Drought stress is one of the major natural challenges in the main tea-producing regions of China. The tea plant (Camellia sinensis) is a traditional beverage plant whose growth status directly affects tea quality. Recent studies have revealed that microRNAs (miRNAs) play key functions in plant growth and development. Although some miRNAs have been identified in C. sinensis, little is known about their roles in the drought stress response of tea plants. Physiological characterization of Camellia sinensis Tieguanyin under drought stress showed that the malondialdehyde concentration and electrical conductivity of leaves of drought-stressed plants increased when the chlorophyll concentration decreased under severe drought stress. We sequenced four small-RNA (sRNA) libraries constructed from leaves of plants subjected to four different treatments, normal water supply (CK); mild drought stress (T1); moderate drought stress (T2) and severe drought stress (T3). A total of 299 known mature miRNA sequences and

Kuntze seed improving TNF-α impaired insulin stimulated glucose uptake and insulin signaling. Flavonoids had anti-metabolic syndrome and anti-inflammatory properties. It had widely been known for biological activity of catechins in tea, but very few research reports discussed the biological activity of non-catechin flavonoids in tea seed. We used HepG2 cell to treat with 5 μM insulin or with 5 μM insulin + 30 ng/ml TNF-α. Detecting the glucose concentration of medium, insulin decreased the glucose levels of medium meant that insulin promoted glucose uptake into cells, but TNF-α inhibited the glucose uptake effect of ...

ABSTRACT. A novel form of hydroponic culture was employed to explore the physiological function of roots of a tea plant (Camellia sinensis). The pH of the nutrient solution with an actively growing tea plant decreased during cultivation. Furthermore, no oxalic acid, tartaric acid, malic acid or citric acid, all possible factors in acidification, was detected in the nutrient solution of a growing plant. A proton pump inhibitor suppressed the acidification of the solution. Soil acidification might have been accelerated with a proton released from ammoniacal nitrogen preferentially for the growth, suggesting the specific mechanism of tea plant as a functional food.. 1. Introduction. Plants use unique physiological functions and growth characteristics to protect themselves against natural enemies and environmental stress such as draught and chemicals. The roots of a plant play an important role in growth, and they are related to the biosynthesis that adds to the plants leaves. It is well known that ...
Tea (|i|Camellia sinensis|/i|) is a popular beverage all over the world and a number of studies have focused on the genetic uniqueness of tea and its cultivars. However, molecular mechanisms underlying these phenomena are largely undefined. In this report, based on expression data available from public databases, we performed a series of analyses to identify genes probably relevant to the uniqueness of |i|C. sinensis|/i| and two of its cultivars (LJ43 and ZH2). Evolutionary analyses showed that the evolutionary rates of genes involved in the pathways were not significantly different among |i|C. sinensis|/i|, |i|C. oleifera|/i|, and |i|C. azalea|/i|. Interestingly, a number of gene families, including genes involved in the pathways synthesizing iconic secondary metabolites of tea plant, were significantly upregulated, expressed in |i|C. sinensis|/i| (LJ43) when compared to |i|C. azalea|/i|, and this may partially explain its higher content of flavonoid, theanine, and caffeine. Further investigation

The present study was designed to investigate the antidepressant potential of ethanolic extract of leaves and buds of Camellia sinensis (White tea) at 300 mg/kg doses in mice and antibacterial potential by disc diffusion method. Antidepressant activity of the ethanolic extract of white tea (EEWT) was assessed by using hole cross test, open field test and thiopental induced sleeping time test in swiss albino mice. The efficacy of extract (300mg/kg) was compared with standard anxiolytic drugs diazepam (1mg/kg) orally. The extract increased the locomotor activity of mice in open field and hole-cross test significantly (p,0.05). Moreover, the extract significantly (p,0.05) maximized onset of sleep and minimized the duration of sleeping time when administered with thiopental sodium. On the other hand, to determine antibacterial activities, the extract was tested against two Gram positive and five Gram negative bacteria at three concentrations (200, 300, 500μg/disc) through disc diffusion method. The ...

