Y1 - 2009/5/8. N2 - A 40-year-old male paddy field worker was referred for exertional shortness of breath and non-productive cough for 4 years. He had been treated for pulmonary tuberculosis twice. Chest radiograph showed extensive bilateral nodular opacities (sandstorm-like) in the middle and lower lobe. Pulmonary function tests revealed a restrictive ventilatory defect. High resolution CT showed widespread nodular infiltration with crazy paving appearance and interrupted black pleura sign. This was confirmed as pulmonary alveolar microlithiasis (PAM) by trans-bronchial lung biopsy, which showed normal respiratory lining epithelium with dilated alveolar spaces containing many calcific bodies, some of which showed concentric calcification. The possibilities of silicosis (due to exposure to husk) and ...
INTRODUCTION: Major abdominal surgery leads to a postoperative systemic inflammatory response, making it difficult to discriminate patients with systemic inflammatory response syndrome from those with a beginning postoperative infectious complication. At present, physicians have to rely on their clinical experience to differentiate between the two. Pancreatic stone protein (PSP) and pancreatitis-associated protein (PAP), both secretory proteins produced by the pancreas, are dramatically increased during pancreatic disease and have been shown to act as acute-phase proteins. Increased levels of PSP have been detected in polytrauma patients developing sepsis and PSP has shown a high diagnostic accuracy in discriminating the severity of peritonitis and in predicting death in intensive care unit patients. However, the prognostic value of PSP/PAP for infectious complications among patients undergoing major abdominal surgery is unknown ...
BACKGROUND: Pancreatic stone protein/regenerating protein (PSP/reg) serum levels are supposed to be increased in bacterial inflammation. PSP/reg levels also might be useful, therefore, as a predictor of bacterial infection in COPD. METHODS: Two hundred consecutive patients presenting to the ED due to acute exacerbation of COPD were prospectively assessed. Patients were evaluated based on clinical, laboratory, and lung functional parameters at admission (exacerbation) and after short-term follow-up (14-21 days). PSP/reg serum values were measured by a newly developed enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: PSP/reg levels were elevated in subjects with COPD exacerbation (23.8 ng/mL; 95% CI, 17.1-32.7) when compared with those with stable disease (19.1 ng/mL; 95% CI, 14.1-30.4; P 5 .03) and healthy control subjects (14.0 ng/mL; 95% CI , 12.0-19.0; P , .01). Higher PSP/reg values were observed in exacerbations with positive sputum bacteriology compared with those with negative sputum ...
Serum levels of pancreatic stone protein (PSP)/reg1A as an indicator of beta-cell apoptosis suggest an increased apoptosis rate in hepatocyte nuclear factor 1 alpha (HNF1A-MODY) carriers from the third decade of life onward.
Acute pancreatitis was the most common complication associated with ESWL for pancreatic stones and was treated successfully by endoscopic removal of impacted stone fragments. Physicians performing ESWL should also acquire the technique of interventional endoscopy for pancreatic stones. We have reported a case of purulent pancreatic ductitis successfully treated by endoscopic stenting for the first time.9 We have experienced several similar cases that were caused by obstruction of the pancreatic stent and impaction of pancreatic stone fragments at the orifice of the MPD. All these cases showed abdominal pain, high fever, and occasionally disseminated intravascular coagulation, regardless of antibiotics therapy. Such cases are difficult to be diagnosed because abdominal computed tomography does not show findings suggesting acute pancreatitis, e.g., pancreatic enlargement and inflammatory changes in and around the pancreas, except severe dilation of the MPD. We have called this condition acute ...
A 37-year-old patient was admitted to the hospital with severe dyspnoea and cough. Baseline investigations revealed haemoglobin of 16.2 g/dl, haematocrit of 48.8% and a total leucocyte count of 8800/mm3. Comprehensive metabolic profile and serum and urine protein electrophoresis findings were normal. Arterial blood gas analysis showed type 1 respiratory failure. Spirometry showed restrictive ventilatory disturbances (vital capacity 53%, forced expiratory volume in 1 s 91%). A posterior-anterior chest radiograph showed bilateral diffuse, nodular (sandstorm-like) calcifications in both lungs (figure 1A). A high-resolution CT scan demonstrated multiple bilateral micronodulation of calcific densities throughout both lungs (figure 1B). On transbronchial biopsy, the diagnosis of massive parenchymal and alveolar calcification was confirmed. Echocardiography showed valve calcification with moderate mitral-aortic regurgitation and severe pulmonary hypertension. Abdominal ultrasonography revealed ...
Broncholithiasis is defined as calcified or ossified material in the bronchial lumen. The most frequently seen symptoms are a non-productive cough and hemoptysis. Occasionally, broncholytic expectoration can be seen, which is known as lithoptysis. As this is not a common finding, a case diagnosed with lithoptysis is presented here ...

