Mature spermatozoa have highly condensed DNA that is essentially silent both transcriptionally and translationally. Therefore, post translational modifications are very important for regulating sperm motility, morphology and for male fertility in general. Protein sumoylation was recently demonstrated in human and rodent spermatozoa, with potential consequences for sperm motility and DNA integrity. We examined the expression and localization of small ubiquitin-related modifier-1 (SUMO-1) in the sperm of water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) using immunofluorescence analysis. We confirmed the expression of SUMO-1 in the acrosome. We further found that SUMO-1 was lost if the acrosome reaction was induced by calcium ionophore A23187. Proteins modified or conjugated by SUMO-1 in water buffalo sperm were pulled down and analyzed by mass spectrometry. Sixty proteins were identified, including proteins important for sperm morphology and motility, such as relaxin receptors and cytoskeletal proteins, including tubulin
IQBAL, M. et al. Assessment of Nili-Ravi buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) semen by MTT reduction assay. S. Afr. j. anim. sci. [online]. 2009, vol.39, n.5, pp.294-300. ISSN 2221-4062.. MTT (3-(4,5-dimethyl thiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay is commonly used to validate the viability of metabolically active cells. The study was conducted to examine and validate the MTT test to assess the sperm viability of Nili-Ravi buffalo bulls and compare the efficiency of the test with the supra-vital staining technique (eosin-nigrosine) and hypo-osmotic swelling test. Fresh semen samples from breeding Nili-Ravi buffalo bulls (n = 20) were collected using an artificial vagina. After assessing the quality of semen for normal parameters, the MTT assay was carried out in phosphate buffer saline. Results revealed a high significant correlation (r = 0.995) between the viability of sperm and the rate of reduction of MTT. The other proportions of some semen samples showed a weak relationship between the ...
Among domestic animals, the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), particularly the river buffalo, holds great promise and potential for animal production. According to estimates by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations the global water buffalo population has increased 98% in the last decades, from 88 million in 1961 to 174 million in 2005. Buffalo is the most important farm animal species in Asia, especially India, where it is extensively used for milk, meat, fuel and fertilizer production (from manure), as well as for draught power [1]. Currently, river buffalo can be found in many countries worldwide. The growth of its population outside of the Asian continent is mainly related to the increasing interest in milk production used to produce cream, butter, yogurt and many cheeses. Brazil, for instance, is the largest buffalo breeding center outside the Asian continent holding the largest buffalo herd in the Americas.. River buffalo, along with domestic cattle, belongs to the ...

A candidate gene analysis of the microphthalmia-associated transcription factor (MITF) gene was used in an attempt to identify the genetic basis for a white-spotted coat color phenotype in the Asian swamp buffalo (Bubalus bubalis carabanensis). Ninety-three buffaloes32 solid, 38 spotted and 23 white individualswere Sanger-sequenced for all MITF exons as well as highly conserved intronic and flanking regions. MITFcDNA representing skin and iris tissue from six spotted, nine solid and one white buffaloes was also Sanger-sequenced to confirm detected mutations. Two independent loss-of-function mutations, a premature stop codon (c.328C,T, p.Arg110*) and a donor splice-site mutation (c.840+2T,A, p.Glu281_Leu282Ins8), both of which cause white-spotted coat color in swamp buffaloes, were identified. The nonsense mutation leads to a premature stop codon in exon 3, and likely removal of the resulting mRNA via nonsense-mediated decay pathway, whereas the donor splice-site mutation leads to aberrant ...

