The Malaysian federal government is committed to the completion of the Pan Borneo Highway project in Sabah and will collaborate with the Sabah state government in resolving issues surrounding its construction, according to a report by The Star.. Land acquisition is among the issues faced, and despite the challenges the project will be implemented, and workers as well as companies involved in the construction of the highway have nothing to worry about, said works minister Baru Bian. In May, it was reported that the Sabah section of the Pan Borneo Highway could be dropped; across Sabah and Sarawak, the highway would span 2,325 km.. I understand that they are very jittery about the whole thing, including the governments direction regarding the Pan Borneo Highway in Sabah. But I want to give assurance that the Federal government will carry out the project. It is our project and we want to see it completed well so that everyone would be happy, the works minister said.. ...
New research from the University of Minnesotas Institute on the Environment and Stanford University shows that freshwater stream ecosystems are highly vulnerable to oil palm plantation expansion.. The three-year study compared streams draining watersheds dominated by four land uses - intact forest, manually logged forest, community agroforest and oil palm plantation - in West Kalimantan, Indonesian Borneo, which is ground zero for palm oil production.. Kimberly Carlson, an IonE postdoctoral scholar and lead author on the study, says the research yielded some unexpected findings. First, oil palm plantation land use seems to have a greater effect on streams than community agroforest or low-impact logging. Researchers were also surprised to discover that a stream in a mature, closed-canopy oil palm plantation was almost as hot as, and yielded even more sediment than, a stream draining a watershed recently cleared for oil palm.. The study, published in the Journal of Geophysical Research: ...

According to one study, the putative ancestral primate chromosome 3 homolog is conserved in the Brown lemur, from which a pericentric inversion led to the ancestral Old World primate homolog conserved in the Bornean orangutan (49). Human/African ape homologs would differ from this chromosome form by two inversions. An even more complex scenario involving several recurrent sites of new centromere seeding was proposed by Ventura et al. (50), according to which human and Bornean orangutan would differ by three inversions. A third hypothesis suggested that from the ancestral simian homolog a common derived and two independent inversions would lead to Bornean orangutan and human chromosome 3 homologs (51). In conclusion, the evolutionary history of human chromosome 3 is probably the most dynamic and complex of all human chromosomes studied in detail so far.. ...

Parasite data were collected from unlogged and selectively logged lowland rain forests in Borneo. Scat from a female Viverra tangalunga (Malay civet) in the unlogged forest contained eggs of Capillaria spp., Trichuris sp., Mamomoganomus sp., and nematode larvae. Scat attributed to V. tangalunga contained reproductive products (eggs/oocysts/cysts/larvae) of Capillaria sp., Toxocara sp., Ancylostoma sp. (probably A. ceylanicum), Isospora spp., strongylate-type eggs (probably Ancylostoma spp.), Paragoni- mus sp. and other Trematoda eggs, Monocystis sp. cysts, Gnathostoma sp. (probably G. spinigerum), the lungworm Viverrostrongylus brauni, pinworm-type eggs, Eimeria spp., Sarcocystis-type sporocyst, dermanysid mites and mesostigmatid mites. Parasites from gut samples from two Hemigalus derbyanus (banded palm civets) road kills included Capil- laria sp., other trematode eggs, Demodex-type eggs, Ascarid-type eggs and pinworm-type eggs. The fanged frog Limnonetces kuhlii is known to be cryptic as seen in the dynamic of species delineation among the complexes. Yet no historical demographic and genetic structure has been fully documented for this species. We investigate historical events, diversification and dispersal of the Bornean Limnonectes kuhlii Complex via Mitochondrial DNA of partial 16S rRNA. Haplotype graphical network, demographic history, neutrality test and population subdivision analysis were used to assess population genetic of the species. Two haplogroups were detected distinct within population and panmictic from East and West of Lupar gap (Batang Ai). The Lupar gap has become the geographical barrier that restricts gene flow from western and eastern populations. Ragged multimodal mismatch distribution, long terminal branches and high mutational site of network showing population in Sarawak and Sabah were rarely migrate and low gene flow. Surprisingly, most of L. kuhlii population showed population constriction ...

