The lymphatic system is the area least investigated in the field of anatomical science. The major reason for this is the technical difficulty in identifying the lymphatics in the surrounding tissue in post-mortem specimens. As a result, the medical illustration masterpieces crafted by pioneer anatomists on the basis of cadaver dissections remain a vital component of current anatomical textbooks. Several innovative techniques were developed in the past to allow anatomists to distinguish the transparent lymphatic structures from their surroundings and enable thorough investigation of the lymphatic system in a cadaver model. This paper focuses on these techniques, including the current technique developed by the authors themselves ...

The study of gross Anatomy through the use of cadaveric dissections in medical schools is an essential part of the comprehensive learning of human Anatomy, and unsurprisingly, 90% of the surveyed medical schools in Africa used cadaveric dissections. Donated cadavers now make up 80% of the total cadavers in North American medical schools and all the cadavers used for dissection in the United Kingdom are donated. Because the sources of cadavers used in Africa are not clearly known, a questionnaire to gather information on cadavers used at medical schools was designed from the relevant literature and was sent by electronic mail to 123 Anatomy lecturers in 23 African countries (48 medical schools). Fourteen lecturers from 14 medical schools in ten countries responded to the questionnaires. The results indicate that, in most countries, the cadavers are unclaimed bodies from the hospitals and prisons, and the bodies of dead bandits. TY - JOUR. T1 - Three-dimensional conformation of the injected bolus in vocal fold injections in a cadaver model. AU - Mau, Ted. AU - Brewer, Jacquelyn M.. AU - Gatzert, Samuel T.. AU - Courey, Mark S.. PY - 2011/4. Y1 - 2011/4. N2 - Objective. To determine the 3-dimensional (3D) conformation of the injected bolus in the larynx in vocal fold injections, to understand how the bolus interacts spatially with elements of the laryngeal framework, and to relate the above to clinical observations in performing vocal fold injections. Study Design. Excised cadaveric larynx study. Setting. Laboratory. Subjects and Methods. Vocal folds of 12 human excised cadaveric larynges were injected with calcium hydroxylapatite. High-resolution computed tomography scans were obtained of the injected larynges. Densities corresponding to the injected bolus and the laryngeal framework were extracted and processed with MATLAB routines to generate selective 3D reconstructions of the injected bolus within the laryngeal ...
In the 1950s, atomic bomb testing caused large quantities of synthetic 14C to be released into the atmosphere and enter the bodies of living organisms. Methods for calibrating radiocarbon dates from post-bomb materials have been developed over the past two decades and are becoming more applicable in forensics; however, the application of radiocarbon dating concerning medical cadavers has not been fully explored. To determine if human cadavers are viable research subjects, three samples were collected from two human cadavers from the Sanford School of Medicine with known birth and death dates. The intention was to have a lower incisor and a portion of the humerus epiphyses and diaphysis from each cadaver sent to the Center for Applied Isotope Studies (CAIS) at the University of Georgia for radiocarbon dating; however, only the incisor of a cadaver that was born after 1950 was dated. It was expected that the various embalming solutions used on cadavers have no effect on the radiocarbon dates and that
Even the best anatomy resources (books, software) fall short of presenting a true sense of the reality of the human form and how structures integrate with the whole. This workshop takes you into the fascinating and often disorienting world of real anatomy and offers the opportunity to study several pre-dissected human cadavers. Each cadaver is unique and structures often dont match anatomical resource materials. Cadaver study allows the observer to appreciate the multitude of ways the basic pattern of the body can be expressed. These cadaver dissections offer a variety of approaches to show different aspects of individual structures and how these structures relate to their surroundings Many anatomy models and texts will also be on hand. Participants are encouraged to be curious and explore through observation, palpation, drawing and ...
Eighty-four medical students at the University of Arizona were administered measures of self-esteem, medical attitudes, social desirability, purpose in life, satisfaction with life, state and trait anxiety one week before their first cadaver dissecting experience. On the day of the experience, half of the subjects completed these measures again in addition to a death anxiety scale just prior to their first cadaver exposure. The other half completed these measures immediately after their first cadaver exposure. Results found main effects of self-esteem with high self-esteem subjects endorsing higher purpose in life and medical attitudes and lower state anxiety and death anxiety. Time by condition interactions were found for state anxiety and purpose in life, with both significantly higher in subjects assessed following exposure to the cadaver. Finally, a main effect for condition was also seen with regard to fear of death, with those exposed to the cadaver scoring significantly higher. ...
Femoral Triangle Versus Adductor Canal. The Most Reliable Location to Block Nerve to Vastus Medialis.. A Cadaveric Study.. Johnston DF§, Black N*, Cowden R‡, Turbitt L§, Taylor S†. BACKGROUND. Compared to femoral nerve block, an adductor canal (AC) block has the desirable effect of preserving quadriceps function while maintaining a similar analgesic profile after total knee arthroplasty (TKA).1 The nerve to vastus medialis (NVM) supplies sensation to important structures relevant for TKA (e.g. the medial knee capsule, medial retinaculum, ligamentous intraarticular structures and the undersurface of the patella).2 There is variation in the literature findings whether the NVM is reliably located within the AC.3,4 This is further complicated by mid-thigh injections being termed AC blocks when they are in fact injections at the level of the femoral triangle (FT).5. OBJECTIVE. The objective of this cadaveric study is to determine the effect of location of ultrasound guided injections on ...

