If you want to have a tamed canary that will allow you to handle it, you should start with a very young bird and it is recommended that you keep only one. The proper way to handle a canary is to place your hand gently on its back and wrap your fingers around the birds body with your thumb and forefinger circled around the head and neck for support. The aim of this project is to distinguish between to alternative hypotheses for why reed canary grass, a known invasive species that is present in a set of wetlands in a long-term monitoring project, has not taken over any of these wetlands in the past 27 years. One possible reason is that the reed canary grass populations in wetlands at Cedar Creek are the native reed canary grass, which is not invasive. Because the invasive variety is a tetraploid (with extra sets of chromosomes), determining the chromosome number (karyotype), will allow us to support or refute that hypothesis. This will be done by collecting plant material from which we can get growing roots (seeds and rhizomes) and using the root tips (where cell division is occurring) for karyotyping. This is a cooperative project with MN DNR Forestry. This approximately 10-acre site is located about 5 miles northeast of Red Wing near the confluence of the Vermillion and Mississippi Rivers. The site comprises large fields of reed canary grass bordered by stands of willow. Willow are successfully preventing reed canary grass from encroaching into nearby high quality floodplain forest. During 2015, reed canary grass was controlled on five acres along an approximately 20-foot strip adjacent to the willow stands. During winter 2015-16, willow were cut on 5 acres along a 20 strip adjacent to the reed canary grass control. Willow respond vigorously to cutting with new regrowth, and are expected to expand into the area where reed canary grass was controlled. This will create a wider buffer of forested habitat to further protect the adjacent high quality floodplain forest. The aim of this study was to establish the genetic studies of the population from one of the most important known aboriginal funerary spaces of the island of El Hierro (Canary Islands), the Punta Azul cave, which harbors remains of 127 individuals. Sixty-one adult tibiae were examined, 32 left and 29 right. Radiocarbon dating yields an antiquity of 1015-1210 AD. We have obtained an overall success rate of 88.5% for the molecular sexing, and of 90.16% for the uniparental markers. Short tandem repeats (STR) profiles were also possible for 45.9% of the samples. This performance is a consequence of the good conservation of the bones in their archaeological context. The mtDNA composition of the sample is characterized by the complete fixation of the H1-16260 lineage. I have 2 female 6 year old finches in separate large cages placed fairly close together. In the past few weeks one seemed weak and lethargic.I started adding spinach and veterinary finch diet plus vitamins and probiotics and noticed she became stronger and appetite improved but now is seeming agitated and fluffing feathers a lot. We tested the hypothesis that fertilized containerized Pinus canariensis seedlings increases survival when planted in semiarid sites through the improvement of their physiological status during the establishment phase by an increment in root growth. Seedlings were cultured under two different regimes: traditional (in non-fertilized natural soil) and alternative (in fertilized peat). Morphological attributes and nitrogen content were measured before planting. In this work, the presence of free-living amoebae (FLA) in dishcloths collected from human activity related places was evaluated. Once in the laboratory, 6 cm2 pieces of each dishcloth were cut and washed with Pages Amoeba Solution (PAS) in sterile tubes. After washing, the dishcloth pieces were removed, and the tubes were centrifuged (1500 rpm for 10 min). The obtained pellets were seeded onto 2% non-nutrient agar (NNA) plates, incubated at room temperature and were monitored daily an inverted microscope. Once clonal cultures were obtained (only one type of FLA observed), molecular analyses were carried out in order to characterize the isolated FLA strains at the genus/genotype level. From the 31 dishcloths which were processed, FLA strains were isolated in NNA plates in 13 the samples (13/31, 42%).
