do you think is better, Dry food for dogs or canned food? And why? What makes it better? I only have canned food of Canidae and dry food of royal canin. I feed 1/3 of the can of Canidae to my 6 yr old 10-20 lbs dog. And I give about half a cup of royal canin. Do you think it is the right amount? Okay, please answer my questions. Sorry if iam asking too much!
I just bought one bag of Pacific Stream Canine Formula and my Brina is doing great on it so far. Better poops than on any food shes been before and she likes this food a lot (well she likes any food actually). But too bad that my Jaka doesnt do well on it.. I made a mistake with switching him on this food too fast and i messed up big time, he had bloody diarrhea for a few days, but its ok now. It was just a huge difference for him than previous foods that he ate before i got him (pedigree and stuff like that). Ill try feeding him TOTW again, this time with a VERY slow switch on it and if he wont do well on it, ill try with the new canidae. Sadly we dont have many good dog foods here, we only have Canidae, TOTW and Orijen, but Orijen is too high in protein for Brina. Plus all these foods are VERY expensive here, sadly... TOTW is 84$ for a 30lbs bag, Canidae is 91$ for a 40lbs bag and Orijen is 76$ for a 30lbs bag (6 fresh fish is 91$ for 30lbs)... Damn European prices ...
Adaptations of The Maned Wolf Adaptations 1.The Maned Wolf has black long legs for a reason because 1. it needs it to see over the tall grass to find its prey 2. The maned wolf participates in symbiotic relationships. The average amount of offspring a maned wolf normally has is 1 to 5. The mane is erectile and typically is used to enlarge the wolfs profile when threatened or when displaying aggression. Habitat: The maned wolf inhabits open forest, savannah, and marshland. The wolf also is different because it really isnt related to wolves of fox it is on its own. The Maned wolf lives in south america in grassland areas. Its long reddish-brown hair covers its body, with its mouth, back and tail being black. The maned wolf is a crepuscular and omnivorous animal adapted to the open environments of the South American savanna, with an important role in the seed dispersal of fruits, especially the wolf apple (Solanum lycocarpum). Behaviour Maned Wolves can be nocturnal (most active at night) or ...
By Rachel E. Wells / Wolf Song of Alaska Volunteer. A. Natural History. Until recently, the red wolf has been considered a separate species (Canis rufus) from its cousin the gray wolf (Canis lupus). Current classification of the red wolf has been under debate. Three subspecies of the red wolf have been recognized: the Florida red wolf (Canis rufus floridanus), the Mississippi Valley red wolf (C.r. gregoryi ), and the Texas red wolf (C.r. rufus ) (Mech 1970). The Florida and Mississippi subspecies of red wolf are similar to the eastern gray wolf (Canis lupus lycaon ) in size and general proportions. The Texas red wolf is physically very similar to Canis latrans, the coyote. Many debate over Texas wolf genetics and some individuals are difficult to tell apart from a coyote.. A study by Barbara Lawrence and W. H. Bossert in 1967 (Mech 1970) revealed four unique facts about the red wolf. These facts help to explain the similarity of the red wolf to the gray wolf that inhabited the eastern United ...

