Microsatellite markers were isolated in Dyckia distachya, an endangered bromeliad from southern Brazil, which will be useful to assess the population genetic structure and reproductive success in introduced and natural populations of this species. Twenty microsatellite loci were developed from an enriched genomic library, and nine of these were amplified. The loci were characterized in 43 individuals from introduced and wild D. distachya populations. All nine loci were polymorphic, with four to ten alleles per locus. In an introduced population the observed and expected heterozygosities ranged from 0.136-0.667 and 0.543-0.877, respectively, while in a wild population it ranged from 0.000 to 0.895 and from 0.050 to 0.811, respectively. The development of these microsatellite markers will contribute to investigations of the reproductive potential and viability of introduced populations of D. distachya as well as the single known wild population. Cross-amplification in other Bromeliaceae species was
Aechmea fasciata is an epiphytic Bromeliad from Brazil. Aechmeas are among the most beautiful of all Bromeliads for indoor decoration. Large, colorful blooms rise high above the vase-shaped rosette of leaves. Blooming time: Most Bromeliads will flower naturally when they reach maturity; they can also be made to flower by supplying the substances which begin bud formation: for example, enclose the entire plant ( with its cup empty of water to prevent excessive humidity buildup) in a plastic bag together with a ripe apple. The apple gives off ethylene gas which stimulates flowering in Bromeliads. Leave plant and apple in the plastic bag for 7-10 days; f lower will appear in 1-2 months. Culture: Add peatmoss to an equal volume of general house plant mix for a humusy and well drained combination. Soil may dry out between waterings. Keep water in central cup formed by leafy rosette. Fertilize every 1-2 months, applied to the soil. Or fill the cup with half-strength dilution of fertilizer every month. ...

The angiosperm family Bromeliaceae comprises over 3.500 species characterized by exceptionally high morphological and ecological diversity, but a very low genetic variation. In many genera, plants are vegetatively very similar which makes determination of non flowering bromeliads difficult. This is particularly problematic with living collections where plants are often cultivated over decades without flowering. DNA barcoding is therefore a very promising approach to provide reliable and convenient assistance in species determination. However, the observed low genetic variation of canonical barcoding markers in bromeliads causes problems. In this study the low-copy nuclear gene Agt1 is identified as a novel DNA barcoding marker suitable for molecular identification of closely related bromeliad species. Combining a comparatively slowly evolving exon sequence with an adjacent, genetically highly variable intron, correctly matching MegaBLAST based species identification rate was found to be approximately

TY - JOUR. T1 - Viability and germination of seeds of Puya raimondii Harms (Bromeliaceae). AU - Vadillo, Giovana. AU - Suni, Mery. AU - Cano, Asunción. PY - 2004/1/1. Y1 - 2004/1/1. N2 - Puya raimondii Harms is an endemic species of the highlands of Peru and Bolivia between 3200 to 4800 m of altitude with noticeable great size and beauty. It is considered threatened species; therefore it is urgent to know the factors that affect its viability and germination of their seeds; aspects focused work presently. The seeds were collected in 1999 and 2000 in Huashta Cruz (Pueblo Libre, Ancash, Peru) and they classified as lots (considering their origin and appearance). They were determined their moisture content and the viability (quality). By means of germination tests, it was evaluated in 5 lots the effect of the light and temperature. The seeds presented different viability which depended on the conditions they were exposed in situ and that it is correlated inversely with its content of humidity, ...