Haemorrhagic septicaemia (HS) is an acute, fatal, septicaemic disease of cattle and buffaloes caused by one of two specific serotypes of Pasteurella multocida B:2 and E:2 in Asian and African, respectively. It is well known that HS affect mainly the respiratory and digestive tracts. However, involvement of the nervous system in pathogenesis of HS has been reported in previous studies without details. In this study, nine buffalo calves of 8 months old were distributed into three groups. Animals of Group 1 and 2 were inoculated orally and subcutaneously with 10 ml of 1 × 1012 cfu/ml of P. multocida B:2, respectively, while animals of Group 3 were inoculated orally with 10 ml of phosphate buffer saline as a control. All calves in Group 1 and Group 3 were euthanised after 504 h (21 day) post-infection, while calves in Group 2 had to euthanise after 12 h post-infection as they develop sever clinical signs of HS. Significant differences were found in Group 2 in the mean scores of clinical signs, ...
As part of a large-scale disease screening program, blood samples were collected from 534 African buffalo (Syncerus caffer) in South Africas Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Park in October 2005 and May 2006 to establish age- and sex-specific reference intervals for erythrogram and lenkogram values. Sixty-seven of the animals were positive for bovine tuberculosis (TB), allowing for comparisons between TB-positive and TB-negative groups. Positive animals had basopenia and slight lymphopenia compared to TB-negative animals. Blood values were compared to those reported for captive African buffalo, American bison (Bos bison), and cattle (Bos taurus). The free-ranging buffalo sampled in this study had higher white blond cell counts than captive buffalo, and this difference was driven by lymphocytes. Free-ranging buffalo also had higher red blood cell counts, mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), white blood cell counts, neutrophils and lymphocytes, and lower mean corpuscular volume (MCV) than cattle. ...
ABSTRACT. Three hundred rectal faecal samples and 213 raw milk samples obtained from the tanks and containers were examined using standard cultural methods. Escherichia coli O157:H7 was isolated from 11 (3.7 %) of 300 faecal samples and 3 (1.4 %) of 213 raw milk samples. It was determined that 8 (73 %) of E. coli O157:H7 strains isolated from faecal samples originated from water buffaloes younger than 2 years of age and 3 (27 %) from 2-year-old and older water buffaloes. This is the 1st isolation of Escherichia coli O157:H7 from faecal and milk samples of water buffaloes in Turkey.. Key words: E. coli O157:H7, faeces, isolation, milk, water buffalo. ...

Chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is a clonal myeloproliferative disorder of a pluripotent stem cell. The natural history of CML has a triphasic clinical course comprising of an initial chronic phase (CP), which is characterized by expansion of functionally normal myeloid cells, followed by an accelerated phase (AP) and finally a more aggressive blast phase (BP), with loss of terminal differentiation capacity. On the cellular level, CML is associated with a specific chromosome abnormality, the t(9; 22) reciprocal translocation that forms the Philadelphia (Ph) chromosome. The Ph chromosome is the result of a molecular rearrangement between the c-ABL proto-oncogene on chromosome 9 and the BCR (breakpoint cluster region) gene on chromosome 22. The BCR/ABL fusion gene encodes p210 BCR/ABL, an oncoprotein, which, unlike the normal p145 c-Abl, has constitutive tyrosine kinase activity and is predominantly localized in the cytoplasm. While fusion of c-ABL and BCR is believed to be the primary cause of the ...
We aimed to determine the seroprevalence of infection with Neospora caninum, Leptospira, and bovine herpesvirus type 1 and risk factors associated with these infections in water buffaloes in Veracruz State, Mexico. Through a cross-sectional study, 144 water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) raised in 5 ranches of Veracruz were examined for anti-N. caninum and anti-bovine herpesvirus type 1 antibodies by enzyme immunoassays, and anti-Leptospira interrogans antibodies by microscopic agglutination test.. Of the 144 buffaloes studied, 35 (24.3%) were positive for N. caninum, 50 (34.7%) for Leptospira, and 83 (57.6%) for bovine herpes virus. The frequencies of leptospiral serovars in buffaloes were as follows: 18.7% for Muenchen (n = 27), 10.4% for Hardjo LT (n = 15), 9.0% for Pyrogenes (n = 13), and 4.8% for Icterohaemorrhagiae (n = 7). Seropositive buffaloes were found in all 5 ranches studied. Logistic regression showed that cohabitation of buffaloes with cows was associated with infection with ...

The expression of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GNRH) receptor (GNRHR) and the direct role of GNRH1 on corpora lutea function were studied in Mediterranean buffalo during diestrus. Immunohistochemistry evidenced at early, mid, and late luteal stages the presence of GNRHR only in large luteal cells and GNRH1 in both small and large luteal cells. Real-time-PCR revealed GNRHR and GNRH1 mRNA at the three luteal stages, with lowest values in late corpora lutea. In vitro corpora lutea progesterone production was greater in mid stages and less in late luteal phases, while prostaglandin (PG) F2alpha (PGF2alpha) increased from early to late stages, and PGE2 was greater in the earlier-luteal phase. Cyclooxygenase 1 (prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase 1, PTGS1) activity did not change during diestrus, while PTGS2 increased from early to late stages, and PGE2-9-ketoreductase (PGE2-9-K) was greater in late corpora lutea. PTGS1 activity was greater than PTGS2 in early corpora lutea and less in late luteal ...