The invention relates to a calculus crushing device with an endoscope (2). The endoscope (2) comprises a flexible insertion section (4) which can be inserted into a body cavity (28). By inserting the insertion section (4) into the body cavity (28) the interior of the body cavity (28) can be observed. The endoscope (2) also has a clamp orifice (10). An ultrasound wave conductor (16) which is used to conduct an ultrasound wave to a calculus (30) is inserted through this clamp orifice (10). The ultrasound wave conductor (16) is flexible, and its distal end can be inserted into the body cavity (28) via the clamp orifice (10) in such a way that it touches the calculus (30). An ultrasound wave generated by an ultrasound wave generating section (20, 22) is transmitted to the ultrasound wave conductor (16) and then to the calculus (30) in order to crush the latter. |IMAGE|
Many results concerning differential equations carry over quite easily to corresponding results for difference equations, while other results seem to be completely different from their continuous counterparts.[2] The study of dynamic equations on time scales reveals such discrepancies, and helps avoid proving results twice-once for differential equations and once again for difference equations. The general idea is to prove a result for a dynamic equation where the domain of the unknown function is a so-called time scale (also known as a time-set), which may be an arbitrary closed subset of the reals. In this way, results apply not only to the set of real numbers or set of integers but to more general time scales such as a Cantor set. The three most popular examples of calculus on time scales are differential calculus, difference calculus, and quantum calculus. Dynamic equations on a time scale have a potential for applications, such as in population dynamics. For example, they can model insect ...

Tonsilloliths are rare concretions found in the tonsillar crypt. They are usually single and unilateral, but occasionally may be multiple or bilateral. This report describes a case of a 47-year-old woman whose radiography revealed one radiopaque image located in the right ramus of the mandible. The patient revealed a history of slight dysphagia, halitosis and swallowing pain with a foreign body sensation. Her medical history revealed a tonsillectomy when she was eight years old and the removal of the uvula because of sleep apnoea six years ago. Computer tomography showed a delimited and calcified oval image measuring 0.6 x 0.6 cm. The tonsillar concretion might have been formed because of a calcification of the lymphoid tissue. On the patients request, surgical excision was not performed and she will be monitored due to the tendency of such lesions to grow ...

TY - CPAPER AB - CCLI: Evaluation of a Mentoring Program for Delivering Engineering Content to Calculus StudentsBackgroundCurrently, a significant effort is being made to increase persistence in engineering. Researchindicates that most students that leave engineering do so in their first year. Students that leave intheir first year most commonly cite calculus as the reason [1]. To address this problem aprogram has been implemented at Anonymous University which uses engineering content toreinforce the importance of and student interest in calculus concepts [2]. The program isconstructed to be easily implemented with minimal cost and no modifications to the existingcalculus courses. To accomplish this, small group discussions facilitated by a diverse group ofpeer mentors is used to deliver the engineering content. One of the issues with implementing such a program is that there is relatively little researchfocusing on the experience of the mentors. Specifically, there is a need to understand what ...
This book was the required text for my two semesters of calculus I had to slough through this past spring and summer. The first semester of calculus would be pretty rough for someone trying to learn it on your own because at times its the concepts that are a little challenging to understand rather than how to do the work. More than likely, some of the material can be confusing without the aid of a teacher or tutor but most chapters you can work independently through without any real problems at all (except the problems themselves, maybe). It will not really take you by the hand and show you all of the little algebra steps in the examples, however. That is YOUR own fault if you dont know whats going on. Do not be expected to be put in a stroller and wheeled around in the land of calculus when you should be walking tall with all the skills you acquired from algebra and trigonometry. As far as the writing goes, it is very well written to get across to most students what exactly you are trying to ...
Well, I cant argue with your beliefs, but I reject them. Application of the calculus to the problems you mention has been quite successful. You assume that atoms behave independently regardless of circumstances. Your assumption that the calculus can deal only with mathematically continuous systems is also faulty. You also have not provided any examples, according to your hypothesis, that application of the calculus has provided faulty results when used to analyze physical phenomena ...

