The culture of the ethnic Khmer is fairly homogeneous throughout their geographic range. Regional dialects exist, but are mutually intelligible. The standard is based on the dialect spoken throughout the Central Plain,[29] a region encompassed by the northwest and central provinces. The varieties of Khmer spoken in this region are representative of the speech of the majority of the population. A unique and immediately recognizable dialect has developed in Phnom Penh that, due to the citys status as the national capital, has been modestly affected by recent French and Vietnamese influence. Other dialects are Northern Khmer dialect, called Khmer Surin by Cambodians, spoken by over a million Khmer native to Northeast Thailand and Khmer Krom spoken by the millions of Khmer native to the Mekong Delta regions of Vietnam adjacent to Cambodia and their descendants abroad. A little-studied dialect known as Western Khmer, or Cardamom Khmer, is spoken by a small, isolated population in the Cardamom ...

Standard Khmer, or Central Khmer, the language as taught in Cambodian schools and used by the media, is based on the dialect spoken throughout the Central Plain,[20] a region encompassed by the northwest and central provinces.. Northern Khmer (called Khmer Surin in Khmer) refers to the dialects spoken by many in several border provinces of present-day northeast Thailand. After the fall of the Khmer Empire in the early 15th century, the Dongrek Mountains served as a natural border leaving the Khmer north of the mountains under the sphere of influence of the Kingdom of Lan Xang. The conquests of Cambodia by Naresuan the Great for Ayutthaya furthered their political and economic isolation from Cambodia proper, leading to a dialect that developed relatively independently from the midpoint of the Middle Khmer period.[21] This has resulted in a distinct accent influenced by the surrounding tonal languages Lao and Thai, lexical differences, and phonemic differences in both vowels and distribution of ...

BACKGROUND: Anemia is highly prevalent in Cambodian women and children, but data on causes of anemia are scarce. We performed a national micronutrient survey in children and women that was linked to the Cambodian Demographic Health Survey 2014 (CDHS-2014) to assess the prevalence of micronutrient deficiency, hemoglobin disorders and intestinal parasite infection.. METHODS: One-sixth of households from the CDHS-2014 were selected for a follow-up visit for the micronutrient survey. Households were visited from two weeks to two months after the CDHS-2014 visit. Data on micronutrient status were available for 1512 subjects (792 children and 720 women).. RESULTS: Anemia was found in 43% of the women and 53% of the children. Hemoglobin disorders affected ,50% of the population, with Hemoglobin-E the most prevalent disorder. Deficiencies of iron (ferritin , 15 g/L), vitamin A (retinol-binding-protein (RBP) , 0.70 mol/L) or vitamin B12 (,150 pmol/L) were not prevalent in the women (,5% for all), whereas ...
A Cambodian Court of Appeal has upheld a 27-year jail term for a Nigerian drug convict, Mr Precious Chineme Nwoko.. Nwoko was sentenced to 27 years imprisonment in 2014 by a trial court in Cambodia after he was linked with several Australian women arrested for being his mules.. The intermediate appellate court also confirmed the prison terms slammed on a Frenchwoman, and another Australian.. The trio were all convicted for trying to smuggle heroin to Australia.. Judge Pol Sam Ouen said the sentences given by the Phnom Penh Municipal Court in May 2014 to then-19-year-old Frenchwoman Charlene Savarino, 41-year-old Ann Yoshe Taylor of Australia and 23-year-old Precious Nwoko of Nigeria were correct.. The lower court had sentenced Savarino to 25 years in prison, Taylor to 23 years and Nwoko to 27 years.. Savarino and Taylor were arrested in September 2013 at Phnom Penh International Airport after police found 2.2 kilograms (4.8 pounds) of heroin in Taylors luggage as they prepared to fly together ...

