Report written by Charley Hesse.. This trip was the 4th annual Audubon Shop Namibia/Botswana custom tour. The tried and tested itinerary remained unchanged from previous years although we did get to stay at some great new accommodations for the first time. From Windhoek we dropped off the escarpment and crossed the Namib Desert, experiencing an ever-changing landscape and finding the rare Hartmanns Mountain Zebra. In the Walvis Bay area we found the Namibian endemic Dune Lark and saw extraordinary numbers of both flamingos on the coast. The famous inselberg of Spitzkoppe produced the rare Herero Chat against a stunning backdrop and clients were charmed by the incredible location of the Erongo Wilderness Lodge with all its interesting specialties, including the charismatic Rockrunner. Etosha National Park never disappoints and this year we had great action with many lions and elephants around waterholes during the day, and with the drought, especially large numbers of Black Rhinos at night. We ...

ABSTRACT. The study reports supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) of pesticides in sediment samples from the Okavango Delta, the headwaters of which originate from Angola and traverse through Namibia into Botswana. An acetone modifier and fractional extraction by pressure ramping gave recoveries ranging from 55 to 86% for the 15 pesticides studied. Hexachlorobenzene (HCB), aldrin and 4, 4-dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (4, 4-DDT) were identified at concentration ranges of 1.1 to 30.3, 0.5 to 15.2 and 1.4 to 55.4 µg/g, respectively by gas chromatography with electron capture detection (GC-ECD) and were unequivocally confirmed by gas chromatography time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-ToF-MS). The study indicated an increase of pesticide concentrations in the direction of water flow from the Panhandle (point of entry) to the lower delta. The results show that there are ramifications associated with activities either upstream or downstream; hence close monitoring is required for the long-term ...
The recent increase in the creation of trans-boundary protected areas and wildlife corridors between them lend importance to information on pathogen prevalence and transmission among wildlife species that will become connected. One such initiative is the Kavango Zambezi Transfrontier Conservation Area (KAZA/TFCA) of which Botswanas Okavango Delta constitute a major contribution in terms of wildlife and ecosystems. Between 2008 and 2011, we collected serum samples from 14 lions (Panthera leo), four leopards (P. pardus), 19 spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta), and six cheetahs (Acinonyx jubatus) in the Okavango. Samples were tested for antibodies against: canine distemper virus (CDV), feline panleukopenia virus, enteric coronavirus, feline calicivirus, feline herpesvirus (FHV-1), and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV). Evidence of exposure to all of these pathogens was found to varying degrees in at least one of the species sampled. High seroprevalence (, 90%) was only found for FHV-1 and FIV in ...

I his is truly a matter of public interest in that so many Zimbabweans and the world at large know that returning these people to the Zimbabwe government is like sending them to hell. The present Zimbabwe government under Emerson Mnangagwa is worse than that of predecessor the Zanu government under the now late dictator Robert Mugabe. We really, wonder where UNHCR Botswana gets its information if they do not see that sending these refugees to Zimbabwe is a mere violation of the Geneva Convention of 19S1. We are aware that in deciding refugee status each case is looked at on its own merit. However, this case is unique in that these refugees comprise of former army personnel who deserted the Zimbabwean Army who on return will be Court Marshalled. They deserted because they did not want to carry out illegal orders of beating up, torturing, and sometimes even shooting innocent civilians. They refused such orders and so fled for their lives after they had been put on the wanted list by the human ...