The annual allotetraploid species Aegilops geniculata harbors a number of traits relevant for wheat improvement. An effective cytogenetic method has yet to be developed to distinguish between each of its 14 chromosomes. A fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) approach was adopted to describe the karyotype of Ae. geniculata. Each of its 14 chromosomes was unequivocally recognized using a cocktail of three probes, namely pTa-713, (AAC)5 and pTa71. FISH karyotyping was then used to detect and characterize selections from an Ae. geniculata × bread wheat wide cross of a chromosome 1Mg disomic addition line and three 4Mg(4B) substitution lines. The identity of the addition line was confirmed by the presence of Glu-M1, detected both using an SDS-PAGE separation of endosperm proteins and by applying a PCR assay directed at the Glu-M1 locus. The status of the substitution lines was validated by genotyping using a wheat single nucleotide polymorphism chip. FISH karyotyping based on pTa-713, (AAC)5 and pTa71
At the time of this early stage of Satyrinae evolution (ca 60-50 Myr ago), dicotyledonous plants were dominant in the vast forests that covered the planet (Willis & McElwain 2002) and the only readily available monocots were forest-dwelling early lineages such as Arecales, Liliales, Zingiberales and basal Poales (Bromeliaceae). Early diverging Satyrinae lineages (Morphini, Brassolini and Amathusiini) expanded their host ranges to include young lineages of Poales and other monocotyledonous plants from forested habitats (i.e. Bromeliaceae and Zingiberales families, respectively). Extant Satyrinae in the early diverging lineages continue to be mainly forest dwellers.. At the same time, graminoid Poales (Poaceae) were poor in species and restricted to marshy and nutrient-poor habitats (Linder & Rudall 2005), making them ineffectual host plants for driving diversification (Janz et al. 2006). During the Tertiary, dramatic global climate changes, such as lower levels of CO2, decreased temperature and ...
Bromeliads are members of a plant family called Bromeliaceae. The family contains over 3000 described species in approximately 56 genera plus thousands of hybrids. The most well known bromeliad is the pineapple. Plants are widely represented in their natural climates across the Americas. They can be found at altitudes from sea level to 4200 meters, from rainforests to deserts. Approximately half the species are epiphytes, some are lithophytes, and some are terrestrial. Accordingly, these plants can be found in the Andean highlands, from northern Chile to Colombia, in the Sechura Desert of coastal Peru, in the cloud forests of Central and South America, in southern United States from southern Virginia to Florida to Texas, and in far southern Arizona.. In general, they are easy to grow, require little care and reward the grower with brilliant blooms and spectacular ornamental foliage. They come in a wide range of sizes from tiny miniatures to giants. They can be grown indoors in cooler climates ...
This study presents a list of species of the two most important families with epiphytic elements, Bromeliaceae and Orchidaceae, from the Reserva de la Biosfera Barranca de Metztitlán (RBBM), the largest Reserve in Hidalgo, Mexico. Thirty-four species are included, 26 corresponding to species in three genera of bromeliads, and eight species in six genera of orchids. The new records represent 26.5% of the total listed in the area; nine of them are new records for the Reserve (RBBM) and one is new for Hidalgo State. This study reveals that endemism for both families is very important in the Reserve (55.88%), since it includes 13 Mexican bromeliads, of which two are endemic to Hidalgo and one to the Reserve, and three orchids, two endemic to Mexico and one to the Reserve. We found species with different types of relative abundance: rare (16) and occasional (7). Additionally, we include information about the category (IUCN, CITES, NOM-059-SEMARNAT) as well as uses reported in the literature for the species
Family Tingidae (lace bugs). Adults and nymphs of Megalocysta gibbifera (Picado) (Hemiptera: Tingidae) were noted to feed on Aechmea bromeliad leaves at Orosí in Costa Rica, and the nymphs were sometimes parasitized by larvae of small wasps possibly of Braconidae (Picado 1913). Their discoverer was perplexed that they should often be found stuck firmly in the gelatinous gum exuded by their host plants. This writer wonders whether the conditions for adhesion of the tingids were created by the method of their capture (dismembering bromeliads using considerable force and perhaps accidentally pressing the insects into the gum); his observations are that such gum is secreted only when bromeliads and members of some related families undergo gross physical damage (for example by breaking a bromeliad flower spike, or tearing the leaves from a stem); thus, under normal circumstances no gum would be exuded, so the tingids would not encounter it. ...

This is definitely a Four Star Read!. Q: From the title alone, we can tell that The Beautiful Ashes of Gomez Gomez is going to be a unique tale. How would you describe your new release?. A recent article in AFA Journal about the book said I was a little crazy. I had to laugh. Im not much of a planner when I write. I tend to take a few steps, see where the trail goes, and try my best not to trip. I have to say, with Gomez Gomez it was quite an interesting hike. Its certainly not your typical faith-based novel. It lands in the literary fiction genre (like most of the things I write), and Id say its a bit funky, sometimes over the top, and rarely going where youre expecting it to go. Its definitely a character-driven tale, but once in a while a character comes along who probably shouldnt be behind the wheel. Gomez Gomez is one of those guys. Best to just buckle up, hang on, and keep your hands and feet inside the vehicle at all times.. Q: Without giving too much away, tell us a little bit ...