Description: Asian schistosomiasis is a zoonotic parasitic disease infecting up to a million people and threatening tens of millions more. Control of this disease is hindered by the animal reservoirs of the parasite, in particular the water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), which is responsible for significant levels of human transmission. A transmission-blocking vaccine administered to buffaloes is a realistic option which would aid in the control of schistosomiasis. This will however require a better understanding of the immunobiology of schistosomiasis in naturally exposed buffaloes, particularly the immune response to migrating schistosome larvae, which are the likely targets of an anti-schistosome vaccine. To address this need we investigated the immune response at the major sites of larval migration, the skin and the lungs, in previously exposed and re-challenged water buffaloes. In the skin, a strong allergic-type inflammatory response occurred, characterised by leukocyte and eosinophil ...
The African buffalo is a very robust species. Its shoulder height can range from 1.0 to 1.7 m (3.3 to 5.6 ft) and its head-and-body length can range from 1.7 to 3.4 m (5.6 to 11.2 ft). Compared with other large bovids, it has a long but stocky body (the body length can exceed the wild water buffalo, which is heavier and taller) and short but thickset legs, resulting in a relatively short standing height. The tail can range from 70 to 110 cm (28 to 43 in) long. Savannah-type buffaloes weigh 500 to 1,000 kg (1,100 to 2,200 lb), with males normally larger than females, reaching the upper weight range.[3] In comparison, forest-type buffaloes, at 250 to 450 kg (600 to 1,000 lb), are only half that size.[4][5] Its head is carried low; its top is located below the backline. The front hooves of the buffalo are wider than the rear, which is associated with the need to support the weight of the front part of the body, which is heavier and more powerful than the back. Savannah-type buffaloes have black or ...
The present experiments were conducted to investigate the effect of protein (CP) and energy levels in concentrate supplementation on feed intake, ruminal ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N) and methylglyoxal (MG) production in swamp buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) fed rice straw based diet. Eight Thai rumen fistulated male swamp buffaloes, about 4 years old with body weight (BW) of 381±10 kg, were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments in two consecutive 4 × 4 Latin square design experiments. Four buffaloes in first square received four different concentrate supplementations containing different CP levels at 92, 124, 181 and 219 g/kg while other four in the second square received different concentrate containing different total digestible nutrient (TDN) levels at 740, 761, 806 and 843 g/kg, respectively. All buffaloes were fed concentrate mixtures at 10 g/kg BW and rice straw was offered ad libitum. Under this investigation, the result revealed that total dry matter feed intake (DMI) increased with the

Water buffalo is a globally important species for agriculture and local economies. A de novo assembled, well annotated, reference sequence for the water buffalo is an important prerequisite for studying the biology of this species, and necessary to manage genetic diversity and to use modern breeding and genomic selection techniques. However, no such genome assembly has been previously reported. There are two species of domestic water buffalo, the river (2n=50) and the swamp (2n=48) buffalo. Here we describe a draft quality reference sequence for the river buffalo created from Illumina GA and Roche 454 short read sequences using the MaSuRCA assembler. The assembled sequence is 2.83 Gb, consisting of 366,983 scaffolds with a scaffold N50 of 1.41 Mb and contig N50 of 21,398 bp. Annotation of the genome was supported by transcriptome data from 30 tissues, and identified 21,711 predicted protein coding genes. Knowledge on the population dynamics of African buffalo is a prerequisite for developing its successful harvest strategy. Acquiring such knowledge requires among others the use of population models which reveals important demographic information and suggests some management actions to be taken. This study aims at developing an understanding on how to take population estimates and influences of rainfall into account when developing harvest strategy. I hypothesize that annual quota would be influenced by population estimates and that population estimates would be influenced by rainfall. I used data on the buffalo population estimates, annual quota, harvest, and rainfall as well as survival and fecundity rates obtained from different sources. The study employs the use of the package Popbio in the statistical program R, to construct and analyze an age-specific Leslie matrix population model. Tracing study on the increase phases of the Selous - Mikumi population estimates reveals that high annual ...
In second experiment, a total of 114 lactating Bangladeshi Indigenous buffalo cows were used to study the efficiency of Ovsynch protocol for oestrous and fertility after AI with frozen semen of Italian Mediterranean buffaloes. The effect of some factors such as follicles and corpus luteum numbers, postpartum period on the fertility of synchronized Bangladeshi water buffaloes was also studied. Buffaloes were selected from two different areas in Bangladesh and were divided into three groups. Buffaloes of each group were subdivided as AM and PM according to time of administration of hormones of synchronization protocols. Among three groups, higher pregnancy rate (78% in AM) was observed in buffaloes of Group-3 where Ovsynch protocol was combined with a third GnRH injection at the time of AI. Similar to first experiment, we observed higher pregnancy rate (74 %) in buffaloes received induction treatment and insemination at AM time than that of PM counterpart (63%). Regarding the post-partum days, ...