The Kalahari Copper Belt (KCB) is a 1,000 kilometer long NE-SW trending belt of sediment-hosted, stratiform Cu-Ag deposits hosted in Meso- and Neoproterozoic rocks. The KCB extends from northern Botswana into Namibia along the NW edge of the Kalahari Craton, and consists of folded and greenschist metamorphosed Ghanzi (Botswana) and Tsumis (Namibia) Group metasedimentary rocks.. The KCBs Cu-Ag deposits occur in chemically reduced shales and siltstones that overlie oxidized sandstones. This regional interface, which is both a permeability barrier and redox boundary, played a critical role in the formation of the Cu-Ag deposits, and represents a geologic setting similar to that of the Central African Copper Belt and Kupferschiefer in Poland.. Cupric has an extensive package of licenses with in-place mining infrastructure, JORC compliant resources and numerous additional high-grade Cu-Ag exploration targets in the KCB of Botswana. Since the acquisition of Khoemacau in 2013, Cupric has drilled out ...
Background: International donors support the partnership between the Government of Botswana and two international organisations: U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Africa Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnership to implement Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision with the target of circumcising 80 % of HIV negative men in 5 years. Botswana Government had started integration of the program into its health system when international partners brought in the Models for Optimizing Volume and Efficiency to strengthen delivery of the service and push the target. The objective of this paper is to use a systems model to establish how the functioning of the partnership on Safe Male Circumcision in Botswana contributed to the outcome.. Methods: Data were collected using observations, focus group discussions and interviews. Thirty participants representing all three partners were observed in a 3-day meeting; followed by three rounds of in-depth interviews with five selected leading officers over 2 ...
They tell me that the United Kingdom has banned me from entering the country and that I cant even so much as have a connecting flight in London, Anderson explains in the video. So not only am I banned from the UK, but I cant even go to the London airport. He states that he had to re-route his entire journey to get to Botswana where he hopes to spread his message of hate. Im still excited about what were doing in Botswana, he said. Its too bad that South Africa fell through because, you know, they banned me personally, they banned the soul winning event. He then slammed the country by saying, I wasnt really that excited about visiting their so-called beautiful country which is the rape capital of the world. He states its one of the most dangerous and wicked places in the entire world before saying all he was trying to do was bring the gospel to the lost. He finished his video by telling Christians of South Africa to save themselves and praised Botswana for being more receptive ...

Background Post abortion complications are the third leading cause of maternal death after hemorrhage and hypertension in Botswana where abortion is not legalized. This study aimed at assessing the management of post abortion complications in Botswana. Methods A retrospective study was conducted at four hospitals in Botswana in 2014. Socio-demographic, patient management and outcomes data were extracted from patients medical records. Descriptive statistics and chi-square test were used to analyze and present the data. Result A total of 619 patients medical records were reviewed. The duration of hospital stay prior to uterine evacuation ranged from less than an hour to 480 hours. All the patients received either prophylactic or therapeutic antibiotics. Use of parenteral antibiotics was significantly associated with severity of abortion, second trimester abortion, use of blood products and the interval between managements decision and uterine evacuation. Uterine evacuation for retained products ...

Devils Claw is a geophyte, i.e. an herbaceous perennial that stores water and nutrients in underground tubers in order to survive harsh climatic conditions. There are two species of Devilss Claw Harpagophytum procumbens and Harpagophytum zeyheri - which thrive in the deep sandy soils of the Kalahari where there is low rainfall (less than 500mm per year). H. procumbens is found in Namibia, Botswana and South Africa, while H. zeyheri occurs in these countries as well as in Angola, Zambia, Zimbabwe and Mozambique.. Both species grow a primary underground tuber from which are formed a number of fleshy secondary tubers that can reach up to 40cm in length. Above ground, the stems emerge after the first rains and can reach up to 2m in length. They die back in winter or during droughts. The leaves are blue-green and the flowers, which open for only one day and are pollinated by bees, are a deep mauve-pink with a yellow and white throat. Devils Claw belongs to the Pedaliaceae botanical family and is ...

The August 2008 outbreak of cholera in Zimbabwe rapidly spread to the neighbouring countries of Mozambique, South Africa and Botswana and later also affected Angola, Malawi, Namibia, Swaziland, Zambia and the DRC. The situation was aggravated by the influx of illegal immigrants into South Africa, coupled with inadequate water and sanitation facilities and poor hygiene at temporary processing centres for asylum seekers (UNICEF, 2009). Equally concerning is that some countries which had previously been free of the disease, such as Botswana and Namibia, have also started reporting cases (see Table 1).. Results of qualitative participatory engagement. Although much is known about the medical and biological dimensions of cholera in the SADC region, the social, political, and cultural dimensions of cholera outbreaks are less well documented. Given this reality, a multi-stakeholder workshop and other methods of participatory engagement were pursued to solicit inputs on these dimensions. A number of key ...
In the past, Khama said, the wrangling was along the northern border of the Zambezi region where there are a lot of wetlands.. But it was never really clear to either party where the border of the flat plains of the river is. So thats why this reaffirmation hopes to remove any doubt and mark the border so that people who commonly operate in those areas -be it members of the security forces or the general population - will know where the border lies. So that is now something of the past and I think its a positive step in the right direction, Khama said.. Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of International Relations and Cooperation, Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, on Tuesday said the significance of the treaty is that boundaries are now clearly marked to avoid any contravention.. The issue of the shooting at the border has been resolved. The two ministers of international relations have engaged and that is why you have not heard of any incident. But if everyone knows that this is where the border ...