We introduce the Stochastic Quality Calculus in order to model and reason about distributed processes that rely on each other in order to achieve their overall behaviour. The calculus supports broadcast communication in a truly concurrent setting. Generally distributed delays are associated with the outputs and at the same time the inputs impose constraints on the waiting times. Consequently, the expected inputs may not be available when needed and therefore the calculus allows to express the absence of data. The communication delays are expressed by general distributions and the resulting semantics is given in terms of Generalised Semi-Markov Decision Processes. By restricting the distributions to be continuous and by allowing truly concurrent communication we eliminate the non-determinism and arrive at Generalised Semi-Markov Processes (GSMPs); further restriction to exponential distributions gives rise to numerically analysable GSMPs, in particular using techniques from stochastic model checking.
This question is a bit off topic, but I hope it is of sufficient interest [because of lambda calculus] to this group anyway. I will be teaching our Theory of Computation course this coming fall, again. The topics are the standard: regular sets and finite automata, context-free languages and push-down automata, Turing machines and decidability. I personally find Turing machines to be a very unsatisfying model of computation, and would prefer to rely on other models. My favorites would be lambda calculus, RAMs, and imperative language models (e.g., the LOOP language). My belief is that students would find the three of these easier to relate to than Turing machines. However, I have been unable to find a book for our undergraduate (junior-level) course that covers these models. Occasionally, a book will cover the RAM model as a side-light, but I have been unable to find a book, for example, that covers lambda calculus. Does anyone have any suggestions for books (or even detailed lecture notes) that ...

This study investigated different calculus professors conceptions about mathematics and mathematical learning, calculus teaching with or without the use of computing technology, and the experiences in which those conceptions were grounded. Through the qualitative research methodology called grounded theory, six college professors were purposefully selected and studied. The results showed the professors perceptions of the effects of technology use on pedagogy and students learning; their perceptions of barriers and challenges to the adoption and use of technology for teaching and learning calculus; and their experience, knowledge, and motivation for adopting instructional technology that made unique and significant contributions to explaining faculty use of technology for teaching and learning calculus. Some professors were categorically opposed to the use of computing technology in calculus, but others envisioned that computing technology could play a multitude of roles in their calculus ...
2008/1/12, Steven Obua ,obua at in.tum.de,: , I have the following question concerning the simply typed , (non-polymorphic) lambda calculus with constants and axioms for those , constants. , The axioms are all of the form p = t, where p is a linear pattern and , all the free variables in t are bound by p. All the axioms are typed. , , Assume that I have two terms A and B, both typed. , , Assume further that I forget now about all types and use beta , eta , conversions and the axioms as if I would do in untyped lambda calculus. , Doing this, I manage to get from A to B. , , My question is, can I therefore also get from A to B if I DO NOT forget , about the types but respect them? In particular, certain eta , abstractions might not be possible that I could use , in the untyped setting but not in the typed setting. Lines. I find this a waste of ink and trees. If we are letting students into our calculus classes that need a review of this basic material, then we have failed in our advising and those students will fail the course. In my opinion, students are there to learn calculus and should already know what a function is. Chapter zero of the Himonas book is devoted to a recapitulation of the categories of functions and chapter one begins the study of limits and continuity. The Anton book follows largely the same path, chapter one contains a review of functions and chapter two begins the study of limits and continuity. Chapter 2 of the Himonas book describes exponential and logarithmic functions. While I agree that some review is probably necessary, once again, I dont believe that such an extensive review is required. With forty pages devoted to these functions, you are spending about as much time on them as is done in a precalculus course and the limit is never mentioned in the chapter. I really dont ...