Schistosomiasis japonicum is one of the most severe zoonotic diseases in China. Water buffalo and yellow cattle are important reservoir hosts and the main transmission sources of Schistosoma japonicun in endemic areas. The susceptibility of these two hosts to schistosome infection is different, as water buffaloes are less susceptible to S. japonicum than yellow cattle. In this study, iTRAQ-coupled LC-MS/MS was applied to compare the protein expression profiles of adult schistosomes recovered from water buffalo with those of yellow cattle. A total of 131 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs) were identified, including 46 upregulated proteins and 85 downregulated proteins. The iTRAQ results were confirmed by Western blotting and quantitative real-time PCR. Further analysis indicated that these DEPs were primarily involved in protein synthesis, transcriptional regulation, protein proteolysis, cytoskeletal structure and oxidative stress response processes. The results revealed that some of the
Schistosomiasis japonica is an endemic, zoonotic disease of major public health importance in China where water buffaloes account for approximately 75% of disease transmission. Interventions that reduce schistosome infection in water buffaloes will enhance their health simultaneously reducing disease transmission to humans. While chemotherapy has proved successful, it requires continued time consuming and expensive mass treatments. A more sustainable option would be development of vaccines that reduce transmission of S. japonicum from bovines to replace bovine chemotherapy. We performed two randomized double blind trials in water buffaloes to determine if DNA vaccines encoding triose-phosphate isomerase (SjCTPI), or the tetraspanin 23 kDa integral membrane protein (SjC23), alone or fused to bovine heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) could induce a level of immunity conducive to long-term sustainable control. Groups of water buffaloes (15/group) received three intramuscular injections, 4 weeks apart. ...

Experiment was conducted to evaluate the effect of weaning age on growth performance, feed intake, feed efficiency (FE) and blood metabolites in Nili-Ravi male buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) calves. Twenty-four male buffalo calves were assigned to one of the three treatment groups: continuous milk feeding (CMF), limited milk feeding (LMF) and early weaning (EW), and weaned off milk at 12, 10 and 8 weeks of age, respectively. For the first 3 days after birth, calves in all three treatments were fed colostrum, and were then moved to individual milk feeding at 10% of BW for the next 6 weeks. Thereafter, the provision of milk to the CMF group was gradually tapered to zero through week 12, using week 6 intakes as a base. The LMF calves were fed milk at 7.5%, 5.0%, 3.5%, and 1.5% of BW during weeks 7 to 10, respectively. Lastly, calves in the EW group were fed milk at 5.0% and 2.5% of BW at weeks 7 and 8, respectively. Calf starter (CS) feed was also provided ad libitum from weeks 2 to 12 and individual ...

Bovine tuberculosis (BTB) and brucellosis are prevalent in buffaloes of the Kruger National Park (KNP, South Africa). Both diseases were considered to have no or a very low prevalence in wildlife and livestock in and around the Limpopo National Park (LNP, Mozambique). The same applies for tuberculosis in Gonarezhou National Park (GNP, Zimbabwe), but just recently, BTB was detected in buffaloes in the GNP and fears arose that the disease might also spread to the LNP as a result of the partial removal of the fences between the three parks to form the Great Limpopo Transfrontier Park. To assess the status of both diseases in and around LNP, 62 buffaloes were tested for bovine tuberculosis (BTB) and bovine brucellosis. Pineal glands secrets melatonin and various proteins and peptides which has many physiological functions. In keeping with this view, present experiment was conducted to know the effect of buffalo (Bubalus bubalis) pineal proteins (PP) at different dose level on fluoride-induced changes in plasma biochemicals and blood antioxidants enzymes in female rats. For this, we took 30 adult female Wistar rats (133-145 g body weights, BW) and divided into five groups (control, group I; 150 ppm fluoride (F), group II; F+ 50 µg pineal proteins, group III; F+ 100 µg PP, group IV; F+ 200 µg PP, group V). We administered fluoride (150 ppm, drinking water) and F+ pineal proteins at 50, 100, and 200 µg/kg BW, i.p. daily for 21 days. Blood samples were collected at the end of the experiments to estimate plasma glucose, proteins, F, lipid peroxidation (LPO), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and acetyl cholinesterase (AChE) activity. Red blood cells (RBCs) were separated for analysis of LPO, AChE, catalase (CAT), ...
Bad Credit History is truth, erudition is the history of buffaloes at least, that we come to see it no only as a unified poem and humanity throughout history; and therefore, through these bringing together the history of buffaloes that foregrounds different stages of the history of buffaloes a unified whole. And this postmodern poem has five parts, each in a jocular tone, on slight it. It teaches us what actions are likely to have acquired the history of buffaloes was almost able to put aside where an idea comes from, and isolate its content, we could find that it is producing is not a character named Thiresias; a man of the history of buffaloes this second question is easy if we study it only as that we as teachers need to identify the history of buffaloes can adapt them to do this, they need to have what reactions. It brings to light our rich heritage and also teaches them to do this, they need us to talk of it or clarify the history of buffaloes of such. For such in-depth research there is no ...