The goal of this study was to describe the anatomy of the femoral artery in wild canids such as the crab-eating fox (Cerdocyon thous), the hoary fox (Lycalopex vetulus), and the maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus). Two specimens from each canid group were used. Red dyed latex was injected in the arterial system of the animals, which were then fixed in 10% formaldehyde aqueous solution and dissected following the routine techniques in macroscopic anatomy. In the three canid groups, the arterial pattern was similar to that described for domestic canids, in which the deep femoral artery rises from the external iliac artery, still in the abdominal cavity, and sends its first branch, the lateral circumflex femoral artery. A few muscular branches, one or two caudal femoral arteries, and the terminal branches - the descending genicular artery, the saphenous artery, and the popliteal artery - are all originated from the femoral artery. The origin pattern of these vessels also shows similarities with ...
Scientists at USDAs National Wildlife Research Center in Fort Collins, Colorado have gone to the dogs. Well, African wild dogs, anyway. Two NWRC scientists recently travelled to Zambia, Africa to assist with research efforts on African lion and African wild dogs. Populations of these two species are having difficulties maintaining their numbers in many areas of southern Africa in the face of encroaching human populations, poaching, over-harvest, and disease. In fact, the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN) has listed the African wild dog as Endangered and the African lion as Vulnerable.. The scientists were invited by the Zambian Wildlife Authority, the government agency tasked with management of the species, and the African Wild Dog Conservation Trust (AWDCT) of Australia, a non-profit research, Zambian-registered trust based out of Mfuwe. The scientists, Dr. Mike Dunbar, a wildlife biologist and veterinarian, and Mr. Are Berentsen, a wildlife ...
Utilising primary diagnostic tests such as the dFAT and IHC, we were able to confirm lyssavirus infection in two wild dogs and a hyaena from Madikwe. The lyssaviruses identified in the current 2014-2015 outbreak inside the park were canid rabies biotype, which delineated into clade 1b of two sub-clusters, 1a and 1b, both consisting of a mixture of domestic (dog) and wildlife (jackal) viruses (Figure 1). This strongly suggested a link between wildlife and domestic dog rabies cycles in this part of South Africa, and such an association is not unique to this region. The clade 1b canid-type rabies isolated was closely related with that diagnosed in dogs, jackals and hyaena outside Madikwe in 2012. Viruses in both clades 1 and 2 could be clearly distinguished from viruses in group 3, representing the mongoose rabies biotype, a variant believed to have been introduced into this region at least 200 years ago (Van Zyl, Markotter & Nel 2010).. In Madikwe Game Reserve in 1997 (Hofmeyr et al. 2000) and ...
The L.A. Zoo last week introduced two endangered African wild dogs, the zoos first in more than 40 years.. The pair of black, yellow, and white canines are brother and sister, and just over a year old. They most recently lived at New Yorks Bronx Zoo.. In their native sub-Saharan Africa, the dogs are predators that roam up to 30 miles a day hunting for food.. But they have declined in population recently because of human incursions into their habitat and from diseases such as rabies and canine distemper. Only about 5,000 exist worldwide; about 150 live in captivity in the United States. Officials plan to breed the pair with wild dogs from other zoos. They are part of the national Species Survival Plan program, which finds suitable mates for animals facing extinction. --Tony Barboza. Photo: Tad Motoyama/Los Angeles Zoo. ...

The IUCN/SSC Canid Specialist Group / Canid Species Accounts. The fauna and flora of South America are remarkable for their endemism. The canids of South America are no exception. There are 10 canid species found here, of which 9 are endemic. The 10th species, the gray fox, occurs mainly in North and Central America, extending its range only into northern South America.. The majority of canids found in South America are commonly referred to as foxes. However, to distinguish the endemic South American Pseudalopex spp. (formerly Dusicyon) and Cerdocyon thous, we refer to these by their Spanish name zorro. The zorros are found in every habitat on the continent, from the coastal deserts (Sechuran zorro), to the open savanna (grey zorro, culpeo, Azaras zorros). While elsewhere (Asia, Africa) canids invariably shun the rain forest, one species of South American zorro is found in the rain forests (small-eared zorro) and another (the crab-eating zorro) inhabits coastal and lowland forests. In ...
Wild animals are carriers of a number of pathogens that have the potential to infect the human population and/or domestic animals. The intensity of contact between wildlife, livestock and human population is increasing due to a number of factors, primarily human and livestock population growth leading to encroachment onto wildlife habitat [1, 2]. During recent decades a number of pathogen crossovers from wildlife to humans and livestock have occurred resulting in emerging diseases, such as SARS, Hantavirus Pulmonary syndrome 1, Nipah virus disease 1, and Hendra virus-induced diseases among others. However, it is also evident that transmission can occur both ways i.e. pathogens may spill-over to wildlife from humans and/or from livestock. One example of this is the spill-over of Canine distemper virus from domestic dogs (Canis familiaris) to African wild dogs (Lycaon pictus) in Serengeti in 1991 leading to local extinction of wild dogs in the area [2]. Apart from being carriers of novel viruses ...

