Brenner tumors are an uncommon subtype of the surface epithelial-stromal tumor group of ovarian neoplasms. The majority are benign, but some can be malignant. They are most frequently found incidentally on pelvic examination or at laparotomy. Brenner tumours very rarely can occur in other locations, including the testes. On gross pathological examination, they are solid, sharply circumscribed and pale yellow-tan in colour. 90% are unilateral (arising in one ovary, the other is unaffected). The tumours can vary in size from less than 1 centimetre (0.39 in) to 30 centimetres (12 in). Borderline and malignant Brenner tumours are possible but each are rare. Histologically, there are nests of transitional epithelial (urothelial) cells with longitudinal nuclear grooves (coffee bean nuclei) lying in abundant fibrous stroma. Transitional cell carcinoma is an even rarer entity, in which neoplastic transitional epithelial cells similar to transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder are seen in the ovary, ...

N2 - The derivation of ovarian intestinal-type mucinous tumours is not well established. Some are derived from teratomas but the origin of the majority is not clear. It has been recently proposed that the non-germ cell group may be derived from Brenner tumours, as the association of a mucinous tumour with a Brenner tumour is frequently observed. In order to explore the histogenesis of these neoplasms, we undertook a clonality analysis of the two components of ten combined Brenner and mucinous tumours using a human androgen receptor gene (HUMARA) assay. All eight informative cases of ten showed a concordant X-chromosome inactivation pattern between the two tumour components, indicative of a shared ...

Malignant Brenner tumour is a rare disease entity comprising only ,1% of all ovarian neoplasms, hence, individual case reports, small case series, or recently, retrospective population-based studies provide the only accessible information about how to treat these patients. Presenting a case of a 41-year-old, G5P4 who came in due to increasing abdominal girth and a finding of a complex abdominopelvic mass on ultrasound. Ca-125 was only slightly elevated and CEA is within normal limits. Complete surgical resection of the tumour with complete staging was done. The specimen was submitted for histopathology and were found to have features consistent with Brenner tumour along with moderate to severe cytologic atypia which is indicative of malignancy. Upon diagnosis, the patient was immediately started on adjuvant chemotherapy with Carboplatin and Paclitaxel in 3-week dosing for 6 cycles. Surveillance Ca-125 levels were done post-chemotherapy and were found to return to normal levels. The patient has ...

I just listened to Dr Brenners podcast with Natalie Eva Marie where he talked about NR (Nicotinamide Riboside), how it relates to NAD+, and what it may mean for health in humans.. Natalie and her husband are very enthusiastic about NAD+ since they currently take NMN and want to try NAD+ IVs, as several friends have reported great results from it.. But unfortunately, their technical knowledge about the science is somewhat limited, so Dr Brenner had to generalize quite a bit and it wasnt nearly as informative as the recent podcasts with Joe Rogan and Dr Sinclair or Dr Chris Masterjohn with Peter Attia. In the podcast Dr Brenner still claims that only NR can enter cells intact, and that NMN or NAD+ must be metabolized to NR to cross the cellular membrane (14:10).. This is may be true of many types of cells, but seems inaccurate to continue making such blanket statements, as several studies have shown NAD+ does enter into hypothalamus, heart and other tissues intact, and most recently, this study ...

Differential diagnosis of ovarian cystadenofibromas should include stromal ovarian tumors with fibrous component, struma ovarri, ovarian metastases and endometriomas. Ovarian tumors with fibrous parts, including fibroma, fibrothecoma and Brenner tumor often present with a predominantly solid component of low signal intensity on T2-weighted images [7, 11, 12]. Struma ovarri has been described as multilocular ovarian mass, with variable signal intensity of the cystic parts and coexistence of hypointense areas on T2-weighted images, due to the presence of viscous colloid material [15, 16]. Ovarian metastases with a rich fibrous component, usually originating from the gastrointestinal tract often have areas of low signal intensity on T2-weighted images and display strong enhancement after contrast material administration [17 ...
Crystal clear mobile adenocarcinoma is generally proof against platinum-based mostly chemotherapy. A robust association exists amongst ovarian mucinous tumours and appendiceal mucinous neoplasms. For that reason the appendix ought to be removed in individuals with mucinous neoplasms. Repeat laparotomy or peritoneal lavage is required to remove gelatinous product during the persistent recurrences of Pseudomyxoma peritonei . Brenner tumours are cured with surgical resection. Prophylactic oophorectomy at an early age has drastically diminished the chance of coelomic epithelial most cancers. The immune system enables the body to fight off illness - but if it works too little, or too much, this can lead to anything from inflammation, to autoimmunity to cancer. At the Luxembourg Institute of Health (LIH), FNR ATTRACT Fellow Prof Dr Dirk Brenner works on understanding the functionality that underlies a healthy immune system. On a very basic level, the immune system works in two different states: one is the activated state, and one the immune quiescent state, explains Dirk Brenner, who set up the Experimental and Molecular Immunology Group at the LIH in the framework of his FNR ATTRACT Fellowship, which brought him to Luxembourg in 2015, adding: There is a delicate balance between these two states, which is crucial for healthy body function.. ...