Almost universally, when Calculus is taught to modern students, we preface the entire subject by introducing those students to a concept known as a limit. The reason for this, historically, was to ensure that mathematics was taught in a rigorous and well-defined manner. When Leibniz (and, independently, Newton) first developed methods for performing calculus, the concept…

Several paradigms exist for distributed computing, this paper tries to provide a sound foundation for autonomous objects communicating in a very structured way. We define ASPfun, a calculus of functional objects, behaving autonomously, and communicating by a request-reply mechanism: requests are method calls handled asynchronously, futures represent awaited results for requests, and replies return the result of a request to an object that holds the corresponding future. This report first presents the ASPfun calculus and its semantics. Secondly we provide a type system for ASPfun, which ensure the ``progress property: while there is a request that is not reduced to a value, the computation can continue. ASPfun and its properties have been formalized and proved using the Isabelle theorem prover.
It was like when I got to college and had to learn to study. Except I didnt, which is why I graduated with a 2.6 GPA. I learned to study ten years later, in graduate school, when I was paying the tuition - after I had worked a series of nightmare jobs and realized that decent grades in grad school were the only way to ensure that I never EVER had to work in insurance again. Mom, if youre reading this, that still doesnt mean I could have passed Calculus if Id just applied myself more. Calculus is hard ...

The primary goal of this dissertation was to assess the feasibility of transforming an electromagnetic (EM) shock wave lithotripter with an acoustic lens as its focusing device from the original axisymmetric pressure distribution to a non-axisymmetric steerable acoustic field. This work was motivated by the desire to better match the distribution of effective acoustic pressure and pulse energy with the trajectory and anatomical features around renal and ureteral calculi during clinical shock wave lithotripsy (SWL). The acoustic field transformation was accomplished by the design of a fan-shaped acoustic barrier (mask) placed on top of the lithotripter acoustic lens to selectively reduce the source aperture along the direction of the barrier axis, therefore effectively broadening the beam width (,italic,BW,/italic,) of the lithotripter field in this preferred direction. Moreover, the geometry of the original lens (L1) was modified so that the acoustic focus of the new lens (L2) at high output ...
To explore and summarize the reasons why urethral calculi cause a urethral fistula. We retrospectively studied 1 patient in Xiangya hospital and all relevant literature published in English between 1989 and 2015. The patients (including those reported in the literature) were characterized by age, origin, location of calculus, size of calculus, fistulous track, and etiological factors. Most of urethral calculi associated with a urethral fistula were native generated. Urethral calculi can be formed in various locations of the urethra, and the size of the calculus ranged from small (multiple) calculi to giant stones. The fistula external orifice located at the root of the penis was relatively common, and there were various etiological factors, such as urethral strictures, urethral trauma induced by long-term catheterization, lumbar fractures, and congenital anomaly factors. They were managed by the excision of the fistulous tract, retrieval of the urethral stones, and/or debridement and pus drainage
Calculus is used in every branch of the physical sciences, actuarial science, computer science, statistics, engineering, economics, business, medicine, demography, and in other fields wherever a problem can be mathematically modeled and an optimal solution is desired. It allows one to go from (non-constant) rates of change to the total change or vice versa, and many times in studying a problem we know one and are trying to find the other. Physics makes particular use of calculus; all concepts in classical mechanics and electromagnetism are related through calculus. The mass of an object of known density, the moment of inertia of objects, as well as the total energy of an object within a conservative field can be found by the use of calculus. An example of the use of calculus in mechanics is Newtons second law of motion: historically stated it expressly uses the term change of motion which implies the derivative saying The change of momentum of a body is equal to the resultant force acting on ...

The Cartoon Introduction to Calculus is my favorite calculus book ever. Written by Grady Klein and Yoran Bauman, Ph.D., the book is informative, interesting, and insanely funny. That is not an easy task considering the subject matter. I got a C in calculus as a university freshman, and although I understand the topic better today, I really wish this book had existed at the time.. All the important topics are covered. The reader begins by being introduced to the history of calculus with both Leibniz and Newton and the questions they were exploring that lead each to invent or discover (pick your own side, Im not taking one) the mathematics involved. We learn about The Fundamental Theorem of Calculus, limits, derivatives, how this is useful in applications like economics, all the way to integrals and how they are used in physics. I sincerely wish the practical applications had been made this clear to me when I first encountered the subject!. There are other books out there that do a pretty ...

