This study is designed as a nonrandomized, single-blind, sham-controlled trail in which willing participants will receive a 5 day course of twice daily caloric vestibular stimulation (CVS) or sham treatment. CVS involves twice daily sessions of CVS each lasting 15 minutes. The week before the intervention baseline characterization of mood and substance craving will be conducted using standard mood and substance use questionnaires. Prior to treatment beginning participants will undergo structural and functional MR imaging. Participants will also undergo a standard battery of questionnaires, including cognitive testing, mood and affect surveys, and surveys specific to SUD. During each of the 5 treatment days the participants will be asked to fill out questionnaires related to mood and craving symptoms. Participants will be blinded to sham stimulation or the standard CVS protocol. At the end of the 5 day course participants will be scanned again in MRI and asked to fill out the same battery of ...
An isolated nodular infarction presenting as an isolated vertigo with unidirectional, gaze-fixed nystagmus has not been previously reported. We reported a patient with cerebellar infarction who presented with purely isolated vertigo, ipsilesional, spontaneous nystagmus, and contralesional axial lateropulsion without usual symptoms or signs of cerebellar dysfunction. An MRI of the brain showed a small infarct selectively involving the nodulus. A pure vestibular syndrome in our patient may be explained by an ipsilateral involvement of nodulo-vestibular inhibitory projection to vestibular nucleus. Clinicians should be aware of the possibility of a nodulus infarction in patients with an acute vestibular syndrome, even if the pattern of nystagmus and lateropulsion is typical of vestibular neuritis. ...

Objective: Vestibular signals are involved in higher cortical functions like spatial orientation and its disorders. Vestibular dysfunction contributes, for example, to spatial neglect which can be transiently improved by caloric stimulation. The exact roles and mechanisms of the vestibular and visual systems for the recovery of neglect are not yet known. Methods: Resting-state functional connectivity (fc) magnetic resonance imaging was recorded in a patient with hemispatial neglect during the acute phase and after recovery 6 months later following a right middle cerebral artery infarction before and after caloric vestibular stimulation. Seeds in the vestibular [parietal operculum (OP2)], the parietal [posterior parietal cortex (PPC);7A, hIP3], and the visual cortex (VC) were used for the analysis. Results: During the acute stage after caloric stimulation the fc of the right OP2 to the left OP2, the anterior cingulum, and the para/hippocampus was increased bilaterally (i.e., the vestibular ...

Dear Former Student,. Please feel free to enter the bars and enjoy yourself. It may be best to go with a friend, however. They will help to provide a safe zone and may help to prevent some trouble. They may dare you to go up and speak to the hot looking girl standing off by herself. (Say Thanks Napolean if they do so.) They may help pour you into the cab for the ride home.. The purpose of going to bars is to have fun and enjoy yourself. Do you like to dance? Do you like to meet new people and friends, hang out, and relax? Do you like to drink? Do you like to watch big nose guys get hit on by gorgeous girls? Then you want to go to bars!. Note that the dangers in bars are not required, but are free choices. (Unless you go to a place with huge cover charge to pay for the view. THAT may get you into trouble.) Most trouble in bars will come from drinking too much, spending too much, or talking too much or to the wrong person, or playing house with someone who provides something to remember her ...

We often think of the body as a system that runs on caloric energy obtained through the carbohydrates, proteins, and fats that make up our diets. This is true
The problem that I see with most fad diets is that they sacrifice balance. For example, on a low or no-fat diet, you could eat a 50 lb. bag of sugar - or on a low or no-carb diet, you could eat a 50 lb. can of lard. In both cases you are within the parameters of the diet, but its not very healthy. The human body developed a taste for fats and sugars because those two nutrients provided the highest per unit caloric value. Marketing, especially snack and fast-food marketing have taken advantage of these factors with products that mislead the consumer, i.e.; low-fat products that are high in sugar, and low-carb products that are high in fat. (And dont get me started on salt!) (Last moment note: this also ties-in with your observation that _un-healthy_ food is cheaper than healthier alternatives ...

Uner Tan Syndrome consists of two main symptoms: quadrupedal gait and primitive cognitive abilities including language and conscious experience. To assess the central mechanisms involved in this syndrome, we performed MRI and PET scans on affected and unaffected individuals from both families. All affected individuals were also subjected to neurological examination. To assess the integrity of the peripheral and central vestibular system, Baranys caloric test was applied to the affected individuals. Brain MRI and PET scans were performed on normal subjects (N = 7) and patients (N = 7). Right- and left-cerebral and cerebellar areas, including the vermial and callosal areas, were measured on the MRI scans using a computer cursor. Quadrupedal gait, mental retardation, dysartric speech, nystagmus, severe truncal ataxia, hyperreflexia, astasia and abasia were observed in the affected individuals from both families. Cerebellum and vermis were atrophic in the MRI and PET scans of the first family. In ...

