Year of Establishment : 1913. History of the department : Teaching in Botany began in the University of Calcutta in the year1913 under the headship of Dr. C. C. Calder, the then superintendent of Royal Botanical Garden. Prior to that in the year 1912, Sir Taraknath Palit donated a large part of his property for the foundation of University College of Science and Technology, presently named as Tarak Nath Palit Shiksha Prangan. That was the beginning of science teaching in Calcutta University, and then in 1913, Sir Rasbehari Ghosh donated a large sum of money for the creation of four chair professor posts, one each in Physics, Applied Mathematics, Chemistry and Botany. Prof. S P Agharakar was appointed as the first Ghosh Professor in Botany. Alvar Palmgren (28 April 1880 - 30 November 1960) was a Finnish botanist and plant ecologist. Palmgren studied botany at the University of Helsinki under professor J.P. Norrlin. He graduated (Fil.kand.) in 1906 and obtained his Ph.D. in 1914. He became docent of botany at the University of Helsinki 1916 and professor of botany at the same university in 1928 (from 1938, the first in the special Swedish-language chair of botany). He retired in 1950. Palmgren worked as a systematic botanist with microspecies of Taraxacum, Hieracium and other genera. As an ecologist, he worked of the nature of plant communities. He supported the ideas of Henry Gleason on the individualistic behaviour of species in community assembly already from the 1920s. Palmgren wrote early accounts on the role of isolation and stochastic events in the distribution of species, while his contemporary biology was largely deterministic. A phylogenetic study of the wild and domesticated pumpkins and squashes (Cucurbita, Cucurbitaceae) based on microfluidic PCR and next generation sequencing of 48 nuclear loci.. Phylogenetics can aid the study of plant domestication by resolving sister relationships between crops and their wild relatives, thereby identifying the ancestors of cultivated plants. Our preliminary phylogenetic study of Cucurbita (pumpkins and squashes) using five nuclear loci did not find strong support for some of the currently held domestication hypotheses and ecological divisions in the genus, demonstrating the need for increased genetic sampling. An updated phylogenetic study of Cucurbita using 48 loci derived from introns of single-copy nuclear genes provides new insight into relationships between wild and domesticated species and into the evolution of the two ecologically distinct types of Cucurbita. Background and Aims. The TERMINAL FLOWER 1 (TFL1) gene is pivotal in the control of inflorescence architecture in arabidopsis. Thus, tfl1 mutants flower early and have a very short inflorescence phase, while TFL1-overexpressing plants have extended vegetative and inflorescence phases, producing many coflorescences. TFL1 is expressed in the shoot meristems, never in the flowers. In the inflorescence apex, TFL1 keeps the floral genes LEAFY (LFY) and APETALA1 (AP1) restricted to the flower, while LFY and AP1 restrict TFL1 to the inflorescence meristem. In spite of the central role of TFL1 in inflorescence architecture, regulation of its expression is poorly understood. Shifts between radially symmetrical flowers and bilaterally symmetrical (zygomorphic) flowers occur many times independently in the diversification of flowering plants. Evidence from across angiosperms indicates that CYCLOIDEA-like (CYC) genes, which belong to the TCP gene family, play an important role in dorsal specific identity in bilaterally symmetrical flowers. In the core eudicots, two duplications have led to three clades of CYC-like genes: CYC1, CYC2 and CYC3. We focus on the evolution of CYC-like genes in the Campanulaceae, which is a large and world-wide eudicot group, with multiple symmetrical floral forms. Viviparity (from the Latin vivus (living) and parere (to beget), literally giving live birth), both in zoology and in botany refers to certain classes of modes of reproduction, though it has different meanings in the two contexts. The adjective viviparous is derived from viviparity and describes both the various modes of reproduction and the organisms that reproduce in any such mode. In zoology viviparity refers to development of the embryo inside the body of the parent, eventually leading to live birth, as opposed to reproduction by laying eggs that complete their incubation outside the parental body. The pre-Columbian indigenous group, Hohokam, used rock-piles to cultivate agaves in Arizona. Rock-piles acted as mulch to retain soil moisture and catch rainfall runoff at hill slopes. These rock-piles were the main approach for cultivating drought tolerant agaves. Agave murpheyi and Agave americana are among the agaves in the region cultivated by the Hohokam. Hohokam Agave, or Agave murpheyi, has been reported as endemic at archaeologic sites in Arizona. In addition, Agave americana remnants have been reported at Hohokam rock-pile fields. Chitinases play a role in the development and physiology of plants and in stress responses. The model object of this project is a carnivorous plant, Drosera rotundifolia L., from which the gene for chitinase (DrChit) involved in digestive processes of prey was isolated. As chitinous cell wall of fungal pathogens is also degraded by chitinases that are expressed during the plant defense, the DrChit has a potential use in biotechnology aimed at the plant resistance reinforcement. Here we focus on the isolation and purification of DrChit protein, its biochemical characterization and antifungal potential determination. Next, we will isolate and characterize the other genes with the carnivorous expression profile. To clarify the role of chitinases in defense, the chitinase expression profiles in embryogenic cultures of conifers exposed to abiotic stress will be evaluated as well. The intention of this review is to discuss floral initiation of horticultural trees. Floral initiation is best understood for herbaceous species, especially at the molecular level, so a brief overview of the control of floral initiation of Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana (L.) Heynh.) precedes the discussion of trees. Four major pathways to flowering have been characterized in Arabidopsis, including environmental induction through photoperiod and temperature, autonomous floral initiation, and