Borneo langur (Trachypithecus) or lutung in local name, in Antan Kalang village. The consequences of land clearance for palm oil production are devastating for the wildlife in the area, including orangutans and monkeys who are dramatically threatened by the lost of their natural habitat
Adult male orangutans exhibit two modes of physical development, flanged and unflanged. Flanged adult males have a variety of secondary sexual characteristics, including cheek pads (called flanges), throat pouch, and long fur, that are absent from both adult females and from unflanged males. Flanged males establish and protect territories that do not overlap with other flanged males territories. Adult females, juveniles, and unflanged males do not have established territories. A flanged males mating strategy involves establishing and protecting a territory, advertising his presence, and waiting for receptive females to find him. Unflanged males are also able to reproduce; their mating strategy involving finding females in estrus and forcing copulation. Males appear to remain in the unflanged state until they are able to establish and defend a territory, at which point they can make the transition from unflanged to flanged within a few months. The two reproductive strategies, referred to as ...

Stephen Wulffraat discovered a new species of mammal in the island of Borneo, Indonesia.According to the photographers, the animal is "an enigmatic, red-furred creature with tiny ears and distinctive markings. The leaf that obscures its face makes it impossible to say if it has a pointed snout like a dog or fox, or a flat face like a cat. A second photo, from behind, shows it to have a long, bushy tail rather like a fox, and large hind legs. It is slightly larger than a domestic cat." Link...
The Gomantong Caves in Borneo are the type of place that makes most people want to tuck their socks into their pants and run the other way. First imagine the amount of feces that millions of bats and swiftlets produce … and then imagine how many feces-feasting bugs that would attract. And thats exactly what you have to walk through in order to explore what some have dubbed the Cockroach Cave.Cave ecologist and National Geographic grantee Donald McFarlane says he finds the bird and bat guano spectacular because of all the life it sustains. The cockroaches are innumerable, he says, and in some places their numbers are so dense that there is almost no space between one cockroach and the next.Cockroaches arent the only frights in the cave. Injured or dying birds and bats, as well as a mix of living and dead flies, ticks, and other bugs, rain down from above. Expedition member Keith Christenson says that while working in caves, scientists also need to be on high alert for wheelbarrow-loads of

Imported malaria is relatively rare in industrialized countries. Obtaining a correct diagnosis of malaria may be troublesome in centers where laboratory staff are less skilled in the proper identification and quantification of causative Plasmodium species, as may occur in countries in which malaria is not endemic. These centers often use commercially available rapid diagnostic tests to diagnose malaria. In contrast to our case, Bronner et al. reported that the BinaxNOW Malaria test did not detect a P. knowlesi infection in a traveler from Sweden who had a P. knowlesi infection acquired in Malaysian Borneo (2). Low parasitemia (0.1%) in this patient may have caused the lack of reactivity with the pan-malarial antigen aldolase (2).. We evaluated the BinaxNOW Malaria and the OptiMAL Rapid Malaria (Diamed, Cressier, Switzerland) tests for detection of P. knowlesi in human blood by analysis of consecutive blood samples taken after admission. These samples were stored at -20°C for 2 weeks until tests ...

