Craig Plain knew something was amiss when a long-term client in Vancouvers Downtown Eastside stopped coming into his pharmacy.. It was near Christmas this past year, and Plain and his staff at Pier Health Resource Centre (223 Main St.) started to ask around the tight-knit community if anyone had seen the missing client.. Nobody knew where he was, but we knew where he lived, Plain, 37, told Peace Arch News last week.. Sure enough, we went up to his room and found him, it was far too late… which really shook us. Just a totally sweet guy, worked very hard in the Downtown Eastside to make the Downtown Eastside better.. The man was one of 914 suspected overdose deaths in the province last year.. In the weeks leading up to the tragedy, Plain, who was born and raised in South Surrey and has been pharmacy manager at Pier Health for two years, had been working with the BC Centre for Disease Control to make naloxone - the life-saving overdose antidote - more accessible.. At the time, the BCDC was ...

Dr Ling is best known for his discovery P-glycoprotein, which sits on the surface of cancer cells and flushes out the anti-cancer drug before it has a chance to work, making cancer cells resistant to chemotherapy. Dr Ling observed that tumour cells had the ability of exploit this protein, which normally protects cells from toxic substances in the environment. Later research found that P-glycoproteins effects could be avoided in certain patients by giving them the drug cyclosporin.. As the name of the CCRA award suggests, Dr Ling has been an outstanding leader and mentor. He is the founding scientific director of the Terry Fox Research Institute. Previously, he served as vice-president of research at the British Columbia Cancer Agency, at which time he helped launch the Genome Sciences Centre. He has also served on numerous national and international boards and committees for cancer research.. Air pollution is a concern in British Columbia, Canada because of its effects on health and visibility. Air quality is influenced in British Columbia (BC) by numerous mountain ranges and valleys, which complicate atmospheric pollution dispersion and can lead to high concentrations of pollutants such as particulate matter from wood smoke (especially during stagnant atmospheric conditions/inversions). Air quality in much of BC is good compared to many areas of North America. This is particularly true for cities in BC such as the Greater Vancouver area and Victoria, British Columbia.[citation needed] Valley communities (e.g. Golden) may experience periods of poor air quality, particularly during stagnant atmospheric conditions. Two communities currently exceed the federal air quality standards; Prince George for particulate matter (PM2.5) and the community of Hope (in the Lower Fraser Valley) for ozone. Other communities are close to the PM2.5 standard, such as Quesnel and Kamloops. Communities ...

Davis M.K., Rajala J.L., Tyldesley S., Pickles T., Virani S.A.. Journal of Oncology 2015 2015 Article Number 820403. Background. While androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) reduces the risk of prostate cancer-specific mortality in high-risk localized prostate cancer, it adversely affects cardiovascular (CV) risk factor profiles in treated men. Methods. We retrospectively reviewed the charts of 100 consecutive men with intermediate- or high-risk localized prostate cancer referred to the British Columbia Cancer Agency for ADT. Data on CV risk factors and disease were collected and Framingham risk scores were calculated. Results. The median age of the study cohort was 73 years. Established cardiovascular disease was present in 25% of patients. Among patients without established CV disease, calculated Framingham risk was high in 65%, intermediate in 33%, and low in 1%. Baseline hypertension was present in 58% of patients, dyslipidemia in 51%, and diabetes or impaired glucose tolerance in 24%. ...
A newly-discovered technology that would help dentists and patients in the early detection of oral diseases is the most powerful tool available and recommended by oral health care professionals today.. The VELscope was developed and patented to British Columbia Cancer Agency in collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center, with funding provided in part by the US National Institutes of Health (NIH). This is a state-of-the-art technology that allows looking beneath the surface to detect potentially dangerous growths that may cause oral diseases such as cancer.. The VELscope emits a safe blue light into the oral cavity stimulating the tissue from the surface of the epithelium through to the basement membrane and into the stroma beneath, causing it to fluoresce. Thus, the different fluorescence responses can be viewed to help differentiate between normal and abnormal tissue.. The VELscope was studied with 620 patients within a dental school setting at the University of Washington. The study showed ...
Optident has revealed that it is the sole UK distributor of the Velscope, a breakthrough in the detection of mouth cancer. The launch was held at the companys headquarters in Ilkley, Leeds, with presentations from Dr Vinod Joshi, founder and chief executive of the Mouth Cancer Foundation, John Pohl, from LED Dental, and David Bloom from Senova Dental Studios based in Watford, Hertfordshire.. The Velscope is a small system developed by the Canadian company, LED Dental Inc., in conjunction with the British Columbia Cancer Agency and other institutions. It is used to shine a safe blue light into the patients mouth, which excites the mucosal tissue. This will show up as apple green when viewed through the special filters. Any abnormal tissue will appear as a dark patch. Once a suspicious area has been noticed the patient should then be referred for a biopsy to determine the diagnosis. The Velscope shows up problems that the naked eye cannot see, meaning that mouth cancers can be detected much ...