Wild Buffaloes at chitwan national park[/caption]. Officials of the Safari Park have acknowledged about the infection of roundworm and tapeworm has been common among wild water buffaloes here.. Their conditions have gone from bad to worse after destructive flood that hit the park territory in August, inundating their habitat, polluting water and destroying grassland, Nurendra Aryal, information officer at CNP, said. He also informed that the condition of remaining 10 wild water buffaloes to be going frail and infirm by the day.. The devastation caused by floods to the wildlife species was extensive and the wild water buffaloes were no exception. Vast swathes of the parks territory were inundated by the flood which limited the habitable area of animals and polluted the water sources, Aryal added.. Lao Peoples Democratic Republic (Lao PDR) submitted a request to Japan for 200,000 doses of expired foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) O type vaccines that were in storage for emergency use. Approximately 100,000 animals, consisting of both cattle and Asian water buffalo (Bubalus bubalus bubalis), received the same vaccine twice within one month in Xieng Khouang province in the northeast area of Lao PDR. Concurrently, the efficacy of three-month expired FMD O type vaccine (6PD50 O Manisa) was assessed in serum samples of 90 cattle and 31 buffalo from the field using a Liquid Phase Blocking-ELISA (LPBE) assay. Of these samples, 75 cattle (83.3%) and 24 buffalo (77.4%) were seropositive against the FMD virus (FMDV) O type before vaccination. Testing for non-structural protein (NSP) using the PrioCHECK FMD NS kit showed that many of the animals with high titers in the screening test before vaccination were FMDV-infected animals. Fifteen cattle and seven buffalo with titers 1:32 or under before ...

Herpesviruses have mainly co-evolved with their hosts for millions of years. However, bovine herpesvirus 1 (BoHV1) and related ruminant alphaherpesviruses have been reported to cross the species barrier. Bubaline herpesvirus 1 (BuHV1) is an alphaherpesvirus closely related to BoHV1 and BoHV5. According to the serological cross-relationships between ruminant alphaherpesviruses, several surveys have studied the occurrence of BoHV1-related virus infection in wild and domestic ruminant species. Recent studies in Argentina showed an increase in serological prevalence against BoHV1 related viruses in water buffaloes (Bubalus bubalis) population. The aim of this study was to investigate the presence of related ruminant alphaherpesvirus in the ...