This is part four to a four part series. These four parts are excerpts from my book being published this fall. My book is about varying forms of loss + giving them space. Our birth experience is one of my greatest losses and I am learning how to give it space in my life. It is sacred, it is vulnerable, it is hidden. I experience triggers and PTSD. It isnt fun, but I am not going to pretend it is something it isnt: Im not going to pretend like I am okay with how our birth unfolded. Until today, this story has been kept quiet and hidden; its raw. It has been one year since the arrival of my seconborn son. My book is overflowing with vulnerable stories and raw emotion...so I figured sharing this raw story would continue to prepare me for the launch of my book. I write + share to give myself a voice, but also to give others a voice. Loss has a way of making us lonely; I hope to create spaces for connection and community. You are not alone.

My dearest guys and gals!. This letter is to all of you, as you are facing these same trials in your schools.. You are something else, something different, something special. Last week at youth group you shared a bit about how difficult school is. You shared that even your friends do what I would classify as bullying. You are pushed around and harassed for beliefs that you may or may not carry - either way, people assume they know you, they believe the worst, and let you know they think that you are quick to judge, quick to condemn, quick to hate. They have a false picture of who Christ is and they then cast it on you, because you wear the name Christian. And to be fair, we have not done a very good job of representing Christ - but we imperfect humans are working on that. (Well, He is working on that in us.). Those hot topics bring you fear and anxiety: abortion, marijuana, homosexuality.. Your peers throw into your face what they think you believe - you are fully expect to hate, judge, ...

Following the suggestion of Sidney Brenner to document all the cells inCaenorhabditis elegans, Bob Horvitz and John Sulston in 1977 published a map of the worms development, noting also that 111 cells were born only to die shortly thereafter. By 1990 Horvitzs group had identified a small number of genes that controlled the deaths of these cells, when they electrified the community by announcing that the primary killer gene was not only a protease but a known protease.. This discovery burst open the entire subject of apoptosis, leading quickly to recognition of the caspase family of proteases and generating the fervent activity that we now see in research and biotechnical and pharmaceutical efforts to directly or indirectly control the activity of caspases and thereby apoptosis. For this and many subsequent discoveries, Horvitz, Sulston, and Brenner were awarded the 2002 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. ...

AU - Mak, Tak W.. PY - 2010/2/9. Y1 - 2010/2/9. N2 - Metastasis leads to the death of most cancer patients, and basal breast cancer is the most aggressive breast tumor type. Metastasis involves a complex cell migration process dependent on cytoskeletal remodeling such that targeting such remodeling in tumor cells could be clinically beneficial. Here we show that Hormonally Upregulated Neu-associated Kinase (HUNK) is dramatically down-regulated in tumor samples and cell lines derived from basal breast cancers. Reconstitution of HUNK expression in basal breast cancer cell lines blocked actin polymerization and reduced cell ...

BACKGROUND: Breast-cancer-related lymphoedema, either caused by the tumour itself or its therapy, can be found in approximately 24% of all patients. It results in disabilities, psychological distress and reduced quality of life. Therefore, proper therapy for this entity is very important. Guidelines recommend a therapy in two phases, an intensive phase I for 3 weeks for volume reduction and, between the cycles of phase I, a reduced phase II to maintain the result. During phase I therapy, manual lymphatic drainage often cannot be administered on weekends or holidays; only a reduced therapy, mainly by application of a more or less passive compression by bandaging, is administered. For this, conventional low-stretch bandages are hitherto being used. Several attempts have been made to overcome this ...

Theres a insufficient contemporary prospective data examining the ABVD (adriamycin, bleomycin, vinblastine, dacarbazine) and Stanford V (SV; doxorubicin, vinblastine, mechlorethamine, vincristine, bleomycin, etoposide, prednisone) regimens in old Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) individuals. been retrospective analyses which were reported in the 1980sC1990s; these analyses demonstrated 5-year overall success (Operating-system) rates of around 30%C45% (Levis, 1996, Mir, 1993, Roy, 2000, Stark, 2002, Weekes, 2002) A recently available Surveillance, Epidemiology and FINAL RESULTS (SEER) Program record indicated that results for HL in old individuals had improved as time passes (Brenner, 2008). Its important to note, nevertheless, that success rates in the last era (1980C1984) had been remarkably low (~20%), as the 2000C2004 survival rates remained significantly inferior compared with that seen in younger populations. Moreover, a recent retrospective analysis of older HL patients treated in the contemporary ...

The Brenner research lab has four key research interests involving computational and experimental genomics.. Gene regulation by alternative splicing and nonsense-mediated mRNA decay. Nonsense-mediated mRNA decay (NMD) is a cellular RNA surveillance system that recognizes transcripts with premature termination codons and degrades them. Several years ago, we discovered large numbers of natural alternative splice forms that appear to be targets for NMD, and we speculated that this might be a mode of gene regulation which we termed rust (regulated unproductive splicing and translation). This seems to be confirmed by our finding that all conserved members of the SR family of splice regulators have an unproductive alternative mRNA isoform targeted for NMD1. Strikingly, the splice pattern for each is conserved in mouse and always associated with an ultraconserved or highly-conserved region of ~100 or more nucleotides of perfect identity between human and mouse. Remarkably, this seems to have evolved ...