The VELscope® System is a revolutionary hand-held device that provides dentists, hygienists, and other oral health care professionals with an easy-to-use adjunctive mucosal examination system for the early detection of abnormal tissue. The VELscope System patented technology platform was developed by the British Columbia Cancer Agency in collaboration with MD Anderson Cancer Center, with funding provided in part by the NIH. It is based on the direct visualization of tissue fluorescence and the changes in fluorescence that occur when abnormalities are present. The VELscope System Handpiece emits a safe blue light into the oral cavity, which excites the tissue from the surface of the epithelium through to the basement membrane and into the stroma beneath, causing it to fluoresce. The clinician is then able to immediately view the different fluorescence responses to help differentiate between normal and abnormal tissue. In fact, the VELscopeSystem is the only adjunctive device cleared by the FDA ...

This research aims to determine the socio-economic contribution of small-scale fisheries in British Columbia. In order to do so, a definition of small-scale fisheries is needed, as there is currently no national working definition of this sector in Canada. First, we apply three approaches presented in the literature to split British Columbias fishing fleets into small- and large-scale sectors. Second, we overlap the results from the three approaches to categorize BCs fisheries into small- and large-scale. Third, we evaluate the socio-economic contribution of small- and large-scale fisheries identified by the three approaches. We show that many of British Columbias fisheries can be classified as small-scale. From these analyses, we also demonstrate that the small-scale sector receives a higher average price per pound of landed catch than the large-scale sector. However, the large-scale sector consumes less fuel per tonne of landed catch than small-scale fisheries, which does not fit with the ...
Conservation of mountain caribou has a long history in British Columbia, beginning at least 70 years ago with efforts to contorl overharvest through stricter hunting regulations. Even the importance of habitat in maintaining healthy caribou populations was ivnestigated more than 40 years ago, and the role of predation was first explored over 20 years ago. Recent conservation efforts have focused on the effects of timber management on mountain caribou and their habitat. Experience in other parts of Canada has show that large-scale timber extraction is not compatible with the persistence of woodland caribou populations. In British Columbia, easily accessible timber in valley bottoms is becoming more scarce and timber harvesting is increasingly moving into the higher elevation habitats frequented by mountain caribou. However, we still have herds of mountain caribou in British Columbia, some even with the potential to increase. This is a direct result of the dedicated efforts of a number of biologists and