Sabah: Malaysian wildlife researchers have tagged a Bornean slow loris for the first time as part of efforts to find out more about the nocturnal primate known for its big eyes and rare toxic bite.. The researchers in Sabah state on Borneo island fitted a radio-collar on a recently caught slow loris - a protected species that is threatened by the illegal pet trade - to enable them to study its behaviour. It will give scientists a valuable insight into the animal`s habits, such as where it sleeps and how it hunts for insects, lizards and other prey, they said in a statement on Sunday. As little is known about the Bornean slow loris, particularly in Sabah, any information collected… through tracking through the forest will be important in understanding the species, Benoit Goossens, director of the Danau Girang Field Centre that is spearheading the study, said in the statement. With this study, we also hope to raise the awareness in Sabah on the importance of protecting nocturnal primates as ...
OrangutanOrangutan Kalimantan The orangutans (also spelled orang-utan, orangutang, or orang-utang) are the two exclusively Asian species of extant great apes. Native to Indonesia and Malaysia, orangutans are currently found in only the rainforests of Borneo and Sumatra. Classified in the genus Pongo, orangutans were considered to be one species. Since 1996, they have been divided into two species: the Bornean orangutan (P. pygmaeus) and the Sumatran orangutan (P. abelii). In addition, the Bornean species is divided into three subspecies. Based on genome sequencing, the two extant orangutan species evidently diverged around 400,000 years ago. The orangutans are also the only surviving species of the subfamily Ponginae, which also included several other species, such as the three extinct species of the genus Gigantopithecus, including the largest known primate Gigantopithecus blacki. The ancestors of the Ponginae subfamily split from the main ape line in Africa 16 to 19 million years ago (mya) and spread

Tropical forests in Borneo (Brunei Darussalam, Kalimantan, Sabah and Sarawak) are considered as one of the twelve mega biodiversity centres in the world. However, until now, there is no up-to-date or complete documentation on the flora of the island. The Tree Flora of Sabah and Sarawak Project, jointly undertaken by the Forest Research Institute Malaysia (FRIM), the Forestry Department of Sabah and Forestry Department of Sarawak since 1991, is aimed at providing detailed and up-to-date botanical and ecological information on the tree resources of Sabah and Sarawak. Since its implementation, the project has established a close collaboration with and received generous help from botanists from local and international institutions/herbaria around the world. Up to 2007, a total of 1 745 species in 72 families and 267 genera have been revised and published in six volumes of the Tree Flora. These include the discovery and publication of 188 new species in 37 genera and 25 families. In addition, the ...
Receptor to interleukin-8, which is a powerful neutrophils chemotactic factor. Binding of IL-8 to the receptor causes activation of neutrophils. This response is mediated via a G-protein that activate a phosphatidylinositol-calcium second messenger system. This receptor binds to IL-8 with a high affinity and to MGSA (GRO) with a low affinity (By similarity).
Author Summary The simian parasite Plasmodium knowlesi is a common cause of malaria in Malaysian Borneo; however, little is known about its emergence over time, particularly in Sabah. We reviewed all available Sabah Department of health malaria notification records from 1992-2011, and considered notifications of P. malariae and P. knowlesi as a single group due to their microscopic similarity. We found that malaria notifications in Sabah have decreased dramatically, with P. falciparum and P. vivax notifications peaking at 33,153 and 15,877 respectively during 1994-1995, and falling to 605 and 628 respectively in 2011. Notifications of P. malariae/P. knowlesi fell from a peak of 614 in 1994 to ≈100/year in the late 1990s/early 2000s, however increased |10-fold between 2004 (n = 59) and 2011 (n = 703). In 1992 P. falciparum, P. vivax and P. malariae/P. knowlesi monoinfections accounted for 70%, 24% and 1% respectively of malaria notifications, compared to 30%, 31% and 35% in 2011. The increase in P.

In 2004 a large focus of Plasmodium knowlesi malaria was reported in the human population in Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo. Plasmodium knowlesi, a parasite of the South-East Asian macaques (Macaca fascicularis and Macaca nemestrina), had entered the human population. Plasmodium knowlesi is transmitted by the leucosphyrus group of Anopheline mosquitoes and transmission is largely zoonotic and restricted to the jungle setting. Humans entering jungle transmission sites are at risk. Since 2004, human cases of P. knowlesi have been continuously reported in local communities and in travellers returning from South East Asia. Plasmodium knowlesi is the most common type of indigenous malaria reported in Malaysia. Infections are most often uncomplicated but at least 10% of patients report with severe malaria and 1-2% of cases have a fatal outcome. Parasitaemia is positively associated with the clinical and laboratory markers of severe malaria. The current literature on P. knowlesi, including epidemiology, ...

