All californium isotopes are radioactive; the long-lived isotopes are produced from berkelium-249 or from californium-249. They are californium-249 (351-year half-life), californium-250 (13-year half-life), californium-251 (898-year half-life), and californium-252 (2.645-year half-life). The isotope californium-249 has been used in tracer levels and microgram amounts to investigate the chemistry of californium (which exhibits an oxidation state of +3 in aqueous solution) and for preparing microgram quantities of compounds such as the oxychloride CfOCl, the oxides Cf2O3 and CfO2, and the trichloride CfCl3. The dihalides CfCl2, CfBr2, and CfI2 have been made. There is also some evidence from electrochemical studies in solutions for a +2 state. Metallic californium has been prepared and is structurally similar to metallic americium, curium, berkelium, and most lanthanoid metals. ...

Sepsis and septic shock result from an exacerbated systemic inflammatory reaction to infection. Their incidence is rising, and they have recently become the main cause of death in intensive care units. Septic shock is defined as sepsis accompanied by life-threatening refractory hypotension, for which excessive nitric oxide (NO), produced by inducible NO synthase iNOS, is thought responsible. LPS, a vital outer membrane component of Gram-negative bacteria, mimics most of the septic effects and is widely used as a model for septic shock. TLR4 is the signal-transducing receptor for LPS, evidenced by the resistance of TLR4-deficient C3H/HeJ and C57BL/10ScNJ mice. As expected, we found that TLR4 deficiency precludes LPS-induced cytokine production, independent of the purity of the LPS preparation. However, various conventional LPS preparations induced NO in TLR4-deficient mice to the same level as in control animals, while ultrapure LPS did not, indicating the presence of NO-producing contaminant(s). ...
One microgram of 252-Cf emits 2.314 × 10^6 fast neutrons/s with a 2.645-year half-life. Typical costs for loan and return of a ,7μg source total ~$11,000. (This fee is waived under the University Loan Program for university research and teaching applications.) Similar costs for a source in the range of 7μg to 3 mg (neutron intensities ranging up to 7 × 10^9/s ) total ~$20,000, while sources in the 3- to 5-mg range total ~$28,000. Loan/return costs of pre-existing sources from inventory containing ,5 mg total ~$32,000. Sources containing ,8 mg typically require custom fabrication, but a source containing the maximum permitted 252-Cf content of 50 mg (neutron intensity ~10^11/s) can be obtained for ~$51,000. None of these costs include transportation charges. Sources with neutron intensities ,10^8/s can be obtained at lower cost from commercial vendors, but potential costs for end-of-use source disposal should be evaluated. Loan costs for high-intensity sources compare very favorably with ...

In the past, scientists used a stationary neutron source to calibrate the reactor and to make sure it was accurately measuring emitted neutrons, but that doesnt recreate how neutrons actually bounce around. Tossing a lump of californium on the moving train improved the accuracy 10-fold, according to the scientists.. Researchers at Princeton used toy trains for calibration decades ago in an older reactor, but anytime scientists build radioactive trains, people tend to pay attention.. An no, the train didnt glow bright green or gain super powers-californium is only slightly radioactive, after all, and the toy train is now chugging around the Christmas tree in the labs lobby.. These particular particles pass through most measuring systems undetected, but the FNS uses a gate and capture technique that slows down neutrons and captures them in special glass fibers loaded with lithium. That process produces a unique flash of light, which custom electronics in the FNS recognize and analyze to determine radiation level. This technology is less susceptible to false triggers from other forms of radiation and can significantly improve reliable identification of neutrons in the mixed radiation field found in deep space. This improved measurement will help protect crews on future exploration missions ...
These conjugates can have the carbohydrate moiety linked directly to the oligonucleotide or can be linked to a lipid or a peptide/protein. Due to the diversity of carbohydrate receptors present on the cells surface, oligosaccharides are useful for targeting conjugates to specific cells. Conjugation of antisense ODNs to a neoglycoprotein in which the protein has several mannose-6-phosphate residues, is readily internalized by cells having a receptor for this ligand on their surfaces. ...
Two assumptions are commonly made in the estimation of genetic risk: (1) that the seven specific loci in the mouse constitute a suitable basis for extrapolation to genetic disease in humans, and (2) that mutations are induced by radiation damage (energy-loss events leading to double-stranded damage) occurring within the gene and are induced linearly with dose, at least at low doses. Recent evidence on the mutability of repeat sequences is reviewed that suggests that neither of these assumptions is as well founded as we like to think. Repeat sequences are common in the human genome, and alterations in them may have health consequences. Many of them are unstable, both spontaneously and after irradiation. The fact that changes in DNA repeat sequences can clearly arise as a result of radiation damage outside the sequence concerned and the likely involvement of some sort of signal transduction process mean that the nature of the radiation dose response cannot be assumed. While the time has not come ...
The stability of the HIV-1 core in the cytoplasm is crucial for productive HIV-1 infection. Mutations that stabilize or destabilize the core showed defects in HIV-1 reverse transcription and infection. We developed a novel and simple assay to measure stability of in vitro-assembled HIV-1 CA-NC complexes. This assay allowed us to demonstrate that cytosolic extracts strongly stabilize the HIV-1 core (Fricke et al., J Virol 87:10587-10597, 2013). By using our novel assay, one can measure the ability of different drugs to modulate the stability of in vitro-assembled HIV-1 CA-NC complexes, such as PF74, CAP-1, IXN-053, cyclosporine A, Bi2, and the peptide CAI. We also found that purified CPSF6 (1-321) protein stabilizes in vitro-assembled HIV-1 CA-NC complexes (Fricke et al., J Virol 87:10587-10597, 2013). Here we describe in detail the use of this capsid stability assay. We believe that our assay can be a powerful tool to assess HIV-1 capsid stability in vitro. ...
In the course of this review, my usual carry Glock 19 went off line and needed some small parts replaced. While awaiting replacement, I swapped to my Glock 17. Lo and behold I found myself comfortably carrying the larger gun without much difficulty, and have done so for the last few weeks.. I have successfully concealed the gun in this position from my office staff, patients and hoplophobic wife. Hugs can occur-so long as I am offset a little to the right. The only time I was ever made was when one of the kids, whose head is about waist high, ran to sneak attack me with a hug and rang his bell on the chunk of metal on the waistband. God knows what he made of that . . .. AIWB carry has another, far more significant downside: the possibility of shooting oneself during a transition.. While shooting oneself always sucks, there are places where bullet wounds are eminently survivable (e.g., the buttocks). The femoral artery is not one of them. By the same token, you really need to pay attention when ...