Today it is a dry and dusty land with scattered salt pans, and it is hard to believe that modern humans lived and thrived in wetlands here for 70,000 years before our ancestors began to explore the rest of Africa, and ultimately the world.. We pinpointed this region by studying mitochondrial DNA, known as the mitogenome. Unlike nuclear DNA, which is passed on by both mother and father, mitochondrial DNA is passed on only by the mother, which means it is not jumbled up in each generation.. If we think of all modern humans as occupying a particular place on a huge family tree, logically we should find the most diverse mitogenomes at the very base of the tree, because it is the ultimate source of all the various branches.. We already know that genetic data points to southern Africa as the cradle of humanity (unlike fossil evidence, most of which has been found in East Africa). But we wanted to refine our search still further, to pinpoint the exact location where humans first evolved.. To do this, ...
Migrations of most animal taxa are declining as a result of anthropogenic pressures and land-use transformation. Here, we document and characterize a previously unknown multi-country migration of Burchells zebra Equus quagga that is the longest of all recorded large mammal migrations in Africa. Our data from eight adult female zebras collared on the border of Namibia and Botswana show that in December 2012 all individuals crossed the Chobe River and moved due south to Nxai Pan National Park in Botswana, where they spent a mean duration of 10 weeks before returning, less directly, to their dry season floodplain habitat. The same southward movements were also observed in December 2013. Nxai Pan appeared to have similar environmental conditions to several possible alternative wet season destinations that were closer to the dry season habitat on the Chobe River, and water availability, but not habitat or vegetation biomass, was associated with higher-use areas along the migratory pathway. These ...
How can documentary films, such as Soul of the Elephant, be used as instruments of change? This was the topic of discussion that filmmakers, Derek and Beverly Joubert, addressed during their discussion panel at the Sundance Film Festival held in January. As honorary Botswana citizens and National Geographic Explorers-in-residence, they have spent decades using the medium of filmmaking and photography as a podium to speak about conservation. With the escalating level of emergency, they have focused on Africas elephants and rhinos (every 9 hours a rhino is killed in South Africa and 45 elephants across Africa Source: Great Plains Foundation). Their safari company, Great Plains Conservation, in partnership with fellow safari company &Beyond and Africa Foundation, have translocated nearly 100 rhinos through Rhinos Without Borders into the safekeeping of Botswana from South Africa where tumultuous poaching and corruption have resulted in a massacre of rhinos in recent years. All through the month of ...
When: Monday February 5, 2007, 7:00 p.m.. Contact: African Peoples Solidarity Committee, Rob Notowitz, 857-233-7504. On February 5th, human rights activists will hold a demonstration at the New York City Hilton Hotel where the 4th Annual Rapaport International Diamond Conference will take place. The diamond is on the defensive.. Organizers of the planned protest reject the diamond industrys recent publicity campaign promoting the extraction and sale of non-conflict diamonds as beneficial to indigenous and African communities.. Critics of the industry point to Botswana, the largest supplier of uncut diamonds in the world, where a fourth of the population lives on less than a dollar a day. A third of the people of are undernourished and the life expectancy is 36 years. Botswana has the second largest per capita AIDS rate on the planet, with nearly a quarter of the people infected. Similar conditions persist throughout the diamond-producing regions of the world.. The World Diamond Council ...