I did a lot of clearing out in this bed. It had a giant lavatera which was lovely, but was getting much too big for the space. I tried pruning it but it was like Medusa... for each branch I cut, seven more grew back! I took some cuttings and Im planning to grow one in a big pot there instead, hopefully that will keep it under control. I also dug out some gaura bushes for the same reason, and put back some smaller cuttings. Its a bit hard to see this bed in the photo (harsh low winter sun makes garden photography difficult!) but there are daffodil leaves peeking up, hellebores budding, and at the back is camellia Cinnamon Cindy, showing her first blossoms of the season. For a bit of transitional interest I grouped together some potted polyanthus and put some ranunculus around them ...

Pip Tattnal woke in the dense warmth of an Emanuel County summer at 4:17 a.m., a fact that he would learn much later when he became acquainted with clocks. For the rest of his life he would jerk from sleep at that very instant, his body refusing to sleep through the stroke of darkness. He did not open his eyes. He did not need to open his eyes. He knew where he was-the same place he had been for almost a year. He was on the farm sharecropped by the Hooks family, although the land was always called by another mans name as if to remind Mr. Jimmie and Miss Versie that they owned not much more than debt and the clothes on their backs plus a spare change for Sunday, a clutter of ironware and dishes, and a few clanking enamel chamber pots. For the last several years it also had been known as The White Camellia Orphanage or The Cottage because of the doings of Mr. Sam Truetlen, owner of a nearby cotton gin and the far-off Genl Notions Store, who had traveled all the way to New Orleans and on to ...

The aged tea leaves, buds, and stems of Camellia Sinesis plant are picked up for preparing the black tea. Though the black tea, green tea, and oolong tea also come from the same plant, the process indicates the type of tea. Complete fermentation of the leaves results in black tea while partially fermented tea makes the oolong tea. However, the green tea is a result of the unfermented process.. Genesis of Black Tea. While all black tea leaves are generally produced from Camellia sinensis in China, which originated in the late 16th century, the black tea in India is produced from a different variety referred to as Camellia Assamica. You will observe that the leaves of Indian black tea are larger in size and have a stronger flavor compared to the counterpart from China. According to the article published by Health and Wealth, the mango tea by using the leaves of a mango tree is also gaining popularity due to its benefits.. Benefits of Loose Leaf Black Tea. With all the rain in May, hopefully, we havent all washed away. One benefit of the rain is June may be an extremely green month. If your yard is anything like mine, very much the blooming jungle, this rain is causing the plants to grow by leaps and bounds. I cant seem to find the time when it is not raining to take the garden loppers, shears and maybe even the chainsaw to it. It seems impossible to even start, but start I must. Where to start? I will be cutting many plants way back; I need to be able to walk on the path in my yard. Now that it is June, I will not be trimming my azaleas or my camellias back. Camellias are now forming the flowers for next fall and winter and azaleas are now forming flowers for next spring. Pulling weeds is also on the list. Dont waste garden space on weeds that use up valuable water without any return. IF the rain stops, we will all have to water. With the hotter temperatures most plants need more water. This is especially true for azaleas and camellias and any ...

Tea plants (Camellia sinensis) are well known for their ability to accumulate high concentrations of aluminium (Al). Aluminium distribution in tea leaves has been previously estimated on a qualitative basis using energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis (EDXMA). However, no comprehensive studies have been earned out to quantitatively determine the distribution of Al, especially in young leaves which are used for the manufacture of commercial tea. Cuttings of C. sinensis var. sinensis grown in acidic soil were collected and young and old leaves were used for analysis. Total Al concentrations in young and old leaves were 380 and 6866 μg·g-1, respectively. The leaves were freeze-fractured and the quantitative distribution of Al and other elements such as Mg, Ca and K was determined using EDXMA. In the young and old leaves Al was found to be preferentially accumulated in the upper epidermis. In particular, Al was accumulated in the cell walls, which had significantly higher levels than the vacuoles ...