Introduction of the dental endoscope or perioscope has enabled us to see calculus via a fiber optic lens with a powerful light at the end of a narrow probe. The image of the subgingival area is visualized on a computer screen with a magnification of 50X. We use this as we scale and it has demonstrated several important observations. The perioscope has revealed that even while visualizing the calculus, it is sometimes difficult to remove even with ultrasonics. We often have to revert to scaling the calculus thats embedded in the root surface in order to remove it. In addition, areas that we have maintained over the years that suddenly broke down or have been nonresponsive during maintenance have almost always had subgingival calculus visualized with the perioscope. When the calculus is removed, the pocket decreases in depth and the signs of pathology cease. The results are dramatic when you get the last piece and the most important piece of calculus removed. This is especially true on ...
Calculus is quite a bit away. I suggest you learn Algebra 3/Precalculus through Art of Problem Solving. I have used it and its a great resource for making you actually understand the material rather then memorizing it. It has many hard problems and is ideal for learning problem solving skills and participating in math contests such as AMC. A set of books I used were from http://www.ncert.nic.in/ncerts/textbook/textbook.htm Those books are available for free online and are the most-used books in the Indian curricula. They are quite nice, from what I have used. You would probably need only 11-12 grades of those books (they cover calculus as well). Another book you can try is Basic Mathematics by Serge Lang ...
This simple model is a great example to show how calculus can be relevant to biology.. My first point might be specific to recent French students: first-year students are often not even proficient enough with basic algebraic manipulations to be able to do anything relevant with such a model. For example, even asking to compute how $d$ changes when $T$ is multiplied by a constant needs to now how to deal with exponents. In fact, we even had serious issues with the mere use of percentages.. One of the main point of our new calculus course is to be able to estimate uncertainties: in particular, given that $T=T_0\pm \delta T$, $\alpha=\alpha_0\pm\delta\alpha$ and $\beta=\beta_0\pm\delta\beta$, we ask them to estimate $d$ up to order one (i.e. using first-order Taylor series). This already involves derivatives of multivariable functions, and is an important computation when you want to draw conclusions from experiments.. Another important point of the course is the use of logarithms and exponentials, ...
Although classical physics and calculus have traditionally been used to analyze big crowds in emergency situations, researchers in China found that a branch of mathematics called fractional calculus could offer a more realistic picture of crowd dynamics. An intuitive way of modeling crowds is to think of each person as an individual particle, an approach that enables researchers to use the language of Newtonian physics and differential and integral calculus to describe how people behave in clusters. However, people have unique thoughts and feelings that influence how they behave in large groups, and fractional calculus addresses this by accounting for long-range interactions among particles. In fractional calculus, each object in a fractional order model is assigned a memory that persists much longer than the short-lived interactions among particles. Fractional calculus therefore provides a much more realistic picture of crowd behavior. The researchers modeled people as unique, cost-minimizing ...
Action Labelled transition systems (LTS) have proved to be a fundamental model for describing and proving properties of concurrent systems. In this paper, Multiple Labelled Transition Systems (MLTS) are introduced as generalizations of LTS that permit dealing also with systems features that are becoming more and more important when considering languages and models for network aware programming. MLTS permit describing not only the actions systems can perform but also systems resources usage and their handling (creation, revelation ...) of names. To show adeguacy of our proposal we show how MLTS can be used to describe the operational semantics of one of the most studied calculus for mobility: the asynchronous [pi]-calculus.. ...