Partnerships, networks and collaboration between grassroots organizations are a key to accomplishing this. The diverse group of partners invited by Camphill Community Trust Botswana to join this presentation provide a real-life model for what this kind of collaboration and networking can look like. ...
Feminization of poverty in caregiving can be mitigated or reduced by incentivizing caregivers either with money or food items in order to raise their working morale; or remove stress and distress from lack of food to the caregiver. Money to settle challenges such as transport is critical (UNAIDS, 2000). Programmes and plans must be put in place to streamline different forms of incentives. The Government, complemented by civil society bodies and donors should take the challenge of initiating financial and material incentives to the caregivers (Kangethe, 2011b). This researcher would recommend that the government of Botswana borrows a leaf from the Mozambique government which has a policy to give its caregiver volunteers 60% of the minimum wage rate in the country. This would to some extent cushions the poverty and reduces feminization of the caregivers (http//www.irinews.org./AIDsreport, 2005). Although Botswana government has a policy to offer food to its people living with HIV/AIDS, there is ...

Resistance of nine cabbage (Brassica oleracea var. capitata) cultivars, Big cropper, Cape Spitz, Copenhagen Market, Conquistador, Drumhead, Giant Drumhead, Glory of Enkhuizen, Grandslam and Hercules to cabbage aphid (Brevicoryne brassicae) was studied in greenhouse experiments conducted at the Botswana College of Agriculture, Gaborone, Botswana. Cabbage aphids caused 85 % leaf damage on the most susceptible cultivar, Drumhead, and only 30.9 and 44.6 % on the more resistant cultivars, Grandslam and Copenhagen Market, respectively. Drumhead had the lowest number of aphids per leaf, showing the antibiosis mechanism of resistance to B. brassicae and yet it suffered the most severe damage. Although Copenhagen Market was resistant to cabbage aphid damage, it had the greatest abundance of aphids per leaf, showing that it used the tolerance resistance mechanism against cabbage aphids. Conquistador, Glory of Enkhuizen, Grandslam and Hercules, which gave the lowest combined effect of number of aphids multiplied
Roland Routh. Windhoek-The Supreme Court this week dismissed an appeal by the finance ministry, and its customs and excise department, to set aside the High Court order that the Treasury ought to compensate a Botswana company for losses incurred after an impounded cargo of cigarrettes of the company went bad while in government custody.. The ruling essentially found that the finance ministry and customs and excise officials overstepped their boundares in the matter and should not have held on to to the consignment of cigarrettes after the company had paid its dues. As a result the Supreme Court found that the finance ministry must compensate the Botswana company for the loss of nearly N$1.2 million.. The matter stems from the case in which the Botswana company, Benson Craig, took the ministry and the customs and excise commissioner to court after customs officials impounded a consignment of 579 boxes of cigarettes destined for a duty-free concern in Oshikango.. The cigarettes were sent on ...
San (also called Bushmen) are an ethnic group of South West Africa. They live in the Kalahari Desert across the borders of Botswana, Namibia, Angola and South Africa. Most of the 100,000 San people live in Botswana (around 55,000) but about 25,000 live in Namibia..The San have a foraging lifestyle based on the hunting of wild animals (usually with bows and poison arrows and spears) and the gathering of veld food. The fact they are hunter gatherers accounts for their nomadic way of life. Their lifestyle is particularly adapted to the hard conditions of the Kalahari Desert. They know where waterholes are located and carry water in ostrich eggshells. They drink water from roots and tubers they find by digging the ground. The San are intelligent trackers and know the habits of their prey. they hunt game of all size : mice, buffalos, antelopes, and even giraffes sometimes. They also eat various types of insects especially during the dry season.. Sans are part of the Khoisan language peoples (including the

We conducted a pilot study of self-collection and highrisk HPV testing for cervical screening, from which data on HPV ...
Established in 1888, De Beers Group is the worlds leading diamond company, with expertise in the exploration, mining and marketing of diamonds. Together with its joint venture partners, De Beers Group employs more than 20,000 people across the diamond pipeline and is the worlds largest diamond producer by value, with mining operations in Botswana, Canada, Namibia and South Africa. We learned from Sally Morrison, who is Director of PR - Natural Diamonds for De Beers Group, that a natural diamonds value is measured by its rarity, and since there is only a finite number of natural diamonds in the world, we would expect diamond prices and diamond values to go up over time. According to Ms. Morrison, De Beers has a deep and long history of understanding consumer attitudes towards diamonds and the emotional connection people have with them. We also learned from Ms. Morrison, that De Beers Group is in partnership with the government of Botswana and has a 50/50 joint venture to mine the diamonds, ...
In 2013 our African wildlife photographic safari began at the end of July & ended in the middle of December. We travelled against the clock this time going from the Johannesburg to the Kruger National Park. We had to return to Johannesburg for repair of our dual battery charging system & this allowed us to return for another 2 weeks to the Shingwedzi area which was very beautiful as the floods had scoured the river banks clean & dumped vast amounts of sand along the banks allowing superb viewing of the game. We then went onto Mapungubwe National park before crossing into Botswana, travelling North east to the Pandamatenga border entrance of Hwange National Park in Zimbabwe. We returned to Botswana to visit Chobe but were very disappointed that we could not get camping in Savuti. We thus crossed over to the Caprivi Strip in Namibia staying at Kalizo Lodge for bird photography, & the Namwba & Mahangu game reserves for a number of days. We then went to Etosha National Park for 5 weeks before ending the