Treasure standard. Cadavers are the undead skeletal remains of people who have been buried alive or given an improper burial (an unmarked grave or mass grave for example). They can be found haunting graveyards and cemeteries.. Cadavers are infused with a hatred that rivals many other undead creatures. This hatred includes its own existence as well as the existence of all living creatures. Thus, the cadaver attacks all creatures it encounters. They have a distinct hatred for light, but it does not damage them. All encounters with cadavers are at night or places cloaked in darkness. Encounters are most often with a solitary creature. Multiple cadavers do not work in concert with each other; being mindless they simply charge into combat, killing all creatures they can. Cadavers are sometimes found in the employ of greater undead (such as wights or ghasts).. A cadaver attacks by raking with its filthy claws or biting with its sharp, disease-infested teeth. They often lie in shallow graves waiting ...
Our human cadaveric airway course offers delegates a unique opportunity to repetitively perform and compare different techniques of airway management on a variety of cadaveric specimens. The focus of the course will be on visualising the larynx, and appreciating the differing appearance of human airway anatomy in the cadaveric specimens. There will be plenty of hands-on practice of the skills of conventional laryngoscopy, videolaryngoscopy using a variety of different devices, LMA and i-gel insertion, oral and nasal fibreoptic intubation and cricothyroidotomy. One of the pair of delegates will have the opportunity of performing the surgical cricothyroidotomy (Cutting the Neck Option).. Cadavers offer a unique opportunity for airway practitioners to interact with and visualise human airway structures without the ethical issues or risks associated with practising on live patients. Airway management and intubation on live patients cannot be done repetitively just to compare, test, or practice ...

By Erin L. Cox. Last August, I was invited to attend a screening of a short animated film called Cadaver. Set in a medical school anatomy lab, it is a love story about a cadaver who wakes up and begs the medical student to help him say a last goodbye to his wife. Tomorrow, for Valentines Day, Cadaver will be released as a graphic novel by Academy Chicago.. Crossmedia has been a buzz word throughout the last few years as book publishers attempt to strengthen the bond between the book, film, and gaming worlds. Generally the story begins as a book and is then adapted for film, but not in this case. Could Cadaver be among the first film to book conversions?. Jonah Ansell is the writer and director behind Cadaver. The story began with a frantic email from his sister who was in medical school. They were making the med students do some sort of creative assignment, like, tell us what you think this cadavers life mustve been like, write a haiku, or draw a picture, I think it was intended to ...
Background: The accessory anterolateral talar facet may be associated with talocalcaneal impingement in the painful flatfoot. We performed an anatomic study to identify this accessory facet and its associated osteologic features. Methods: Within the Hamann-Todd Human Osteological Collection, seventy-nine paired tall and calcanel were identified among forty-three skeletons from individuals who had had an average age of 13.4 years at the time of death. Each specimen was surveyed for an accessory anterolateral talarfacet, a calcaneal neck anterior extension facet, a dorsal talar beak, and the talocalcaneal facet pattern. Measurements included the angle of Gissane, posterior facet inclination, calcaneal neck length, posteriorfacet length, overall calcaneal and talar lengths, and accessory facet dimensions. Lateral radiographs of specimens with accessory facets were made in neutral and everted subtalar alignment. Results: An accessory anterolateral talar facet was identified in twenty-seven (34%) of ...