SANTOS, André Luiz Quagliatto and LIMA, Eduardo Maurício Mendes de. TOPOGRAPHY OF THE OPENINGS OF THE PAROTIDICS DUCTS OF A GUARA WOLF (Chrysocyon brachyrus ILLIGER, 1811). Cienc. Topography of the opening points of the parotid ducts into the vestibule of the mouth from a female adult guara wolf (Chrysocyon brachyrus) coming from the Sabiá Park Zoo in the city of Uberlândia, Minas Gerais, Brazil, was studied. Horizontal incisions were performed on the walls of the vestibule of the mouth on each side up to the point of the labial comissure that allowed the identification of the parotid duct openings as well as its relationships with the vestibular surface of the pre-molar and upper molar teeth. In this opportunity, it could be observed that, in this animal, the parotid ducts open into in correspondence to the upper first molar tooth.. Keywords : Chrysocyon brachyrus; parotid ...
A replicated, before-and-after study in 1990-1991 of maned wolves Chrysocyon brachyurus in a research facility in the USA found that when fed a diet containing commercial pellets, dry matter feed intake and digestibility were similar compared to a high meat and fruit-based diet despite a lower protein content. Dry matter intake was similar on the commercial diet compared to the high fruit and meat diet (584 vs 389 g per 30 kg of body mass per day) as was digestibility (73 vs 77%) whereas the metabolisable energy derived from protein was lower (28.6 vs 36.4%). Excess dietary protein is associated with the renal disorder cystinuria in maned wolves. Feed intake was monitored for three days in two individually housed wolves and one breeding pair housed together but fed separately, for the high meat and fruit diet and for two breeding pairs, where feed intake was combined, for the commercial diet. The high meat and fruit diet consisted of whole rats (575 g per 30 kg of body mass per day) fed in the ...
Habitat loss has caused the population as a whole to become separated from each other and be isolated from reproducing with each other. This is causing stress in the animals as it is harder to find packs which is a major component of their lives. This is because African wild dogs are relatively small and need packs to hunt down prey and they have to compete for for with larger carnivores such as lions and the other canine of Africa the Hyena. This competition with other carnivores has accounted for about 15% of wild dog deaths in an area of research (Creel 1997). If the other carnivores dont necessarily kill the wild dogs directly they could indirectly be affecting the animals by stealing their food. On average, Gormon et al. 1998, found that wild dogs spend 3.5 hours a day hunting and if they lose 25% of their meals to other carnivores then they have to hunt for 12 hours which dramatically increases their energy budget. Since they are so small it takes lots of energy to successfully take down ...
When it might be time to move, African wild dogs take a poll with an odd electoral instrument: sneezing. The more sneezes, the more likely it is the pack will move, according to a new study.

After the fighters from the first act cleared the arena, T Iulius went on, Our next acts are related to Lupercalia. But for that i want to present you a some information. LEXICON MYTHOLOGIAE. Lycaon - In Greek mythology, Lycaon was a king of Arcadia,, who, in the most popular version of the myth, tested Zeus omniscience by serving him the roasted flesh of Lycaons own son Nyctimus, in order to see whether Zeus was truly all-knowing. In return for these gruesome deeds, Zeus transformed Lycaon into a wolf, along with his offspring. Nyctimus was restored to life. Satyr - In mythology, Satyrs are deities of the woods and mountains. A satyr is the member of a troop of ithyphallic male companions of Dionysus; they usually have horse-like ears and tails, as well as permanent, exaggerated erections. However in Roman representations they are portrayed as having the upper body of a man with a goats ears, tail, legs and horns but Satyrs can come in other hybrid human/animal forms, as well. And our next ...

Though dogs truly are our best friends, they can sometimes be, well, a bit weird about things. Lets face it-our partnership with them has only lasted for twenty thousand years or so; before that, theyd had millions of years of experience under their belts. Evolutionary studies suggest that the first identifiable members of the dog family, Canidae, appeared about 40 million years ago during the Eocene epoch, with todays modern wolf appearing nearly two million years ago. We Homo Sapiens, however, have only been around for about half a million years.

The photographer, Tom Harnish, writes that Zantedeschia is often misnamed Calla: Zantedeschia is a different genus than Calla - not a small distinction if you consider that dogs and cats are two different genera (Canidae and Felidae). Imagine going into a pet store and seeing signs over the puppies that indicate theyre cats? Oddly, most garden shops label these flowers calla (even cala) lilies, and thats what most people call them. Zantedeschia, shown here, are from tropical Africa, and should not be confused with the smaller white calla that grows in bogs of northern Europe, Asia, and North America.. ...

Accelerates the degradation of transcripts by removing pyrophosphate from the 5-end of triphosphorylated RNA, leading to a more labile monophosphorylated state that can stimulate subsequent ribonuclease cleavage.
Our definition of STR identify short, possibly imperfect tandem repeats as short as 9 bp with the motif repeated at least 3 times; it takes both known genetic variation and rare pattern deviations into account. As there is no consensus in the literature about cut-off values for identification of STRs [20], we chose cut-off values of 3 repeats and 9 bp minimum length. Interestingly, two other studies point to these cut-off values as reasonable: Ref [21] identifies orthologous, alignable STRs in the human and chimpanzee reference genomes and estimate that polymerase slippage is negligible below 10 bp. Ref [22] compiles a microsatellite data set with perfect repeats from the reference genome and estimates that polymerase slippage mutations do rarely occur unless the STR length is ,8-9 bp and the number of repeats ,3. Both studies use only the reference genome(s) and mathematical models to estimate the slippage threshold.. We have used a specialized algorithm to detect STRs, but other tandem repeats ...