I am in Luanda, Angola right now, and what an interesting place. It is the most expensive city in the world: a can of coke costs $5, a car and driver for the day costs between $250-$300, and a basic hotel room with a view of people living in shacks below and cranes building more skyscrapers above is $380 (and it is difficult to find it for less).Luanda feels like Africa mixed with Latin American and European energy and music. The traffic is bumper to bumper. It is not possible to have more than two meetings in a day because it takes that long to get from one area to another in the city. ...
Dolutegravir is a widely used anti-HIV drug in the integrase inhibitor class. It is marketed as Tivicay and is a component in the combination pills Triumeq and Juluca. This week, regulatory agencies warned that women with HIV who can become pregnant should not use dolutegravir without effective contraception. This follows a report from Botswana of a higher frequency of birth defects in babies born to mothers who became pregnant while taking dolutegravir. The Botswana study looked at the incidence of neural tube defects in infants born to mothers taking anti-HIV drugs at the time they became pregnant. A neural tube defect occurs when the spinal cord, brain, and related structures do not form properly. Spina bifida - a malformed spinal cord - is the most common neural tube defect.. The study found that four of 426 (0.9%) babies whose mothers became pregnant while taking dolutegravir had a neural tube defect, compared to 0.1% in babies whose mothers were taking other anti-HIV drugs.. Neural tube ...
During your travels you may encounter all types of insects, some of which are harmless while others can carry disease. Mosquitoes, ticks, bees, wasps, hornets, blackflies, spiders, and ants may be mild annoyances, but one small bite can have serious implications on your health.. Practicing meticulous and consistent insect bite avoidance is one of the most important things travellers can do to prevent illness and spreading infectious diseases. Of the common arthropod-borne diseases encountered by travellers, only Malaria and Japanese Encephalitis can be prevented by medication and a vaccine, respectively. ...
Humans have always been fascinated by lions. In our minds they are brave and free and represent a nobility of spirit we crave.. In the 1960s George and Joy Adamsons friendship with Elsa the lioness became a Global phenomenon, and more recently the story of the two young men who bought a lion cub called Christian in Harrods, raised it and then returned it to the wild , captured the imagination of television audiences world-wide. Both cases supported the idea that lions are individuals capable of forming close relationships with humans. When we became aware of Val and Sirgas story we knew it was a once in a lifetime opportunity, because it took the trust between lion and man to a completely different level. Not only had an amazing bond developed between Val Gruener and the cub he had rescued and raised, but this man and this lioness were walking and learning to hunt together alone and unarmed in a wild and remote part of the Kalahari Desert of Botswana.. The irony is that this friendship exists ...
New research at a rock shelter on the edge of the Kalahari desert in South Africa challenges the assumption that modern human origins and complex behaviors were limited to coastal environments. A collection of unusual artifacts that are over 100,000 years old suggests that inland Homo sapiens they were as innovative as their coastal cousins. There is a widespread belief that the origins of modern humans and modern human cognition can be located in southern Africa. Since many of the archaeological sites linked to early human activity are located on the coast, experts assumed that Homo sapiens its technological and symbolic behavior in that region also evolved. But a new study published in the journal Nature paints a very different picture. One of the stone tools excavated from Ga-Mohana Hill North Rockshelter. (Credit: Jayne Wilkins) ...