I really hate the term DIET. The terms eating clean and paleo have also been exhausted and become so cliche. People get way too worked up about what foods are considered clean or from the earth, when it comes down to the nitty gritty just focus on caloric intake/expenditure. There are some strong/shredded people out there that have never even considered a paleo style diet and just eat whatever theyre craving and look phenomenal - lucky bastards. If youre not that lucky, it might be time to start setting up some goals for daily calorie consumption and also lift some heavy sh$t with intensity. Life is too short to argue about food, eat whatever you like, just remember that if you cant see your toes- your doing something wrong ...
or contaminate them by the slow poisoning of the blood stream. After digestion, everything from fruits and vegetables, to sugars and processed food, find their way into your bloodstream. Your blood acts as fuel to charge cells carrying vital nutrients to each of your organs. The better you nourish these cells, the better they function. Creating balance within this massive operating system is key for overall health and vitality.. The pH scale serves as a measuring stick to how well your body is balanced. Although the scale ranges from 0-14, the human body can only function in a very narrow and slightly alkaline range, from 7.4 to 7.6. If ever your pH falls outside of this range toward acidity, illness occurs. As every food has a caloric value and nutritional content, they also contain an intrinsic ability to be either alkaline-forming or acid-forming. When you consume a lot of acid-forming foods, your body pulls nutrients from other locations to correct the imbalance, causing further nutrient and ...
Gabriel not only wins the thread, he laps the field. I use a website called loseit.com (free in its basic form, which is what I use) for weight control. What loseit does is give you an estimated resting calorie intake to maintain your current weight , i.e., any activity other than sitting on the couch uses excess calories over the resting burn rate. Food caloric values are entered for what you eat, and exercise burns are also considered, so that the average net calorie intake determines your expected weight loss/gain if the net is postive (gain) or negative (loss.) I have found this to be right on as regards weight management. ...

Materials and Methods: Meteorological data from 2004 to 2009 were obtained from the web-based Monthly Weather Reports of the Meteorological Administration database. Patients with vestibular neuritis who visited Incheon St. Marys Hospital during this same period and presented the precise day on which the symptoms appeared were included in this study involving a retrospective chart review. Twelve meteorological factors were analyzed between the days when vestibular neuritis onset was observed and the days when vestibular neuritis did not occur. Time lags (D-1-D-7) which mean 1-7 days before the onset were included to assess a possible delayed meteorological effect in relation to the onset of vestibular neuritis. Seasonal incidence of vestibular neuritis and a relationship with seasonal patterns of weather parameters were evaluated. ...

In the following project, we explored the relationships between age, vestibulopathy and stability control, in order to determine the age and vestibulopathy-related effects on stability control, and to establish if a relationship existed between static and dynamic stability task performance. The first study examined the response to repeated trip perturbations of healthy middle aged adults and vestibulopathy patients, the second examined feedforward adaptation of gait in young, middle aged and older adults to a sustained mechanical perturbation and the third examined the relationship between standing balance and recovery following a tripping perturbation in vestibulopathy patients. The results showed that vestibulopathy is related to a diminished ability to control and recover gait stability after an unexpected perturbation, and to a deficient reactive adaptation potential. With ageing, the ability to recalibrate locomotor commands to control stability is preserved, although this recalibration may ...

Bilateral vestibulopathy was recently defined by the Barany society. Unlike in unilateral loss of vestibular function where compensation is typical, many patients with bilateral vestibulopathy experience chronic oscillopsia due to failure of the vestibulo-ocular reflex and gait instability due to failure of vestibulo-spinal reflexes. Other vestibular projections such as those to higher level cognitive processes like spatio-temporal navigation and autonomic reflexes may also be affected and are active areas of investigation. Bilateral vestibulopathy is estimated to affect 21 in 100,000 people and in its most severe forms can have profound impacts on quality of life and lead to increased risk of falls. There are numerous potential contributing factors including aminoglycoside antibiotics like gentamicin, but also genetic causes such as mutations in the COCH gene or syndromes such as neurofibromatosis type 2 or cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy, vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS). Its prevalence may be
Vibration Tests of Full-Scale Earth Dam. Extensive full-scale dynamic tests, including ambient (unique in earth dam research) and forced vibration as well as popper tests were conducted on the Santa Felicia earth dam in Southern California. For the forced vibration tests, the dam was excited into resonance in both the upstream-downstream and longitudinal directions. During the ambient test, the naturally occurring vibrations of the dam were measured. The popper test involved the use of pressure waves originating from a controlled, submerged release of gas. During the tests, three-dimensional measurements of the motions of approximately 25 stations along the crest and seven stations on the downstream slope were recorded and then analyzed in both time and frequency domains. Modes of vibrations and associated natural frequencies as well as damping ratios were determined.
There is usually a degree of systemic illness with fever, malaise, myalgia and gastrointestinal upset, suggesting that enteric viruses may be implicated. Vertigo, often with a marked positional element, accompanies the acute illness and may persist for days or several weeks, and sometimes relapses occur. Nystagmus is present in the acute phase, but there is no disturbance of hearing. Caloric tests may show impaired vestibular function on one or both sides ...

This review demonstrates that from the limited data identified there is a good level of knowledge of the two commonest stroke symptoms and of the need for an emergency response among the general public and at risk patients. There was a tendency for patients and witnesses to contact their general practitioner rather than call for an ambulance. Recognition that the symptoms were due stroke or TIA did not influence time to presentation. Very few studies examined the beliefs and attitudes of the public towards stroke and its treatment, factors that could be important in understanding why people do or do not respond to the symptoms of stroke as an emergency.. Although the public are most likely to recognise unilateral weakness and/or numbness and speech disturbance which are the most common symptoms of stroke, this conclusion is based upon data from 1071 participants in three studies and there are issues around the representativeness of the samples. The majority of the general public regard stroke as ...

Im probably going to review this book (The Paleo Diet, Loren Cordain) when I finish it, and that will include all the negative bits, of which there are a number. However, Ive read enough that Im convinced its an essential book that everyone interested in optimal health ought to read. In spite of the silly (and misguided, in my view) saturated fat-phobia (oops, there I go...), its very valuable in view of understanding ourselves in terms of the vast and varied fossil record, i.e., human evolution in the context of diet (and most notably: how diet drove the evolution), and how utterly-woefully far weve come. A hint: fully 60% of the caloric value in the average American diet (grains, legumes, dairy, refined sugars, vegetable oils and all their derivatives) was not consumed by our primitive ancestors -- AT ALL! Not a bit. Not even one ounce. This is faint recollection (feel free to correct), but when you compare that 60% with what would have been eaten in its place by a primitive ancestor 50,000
