Book Industry Study Group - Wikipedia
The Book Industry Study Group, Inc. (BISG) is a U.S. trade association for policy, technical standards and research related to books and similar products. The mission of BISG is to simplify logistics for publishers, manufacturers, suppliers, wholesalers, retailers, librarians and others engaged in the business of print and electronic media. The Book Industry Study Group, Inc. (BISG) began at the annual conference of the Book Manufacturers Institute in November 1975. Here, a few publishers and manufacturers met informally with representatives of several trade associations to discuss the urgent need to improve the industrys research capability. Once begun, this small group invited others to join in sponsoring a seminal study of book industry information needs on which a future program could be based. BISG was incorporated as a not-for-profit corporation in February 1976 and its Report on Book Industry Information Needs was completed and published in April 1976. The report confirmed the ...

Three Percent: Book Industrys Schizophrenia, and Hey, That Sounds Familiar
On the surface these twin pieces of news would seem to suggest that success in the book industry, as with other forms of entertainment, is increasingly dependent on the production of major hits, works that are so successful that they can support a family of less successful siblings. David Young, chairman and chief executive of Hachette Book Group, said that the company had racked up 104 New York Times best sellers this year.. ...
Smashwords: 2017 Book Industry Predictions: Intrigue and Angst amid Boundless Opportunity
Books are entertainment, and the broad trend in entertainment is pay for streaming a la Netflix, and away from standalone products. Thats why KU is a success and isnt going to disappear - its going to grow in leaps and bounds. For better or worse ebooks are going to be commodified much like music and movies. Its perhaps a good idea to keep an eye on those industries to see where the trends are. Certainly, KU is 80% of my income and I dont see that changing anytime soon. Also, a MAJOR trend for authors that is a common discussion on Facebook groups is the importance of creating your own backend platform outside of Amazon. As the number of ebooks grow, finding them through search engines of any kind will become more and more difficult. But your own mailing list of 10 000 readers (or 200 000 as I see some top authors have) will in future probably become the main source of sales, through Amazon or other platforms. To understand real trends in reading you have to look much, much broader than ...

Book Metadata Under a Bushel
If you play with this API a bit, itll be pretty obvious to you that building an API is not the way things have always been done in the book industry. Heres how things are done: Publishers cause ONIX XML files that describe their books to come into existence. These files are shipped to trading partners. The reason, more or less, that the publishers do this is because way back when, Amazon forced them to do it that way instead of the horrible old ways they used to do things ...
10 Questions to Ask Before Signing with a Small Press Publisher (Part One) - Writers After Dark
Small press publishing has become a significant cottage industry. Why Black Panther might also be a milestone in black-Jewish relations - Jewish Telegraphic Agency
JTA) - If you have checked in on the pop culture zeitgeist at all in the past week, you know that the film Black Panther is breaking box office records and Hollywood assumptions about race.. The well-received Marvel flick was written and directed by African-Americans (co-written by Ryan Coogler and Joe Robert Cole, and directed by Coogler) and features a mostly African-American cast anchored by Chadwick Boseman in the title role as a black superhero.. But some fans might not realize that the original Black Panther character was actually created by two white Jews.. The superhero was the brainchild of writer Stan Lee (born Stanley Lieber) and artist Jack Kirby (born Jacob Kurtzberg), who already were veterans of the comic book industry when they started working together at Marvel at the dawn of the 1960s. The first comic book series they produced in tandem was the Fantastic Four in 1961, but they would go on to create a slew of beloved superhero characters, from the Hulk to Iron Man to the ...

Zorro - The granddaddy of all Hispanic superheroes. Heck, he was one of the major inspirations for Batman, which definitely makes him one of the most influential characters in adventure fiction. He was created in 1919 by Johnson McCulley for a pulp magazine. While masquerading as an ineffective fop, Don Diego de la Vega donned cape, mask, hat, and sword to battle corrupt officials in Spanish colonial California.. Though hes most associated with movies, TV, and prose fiction, there have been several incarnations of Zorro comics, including a recent series from Dynamite Entertainment.. So theres what we got. It doesnt look like that bad a list of characters - but I am consistently surprised that there arent more Hispanic characters in comics, especially with a rapidly-increasing population of Hispanic-American citizens. Is it just a matter of the comic book industry being dominated by Caucasians, both as creators and as readers? That is probably a big part of the problem, but the smart ...

Will Studying Economics Make You Rich? A Regression Discontinuity Analysis of the Returns to College Major - American Economic...
We investigate the wage return to studying economics by leveraging a policy that prevented students with low introductory grades from declaring the major. Students who barely met the GPA threshold to major in economics earned $22,000 (46%) higher annual early-career wages than they would have with their second-choice majors. Access to the economics major shifts students preferences toward business/finance careers, and about half of the wage return is explained by economics majors working in higher-paying industries. The causal return to majoring in economics is very similar to observational earnings differences in nationally representative data ...

