A resident at Boston Universitys Goldman School of Dental Medicine has been identified by Boston Public Health Commission (BPHC) authorities as having a probable case of swine flu, also known as H1N1. The resident, who is recovering, felt sick on April 28 and was tested for the swine flu virus at a Boston-area hospital. Those tests have been sent to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) for a definite identification. Anita Barry, director of the BPHCs infectious disease bureau, says 90 percent of cases that have been designated "probable" are found to be positive. David McBride, director of Student Health Services at Boston University, says that since April 27, the beginning of the residents potentially contagious period, the resident is believed to have had contact with 12 patients and 15 residents. Glaucoma is a complicated disease in which damage to the optic nerve results in vision loss. Elevated eye pressure is an important risk factor in the development of glaucoma. Boston, Mass. - Using proteomics techniques to study injured optic nerves, researchers at Boston Childrens Hospital have identified previously unrecognized proteins and pathways involved in nerve regeneration. Adding back one of these proteins-the oncogene c-myc-they achieved unprecedented optic nerve regeneration in mice when combined with two other known strategies. The findings were published online April 30 by the journal Neuron.. Researchers have been trying for many decades to get injured nerves in the brain and spinal cord to regenerate. Various molecules have been targeted and found to yield nerve growth, but many studies have been hard to replicate. Result-oriented innovations In addition to designating innovation units, MGH also made a concerted effort to track the results and quickly identify trends and adapt their protocols on the fly. They developed an evaluation schema in all of their units, collecting data before the innovation units launched, and at specific intervals to measure their successes or failures. They gathered qualitative feedback from focus groups, surveys, observations, and interviews with both patients and staff.. Almost immediately, they saw positive results. More than 95% of patients surveyed felt included as part of the care team, a stated goal of the Innovation Unit. Patients also reported that calls were answered promptly 88% of the time. It includes a new expedited process for municipalities to transfer coverage to the Group Insurance Commission (GIC) or design plans with features that are no greater than the median co-pays and deductibles in the GIC. But few have come so far as Caroline Laurendeau, the 411" coxswain for the Holy Cross Crusaders womens rowing team.. Caroline, who was born weighing just 1 lb. 11 oz., spent the first four-and-a-half months of her life in Neonatal Intensive Care Units (NICUs) at Boston Childrens Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center..