classes, refers to the cadavers as amazing teaching tools.. Barattini said she became interested in human anatomy when she visited an exhibit of plasticized models. I wasnt completely shocked, she said. At first I was uncomfortable, but then I thought wow; this is inside my body.. For OT, its important to know placement of muscles, she said, noting that students need to know how stroke or spinal cord injuries affect the body. You can see exactly what each muscle does in the body.. Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center supplies the cadavers to the College through a special agreement. Its a generous gift that the person donated to science, Goldina said of cadaver donors last wishes.. Before sending them to the College, Hershey Medical Center uses an embalming solution to preserve the cadavers and keep them from decomposing. The College keeps the cadavers viable for study and dissection for up to three years, storing them in a temperature-controlled facility. Contrary ...
Ten lower extremity cadaveric specimens were obtained and were screened for gross anatomic defects and pre-existing ankle laxity. The ATFL and CFL were sectioned from the fibula by an open technique. Standard anterolateral and anteromedial arthroscopy portals were made. An additional portal was created 2 cm distal to the anterolateral portal. The articular surface of the fibula was identified, and the ATFL and CFL were freed from the superficial and deeper tissues. Suture anchors were placed in the fibula at the ATFL and CFL origins and were used to repair the origin of the lateral collateral structures. The distance from the suture knot to several local anatomic structures was measured. Measurements were taken by 2 separate observers, and the results were averaged.. ...
Marek Konarik, Vladimir Musil, Vaclav Baca, David Kachlik, Although the variability of the upper limb arteries is a clinically important problem, the prevalence is varying across the existing studies and classification is rather complicated, not well established and sometimes even unclear for simple and direct understanding and usage. Multiple case reports appearing in the last years apply incorrect, inappropriate, and sometimes misleading terminology. We performed an anatomical cadaveric study of the variability of the arteries of the upper limb, namely, the axilla, arm, and forearm, in 423 upper limbs embalmed with classical formaldehyde method (Central European population). We proposed to apply the Equality system based on the common trunks for denomination of the axillary artery branches principal variations: Truncus subscapulocircumflexus (22.9%), truncus profundocircumflexus (13.75%), and truncus bicircumflexus (13.95%). Further, we proposed the terminology system developed by ...

The incidence and aetiology of hypertension following cadaveric-donor renal transplantation have been investigated in twenty-four patients. Initially, the diastolic blood pressure was persistently above 100 mmHg in 52% of the patients. By 1 month after renal transplantation the incidence had fallen to 17% but it then increased rapidly, so that by 5 months 83% had hypertension.. Changes in blood pressure correlated poorly with changes in the dose of prednisone, extracellular fluid volume, exchangeable sodium, creatinine clearance and haemoglobin.. The recipients original diseased kidneys were removed after transplantation in seven patients. The blood pressure fell to normal levels in three, remained unchanged in two and became easier to control with antihypertensive drugs in the other two patients. Measurements of plasma renin concentration were of no value in predicting the response to recipient nephrectomy.. ...

Kidney transplantation is safe, cost-effective, and beneficial for patients with end-stage renal disease. The number of patients who can receive transplants is severely limited by the availability of donor organs. Because most patients do not have a suitable living, related donor, transplant programs now rely on the use of cadaveric kidneys. Proper selection and management of cadaveric donors, coupled with the legal recognition of brain death, has now given this source of organs primary importance in the treatment of end-stage renal disease. To balance the number of transplants done and the number of patients maintained on dialysis, increased recognition and participation by both physicians and the public are needed to maximize cadaveric organ procurement. ...

Material and methods Seventeen computer-aided plans were used for virtual variation simulation of surgeries conducted on 17 human cadavers and 145 implants placed in the cadavers. For each surgery, 10,000 virtual surgeries were performed, resulting in 1,450,000 implant placements. The results from the virtual variation simulations were statistically compared with the results from the actual surgeries. The Mann-Whitney U test was used to compare the implant distributions (α=.05). Results In the maxillae, the difference between the simulated average mean of the mean and the compared surgical average of the median was 0.22 mm (apex) and −0.35 mm (hex), and for the mandible, the corresponding values were −0.19 mm (apex) and −0.69 mm (hex). The simulated average mean of the range compared to the mean range of the maximum deviation results from the surgeries of the maxillae was 2.96 mm (apex) and 0.44 mm (hex), and 2.3 mm (apex) and 0.26 mm (hex) for the mandible. Last August, I had the pleasure of reviewing Leeds based old school death metal band Cadaver Soiree who released their debut album To Betray the Creator to high acclaim. Cadaver Soiree are not in this game to create something new but to remember the old gods of death metal and why death metal is still relevant after thirty years.. It was great to hear that they are already working tirelessly on their next album and have delved deeper into the brutality akin to the Florida death metal scene. I for one will be looking forward to hearing it. Until then, I caught up with vocalist and all-round good guy Marc who chatted about all things to do with the band.. I wish Cadaver Soiree all the best and will hope to catch them on the road one day.. Please subscribe to my channel Ricky of Moshville Times at Youtube or on Facebook.