PHNOM PENH, CAMBODIA - High on a Cambodian cliff, the Preah Vihear temple has weathered war and territorial disputes. Now its at the center of a political tug-of-war in neighboring Thailand.. As it has over the centuries, the ancient temple is fueling nationalist sentiment on both sides of the border, and opposition supporters in the Thai parliament are raising it as a reason for why the prime minister should step down.. Thai Prime Minister Samak Sundaravej recently endorsed Cambodias bid to register the temple as a UNESCO World Heritage site - enraging opposition lawmakers who say he is yielding national sovereignty to Cambodia.. Never mind that the International Court of Justice awarded the temple and the land it stands on to Cambodia in 1962 - it remains an issue in both countries.. "The Preah Vihear temple is part of a wounded history of Thailand and Cambodia," said Charnvit Kasetsiri, a historian at Bangkoks Thammasat University. "It was used to stir up a nationalist movement during ...
From 1970 to 1975, after the collapse of the Sangkum Reas Niyum regime at the end of 1969, Cambodia was ruled by the Khmer Republic led by Lon Nol. Both the social and economic sectors in the country eventually collapsed and their collapse was irretrievable. Various ministries and institutions were the subject of controversy, and all sectors were affected by war. Because of the political instability and insecurity, many civil servants and employees had resigned or worked inattentively. At the same time, the potable water treatment process and business of PPWSA was also adversely affected due to the inability to implement planned projects and programs. Furthermore, the plan to convert PPWSA to an autonomous national enterprise was also postponed ...
Maternal and child undernutrition are a significant problem in the developing world, with serious consequences for human health and socio-economic development. In Cambodia, 55% of children, 43% of women of reproductive age, and 50% of pregnant women are anemic. Current prevention and control practices rely on supplementation with iron pills or large-scale food fortification, neither of which are affordable or feasible in rural Cambodia. In the study areas, 97% of women did not meet their daily iron requirements. The current research focuses on the design and evaluation of an innovative iron supplementation technique. A culturally acceptable, inexpensive and lightweight iron ingot was designed to resemble a fish species considered lucky in Khmer culture. The ingot, referred to as try sabay or happy fish, was designed to supply iron at a slow, steady rate. Iron leaching was observed in water and soup samples prepared with the iron fish when used concurrently with an acidifier. More than 75% of ...
Background: Cambodian Americans have high rates of chronic hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and livercancer. There is very limited information about the utility of community health worker (CHW) approaches tocancer education for Asian American men. We have previously reported our positive findings from a trial ofCHW education about HBV for Cambodian Americans who had never been tested for HBV. This report describessimilarities and differences between the outcomes of our CHW HBV educational intervention among CambodianAmerican men and women. Methods: The study group for this analysis included 87 individuals (39 men and 48women) who were randomized to the experimental (HBV education) arm of our trial, participated in the CHWeducational intervention, and provided follow-up data six months post-intervention. We examined HBV testingrates at follow-up, changes in HBV-related knowledge between baseline and follow-up, and barriers to HBVtesting (that were reported to CHWs) by gender. Results: At follow-up, 15%
What did a typical day look like? A typical day started with a cold shower because the apartment had no hot water. Wed have brekky (with plenty of fruit and traditional Cambodian food) made by Danei, our cook. We would then have a 30-minute tuk tuk ride to the hospital, holding on tight to our bags so that they wouldnt be stolen by ride-by theives. At placement where we would observe the doctors and nurses and help out where we could. After placement we had plenty of time to explore Phnom Penh with the other students from the apartment. We went to the Royal Palace, the Killing Fields, S21, the Riverside, Friends café, central market, night markets, roof top bars, swimming pools, and many more places around Phnom Penh. What health conditions and surgeries did you see? In the ED, I saw lots of trauma from motor vehicle accidents because traffic laws are virtually non-existent. A large number of patients had alcohol withdrawal and presented to the ED acutely agitated or seizing. An overwhelming ...
She returned to Phnom Penh and was reunited with her husband just as the Vietnamese Army came to kill any Khmer Rouge remaining in the city. Most Khmer Rouge pretended to be ordinary citizens, and this enraged Anna. But she didnt point these people out to the Vietnamese soldiers. "I kept it all in here," she says, pointing at her heart. Anna was afraid that she would eventually be killed by the Vietnamese since she worked for the Khmer Rouge, so she hid in one of the many abandoned houses in the city. The Vietnamese found her after four days and three nights but, because she spoke fluent Vietnamese, she convinced them that she had nothing to do with the Khmer Rouge. Shortly after, she worked for the interim Vietnamese puppet government for six months, and began an import business from Saigon until 1990. In 1991, she started to work with the Red Cross where her major responsibility was for the security of expatriate staff members and finished her work there in 2004 ...
Most state schools in the areas where Khmer Leou are concentrated continue to teach exclusively in Khmer. Because many if not most indigenous children do not speak or understand this language fluently, there results in their case a much higher than average drop-out rate. A few schools teaching partially in local indigenous languages have started to operate on an experimental level; mainly this is through the efforts of local and international NGOs rather than the state authorities (though the state was involved from 2003 in three pilot bilingual education projects in the Khmer Leou regions of north-east Cambodia). The government of Cambodia announced at the end of 2006 that it would offer some form of bilingual education for indigenous students up to grade three in five of the north-east provinces. In general, indigenous communities remain poorly served with regard to education, and there is a lack of easily accessible state schools in many parts of the north-east after grades 2 or 3.. The ...
An entertainment worker explains the value of ACTED-PSF services during a mobile visit to a Phnom Penh karaoke bar: "If the visits were in danger of being discontinued that would be terrible news. The consultations are very important for my friends and I. We are thankful for the condoms distributed and when I faced a problem with an STI, ACTED-PSF provided me with a consultation, diagnosed me and gave me medication which helped me get better. I was even referred to another clinic for VCCT (Voluntary and Confidential Counseling and Testing) where I was tested for HIV." Simple but essential information can make a positive impact in the lives of these vulnerable women.. ACTED-PSF works through mobile intervention teams, comprised of medical staff and outreach workers to provide regular education, counseling and on site examinations to entertainment workers in Phnom Penh. (STI treatment is internationally recognized for its role in HIV prevention). In order to reach these vulnerable women, the ...