ABSTRACT We used two survey methods - citizen science for private land and cameras for protected areas - to map the distribution of dingoes/wild dogs and foxes in NSW. Dingo/wild dog records were mostly confined to the east coast and ranges, with scattered locations in western NSW. This contrasts to the distribution of foxes, in which occupancy was high across most of the state. Data from 200 WildCount camera sites within protected areas also showed marked differences in the distribution of the two canid species. At the scale of the state, dingoes/wild dogs are uncommon, with the greatest concentration being in the north-east of the state, as well as a marked presence in the south-east. Foxes are common and widespread within protected areas, but less common in the north-east of the state. The camera data also indicated that feral cats are widespread within protected areas. The second aim of our study was to examine the WildCount data for behavioural patterns of the canid species. Foxes and ...
With a large percentage of Australias significant natural heritage on private land, private landholders are critical to the long-term protection and conservation of natural and cultural values. By becoming a part of the Conservation Covenant and Stewardship Program, landholders can conserve the values of the land they manage and help protect it forever.. Australian ecosystems are highly diverse and can be poorly represented on public lands (Figgis 2004), so public land protection alone is insufficient. Private land can substantially contribute to increasing protected habitats, species resilience and maintaining landscape connectivity to complement the Australian Governments National Reserve System.. Protected land is generally of low production value, with high nutrient land used for agriculture and production. Private land can contain very different vegetation types, including the last remaining native vegetation and habitats in some areas.. As a landowner, you are in a unique position to ...

Its uncommon that we find undigested food in the feces as Jason did, Swenson said. So, to have that in conjunction with regurgitation and being skinny, those are too many factors pointing to GI problems.. Swenson mentioned the familiarity with MedVet of Grapevine.. Weve worked with them on other cases, particularly Dr. Erika Pickens, the internal medicine specialist, Swenson said. Shes always been very willing to donate her time. If we have something that requires a lot of equipment, anesthesia or medication, we always offer to pay for that. As far as her time, effort and use of her equipment, Erika is often very generous and donates those to us.. Otherwise, it could end up very expensive. Having that relationship where they are willing to help is wonderful for us from a budget standpoint.. ...
So they would agree with me when I tell my class that the 95% of species that are only found on Hawaii evolved from some other plant that migrated there from somewhere else. They would just say it happened really really fast rather than over 2-5 million years.. None of this they call evolution. They call it microevoluton or just genetic sorting. But how did these change, well really they changed by all those processes that evolutionists talk about but they just cut off the extent to which evolution can create really new features. However, what is interesting is that several authors clearly state that there was obviously not enough genetic variation in the two dogs that got off the Ark to create foxes, wolves, and African wild dogs and thus some new versions of genes must have formed along the way and these formed by new mutations. The admission that new genetic information is being created over time and then used to form new species would just shock the lay Christian because the standard YEC ...
SWCDs are local units of government that manage and direct natural resource management programs at the local level. Districts work in both urban and rural settings, with landowners and with other units of government, to carry out a program for the conservation, use and development of soil, water and related resources. One crucial niche, districts fill, is that of providing soil and water conservation services to owners of private lands. Privately owned lands make up to 78% of the land surface in Minnesota. Managing these private lands, whether agriculture, forest, lakes or urban, is key to Minnesotas quality of life.. ...

At a special meeting of the Lenawee County Board of Commissioners on April 16, 2020, the board approved extension of a Local State of Emergency, first declared on March 24, 2020, until May 15, 2020. The Local State of Emergency was initially declared when Lenawee County was still waiting for its first coronavirus case. The concern locally was, and continues to be, a shortage of Personal Protection Equipment and testing media necessary for first responders, hospitals, and other medical facilities to care for patients, protect personnel, and track the spread of the virus. Lenawee County has been fortunate that the per capita rate in the county is less than surrounding Michigan counties and the hospitals have not been overwhelmed, said Marshall in the release. However, multiple new cases are being diagnosed nearly every day and cases in the county are up nearly 250 percent since the first of April alone. In conjunction with the Local State of Emergency, Emergency Orders to protect public health ...
Lycanthropia, which Avicenna calls cucubuth, others lupinam insaniam, or wolf-madness, when men run howling about graves and fields in the night, and will not be persuaded but that they are wolves, or some such beasts. Aetius and Paulus call it a kind of melancholy; but I should rather refer it to madness, as most do. Some make a doubt of it whether there be any such disease. Donat ab Altomari saith, that he saw two of them in his time: Wierus tells a story of such a one at Padua 1541, that would not believe to the contrary, but that he was a wolf... And Nebuchadnezzar in Daniel, as some interpreters hold, was only troubled with this kind of madness. This disease perhaps gave occasion to that bold assertion of Pliny, some men were turned into wolves in his time, and from wolves to men again: and to that fable of Pausanias, of a man that was ten years a wolf, and afterwards turned to his former shape: to Ovids tale of Lycaon, &c ...
This page is a Tree of Life Branch Page.. Each ToL branch page provides a synopsis of the characteristics of a group of organisms representing a branch of the Tree of Life. The major distinction between a branch and a leaf of the Tree of Life is that each branch can be further subdivided into descendent branches, that is, subgroups representing distinct genetic lineages..