The study provides insights into the dynamic processes of vascular epiphyte vegetation in two host tree species of lowland forest in Panama. Further, a novel approach is presented to examine the possible role of host tree identity in the structuring of vascular epiphyte communities: For three locally common host tree species (Socratea exorrhiza, Marila laxiflora, Perebea xanthochyma) we created null models of the expected epiphyte assemblages assuming that epiphyte colonization reflected random distribution of epiphytes in the forest. In all three tree species, abundances of the majority of epiphyte species (69 – 81 %) were indistinguishable from random, while the remaining species were about equally over- or underrepresented compared to their occurrence in the entire forest plot. Permutations based on the number of colonized trees (reflecting observed spatial patchiness) yielded similar results. Finally, a Canonical Correspondence Analysis also confirmed host-specific differences in ...

It is a glycoproteic proteolytic enzyme present in the fruit, but at higher concentrations in the stem of Pineapple from which is extracted (Ananas Sativus - Family Bromeliaceae). Bromelain performs an anti-inflammatory, anti-edema, digestive action, it is able to enhance the action of antibiotics and drugs. In the inflamed tissue it reduces the vasodilation, capillary permeability, leukocyte migration and the local pain, by inhibiting the thromboxane synthetase enzyme which converts prostaglandin H2 into pro-inflammatory prostaglandins and thromboxanes thus increasing the production of prostaglandins with anti-inflammatory activity to the detriment of those with pro-inflammatory activity. Hence the safe use of bromelain compared to NSAIDs that inhibit cyclooxygenase, blocking the synthesis of prostaglandins and procuring a gastrointestinal damage. It is therefore particularly effective in the treatment of tissue inflammation associated with trauma, in localized inflammations especially in the ...
Control - Obviously the best route to take is prevention. Keep an eye on your watering habits; give your bromeliad a chance to dry out a little between watering, and water only the soil surface. Avoid overhead irrigation and splashing water on the leaves, this helps with spreading the disease. Water your bromeliad plant early in the day to promote rapid drying of the foliage. Its very important that you separate infected plants from apparently healthy plants when disease is first noticed. Carefully remove and destroy seriously infected plants and plant parts. Handle these plants with disposable plastic gloves to avoid contaminating other plants. Be sure to sterilize any contaminated pruning knives, tools etc ...

Guzmania is an epiphytic bromeliad; it needs high humidity and bright but indirect light. There should be water in the cup at all times (preferably rain water) and the soil can be kept slightly damp (as a source of ambient humidity). Once it blooms, the central rosette will naturally die. There should be baby pups or offsets at the base that will grow up and take its place, or you can carefully separate them off and plant them into their own pots. In the meantime you can trim off the dead portions ...
ARLINGTON -- Outfielder Carlos Gomez was on crutches and wearing a boot on his right foot in the Rangers clubhouse after a 3-1 loss to the Yankees on Saturday afternoon. Gomez had to leave the game in the second inning after he rolled his right ankle coming out of the batters box. Gomez underwent an MRI after the game, and the results showed a mild high ankle sprain. The Rangers dont know how long he will be out. There is no timetable, manager Jeff Banister said. Gomez turned the ankle after hitting a ground ball to second baseman Starlin Castro. He came out of the box limping badly, and then he went down to the ground. He had to be helped off the field by Banister and trainer Kevin Harmon.