Human infections with Plasmodium knowlesi, a malaria parasite of long-tailed and pig-tailed macaques, were thought to be extremely rare until a large focus of human infections were reported in the Kapit division of Sarawak, Malaysian Borneo in 2004. Macaques in the Kapit division also harbour P. cynomolgi, P. inui, P. simiovale, P. coatneyi, and P. fieldi. Under experimental conditions P. cynomolgi and P. inui can infect humans, and there has been one previous case of a naturally-acquired human infection with P. cynomolgi in Peninsular Malaysia, and recent cases of P. cynomolgi in asymptomatic individuals in Cambodia. The aim of the study was to determine whether human infections with P. cynomolgi and P. inui also occur in Sarawak. DNA extracted from blood samples obtained from malaria patients at Kapit Hospital were screened with nested PCR assays using species-specific primers directed at P. knowlesi, P. cynomolgi, P. inui, P. coatneyi and P. fieldi. The screening exercise indicated the ...
The simian parasite Plasmodium knowlesi causes severe human malaria; the optimal treatment remains unknown. We describe the clinical features, disease spectrum, and response to antimalarial chemotherapy, including artemether-lumefantrine and artesunate, in patients with P. knowlesi malaria diagnosed by PCR during December 2007-November 2009 at a tertiary care hospital in Sabah, Malaysia. Fifty-six patients had PCR-confirmed P. knowlesi monoinfection and clinical records available for review. Twenty-two (39%) had severe malaria; of these, 6 (27%) died. Thirteen (59%) had respiratory distress; 12 (55%), acute renal failure; and 12, shock. None experienced coma. Patients with uncomplicated disease received chloroquine, quinine, or artemether-lumefantrine, and those with severe disease received intravenous quinine or artesunate. Parasite clearance times were 1-2 days shorter with either artemether-lumefantrine or artesunate treatment. P. knowlesi is a major cause of severe and fatal malaria in Sabah.

Heterotrophic respiration is a major component of the soil C balance however we critically lack understanding of its variation upon conversion of peat swamp forests in tropical areas. Our research focused on a primary peat swamp forest and two oil palm plantations aged 1 (OP2012) and 6 years (OP2007). Total and heterotrophic soil respiration were monitored over 13 months in paired control and trenched plots. Spatial variability was taken into account by differentiating hummocks from hollows in the forest; close to palm from far from palm positions in the plantations.

A key challenge for tropical conservation biologists is to assess how forest management practices affect biodiversity and associated ecosystem functions. Dung beetles (Scarabaeidae: Scarabaeinae) provide an ideal focal guild for such studies. We compared dung beetle assemblages and experimentally assessed rates of dung removal and seed burial in undisturbed forest, low-intensity selectively logged forest under sustainable forest management, and high-intensity logged forest, not under sustainable management in Malaysian Borneo. In total, 7923 individuals from 39 species of dung beetle were collected. There were no significant differences in abundance, biomass or diversity across sites. Species richness was significantly lower in the high-intensity logged sites. Beta diversity was low: of 35 species recorded in undisturbed forest sites, 32 were also captured in low-intensity sites and 29 in high-intensity sites. The environmental and vegetation variables measured had little influence on species

Malaysia has something like 200 species of frogs. Of these, there were two that I really hoped to see on my first trip to this country. On my first night in Malaysia, my first goal was reached when Kurt found not one but two Wallaces Flying Frogs for me. But we failed to find the second target, the world-famous Long-nosed Horned Frog aka Malayan Horned Frog aka Borneo Horned Frog aka Asian Horned Frog aka yada yada yada. Now I was on my own in Borneo, without Kurts vast experience and sharp eyes to help me out. But I had gotten many chances to see him in action in Peninsular Malaysia, finding frogs of similar size and lifestyle, and I had picked up the basic tricks of the trade. I knew these Long-nosed Horned Frogs to be reasonably common at Kubah, and armed with my newfound experience I had a pretty good idea where and when and how to go looking for them. This paid off early in my second night at Kubah, when following some eyeshine led me to this ridiculously camouflaged and grumpy-looking ...