The even-even N=90 isotones with Z=60-66 are known to undergo a first order phase transition. Such a phase transition in atomic nuclei is characterized by a sudden change of the shape of the nucleus due to changes in the location of the potential minimum. In these proceedings we report a measurement of the B4/2 ratio of 148Ce, which will probe the location of the low-Z boundary of the N=90 phase transitional region. The measured B4/2 value is compared to the prediction from the X(5) symmetry within the interacting boson model at the critical point between the geometrical limits of vibrators and rigid/axial rotors. The EXILL&FATIMA campaign took place at the high-flux reactor of the Institut Laue Langevin, Grenoble, were 235U and 241Pu fission fragments were measured by a hybrid spectrometer consisting of high-resolution HPGe and fast LaBr3(Ce)-scintillator detectors. The fast LaBr3(Ce) detectors in combination with the generalized centroid difference method allowed lifetime measurements in the ...

But, running the experiments and collecting the data were not small tasks.. After years of working with the U.S. Department of Energy, Albrecht-Schmitt obtained 5 milligrams of californium costing $1.4 million, paid for through an endowment to the university in honor of retired professor Gregory Choppin.. But that tiny, expensive element has opened a whole new world of nuclear chemistry.. Were changing how people look at californium and how it can be used, Albrecht-Schmitt said.. All of the experiments were conducted at Florida State, but Albrecht-Schmitt also worked with theorists and scientists from nine universities and institutes, including Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which supplied the californium.. David A. Dixon, professor of chemistry at the University of Alabama, and his graduate student, Ted Garner, provided the calculations and theory on why the californium could bond in such unique ways, while scientists at Argonne National Laboratory helped correlate the theory with the ...

Carbohydrate - receptor interactions are an integral part of biological events. They play an important role in many cellular processes, such as cell-cell adhesion, cell differentiation and in-cell signaling. Carbohydrates can interact with a receptor by using several types of intermolecular interactions. One of the most important is the interaction of a carbohydrates apolar part with aromatic amino acid residues, known as dispersion interaction or CH/π interaction. In the study presented here, we attempted for the first time to quantify how the CH/π interaction contributes to a more general carbohydrate - protein interaction. We used a combined experimental approach, creating single and double point mutants with high level computational methods, and applied both to Ralstonia solanacearum (RSL) lectin complexes with α-l-Me-fucoside. Experimentally measured binding affinities were compared with computed carbohydrate-aromatic amino acid residue interaction energies. Experimental binding affinities for