Tiri Masawi. Windhoek - The United Nations Central Emergency Response Fund (CERF), through the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), has releases N$10 million (approximately US$714 000) to avert the effects of a devastating drought on Namibian farmers over a six-month period.. Other partners to the project include the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry and two farmers unions - the Namibia National Farmers Union (NNFU) and Namibia Commercial Farmers Union (NECFU).. Namibia is currently experiencing the worst drought in 60 years which has also ravaged crops in neigbouring Botswana, South Africa, Zambia and Zimbabwe.. FAO Namibia country representative, Farai Zimudzi, said the project aims to reach 3,250 households (approximately 14,300 people) affected by drought that devastated the country during the 2018/2019 agricultural season.. She added that the initial project was formulated late December 2019, targeting five regions - Ohangwena, Omusati, Kunene, Hardap and Omaheke and was ...
Expansion of ecotourism-based industries, changes in land-use practices, and escalating competition for resources have increased contact between free-ranging wildlife and humans. Although human presence in wildlife areas may provide an important economic benefit through ecotourism, exposure to human pathogens may represent a health risk for wildlife. This report is the first to document introduction of a primary human pathogen into free-ranging wildlife. We describe outbreaks of Mycobacterium tuberculosis, a human pathogen, in free-ranging banded mongooses (Mungos mungo) in Botswana and suricates (Suricata suricatta) in South Africa. Wildlife managers and scientists must address the potential threat that humans pose to the health of free-ranging wildlife.
Institution: Cardiff University. Lead supervisor: Professor Michael Bruford. Project Description Wetlands are one of the most threatened ecosystems in Southern Africa, having suffered recent severe loses due to human landscape modification. Here we propose to study wetland connectivity using a phylogeographic approach with the Blacksmith lapwing, an endemic wetland bird to Southern Africa. We will analyse two gene sequences (ND2 and Cyt B) for populations sampled in Zimbabwe, South Africa, Mozambique and Botswana. To achieve this objective, a student will be trained in the molecular and statistical methods required by a current GW4+ student supervisor, Josephine Jackson. The undergraduate student will share lab and office space, enabling them to benefit from experiencing work in a molecular ecology lab where a wide variety of research questions including conservation, behaviour, food security, climate change and evolutionary processes are studied. General consumables and lab facilities are ...
World AIDS day on December 1st is marked this year by UNAIDS, the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, with the theme Getting to Zero - Zero new HIV infections. Zero discrimination. Zero AIDS-related deaths.. The latest estimates conducted by UNAIDS, show that there are 700,000 fewer new HIV infections across the world in 2011 compared to 2001. Although the numbers are still high - 2.5 million new HIV infections detected in 2011 - this shows a dramatic decrease, some by as much as 50%, in low and middle income sub-Saharan African countries like Malawi, Botswana and Namibia. The overall number detected as living with HIV/AIDS remains stubbornly high at 34 million people.. The scaling up of antiretroviral therapy in low- and middle-income countries has transformed national HIV/AIDS responses and has contributed to an overall reduction in global AIDS related deaths by 24% in the last 6 years alone.. In Ireland the number of new HIV infections reflects the global trend of declining numbers, ...

