Bulgaria was founded as a state in 681 AD and in its development had gone through stages associated with large ups and downs. In modern epoch the third Bulgarian state was restored on July 1st 1878. (Berlin Peace Treaty), and on September 22nd 1908 Principality of Bulgaria was declared an independent state. After the World War II Bulgaria fell under the influence of the Soviet Union and in 1946 Bulgaria became a Peoples Republic with one-party government (the Bulgarian Communist Party), having taken the Soviet model of planned economy with nationalization of the enterprises and collectivization of agriculture. Due to ongoing changes in the late Twentieth Century in the entire Eastern Europe and public pressure inside the country, Bulgaria began a political system transition from Communism and planned economy to Democracy and free market economy (in 1989). On April 2nd 2004 Bulgaria became a NATO member and on January 1st 2007 joined the European Union ...
Ten business associations representing foreign investors in Bulgaria have issued an open letter to Bulgarias state leaders on January 25 2016, calling for a systemic approach to solving the issues in the judiciary, one that is based on rule of law and the reform strategy approved by Parliament last year.. The letter, addressed to Prime Minister Boiko Borissov and his four deputy prime ministers, Justice Minister Ekaterina Zaharieva, President Rossen Plevneliev and Parliament Speaker Tsetska Tsacheva, was signed by the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Bulgaria, as well as the chambers of commerce representing German, French, British, Belgian and Italian businesses in Bulgaria, among others.. The foreign investor groups expressed their concern at recent developments regarding the implementation of the long-awaited judiciary reform and the growing perception, both in Bulgaria and among international investor circles, that Bulgaria has a deficit of the rule of law.. The perception that ...
While Bulgaria has not formally joined the exchange rate mechanism, the ±15% floating band permitted within ERM II is less restrictive than Bulgarias current strict peg of 1.95583 BGN to 1 EUR. The lev has been pegged to the euro since its launch, and prior to that was pegged on par to the German Mark. While the currency board which pegs Bulgaria to the euro has been seen as beneficial to the country fulfilling criteria so quickly,[22] the ECB has pressured Bulgaria to drop it as it did not know how to let a country using a currency board join the euro. The Prime Minister has stated the desire to keep the currency board until the euro was adopted. However, factors such as a high inflation, an unrealistic exchange rate with the euro and the countrys low productivity are negatively affected by the system.[23]. Simeon Dyankov, Bulgarias then-finance minister, said in September 2009 that Bulgaria planned to enter ERM II in November 2009,[24][1][2][3] but this was delayed. It was then delayed ...

The outbreaks of African Swine Fever in Bulgaria have resulted in more than 100 000 pigs being culled in the northern part of the country, Bulgarian National Television (BNT) said on the evening of August 1.. Estimates from before the outbreak of African Swine Fever put the number of registered pigs in Bulgaria at a maximum 600 000.. The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency has begun checks in small towns in northern Bulgaria to see if farmers have voluntarily got rid of their pigs, the report said.. The deadline for doing so in districts in that part of Bulgaria expired on July 31. Failure to comply means a fine of 100 to 1000 leva (about 50 to 500 euro).. Efforts by veterinary authorities in Rousse, the largest city on Bulgarias Danube border, are currently aimed at controlling the outbreak of African Swine Fever in the town of Byala, where a sick pig was found in a farmyard. In the area, 140 animals will be euthanised at six unregistered small farms.. However, employees of the Regional Food Safety ...
SOFIA, Bulgaria - In an effort to boost vaccination rates among a skeptical public, Bulgaria has opened up COVID-19 inoculations to all who want them.. On Friday, Bulgarian Prime Minister Boiko Borissov told the nation he was creating green corridors where any Bulgarian resident could line up for the vaccine.. Bulgaria first began administering the shots on Dec. 27. But before the mass vaccination campaign began Saturday, Bulgaria had one of the lowest vaccination rates in Europe, with fewer than 1% of Bulgarians having taken the first dose and fewer than half of those fully vaccinated as of Feb. 14, according to the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control.. In a poll of 1,000 Bulgarians conducted by Alpha Research and cited by The Sofia Globe, some 52 percent said they did not intend to be immediately vaccinated.. Since the mass vaccination campaign began, more than 30,000 people have received a first shot, according to local media reports.. Thousands stood in line for hours over ...
The Bulgars, a Central Asian Turkic tribe, merged with the local Slavic inhabitants in the late 7th century to form the first Bulgarian state. In succeeding centuries, Bulgaria struggled with the Byzantine Empire to assert its place in the Balkans, but by the end of the 14th century the country was overrun by the Ottoman Turks. Northern Bulgaria attained autonomy in 1878 and all of Bulgaria became independent from the Ottoman Empire in 1908. Having fought on the losing side in both World Wars, Bulgaria fell within the Soviet sphere of influence and became a Peoples Republic in 1946. Communist domination ended in 1990, when Bulgaria held its first multiparty election since World War II and began the contentious process of moving toward political democracy and a market economy while combating inflation, unemployment, corruption, and crime. The country joined NATO in 2004 and the EU in 2007 ...