Green, black and oolong teas, cha, all are made from the tea plant, Camellia sinensis. Yunnan tuocha tea, however, is one of a few teas known as pu-er cha, made from an ancient subspecies of the tea plant, Camellia sinensis assamica. It is grown in the Yunnan province of southern China. Tuo cha means bowl-shaped tea. It refers to the method of shaping the pu-er tea during drying. Experts recommend drinking three cups of this tea everyday. Enjoy it hot or iced. Drink it as is, or try adding lemon and your favorite sweetener. Also, drink any of Triple Leaf Teas green, white or

Tea plant is known to be a hyper-accumulator of fluoride (F). Over-intake of F has been shown to have adverse effects on human health, e.g., dental fluorosis. Thus, understanding the mechanisms fluoride accumulation and developing potential approaches to decrease F uptake in tea plants might be beneficial for human health. In the present study, we found that pretreatment with the anion channel inhibitor NPPB reduced F accumulation in tea plants. Simultaneously, we observed that NPPB triggered Ca2+ efflux from mature zone of tea root and significantly increased relative CaM in tea roots. Besides, pretreatment with the Ca2+ chelator (EGTA) and CaM antagonists (CPZ and TFP) suppressed NPPB-elevated cytosolic Ca2+ fluorescence intensity and CaM concentration in tea roots, respectively. Interestingly, NPPB-inhibited F accumulation was found to be significantly alleviated in tea plants pretreated with either Ca2+ chelator (EGTA) or CaM antagonists (CPZ and TFP). In addition, NPPB significantly depolarized
Shakespeare, Macbeth. Although that line from the Bard refers to sleep, it could well be pressed into service to pertain to tea, as we shall try to show in a new series of essays of which this is the first.. These are perhaps fanciful images but to many of us tea is nourisher and natures second course.. True Tea is Camellia sinensis. Tea sensu strictu, the tea laden with proven healthful attributes, comes from the terminal shoots of the tea plant which in botanical taxonomy is Camellia sinensis (L.) O. Kuntze (family Theaceae). No other species of plant gives the true tea that feeds a huge global demand.. The Types of Made Tea. Tea may be drunk hot, or cooled, or ice-cold, with or without milk and sugar, depending on preference and circumstances, but it is initially a hot-water extract of the processed C. sinensis shoots (ideally, the topmost two immature leaves and terminal bud). The processing (or manufacture) of the shoots is carried out to varying degrees and by different steps, ...
Oolong Tea Weight Loss: What You Need To Get Where You Want To Be. Oolong tea weight loss is a great product that certainly could help you to lose a substantial amount of weight. It is a tea that hails from China, and its name in English means black dragon tea. It is produced by being left out in the sun until it starts to whiter and oxidize.. The taste of Oolong tea can vary greatly, depending on the variety of the plant that the tea leaves come from that are used to produce the different types of it.. Some Oolong teas taste very fruity and sweet, and have a honey type of aroma. While other types can be very thick, and come with a woody and roasted smell. Still other kinds smell like flowers, and taste extremely green or fresh. It really all comes down to the manufacturers preference, and the style of production ...
WHAT IS BLACK TEA?. All tea comes from the leaves of one plant, Camellia sinensis, which is processed into four tea types: White, Green, Oolong and Black.. Regional conditions in the various tea-growing area of the world determine a teas profile, and one tea type can be quite different from another of its type in color, body, flavor and aroma.. In the case of Black Teas, the differences are noted in the names, which often are taken from the districts in the countries where they are grown. Variations include such names as Assam (India), Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and Yunnan (China).. For all four teas, the main point differentiating them comes from processing. After being picked from the Camellia sinensis plant, both White and Green Teas remain as unoxidized teas, Oolong Tea is partially oxidized, and Black Tea is fully oxidized. Oxidation occurs when enzymes in the tea leaves are released and the leaf responds to the oxygen in the environment, causing the leaves to turn a bright copper ...