The alleged leader of a major drug-trafficking ring died in a Phnom Penh hospital on Tuesday, just three months after his imprisonment, officials said on Wednesday.. Syla Loy was arrested, charged and provisionally detained in May after drug raids in Phnom Penh and Ratanakkiri province netted more than 60 kg of heroin and crystal methamphetamine. Along with alleged accomplice Loung Sopha, he faced 20 years to life in prison and fines of up to $25,000 if convicted.. But Syla Loy died from encephalitis and HIV at the Khmer-Soviet Friendship Hospital on Tuesday afternoon, one day after being transferred from Prey Sar prison, according to Sorn Keo, spokesman and deputy director of the governments general department of prisons correctional department.. Mr. Keo said his family had already retrieved the body and held a traditional funeral for Syla Loy, who was an oknha-an honorific bestowed on businesspeople who make donations of $500,000 to the state.. Mr. Keo said he was not sure of the prisoners ...

International labor migration has become an increasingly common livelihood strategy in rural Cambodia, in some villages becoming a defining and normative part of community life. This dissertation is an ethnographic study of one such rural community, where migration to Thailand has become a primary livelihood strategy over the past decade. Drawing on three years of fieldwork in Chanleas Dai, a commune (khum) in Northwest Cambodia, my research explores the complexities of the migration decision-making process, and the meanings of migration for rural households. This work is motivated by debates within the dialogues of migration and development, most of which seek to understand the potential for migration to promote development by focusing on the impacts of migration. My work departs from previous studies by focusing explicitly on decision-making, seeking to understand how and why families make developmentally important migration decisions. This is a critical area of inquiry, as the potential that ...

Farrow: First of all, the people of Phnom Penh have been extraordinarily supportive in all kinds of ways...The trouble we experienced this morning...none of it come from the people themselves. Our intention was to have a ceremony which is again is to light the flame. Each time we say this prayer...Its intended to represent those who perished, all those who were lost but also to celebrate the courage of those who survived, and the commitment that we share for an end to mass atrocities everywhere. So far our flame lighting ceremonies have gone very smoothly and very movingly. The reasons are best known to themselves. Our permission to have this ceremony on the sight of the memorial was revoked. Yesterday we found that out....So we restructured our ceremony to eliminate the flame and make the flame a flower. As we were not allowed on the premises of the genocide museum we would leave our flowers just to honor the victims and the survivors, but then the streets were cordoned off so it was ...