Bromeliaceae (the bromeliads) is a family of monocot flowering plants of around 3,170 species native mainly to the tropical Americas, with a few species found in the American subtropics and one in tropical west Africa, Pitcairnia feliciana. It is the one of the basal families within the Poales and is unique because it is the only family within the order that has septal nectaries and inferior ovaries. These inferior ovaries characterize the Bromelioideae, a subfamily of the Bromeliaceae. The family includes both epiphytes, such as Spanish moss (Tillandsia usneoides), and terrestrial species, such as the pineapple (Ananas comosus). Many bromeliads are able to store water in a structure formed by their tightly-overlapping leaf bases. However, the family is diverse enough to include the tank bromeliads, grey-leaved epiphytic Tillandsia species that gather water only from leaf structures called trichomes, and a large number of desert-dwelling succulents. The largest bromeliad is Puya raimondii, which ...
a. The capability of collecting atmospheric water (rain, fog, frost) and to distribute it on the leaf surface, contemporaneously reducing the loss caused by evaporation (Tomlinson 1969, Benzing 1979). b. The protection against sun radiation by the increase in reflecting surface (Benzing 1980). c. The collection and the mechanical blocking of mineral nutrients and organic particles on leaves that are then transported inside the leaf. d. Caption and mechanical retaining of organic particles and mineral nutrients on leaves and later entering inside (Tukey 1970, Benzing 1980, Brighigna 1991). e. The hosting of degrading phyllospheric microflora (bacteria, fungi, yeasts) and nitrogen-fixing cyanobacteria. The presence of these last assumes an important ecological meaning for these epiphytic plants (Favilli et al. 1975, Brighigna et al. 1992). Hence we are convinced that to define ecological types in Tillandsia it is not possible to neglect the different weight in different species in all the above ...
University of Wyoming botany Professor Greg Brown has added a new honor to his list of achievements: A new genus of plants has been named after him.. Gregbrownia is a member of the Bromeliaceae family -- commonly known as the pineapple family. The plants have a large rosette (about 1 meter in diameter) of long, strap-shaped leaves and a large cluster of flowers, ranging from yellow-green to white. The rosette of leaves also will hold a large volume of water. Members of the genus can grow either on trees or land, and are found in the Andes Mountains of northern Peru and Ecuador. The genus has four species: Gregbrownia brownii, Gregbrownia fulgens, Gregbrownia hutchisonii and Gregbrownia lyman-smithii.. Brown specializes in plant systematics, a branch of botany that involves the identification, naming, classification and evolution of plants. His research focuses on the Bromeliaceae family.. Description Pineapple, Ananas comosus, is a tropical, herbaceous perennial and is the leading edible member of the Bromeliaceae family of plants which include many types of bromeliads. Unlike most other bromeliads, which are epiphytes and many are strikingly ornamental pineapples love sunlight. The pineapple plant has
Ananas is a plant genus of the bromeliad family (Bromeliaceae), native to South America and Central America, which includes the species Ananas comosus, the pineapple. This genus originated in Mesoamerica and was brought to the Caribbean Islands by the Carib natives. The oldest register with the representation of the fruit seems to be included in the Cascajal Block, attributed to the Olmec civilization. In 1493, Christopher Columbus first saw plants of this genus in Guadeloupe. It was brought from Brazil to Europe by the Italian, and from there was distributed to the Pacific Islands by the Spanish and the English. Commercial pineapple plantations were established in Hawaii, the Philippines, Southeast Asia, Florida, and Cuba. The pineapple has become one of the worlds most popular fruits. The tough leaves grow in large rosettes, arising basally from a crown. These leaves are long and lanceolate with a serrated or thorny margin. The flowers, arising from the heart of the rosette, each have their ...

This work studied the morphology and post-seminal development of seeds of Tillandsia gardneri Lindl., T. streptocarpa Baker, and T. stricta Sol. ex Sims (Bromeliaceae) from the Campos Gerais, State of Paraná, Southern Brazil. The seeds (ca. 2.0 mm long) presented plumose appendages at their micropylar end, an important structure in the taxonomy of the family since it represented an elaborate apparatus allowing effective wind-dispersal. Seeds germinated after circa twenty days. The haustorial cotyledon, responsible for the seedling nutrition, appeared first during the germination process. No cataphyll or primary roots developed. A small tank came along in the seedling, formed by the base of the sheath of the first leaf, which overlapped that of the second ...

Natural remedies from medicinal plants are considered to be effective and safe alternative treatment for diabetes mellitus. The aim of this study was to demonstrate the hypoglycaemic and antidiabetic activity of the aqueous extract of Icacina tracantha (tuber) (fam Icacinaceae)Ananas cosmos (fam. Bromeliaceae)and Uraria picta (leaves) (fam leguminosae) on an animal model of insulin resistance, a condition which predisposes to type 2 diabetes. The plants have a long history of use as anti-diabetic agents in western Nigeria. Method: 120 male Sprague-Dawley rats were assigned into two major groups. One group was fed on normal rat chow with the other group fed on a high calorie diet for four months a period sufficient for the animals to be fed to attain insulin resistance. The animals were then randomly assigned into different groups (each containing 6 male rats). The plant crude extracts were made by weighing specific dried quantities of each plant, boiling in distilled water for about 2 hours, ...