October 5, 2010. VANCOUVER, Coast Salish Territories- As part of a national day of action for missing and murdered Indigenous women, community members in Vancouvers Downtown Eastside held an honour ceremony and vigil for Ashley Machisknic. Ashley was a 22- year old Indigenous woman from Saskatchewan, found brutally murdered behind the Downtown Eastside Regent hotel on September 15.. When the demonstration arrived at the police station seven women entered the Vancouver Police Department to demand an answer to a letter they had previously sent to Chief Constable Jim Chu. The letter was a call from the community for a timely and thorough investigation into the death of Ashley Machisknic and other women on the Downtown Eastside whose deaths are being dismissed as suicides and overdoses. Instead of agreeing to a transparent and thorough investigation and giving us appropriate answers, we were padlocked inside and subsequently arrested by over 40 police officers. They used to ignore us when we ...
With oil pollution recognized as a major threat to British Columbias recovering sea otter (Enhydra lutris) population, it is important to distinguish acute from chronic exposures to oil constituent groups in this marine mammal. Concentrations and patterns of alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were determined in blood samples from 29 live-captured sea otters in two coastal areas of British Columbia, as well as in representative samples of their invertebrate prey. Hydrocarbon concentrations in sea otters were similar between areas and among age and sex classes, suggesting that metabolism dominates the fate of these compounds in sea otters. Biomagnification factors derived from PAH ratios in otter:prey supported this notion. Although some higher alkylated three- and four-ring PAHs appeared to biomagnify, the majority of PAHs did not. The apparent retention of alkyl PAHs was reflected in the composition of estimated sea otter body burdens, which provided an alternative way of evaluating

If you are on, or considering going on, ketogenic diet plan for breast cancer ketogenic diet, you are probably already aware that it is a hugely powerful way to cut body fat quickly, easily and safely. You may also have read about its other health benefits, including its ability to stabilize blood glucose levels, making you feel energetic all day long and cutting out sugar cravings, as well as helping prevent or manage type 2 diabetes.. What you may not have heard about yet, is evidence from a recent study that suggests that a ketogenic diet can prevent cancer, and can slow the growth of existing tumors. Research into the impact of a ketogenic diet on cancer is ongoing, however initial experiments performed on mice by leading scientists at the British Columbia Cancer Research Center show that diet has a very significant effect on both the development of cancer cells, and whether cancer develops at all in subjects with a genetic predisposition.. In these experiments, one group of mice was fed ...
Eating a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet may reduce the risk of cancer and slow the growth of tumors already present, according to a new study. The study was conducted by researchers at the British Columbia Cancer Research Centre. They implanted human tumor cells or mouse tumor cells in mice, and then assigned them to one of two diets.. The first diet was a typical Western diet - about 55 percent carbohydrate, 23 percent protein and 22 percent fat. The scientists described the second diet as similar to the South Beach diet, but with more protein. It contained 15 percent carbohydrate, 58 percent protein and 26 percent fat.. The researchers found that among the mice eating a low-carbohydrate, high-protein diet, the tumor cells grew consistently slower, and in some groups, the cancer never developed.. Furthermore, only one of the mice on the Western diet reached a normal lifespan, while 70 percent died from cancer. But only 30 percent of the mice on the low-carbohydrate diet developed cancer, ...
View the guidelines:. BC Major Burn Care Guidelines Vancouver Sun, Mon Feb 20 2012, Page: A4, Section: Westcoast News, By: Mike Hager A team of doctors from Vancouver General Hospitals burn unit have created a set of guidelines aimed at standardizing care for serious burn patients throughout the province. Before our little group got together, there was no unified single message that Vancouver General - as the provincial burn centre - was putting out to other practitioners in the province, said Dr. Mark Vu, an anesthesiologist who helped shape the new protocol. About 100 severe burns (second and third degree) are treated at the VGHs provincial burn centre each year, with about 90 per cent of patients coming from outside the Lower Mainland. Many, like those in last months Burns Lake mill fire, work in natural resource industries in the north.. The guidelines for standardized care will help those in remote areas of the province who treat patients in the critical first 24 hours as they are ...
Many host-parasite relationships exist, and while some have been studied extensively, for others, our understanding of the influences the parasite and host impose on each other is limited. Ectoparasites live in close proximity to their host, often living on the host or within the nest of their host, and so are influenced not only by the individual host they exploit, but by the habitat choices of their host as well. Bird blow flies in the genus Protocalliphora (Diptera: Calliphoridae) are ectoparasites of the altricial young of many species of birds; the nests of tree swallows Tachycineta bicolor in particular are frequently infested by a number of species of Protocalliphora. Through the use of baited traps, experimental manipulation of the nests and nest sites of hosts, and observing the behaviours of adult tree swallows, I studied: (1) host location and host selection strategies of blow flies by testing the importance of nest feathers to blow flies; (2) the influence of the density and ...
The ICMJE is small group of editors of general medical journals who first met informally in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1978 to establish guidelines for the format of manuscripts submitted to their journals. The group became known as the Vancouver Group. Its requirements for manuscripts, including formats for bibliographic references developed by the U.S. National Library of Medicine (NLM), were first published in 1979. The Vancouver Group expanded and evolved into the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE), which meets annually. The ICMJE created the Recommendations for the Conduct, Reporting, Editing, and Publication of Scholarly Work in Medical Journals to help authors and editors create and distribute accurate, clear, easily accessible reports of biomedical studies. An alternate version of ICMJE style is to additionally list the month an issue number, but since most journals use continuous pagination, the shorter form provides sufficient information to locate the ...
Background: The choice to give birth at home with a regulated midwife in attendance became available to expectant women in British Columbia in 1998. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the safety of home birth by comparing perinatal outcomes for planned home births attended by regulated midwives with those for planned hospital births.. Methods: We compared the outcomes of 862 planned home births attended by midwives with those of planned hospital births attended by either midwives (n = 571) or physicians (n = 743). Comparison subjects who were similar in their obstetric risk status were selected from hospitals in which the midwives who were conducting the home births had hospital privileges. Our study population included all home births that occurred between Jan. 1, 1998, and Dec. 31, 1999.. Results: Women who gave birth at home attended by a midwife had fewer procedures during labour compared with women who gave birth in hospital attended by a physician. After adjustment for maternal age, ...