IntroductionA crisis team management (CTM) simulation course was developed by volunteers from Health Volunteers Overseas for physicians and nurses at Angkor Hospital for Children (AHC) in Siem Reap, Cambodia. The framework for the course was adapted from crisis resource management (1, 2), crisis team training (3), and TeamSTEPPs© models (4). The CTM course focused on teaching physicians and nurses on the development of team performance knowledge, skills, and attitudes. Challenges to providing this course at AHC included availability of simulation equipment, cultural differences in learning, and language barriers. The purpose of this project was to evaluate the impact of a CTM simulation course at AHC on attitudes and perceptions of participants on concepts related to team performance.MethodsEach of the CTM courses consisted of three lectures, including team performance concepts, communication, and debriefing followed by rotation through four simulation scenarios. The evaluation instrument used to
Artemisinin-based combination therapies (ACTs) are the first-line treatments for Plasmodium falciparum malaria worldwide. In Western Cambodia, artemisinin resistance has been defined as a long half-life of parasite clearance (T1/2) in response to an artemisinin, given orally for uncomplicated malaria. We hypothesize that this artemisinin resistance phenotype compromises the efficacy of ACTs. The primary objective of this study is to compare P. falciparum recrudescence rates in Western, Northern and Eastern Cambodia, following dihydroartemisinin-piperaquine (DHA-PPQ) treatment. The secondary objective of this study is to determine whether parasite recrudescence is associated with long T1/2. In the Parasite Recrudescence Study, patients with uncomplicated malaria will receive directly-observed treatment with DHA-PPQ over 3 days. We will follow these patients weekly for 9 weeks to identify those with recurrent parasitemia and use genotyping methods to distinguish recrudescences from reinfections. We ...
There are more than 1,000 temples in Angkor which have been reclaimed from the jungle and some are magnificent architectural gems to rival the best around the world. Recent Satellite photos have revealed that Angkor spread over 400 square miles making it the largest preindustrial center in the world. Here are some of the best. The immense Khmer empire from the 9th to the 15th C century stretched over present day Cambodia, Thailand, Laos, Vietnam all the way to India. At Angkor it created a sophisticated network of hydraulic canals and rice paddies that supported over a million people and left architectural monuments that are as overwhelming as ancient Egypt. The ruins of Angkor have been declared a Unesco World Heritage site. In 1431 enemy armies invaded and sacked Angkor. The population left , the region was abandoned and most of this incredible culture was swallowed up by the jungle. In October 2010, I had visited famous Angkor temples of Cambodia. There is a museum known as " Landmine Museum" situated on the road towards the famous temple of "Bante Strei." Cambodias deadly relationship with landmines had began in 1975 when Chinese backed Khmer Rouge or the Communist party of Cambodia, captured power in Phnom Penh under leadership of Pol Pot. During next four years, the poor people of Combodia were subjected to leave their homes, work in fields and were tortured at the slightest suspicion of being anti communist. The war ended only when in 1978, Vietnamese forces again entered Cambodia and defeated Khmer Rouge. During these four years of war, landmines were laid all over Cambodia. Thousands of innocent Cambodians have fallen as victims to these landmines since those years and many have lost their limbs. There rehabilitation has been a major challenge faced by the country. I saw a troupe of musicians disabled by landmines performing near famous temple of Ta Prohm. ...

In 1970, though, Sihanouk was overthrown in a U.S.-backed coup that came while he was abroad on a trip that included a stay at a French weight-loss clinic. He spent years of lonely, if lavish, exile in Beijing.. Seeking to regain the throne, he joined the communist Khmer Rouge-dominated rebels after his overthrow. Only a few years earlier, his government had been suppressing them in the city and countryside.. They had numbered only a few hundred until the coup, but his presence gave them a legitimacy they had never before enjoyed.. The alliance left Sihanouk open to subsequent criticism that he opened the way for the Khmer Rouge ...
The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious. It is the source of all true art and science. Albert Einstein. We travelled to Siem Reap/Cambodia to explore the mystical temple ruins of the powerful Angkor dynasty, which was ruled by warrior-kings. Angkor was the capital of the Khmer kingdom, which had been established in the 9th century. It was the biggest pre-industrial town. About 1 million people lived there. At its peak, the empire covered much of what today is Cambodia, Laos, Thailand and southern Vietnam.. The Khmer culture had been shaped by Hinduism. By the 12th century, most of the Khmer empire was Mahayana Buddhist.. Angkor was built with sandstone, a rare material for construction. The Khmer were masters in the art of stone carving. Not only the temple walls, but almost all pillar and stone surfaces are carved with beautiful Hinduist and Buddhist symbolic art and dancing goddesses, which are supposed to have ultimate power over both immortal and mortal men due to their ...