Just like the roasting of the coffee bean produces different flavored coffees, the fermenting of tea leaves produces different flavors. There are four common types of tea made from the same plant. The evergreen shrub is native to China and India. The Camellia sinensis plant is made into white, green, oolong and black teas.. Each type of tea has its distinct flavor and health benefits. The teas are given their names according to the way they are processed. Studies are finding that all these tea types have heart health benefits. White tea is produced from the buds and leaves of the Camellia sinensis shrub. It is the least processed. The unfermented buds and leaves are immediately steamed.. It has the highest antioxidant properties. White tea not only has heart health benefits, but it also has more cancer-fighting potential than the other teas. Green tea is made from unfermented leaves. It is widely known to have heart health benefits. It is made from leaves that are streamed.. Green tea has more ...
A 2009 meta-analysis of 12 studies indicated a borderline significant association between highest green tea consumption and reduced risk of lung cancer, and an increase in green tea consumption of two cups/day was associated with an 18% decreased risk of developing lung cancer.8 A newly published systematic review only included 5 human-related studies, and found insufficient evidence to support green tea use for preventing lung cancer.9 Another meta-analysis of 6 cohort/case control studies published in 2012 found significant nonlinear dose-response relationship between green tea consumption and risk of lung cancer, showing favourable effect of green tea consumption especially when the dose was more than 7 cups per day.10 ...

Consequently, tea is very popular - apart from water, it is the most widely consumed liquid beverage worldwide.[1]. Natural tea (infusions of the leaves of Camellia sinensis) contains cations, trace elements and organic molecules which impart its aroma, flavour and color. Added substances like bergamot oil in Earl Grey may modify the characteristics - these chemicals also have physiological effects on mammalian cells and metabolism.. Health claims have been made surrounding tea drinking for many years; some of them beneficial, others confusing. For example, a contemporary Korean chocolate manufacturer includes tea extract in ...
Ive had mild but persistent acne for most of my adult life (now 47) and have been through most of the medical treatments, including oral isotretinoin, benzoyl peroxide + adapelene, azelaic acid and topical clindamycin. These have helped keep my skin under control but also dried it out. In addition Ive tried many moisturisers to find one that works without irritating my skin, including the usual recommendations such as Cetaphil - none of these were effective for me. After reading a great site on the science of acne (Acne Einstein) I discovered recent evidence for the benefits of antioxidants including EGCG from green tea. I bought some of the Madre EGCG Green Tea skin cream a week ago and am amazed by the results. I know my skin pretty well and Ive never seen it react so well and so quickly to a skin care product. My acne bumps immediately reduced - and after a week Ive had no new ones. My skin has become smoother and I can see a reduction in sebum production - with smaller fewer blackheads. ...
Bare-rooting techniques have been widely use in New Zealand nursery production for the preparation of live plants for export to overseas or domestic markets. Bare-root transplants can fail quality requirements due to death or deterioration of regrowth following repotting. The potential for improving bare-root nursery stock quality has prompted study of the morphological effects of removed medium treatment on plant. Two experiments were conducted to explore the effects of physical root disturbance by shaking and washing on the growth and development of camellia (Camellia x saluenensis cv. Donation), pittosporum (Pittosporum tenuifolium cv. Kohuhu), pumpkin (Cucurbita pepo cv. Crown Hybrid), and coleus (Coleus blumei). The shaken plants in both dry and wet conditions suffered a reduction in the growth rate of their leaves compared to the unshaken controls. Root washing influenced the vegetative growth of four species and reproductive growth of pumpkin. The two woody species were more ...