When the British Columbia Liberal government announced their long-awaited Energy Plan in February of 2007, there seemed to be much for renewable energy proponents in the Canadian province to cheer about since it promised to be a significant improvement on the previous Plan, released in 2002.
The use of prescription opioids has increased dramatically in Canada in recent decades. This rise in opioid prescriptions has been accompanied by increasing rates of opioid-related abuse and addiction, creating serious public health challenges in British Columbia (BC), one of Canadas most populated provinces. Our study explores the relationship between dental pain and prescription opioid use among residents in BC. We used data from the 2003 Canadian Community Health Survey (CCHS), which asked respondents about their use of specific analgesic medications, including opioids, and their history of tooth pain in the past month. We used logistic regression, controlling for potential confounding variables, to identify the predictive value of socioeconomic factors, oral health-related variables, and dental care utilization indicators. The Relative Index of Inequality (RII) was calculated to assess the magnitude of socioeconomic inequalities in the use of particular analgesics by incorporating income-derived
SMITHE (Smith, Smyth, Smythe), WILLIAM, farmer and politician; b. 30 June 1842 in Matfen, Northumberland, England; d. 28 March 1887 in Victoria, B.C. In 1865 Smithe was appointed road commissioner for Cowichan, his first public office.. In 1871 his growing reputation as a community leader in the burgeoning farming district around Somenos, the most promising agricultural area on Vancouver Island, won Smithe one of the two seats for Cowichan in the first assembly elected following British Columbias entry into confederation ...
Five cases of severe neutropenia (neutrophil counts | 0.5 per 109 cells/L) associated with exposure to cocaine and levamisole, an antihelimithic agent no longer available in Canada, were identified in Alberta in 2008. Alberta and British Columbia (BC) public health officials issued an advisory and urged health care professionals to report cases to public health. This paper presents the findings of the public health investigations. Cases were identified prospectively through reporting by clinicians and a retrospective review of laboratory and medical examiners data from January 1, 2006 to March 31, 2009. Cases were categorized as confirmed, probable or suspect. Only the confirmed and probable cases are included in this paper. We compare cases of severe neutropenia associated with tainted cocaine (NATC) identified in Alberta and BC between January 1, 2008 to March 31, 2009. Of the 42 NATC cases: 23(55%) were from Alberta; 19(45%) were from British Columbia; 57% of these cases reported crack cocaine use
