Proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) is one of the worlds most important inflammatory diseases of the somatic and autonomic nervous system in psittacines. Only in 2008, almost 40 years after PDD has been described for the first time, one succeeded in identifying the infectious agent that is now known as Avian Bornavirus (ABV). In the present study, a total of 171 psittacines from Switzerland were examined on ABV by conventional reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and partly also by immunohistochemistry (IHC). Retrospectively paraffin-embedded brain samples from 69 PDD cases from 1989 to 2002 were analysed. The prospective study consisted of 102 psittacine samples of choanae and/or cloacal swabs of birds with PDD-suspicion, of clinically normal birds from flocks with confirmed PDD, of animals from a parrot rescue center as well as from necropsy material from psittacines with clinical and/or gross PDD-suspicion.
