The effects of Hurricane Irma in Florida were the costliest in the states history. Hurricane Irma developed from a tropical wave near the Cape Verde Islands on August 30. The storm quickly became a hurricane on August 31 and then a major hurricane shortly thereafter, but would oscillate in intensity over the next few days. By September 4, Irma resumed strengthening, and became a powerful Category 5 hurricane on the following day. The cyclone then struck Sint Maarten and the British Virgin Islands on September 6 and later crossed Little Inagua in the Bahamas on September 8. Irma briefly weakened to a Category 4, but re-intensified into a Category 5 hurricane before making landfall in the Sabana-Camagüey Archipelago of Cuba. After falling to Category 3 status due to land interaction, the storm re-strengthened into a Category 4 hurricane in the Straits of Florida. Irma struck Florida twice on September 10 - the first as a Category 4 at Cudjoe Key and the second on Marco Island as a Category 3. ...

Almost two and a half billion people live in the 52 independent and equal sovereign states which make up the group whose head is Her Majesty The Queen. The states all currently trade with Britain, albeit under existing European Union (EU) rules and regulations. Now Brussels MEPs, led by the German Greens, want the country to commit an act of extreme isolationism in its bid to adhere to its demands. In a statement issued earlier today, MEP Sven Giegold, who was educated in Britain, said the UK must ...

Alcoholic beverages have been around for centuries, sometimes being used for enjoyment and other times being used for special occasions or rituals. In the Virgin Islands, especially on St. Croix, rum is usually recognized as either the more typical choice of alcoholic drinks or the most notable. Throughout the years, Cruzan Rum has become a staple in our community and has even found itself gaining national and international acclaim. In small circles, some find joy in the beverages which may be less famous, but still hold a part of our history and culture, with local wines being made from gooseberries, ginger, sorrel, and other local sources.. While these might be the preferred drinks of today, this article seeks to explore drinks that may have been enjoyed in and around the Virgin Islands before the days of Christopher Columbus. These drinks were undoubtedly simpler because of the lack of technological advancements and we still see variations of some of these even today.. Here we have five ...
St. Thomas beautiful natural harbor welcomed the first settlers to the island and today it welcomes millions of visitors. Piers once dotted the waterfront area providing landing and loading space for trading ships. With time came change; donkey and horse drawn carts were replaced by automobiles. The waterfront area was filled in and a four-lane highway was built. The old warehouses with their piers jutting out into the harbor were landlocked. Today a stroll along the waterfront apron allows you to enjoy a terrific view of Charlotte Amalie; sailboats dotting the water, large cruise ships at the dock and seaplanes coming and going. Look around; imagine what the harbor and town might have looked liked 100 years ago, 200 years ago, longer!

This is a blow to the territory," said the second-term senator. "Many of our residents, including myself, have historically depended on LIAT to visit their families and to move products back and forth. The removal of this transportation linkage makes travel to other Caribbean islands more difficult and expensive, and it ultimately weakens the social and economic bonds between the Virgin Islands and our neighbors," Mr. Forde said.. The senator said he was particulary incensed at the lack of communication with Virgin Islands tourism officials and policymakers. . "To the best of my knowledge, no attempt to sit down with the Department of Tourism to discuss difficulties they may have been having with the routes and work out possible solutions," Mr. Forde noted. "My staff and I wrote and called LIAT Corporate Headquarters last month to seek clarification when we learned that tickets were no longer being sold for flights beyond March 1st. To date neither calls or emails have been answered.". Mr. ...

My blood tests came back negative for EBV, so the Dr. decided to test for CMV. It turns out that that is what my problem has been. CMV is cytomegalavirus and most people have been exposed to it, but it only causes problems in infants and immunosuppressed patients. Its symptoms are like mono with the low grade fever and fatigue. It was both a shock and a relief to learn. It is pretty rare, but can cause some problems. I had to be seen by an infection control doctor. I am now taking valcyte which is an antiviral medication. The doctor said that it should not take long to feel better if this is what is causing my fever. He wasnt completely sure about this. When I told him that I had just taken a vacation snorkeling in the Virgin Islands, he said that he would be looking into this to see if he could find any other likely disease I might have contracted. I am rooting for the CMV ...