Six years after joining the European Union, Bulgaria and Romania have the lowest absorption rate of European structural and cohesion funds from all EU-27 countries. Moreover, as of February 2013, Bulgaria has absorbed three times more structural funds than Romania. This paper seeks to unpack the concept of absorption capacity by examining the potential factors associated with Bulgarias and Romanias low absorption rates. This is an under-researched area, particularly for Central and Eastern European states, with few definitions advanced by the literature (Brusis 2002; Sumpikova 2003; Horvat & Maier 2005; Jaenike 2011). This paper addresses the following research questions: What are the factors that determine these countries low absorption capacity? Given Bulgarias and Romanias similar integration path and political, social and economic configurations - what may explain the variation between the two cases? Discussions on the impact that cohesion policies have had on new member states ...

This Selected Issues paper examines inflation dynamics in Bulgaria from January 2012 to February 2015 and highlights some stylized facts about inflation in the country. January 2012 to February 2015 is the most relevant period for identifying factors contributing to recent deflation in Bulgaria, as well as their relative importance. Regression analysis suggests that during this period the inward spillover of low inflationary pressure from the European Union to Bulgaria has been the most significant factor, which was further exacerbated by consecutive electricity price cuts in 2013 and fast-falling global commodity prices, especially since late 2014.

The Council notes that Bulgaria has continued the reform of the judicial system by improving the rules for appointments, training and appraisals within the judiciary. For the first time within the last four years The Council take such a standpoint.. Commissions assessment also points to important challenges. GIPSON DISSERTATION AWARD. During 2011-2013 the American Research Center in Sofia held an annual competition for its Gipson Dissertation Award, whereby an outstanding Bulgarian doctoral dissertation was translated into English and published for an international audience. Generously financed by the Tianaderrah Foundation (Nellie and Robert Gipson), the theme of each competition was devoted to a different topic. Chronologically, the study fell anywhere between Antiquity and World War II.. The competition was open to Bulgarian scholars who defended their doctoral dissertation at any of the accredited universities or institutes in Bulgaria between 2004 and 2013 and currently resided in Bulgaria. The applications were judged by an international jury of experts. The author of the winning dissertation submitted a revised version, which took into account the recommendations of the jury.. Downloadable! Despite the importance and potential role of entrepreneurship for economies in Central and Eastern Europe, little attention has been devoted to identifying which factors contribute to the entrepreneurship in the region. The purpose of the present study is twofold. First, there is a comparison of entrepreneurial orientation in Bulgarian family and non-family firms. Second, there is an examination of which individual, organizational and environmental factors underlie differences in entrepreneurial orientation between family and non-family firms. The findings reveal that several organizational and environmental factors are conductive for pursuing entrepreneurship within family and non-family firms. Lower environmental dynamism, smaller firm size and the lack of foreign ownership account partially for lower entrepreneurial orientation in family firms. The paper provides a discussion of implications for practitioners and suggestions for future research.

On the 24th of July 2007, 5 Bulgarian nurses and 1 Palestinian doctor were released from Libya after having been jailed for more than 8 years [1]. They were accused by the Libyan government of intentionally infecting over 400 children by injecting them with HIV at the state-run Al-Fateh Childrens Hospital in Benghazi, Libya in 1998. The medics claimed their innocence in this matter but some confessed under the extreme pressure by being repeatedly tortured [2]. Through the years, their case was seen by several courts and the medics were subjected to numerous trials in which they were sentenced to death by fire squadron twice; first by the Benghazi Appeals court and then by the Libyan Supreme court. However, later on, the sentence was reduced to life imprisonment and they were released to Bulgaria by the High Judicial Council. This was after the families of the victims accepted compensation worth $1 million per child [3]. The Bulgarian President went much further by completely revoking their sentences

A number of high profile international supporters of the Prespa Treaty are gathering for the Prespa Forum Dialogue that is held in Oteshevo and Ohrid over the next two days. In a message to Bulgaria, Palmer expressed hope that Americas European allies share the vision of Euro-Atlantic integration of the Western Balkans.. The Church of God in Bulgaria was established in the 1920s with an identical name, but independently from the Church of God (Cleveland, TN). The first connection between the two denominations was established in 1985. During this 65-year period the Church of God in Bulgaria was persecuted by Orthodox and nationalistic organizations until it was outlawed by the Communism Regime in the 1940s. During the years of underground worship, the Church of God has preserved the Lords Supper in the grade of authenticity in which it was initially received from the first Pentecostal missionaries.. An essential part of the service is the preparation. Due to the lack of scheduled services in the underground church, the believers depend on the leadership of the Holy Spirit for the exact date of the communion service.