Our interest in the title compound, C36H27N3O9, arises from its use as an important precursor in the synthesis of artificial receptors based on trimethoxybenzene-derived core (for a review on acyclic carbohydrate receptors containing a trimethyl- or triethylbenzene scaffold, see: Mazik, 2009). The title compound crystallizes in the space group P-1 with one molecule in the asymmetric part of the unit cell. The interplanar angles between the phthalimido residues are 6.67 (4) (B/C), 48.86 (3) (B/D) and 53.23 (3)° (C/D). According to the three-dimensional arrangement of substituents around the benzene ring the present conformational isomer can be named 1-up, 3,5-down tris(phthalimidomethyl), 2,4-up, 6-down- trimethoxybenzene. The molecular conformation is stabilized by seven C-H···O hydrogen bonds (Desiraju, 2002; Desiraju & Steiner, 1999; Mazik et al., 2001; Steiner, 2002) with phthalimido O atoms O(4), O(7), O(8), O(9) and the ether O atoms O(2), O(3) acting as acceptors [C-H···Ophthal 2.38 ...

Today, after 20 years of want, I can scratch this off; Michele and I saw Sturgill Simpson play at Red Rocks! It was positively amazing. I had read so much about how incredible and pristine the sound is but to actually hear it is another thing all together.. The wait was worth it and the hype is real.. Admittedly, I was pretty disappointed to find that Sturgill isnt touring with the horns or strings that were so prevalent on Sailors Guide to Earth (not to mention, one of my favorite things about the album). But good gawd they rocked out every song with just a 4 piece band. Clearly, its a new direction, but a direction that I can get behind.. Wha-hooooooooo-heeeeew!. For a portion of the concert, it was just Sturgill and a guitar. Between the music, Michele, and the stars it was blissfully ethereal when he sang Just Let Go and Breakers Roar.. ...

This invention relates to a method of forming a selectively perforate membrane suitable for high resolution screen printing by homogeneously irradiating a sheet of synthetic resin, e.g., a polycarbonate resin, with heavy fission fragments whereupon the sheet is selectively irradiated in an oxygen atmosphere with electromagnetic radiation less than 4,000A (or a high intensity electron beam) to enhance the etch rate of those damage tracks lying within the electromagnetically irradiated area of the sheet. Apertures less than 200A in diameter then are etched through the sheet in areas of dual irradiation whereupon etching is abruptly terminated and the sheet is annealed at a temperature above 80 DEG C to obliterate fission track damage. The selectively apertured sheet then is etched again to enlarge the apertures to a diameter between 1,000A and 100,000A.
By Reta McDermott. Christopher Brav from the Mathematical Institute at the University of Oxford will present Ping-Pong and Thin Monodromy at 2:30 p.m. today in 122 Cardwell Hall. Abstract: Monodromy groups of low order hypergeometric differential equations have been well understood since the 19th century, with the examples arising in algebraic geometry typically being arithmetic. While some general results about monodromy groups of higher order equations have been known for over 20 years, many basic questions remain open.. Brav will discuss joint work with Hugh Thomas that gives the first examples of nonarithmetic or thin monodromy groups of higher rank arising in algebraic geometry. More precisely, Brav and Thomas use the ping-pong lemma of Fricke and Klein to show that the monodromy groups of certain one-parameter families of Calabi-Yau manifolds split as free products and then apply a cohomological criterion to deduce that the groups are not arithmetic.. ...

Biophysical models are the analytical tools by which the effects of radiation may be interpreted, allowing assessment and prediction of the effects of low dose radiation. Many developments have taken place in modelling since the 1980s. This volume is a review of the current state of radiation effect modelling, as discussed by scientists at an international workshop held in Padua, Italy in September 1991. Research on existing models and data sets used to test different models are described in detail. The applications of models to radiation biology and radiological protection are reviewed, as are recent developments in the modelling of the carcinogenic process. The interaction of mixed radiation, trace theory and the effects of radiation on DNA are also considered. The book should be of interest to radiation biophysicsts and biologists, medical physicists and others involved in radiological therapy and protection.

Steve Jobs would have loved this band. Capsulas songs are perfect for any Apple product rollout: a quick burst, exhilarating and different - but not too different. Capsula sounds like a lot of other things youve heard by now, but in a way thats hard to pin down. Not unlike Mr. Jobss revolution, Capsula is manufactured from a lot of parts made by other bands, in this case such high-energy acts as the Strokes or the Hives or the Vines, or the Who or Sonic Youth. What we try to do is pick different sounds from different periods of time that we like, Coni Duchess says by phone from somewhere on the road between Nashville and Atlanta. We dont belong to any particular scene.. But the guitar in Capsula is superior, I think, considering that most American indie-rockers rarely solo. Voices Underground, by the way, finishes with a nice quote from Cheap Tricks Shes Tight. I can see why Rolling Stone critic David Fricke jumped on the Capsula bandwagon so early: because they sound a lot like ...