What causes periodontal gum disease ? Our mouths are full of bacteria. These bacteria, along with mucus and other particles, constantly form a sticky, colorless plaque on teeth. Brushing and flossing help get rid of plaque. Plaque that is not removed can harden and form calculus that brushing does not clean. Only a professional cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist can remove the calculus as it is very hard like pieces of rocks.. The longer plaque and calculus are on teeth, the more harmful they become. The bacteria causes inflammation of the gums leading to gingivitis. In gingivitis, the gums become red, swollen and can bleed easily. Gingivitis is a mild form of gum disease that can usually be reversed with daily brushing and flossing, and regular cleaning by a dentist or dental hygienist. This form of gum disease does not include any loss of jaw bone and tissue that hold teeth in place. Continue reading →. ...
For the diagnosis of vaginal calculi, ultrasound is considered more accurate than plain radiography, although there are limitations [5]. In cases of partially filled bladder they still can project within it and lead to erroneous diagnosis of bladder calculi, the same is true for dumbbell calculi with vesical component. Dense posterior shadowing of the calculus can make it difficult to evaluate the vaginal component like in the case presented here. CT scan represents the examination of choice helping to depict not only the exact location and extent of the stone, but also to detect the foreign body nidus and other complications like infection [6]. In our case urethral calculi were only seen on CT scan. Moreover it can provide a correct roadmap for surgical planning ...
White chunk on tonsil - I get these white chunks in my tonsil and around my tonsil there are things like pimples that have that white stuff too, how do I get rid of it? Tonsilloliths. Likely tonsilloliths (tonsil stones). No treatment indicated unless symptomatic. If concerned, see ENT doc.
Abscess -A localized collection of pus in the skin or other body tissue caused by infection. Bicuspid -Premolar; the two-cupped tooth between the first molar and the cuspid. Calcification -A process in which tissue becomes hardened due to calcium deposits. Calculus -Plural, calculi. Any type of hard concretion (stone) in the body, but usually found in the gallbladder, pancreas, and kidneys. They are formed by the accumulation of excess mineral salts and other organic material such as blood or mucus. Calculi (pl.) can cause problems by lodging in and obstructing the proper flow of fluids, such as bile to the intestines or urine to the bladder. In dentistry, calculus refers to a hardened yellow or brown mineral deposit from unremoved plaque, also called tartar. Canines -The two sharp teeth located next to the front incisor teeth in mammals that are used to grip and tear. Also called cuspids. Crown -The natural part of the tooth covered by enamel. A restorative crown is a protective shell that fits ...

Summary: The \(\pi\)-calculus, in particular its stochastic version the stochastic \(\pi\)-calculus, is a common modeling formalism to concisely describe the chemical reactions occurring in biochemical systems. However, it remains largely unexplored how to transform a biochemical model expressed in the stochastic \(\pi\)-calculus back into a set of meaningful reactions. To this end, we present a two step approach of first translating model states to reaction sets and then visualizing sequences of reaction sets, which are obtained from state trajectories, in terms of reaction networks. Our translation from model states to reaction sets is formally defined and shown to be correct, in the sense that it reflects the states and transitions as they are derived from the continuous time Markov chain-semantics of the stochastic \(\pi\)-calculus. Our visualization concept combines high level measures of network complexity with interactive, table-based network visualizations. It directly reflects the ...

Elementary Calculus, through a series of portraits, landscapes and still life photographs, observes the publicly private moments of these peregrine foreigners as they attempt to connect back to their homes. In his documentation of migrants and refugees in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem, Carrier explores the distance between reality and desire - the want for what was and the hope for what will be - and traces the manner in which we navigate the points between the unknowns. His photographs resonate with the sense that in a foreign country geographical distance loses its physical measure and home feels like a hazy memory, a half-remembered dream ...

This thesis investigates various formal systems for reasoning about partial functions or partial elements, with particular emphasis on lambda calculi for partial functions. Beesons (intuitionistic) logic of partial terms (LPT) is taken as the basic formal system and some of its metamathematical properties are established (for later application). Three different flavours of Scotts logic of partial elements (LPE) are considered and it is shown that they are conservative extensions of LPT. This result, we argue, corroborates the choice of LPT as the basic formal system. Variants of LPT are introduced for reasoning about partial terms with a restriction operator ↾, monotonic partial functions (monLPT), lambda-terms λ_p-calculus) and λY-terms λ_pμY-calculus). The expressive powers of some (in)equational fragments are compared in LPT and its variants. Two equational formal systems are related to some of the logics above: Obtulowiczs p-equational logic is related to LPT+↾ and Plotkins ...

The dog lay down comfortably and calmly on a thick pillow in the technicians lap. Her teeth were scraped with a Universal scaler, any thick areas of calculus were removed with a calculus rongeur. All 42 teeth were scaled on all exposed surfaces and also under the gum line. The gingiva are then probed and recorded for any detachment. Then the teeth are polished with a hand held portable electric high speed polisher. Criteria for thoroughness are based on 1) a visual inspection that all calculus is removed on the enamel or tooth root, 2) a black light inspection which will glow approximately 80% of calculus pink, and 3) a tactile inspection feeling for smooth enamel surfaces or smoothing out root surfaces ...