Plants that grow epiphytically are often adapted to hold water in a central cup or in leaf axils to maintain hydration given that they cannot access soil water. These bodies of water, called phytotelmata, are miniature temporary aquatic ecosystems. This water frequently contains a variety of microorganisms. The New Zealand native Collospermum hastatum (Colenso) Skottsb. (Asteliaceae) is known to hold water within the leaf axils; however, an assessment of algal communities within this habitat has never been undertaken. To remedy this lack of knowledge, water samples were obtained from the leaf axils of C. hastatum, with exotic bromeliads for comparison. Freycinetia banksii A.Cunn. and Astelia solandri A.Cunn. were also investigated, but did not contain sufficient water for further investigation. Urban bromeliads investigated had a wide range of organisms within the phytotelmata, including four genera of diatoms. No desmids were identified. Collospermum and Forest-sourced bromeliad water held a ...

As to their native terrain, they thrive from the U.S. State of Virginia all the way southward to southern Argentina - with the largest number of species being found in Brazil, Columbia, Costa Rico, Ecuador, Mexico and Peru.. So noted, it is important to also recognize that most Bromeliads are air plants (epiphytes) not parasites generally producing flowers only once in its lifetime. But they can retain their magnificent color up to two months or so. These plants perpetuate themselves via offshoots called keikis . . . which, by the way is Hawaiian for babies!. Their bracts and flowers are presented in a wide array of configurations vertically upward, corymbous (flat topped), cylindrical, ellipsoid, oblique, pendant, triangular and spherical. But before we go any further, lets clarify something. Like Poinsettia and Bougainvillea, that which we are calling flowers are actually their colorful bracts!. Many Bromeliads have a rather unique waterabsorbing system via scales on their leaves those ...
The Bromeliad plant does best in indirect sunlight with partial shade. To water, fill the cup at the base of the leaves. The water that collects in the pot should be emptied once a week to remove anything in the stagnant water. It is best to water your bromeliad with rainwater or distilled water ...
Do you want the good news or the bad news? We now have 8821 names on the International Bromeliad Cultivar Register of which 4366 are Neoregelia. If you wanted to buy one of these plants how lucky would you be? Many of the older ones would be very difficult to find. With many of the newer ones you could try contacting the hybridist but even then you could have problems. Let me explain.. In the good-old-days, Nurseries printed Catalogues and advertised their wares in various Newsletters and Journals. However, as Herb Plever from New York already pointed out these Catalogues are becoming few and far between and yet plants, especially hybrids, are still sold and purchased around the world.. Ever since I became Registrar in 2000 I have tried to point out the advantages of registering hybrids if only to give some way of identification compared to the names that just occur in Catalogues, which for want of a term I have always called Nurserymen s Names or NN for short. If mentioned in a Bromeliad ...

Selena Gomez is calling out The Good Fight for a reference to the kidney transplant that she received in 2017.. A scene that aired on the law drama last month featured some of the characters debating about what they could and could not joke about: Gomezs transplant was put in the latter category. Gomezs fans then sent RESPECT SELENA GOMEZ trending.. The actress and singer responded Tuesday. I am not sure how writing jokes about organ transplants for television shows has become a thing but sadly it has apparently, she wrote. I hope in the next writers room when one of these tasteless jokes are presented its called out immediately and doesnt make it on air.. She also thanked her dedicated fans, then went a step further. She asked them to sign up to be organ donors.. Gomezs own donor was a close friend, Francia Raisa. At the time, Gomez explained that the operation was necessary because of her struggle with lupus. And she spent some time out of the spotlight to recover. In the years ...