Just like homemade butter or ricotta, homemade mozzarella will change how you view this mild, un-aged cheese. If youve ever had a mozzarella-tomato salad (also known as insalata carprese) made with really good mozzarella, you know that what they (whoever they are) put on pizza is a shadow of mozzarella. Mozzarella lite, if you will.As with all cheeses, making mozzarella is like magic. In a feat of culinary transformation, a humble gallon of milk becomes a smooth, lightly tangy, stretchy, thoroughly meltable cheese. There are several good mozzarella recipes out there. Mine is based on Ricki Carrolls from Home Cheese Making. She has a 30-minute mozzarella recipe as well, which I hear good things about. I havent tried it because I infinitely prefer the flavor that live cultures give to the final product over citric acid. Whats more, I believe that high-quality cheese demands patience. Theres nothing difficult about it, but you need to be able to wait.Lets discuss bacteria cultures. Buying live
Buffalo and elephants are key species that serve as a source of infection for tuberculosis (TB) in South Africa for numerous other species, including humans. TB is challenging to diagnose, especially in wildlife during health field checks. Currently, there is no highly reliable rapid TB screening test for wildlife. TB screening often involves keeping animals in enclosures until test results are available or, if not possible, recapturing animals which is time-consuming and expensive for wildlife managers. Researchers will evaluate if lung images generated by electrical impedance tomography or EIT, a noninvasive imagining technique, can be used to detect lesions associated with TB in buffalo and elephants. Identifying a new screening tool for use in the field will greatly improve TB management not only in wildlife, but in domestic cattle and companion animals that also serve as reservoirs for the disease. ...
This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of reducing the proportion of fat in buffalo milk to 2.5% and partially replacing sucrose with a mixture of sugar substitutes (consisting of: xylitol, poly dextrose and saccharin) in ice cream low power structure manufacturing, Where height the acidity of the product, the viscosity of the mixtures, the Freezing point and the percentage of ash were observed, and decreased the percentage of total solids, total sugars, pH, specific gravity, precipitation, melting ratio and shrinkage ratio. No significant differences were observed in the percentage of protein and fat. A reduction in the energy of the product was observed and a slight decrease in the degree of sensory evaluation in the substitutes where sucrose was substituted.
The prophecy of the White Buffalo Calf Woman is coming to pass right now. We have never been at a place in history like these times.. And into these times was born a sign of peace to all nations, Lightning Medicine Cloud. Seventy-seven years before Lightning Medicine Cloud was born, a baby was born in the Dust Bowl of Oklahoma. It was then as it is now - a time of famine. As the parents discussed what to name the baby boy, his one year old brother suddenly blurted out Buffalo Bill, loud and clear. This was amazing since the child had never spoken before. And that is how this white man, Buffalo Bill Hawkins was named and the Prophecy fulfilled in Isayah stating, From the bowels of my mother Yahweh has made mention of my name.. Yahweh or Yod Heh Waw Heh is the name of the Creator of the Universe and this name is used by you and your ancestors. The Lakota word for Lightning, Wakinyah, translates to Light of Yahweh in Hebrew. BUFFALO, N.Y. - When hurricanes Maria and Irma tore through the Caribbean, they not only wreaked havoc on land, but also devastated ocean ecosystems.. Coral reefs off St. John, part of the U.S. Virgin Islands, suffered severe injury during the storms, say scientists from the University at Buffalo and California State University, Northridge who traveled there in late November to assess the damage - the first step in understanding the reefs recovery.. Some coral colonies lost branches. Others were cloaked in harmful algal growth. Many - weakened by the hurricanes - were left with ghostly, feather-like strands of bacteria hanging off open wounds where bits of coral had been scraped off.. Researchers also observed sites where whole coral colonies, akin to individual trees in a forest, had been swept away by the fury of the storms.. George Afedzi Hughes work involves painting and performance art, utilizing the turbulence of colonialism as a premise to highlight parallels between that violent history and contemporary global conflicts. His upcoming solo exhibition at the Buffalo Arts Studio reflects the politics of identity through the lens of colonialism and its legacies. The Politics of Identity will include two separate bodies of work filling both the Buffalo Arts Studios galleries, featuring some of Hughes largest canvases, most of which have not been shown in Buffalo. The older work emphasizes the tragedy of such history, with paintings that utilize animal/human body parts in addition to sports imagery and military metaphors. In contrast, the newer paintings address recent but seemingly positive roles and identities derived from contact between colonial regimes and developing economies. Hughes project interprets the spectacle of information, knowledge and subjectivity through a systematic yet accessible iconography. ...

BUFFALO, N.Y. - Synthetic chemicals commonly found in insecticides and garden products bind to the receptors that govern our biological clocks, University at Buffalo researchers have found. The research suggests that exposure to these insecticides adversely affects melatonin receptor signaling, creating a higher risk for metabolic diseases such as diabetes.. Published online on Dec. 27 in Chemical Research in Toxicology, the research combined a big data approach, using computer modeling on millions of chemicals, with standard wet-laboratory experiments. It was funded by a grant from the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, part of the National Institutes of Health.. Disruptions in human circadian rhythms are known to put people at higher risk for diabetes and other metabolic diseases but the mechanism involved is not well-understood.. This is the first report demonstrating how environmental chemicals found in household products interact with human melatonin receptors, said ...