regulation by gibberellins. Tropical trees are generally induced to flower through environmental cues, whereas floral initiation of temperate deciduous trees is often autonomous. In the tropical evergreen tree mango, Mangifera indica L., cool temperature is the only factor known to induce flowering, but does not ensure floral initiation will occur because there are important interactions with vegetative growth. More sets of chromosomes usually equates to more DNA. Since 1967, weve known how many chromosomes are found in the cells of most of the New Zealand hebes, but we havent known how much DNA they hold. The amount of DNA that all sets of chromosomes contain is called genome size. Prior to this study, the genome sizes of 40 species of Veronica were known, but only one of those was from the Southern Hemisphere.. For the new study, we measured genome size in 174 individuals representing 102 species, including 54 species from New Zealand and Australia. We now know that all hebes and speedwells have relatively small genome sizes (0.26-3.19 picograms) compared to other plants and animals, roughly comparable to that of rice in this figure.. MS medium supplemented with different combinations and concentrations of hormone were studied to obtain a suitable protocol of plantlet regeneration of ginger from calli. Three explants of two varieties of ginger viz., Suruchi and BARI ada-1 were cultured on MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/l Dicamba, 0.75 mg/l Dicamba and 1 mg/l 2,4 D. Assessments on callus induction were studied through five quantitative traits such as days required for callus initiation, size of callus, color of callus, nature of callus and percentage of callus induction. Suruchi showed 62.64% callus induction, 63.98% shoot induction and 68.76% root induction. Leaf explant gave best result over shoot tip and root explant. Leaf explant produced 67.07% callus, 67.77% shoot and 66.93% root. MS medium supplemented with 0.5 mg/l Dicamba was the best (70.20%) for callusing, MS + 1.0 mg/l Kn + 1.0 mg/l BAP best (72.03%) for shooting and Ms + 1 mg/l IBA gave best (66.43%) result for rooting over other treatments. Dormant buds of mango (mangifera indica L. cv. Langra ) exposed to acute gamma-irradiation dosages of 1.0, 2.0, 3.0,4.0, 5.0 and 6.0 kiloroentgens (KR), were grafted on to one-year-old seedling stock. Dosages of 2.0 and 3.0 KR were found satisfactory for the purpose , as measued by bud lethality and scion growth. A bud graft from 3.0 KR bore fruits of excellent quantity . compared with the control, the fruits were heavier , largere and had more creamish- yellow pulp. It is also the present site of the Moorea Biocode Project aimed at organizing a library of genetic markers that identify every species present on this island. Before such work on the island can take place, a complete list of taxa must be made. A comprehensive moss survey for this island has not been conducted since de Sloover (1994). The aim of the current study was to synthesize Zinc nanoparticles (ZnNPs) of Eriobotrya japonica, their characterization using standard procedures and its screening for various pharmacological activities; antibacterial, antifungal, phytotoxic and heamaglutination in comparison with the methanolic, ethanolicand Ethyl acetate (EtOAc) fractions. The UV-Visible absorption spectra of ZnNPs showed peaks at 455 nm and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) confirmed the presence of various functional groups such as, hydroxyl, amide, carbonyl, aldehyde, and alkynes. The Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) analysis showed that the particle size was between 30-60 nm with spherical shape. The presence of Zinc along with other elements, such as C, O, S, Si, and K, was confirmed by Energy Dispersive X-ray (EDX), andthe mean size was 33nm as indicated in X-ray diffraction (XRD) spectra. Glycyrrhizia uralensis is one of the most widely-used Chinese herbal medicines, and glycyrrhizic acid (GA) is its marker component. However, the GA content in G. uralensis cultivars is generally low. We selected three functional genes involved in GA biosynthetic pathway in G. uralensis, 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutary CoA reductase gene (GuHMGR), squalene synthase1 gene (GuSQS1), and β-amyrin synthase gene (GuBAS), and constructed three root-specific expression vectors by gene fusion, then transformed them into disarmed Agrobacterium tumefaciens EHA105 cells using CaCl2 freeze-thaw method, which was used to infect G. uralensis explants. There were about 13% explants survived in infection and then dedifferentiated to resistant callus. In order for sporangia to form, sperm cells must swim from the tip of a stem where they are produced to the tip of a stem where eggs are being produced. Beggiatoa is a genus of bacteria in the order Thiotrichales. They are named after the Italian medic and botanist F. S. Beggiato. The organisms live in sulfur-rich environments. During his research in Anton de Barys laboratory of botany in 1887, Russian botanist Sergei Winogradsky found that Beggiatoa oxidized hydrogen sulfide (H2S) as an energy source, forming intracellular sulfur droplets. Winogradsky referred to this form of metabolism as inorgoxidation (oxidation of inorganic compounds). I found in Steven Foster a teacher who could share a profound knowledge of economic botany, particularly in the cultivation and uses of herbs. In 1974, at age 17, Steven Foster, began his career at the Sabbathday Lake, Maine, Shaker Community Herb Department -Americas oldest herb business, dating to 1799. There he established three acres of production gardens and managed 1700 acres for the commercial harvest of botanicals. For forty-six years, Steven has photographed and researched herbs from the Amazon rainforest to the highlands of Vietnam. Writing this blog over the past year my focus has shifted more and more towards highlighting the plants in their natural environments. Ive come to understand that our lives depend entirely on plants, without them we would not be here … food, shelter, oxygen, healing. Yet there is a disconnection from the natural environment for those of us who live in cities following a hectic lifestyle. We forget that a day out in nature can so easily bring us back to ourselves and connect us to our bodies and souls feeling the spark why we are here, a joie de vivre..