The nutrient elements needed for the optimum growth and yield of pear trees is vitally important to the pear growers. The knowledge of the amounts and kinds of fertilizer to apply to obtain this growth could increase the production and cut the costs for these growers. Field experiments have been made on the nutritional elements needed for pears, but the results were affected by many variants, such as the availability of the elements and rainfall. The growing of fruit trees in sand with controlled nutrient solutions added had been used to obtain data not possible to obtain under field conditions. Since other factors affect the absorption of the nutrient elements in the field experiments, an experiment for the application of varied nutrient solutions on one year old Anjou pear trees, grown in sand culture, was undertaken. The purpose was to try to determine the influence that the concentration and the ratio of nitrogen and phosphorus in the nutrient solutions would have on the amount of nitrogen ...
Introduction Use of unbalanced chemical fertilizers especially P, having low absorption efficiency and low solubility compounds with soil components, has resulted in the production and use of bio fertilizers (17, 23 and 29). Bio-fertilizer is a preservative material consisting of one or several specific beneficial micro-organisms or their metabolic products used to supply plant nutrients and development of root systems (29). There are a lot of micro-organisms in soil capabling help to plant nutrition and uptake of nutrient elements in different ways that can be mentioned by the dual symbiotic relation between micro-organism and plant. Mycorrhizal fungus and plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) such as Azotobacter and Pseudomonas are able to increase uptake of nutrient elements particularly when they are applied with others and hence they increase the yield of different crops (12, 14; 24 and 30). P solubilizing fungus and bacteria facilitate uptake of slowly diffusing nutrient ions such as P, Zn
Fatty acids constitute an important energy source for various tissues. The mechanisms that mediate and control uptake of free fatty acids from the circulation, however, are poorly understood. Here we show that efficient fatty-acid uptake by yeast cells requires the protein kinase Ypk1, the orthologue of the human serum- and glucocorticoid-induced kinase Sgk1. ypk1Δ mutant cells fail to grow under conditions that render cells auxotrophic for fatty acids, show a reduced uptake of radiolabelled or fluorescently labelled fatty acids, lack the facilitated component of the uptake activity, and have elevated levels of fatty acids in a bovine serum albumin (BSA) back-extractable compartment. Efficient fatty-acid uptake and/or incorporation requires the protein-kinase activity of Ypk1, because a kinase-dead point-mutant allele of YPK1 is defective in this process. This function of Ypk1 in fatty-acid uptake and/or incorporation is functionally conserved, because expression of the human Sgk1 kinase ...
I am a professional photographer specializing in nature photography and have photographed a number of bromeliads and other tropical plants that I cannot I.D. Most are are in Panama and Costa Rica, but are generally from gardens there without identification. Is there someone in your society who might be interested in helping me I.D. the plants in my photos? I have found images similar to some of my images on-line, but sometimes there are images of two different species, either of which appear to be the same as the one in my photo. For me, it would be a lucky guess if I got it right. I do not want to mis-identify the species in my photos since these will be available for publication purposes through my stock photo agencies. There is already more than enough mis-information available on the internet without my contributing more.. Is there some way to get these properly identified? Any help would be greatly appreciated.. Thank you,. Jon ...

Young pop stars Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez sparked rumors of a possible reunion on Thursday, when they were spotted together in Calabasas, Calif.. The singers dated for two years before separating in early 2013, and for the first time in months, they were photographed spending time together in Biebers exclusive gated community.. Both Bieber and Gomez were seen riding Segways around his neighborhood, and they consequently caused a traffic jam, as reported by Twitter.com user Nick Santisky to E! News.. He wrote, Bieber and Selena segwaying in the Oaks. She was so nice, so he yelled at us. Shoutout to @justinbieber for holding up all the traffic in the Oaks. Grow up…. Thanks to @justinbieber told us to f- off, and his bodyguards blocked the road, so hello to my new followers! Gotta admit, I was kinda starstruck by @selenagomez but @justinbieber ruined the moment.. Biebers representatives refused to comment on their reunion while E! News has yet to hear back from Gomezs team.. ...

Pups should be separated when theyre fairly large (maybe, say, when theyre 75-80% the height of the parent), ideally when theyve produced some roots of their own, with a clean knife (or you can just pull them apart, sometimes). Although some bromeliads will continue to offset for a long time, if you take off the pups (My oldest Aechmea fasciata has produced five offsets after two years post-flower, and I have a couple Guzmania lingulatas that have each produced six. In all three cases, the parent plants still seem healthy and functional and are not necessarily finished yet.), I have never tried re-potting a parent Vriesea splendens, so Im not sure if this would work to produce more pups, but I sure as hell intend to try when my large one starts to offset ...
The diamond weevil, E. imperialis, a large weevil mainly found in Brazil [25], appeared to be ideal for studying the photonic responses of biological photonic crystals. The weevils body is marked by rows of bright green dots on an otherwise black body (figure 1a). Investigation of the elytra by a light microscope reveals that the shiny dots are pits decorated with numerous scales, each of which has large, coloured domains with highly directional reflections (figure 1b). Upon slight rotation of the scales, reflecting domains vanish and new ones appear. These amazing scales have been studied since the early twentieth century [2]. Entimus imperialis appears to be unique when compared with related weevils [7,26,27], but also butterflies [13,14], in that its scales have very large photonic domains, up to approximately 50 µm2 in size (figure 1c), a factor of 5-10 larger in size than the photonic domains found in other species. The colours of the domains range from cyan blue to yellow orange.. In the ...