Leaf phenology of tropical evergreen forests affects carbon and water fluxes. In an earlier study of a seasonally moist evergreen tropical forest site in the Amazon basin, time series data of Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) from the VEGETATION and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) sensors showed an unexpected seasonal pattern, with higher EVI in the late dry season than in the wet season. In this study we conducted a regional-scale analysis of tropical evergreen forests in South America, using time series data of EVI from MODIS in 2002. The results show a large dynamic range and spatial variations of annual maximum EVI for evergreen forest canopies in the region. In tropical evergreen forests, maximum EVI in 2002 typically occurs during the late dry season to early wet season. This suggests that leaf phenology in tropical evergreen forests is not determined by the seasonality of precipitation. Instead, leaf phenological process may be driven by availability of solar radiation ...

There once was a famous English actor of the last century, Arthur Wing Pinero, who was often heard saying, Where theres tea, theres hope.. Like taking in a smooth cup of your favorite steeped brew, lets infuse our minds with an introduction to tea.. Legend has it that tea was discovered by the Emperor of China in 2737 B.C., quite by accident when leaves from a nearby tree fell into his cup of boiling water. Being an herbalist, he was intrigued by the change of color in the water and decided to try it. As this infused liquid made him feel both refreshed and invigorated, the concept of tea was born. Further research led him to the discovery of its ancillary medicinal properties, which to this day we still know to be true.. Theanine was discovered in 1949 by the Japanese researcher Yajiro Sakato1, as a new amide in the water extract of the Japanese green tea Gyokuro (玉 露) - also called precious dew due to its dark green colour and high price in Japanese markets, because of its unique characteristic taste of sweetness and umami2.. The green tea leaves from specialized varieties of the tea plant Camellia sinensis (Ericales plants) have enormous amounts of theanine, which they absorb from the roots of the plant depending on the nitrogen supply of the soil3, 4. A soil that is rich in nitrogen will promote the biosynthesis of the non-protein aminoacid L-Theanine from Glutamic Acid and Ethylamine (by the enzyme theanine synthetase)2. Since the commercial price of green tea is almost directly proportional to its theanine content, to obtain theanine-rich, good quality green tea leaves, a large amount of nitrogen fertilizer must be supplied to the cultivated plants throughout the growth period (with problematic ...
The Chinese have always been quite knowledgeable when it comes to all things medicinal. Study details. Basu and her co-workers recruited 35 obese people with MetS to participate in their randomised controlled trial. The participants, who had an average age of 42.5, were randomly assigned to consume four cups of green tea, two capsules of green tea extracts, or four cups of water per day for eight weeks. Both sources of green tea (Camellia sinensis) were decaffeinated, and provided an average daily dose of about 450 mg of EGCG. At the end of the study, Basu and her co-workers did not observe any differences in the various features of MetS, such as biomarkers of inflammation. However, both green tea interventions reduced levels of amyloid alpha compared to the control group, said the researchers. Specifically, the green tea drink reduced amyloid alpha levels by 14.5 per cent, while the extract reduced levels by 24.6 per cent after eight weeks. To our knowledge, this is the first study investigating the effects of decaffeinated green tea supplementation on biomarkers of ...
In this study, we used several molecular techniques to develop a fast and reliable protocol (DNA Verity Test, DVT) for the characterization and confirmation of the species or taxa present in herbal infusions. As a model plant for this protocol, Camellia sinensis, a traditional tea plant, was selected due to the following reasons: its historical popularity as a (healthy) beverage, its high selling value, the importation of barely recognizable raw product (i.e., crushed), and the scarcity of studies concerning adulterants or contamination. The DNA Verity Test includes both the sequencing of DNA barcoding markers and genotyping of labeled-PCR DNA barcoding fragments for each sample analyzed. This protocol (DVT) was successively applied to verify the authenticity of 32 commercial teas (simple or admixture), and the main results can be summarized as follows: (1) the DVT protocol is suitable to detect adulteration in tea matrices (contaminations or absence of certified ingredients), and the method can ...