This is the first analysis known to the authors that attempts to explore patterns and associations of bisexual partnerships and of bisexual concurrency among MSM in Malawi, Namibia and Botswana. The majority of MSM sampled were sexually active with both men and women, about a third of MSM were married to women, and about one in six was in a stable sexual relationship with a man and a woman. Encouragingly, bisexual men and men in concurrent bisexual partnerships reported significantly higher rates of condom usage with regular and casual sexual partners, and reported lower sexual risk practices than men who reported only having sex with men. Since not using condoms with men was one of only two independent risks for HIV infection identified in this study, the finding that married men and men in concurrent relationships were more likely to use condoms with both male and female is encouraging. Nevertheless, we found overall rates of HIV infection in all three samples to be roughly twice as high as ...
Here, we have demonstrated that the derived rs1426654*A in SLC24A5 in the KhoeSan has a common origin with Europeans, reflected by the similar tMRCA estimates and identical modal haplotypes. This is consistent with the extended haplotype similarity observed between San from Botswana and Europeans (17). We asked whether the common origin of rs1426654*A haplotype could be due to recent migration between Europe and South Africa, or via an indirect route of migration through eastern Africa. A pastoralist migration from eastern Africa to southern Africa 2 kya is well documented from human genetic and archaeological data, and is likely associated with the introduction of domestic sheep and goats into the region. The summary statistics in our demographically explicit ABC approach clearly discriminate between the East African Source and European Source models, and strongly favor the East African Source model (Materials and Methods and SI Appendix, Supplementary Text). We cannot speculate as to the ...
The Preparatory Commission for the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty Organization (CTBTO PrepCom) organized a workshop on CTBTO International Cooperation and National Implementation for States from East and Southern Africa in Nairobi, Kenya, from 18 to 20 June 2002. Forty-four participants from twenty States, including four non-signatory States (Botswana, Eritrea, Mauritius and Tanzania), and a representative of the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace and Disarmament in Africa attended the workshop. The workshop focused on an overview of the work of the Commission in building-up the verification system as well as CTBT verification technologies and the potential benefits of their application for scientific and civil purposes. Convened as a follow-up to the initiatives presented during the African International Cooperation Workshop, convened in Cairo, Egypt from 1 to 3 June 1999, the Nairobi workshop examined ways and means to promote regional cooperation. The workshop also facilitated ...
In 1989, a worldwide ban on ivory trade was approved by CITES. Levels of poaching fell dramatically, and black market prices of ivory slumped. CITES had saved the African Elephant. Or had it? Since 1997, there have been sustained attempts by certain countries to weaken the ban. In 1999, Botswana, Namibia and Zimbabwe were allowed…

In country after country in Sub-Saharan Africa, new discoveries of oil, natural gas and mineral deposits have been making headlines every other week it seems. When Ghanas Jubilee oil field hits peak production in 2013, it will produce 120,000 barrels a day. Ugandas Lake Albert Rift Basin fields could potentially produce even greater quantities. Billions of dollars a year could flow into Mozambique and Tanzania thanks to natural gas findings. And in Sierra Leone, mining iron ore in Tonkolili could boost GDP by a remarkable 25 percent in 2012.. My strong hope is that all the people living in these resource-rich African countries also get to share in this new oil and mineral wealth. So far, with one of few exceptions being Botswana, natural resources havent always improved the lives of people and their families. From what I see on my constant travels to the continent, economic growth in most resource-rich countries is not automatically translating into better health, education, and other key ...
April 16, 2019. The Panel updated the text and references of the May 22, 2018 Pediatric Guidelines to include new data and publications. Key updates are summarized below.. Safety Concerns About the Use of Dolutegravir at the Time of Conception and During Pregnancy. Data from a National Institutes of Health-funded, observational surveillance study of birth outcomes among pregnant women on antiretroviral therapy (ART) in Botswana suggest that there is a possible increased risk of neural tube defects in infants born to women who were receiving dolutegravir at the time of conception. Further data collection is ongoing, and additional analyses will be required to confirm this potential safety signal. Before patients become sexually active, pediatric and adolescent providers should discuss the potential risk of neural tube defects with patients who are receiving or initiating dolutegravir and their caregivers. The sections listed below provide links to additional information and specific ...

The various dialects and social groups of the Taa, their many names, the unreliability of transcriptions found in the literature, and the fact that names may be shared between languages and that dialects have been classified, has resulted in a great deal of confusion. Traill (1974), for example, spent two chapters of his Compleat Guide to the Koon [sic] disentangling names and dialects.[10]. The name ǃXoon (more precisely ǃXóõ) is only used at Aminius Reserve in Namibia, around Lone Tree where Traill primarily worked, and at Dzutshwa (Botswana). It is, however, used by the ǃXoon for all Taa speakers. It has been variously spelled ǃxō, ǃkɔ̃ː, ǃko/ǃkõ, Khong, and the fully anglicized Koon. Bleeks Nǀuǁʼen dialect[11] has been spelled ǀNuǁen, ǀNuǁe꞉n, Ngǀuǁen, Nguen, Nǀhuǁéi, ŋǀuǁẽin, ŋǀuǁẽi, ŋǀuǁen, ǀuǁen. It has also been called by the ambiguous Khoekhoe term Nǀusan (Nǀu-san, Nǀūsā, Nǀuusaa, Nǀhusi), sometimes rendered Nusan or Noosan, which has ...