Realistically, the book should be shipped to Europe and North America late August/early September, but the electronic version might be available in July. The format of this electronic version remains to be determined (eBook, Kindle, etc.), but regardless, it will allow access to our video collection (nearly 160!).. Cinco Puntos Press | Independent Book Publisher
He spent seven years smuggling marijuana into the United States over the border from Mexico and somehow lived to write about it. From the dusty streets of dirt-poor mountain villages to the gleaming corruption of the American justice system, Don Henry Ford paints a picture of a business where no hands are clean it s that old song about the war nobody wins, only this time it s being played out of a beat-up old truck as it heads north filled with dope. All but bankrupted after a failed attempt at cotton farming in the 1970s but in possession of an indomitable work ethic and a fierce desire for self-determination, Ford slips into the role of drug smuggler with a nonchalance ( This is too damned easy ) and an audacity you have to marvel at: He just dreams it up and does it, headfirst all the way. Temerity, Ford demonstrates time and again, is the one compulsory attribute of the drug smuggler, and the one he s most blessed with. The really remarkable thing about Ford and his book isn t so much the ...

When most people hear the word Catskills, they think of Borscht Belt comedians and Woodstock (both the town and 1969 music festival). An interesting idea at the alphavictim blog which discusses when the major American cities were founded and suggests the last one was Phoenix, more than 125 years ago. Anyone who has driven through rural American knows there are some great, virtually deserted places where a major city could have thrived if only Americas pattern of immigration and expansion had been different or a major deposit of precious metals had been located nearby. Nice climate, cheap land, pretty setting, lots of water, etc. Just no jobs, I guess. With so many virtual office workers who can live anywhere around these days, could they somehow get together and found a 21st century New York somewhere in rural America ...

Prophesies of Godlessness explores the surprisingly similar expectations of religious and moral change voiced by major American thinkers from the time of the Puritans to today.
ah, mephistophelis.: ex historia faustae, or from my browser to yours
In this article, Im going to argue that the US government, in particular, is being overrun by the wrong kind of person. Its a trend thats been in motion for many years but has now reached a point of no return. In other words, a type of moral rot has become so prevalent that its institutional in nature. There is not going to be, therefore, any serious change in the direction in which the US is headed until a genuine crisis topples the existing order. Until then, the trend will accelerate. The reason is that a certain class of people - sociopaths - are now fully in control of major American institutions. Their beliefs and attitudes are insinuated throughout the economic, political, intellectual and psychological/spiritual fabric of the US ...
Malcolm Hoenlein: Chuck Hagel is a Jackie Mason on Steroids | Matzav.com
Newly-appointed Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel is a Jackie Mason on steroids, the head of Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations says. So much of what he has said is disturbing, executive vice chairman Malcolm Hoenline told Newsmaxs The Steve Malzberg Show, referring to Hagels 2008 crack that the Jewish lobby intimidates a lot of people in Washington.. We will judge him by what he does now. He claims that it was a mistake and he didnt intend what he said. Hes sort of a Jackie Mason on steroids when it comes to what he has said.. Hoenline was referring to the famed borscht-belt comic, whos quips have sometimes gotten him in hot water.. He said he will watch carefully to see how the new defense chief proceeds with U.S. policies with Israel.. [On Tuesday], he met with the defense minister of Israel, made some very strong statements [and] has come out strongly on the Iran issue, Hoenline said.. But the truth is … each of the presidents came into office ...

While the chances of hitting the jackpot in any major American lottery game are one in millions, the old adage that you have to be in it to win it rings true no matter the odds. LottoGopher Holdings Inc. (OTCQB: LTTGF) (CSE: LOTO) (FSE: 2LG) makes it easier than ever to get in on the game. The Los Angeles based company disrupts the market and the old way of purchasing tickets, and redefines convenience from even the ease of a quick stop at a convenience store to bringing purchase options to its customers to order lottery tickets online. LTTGF provides a quick, innovative and convenient way for California residents to purchase tickets online for Powerball, Mega Millions and/or Californias own SuperLotto Plus.. And, while a players odds increase with the simple purchase of a ticket (i.e., from zero to one in millions for the jackpot or zero to one in 23 to 25 for winning any prize, depending on the game), LTTGF customers can quickly and conveniently pool tickets to further increase odds of ...
Right Care Series in The Lancet - Lown Institute
Overuse is not limited to rich countries, and underuse is not limited to poor countries.. For example, imagine a homeless diabetic man living in a major American city, without access to primary care. He becomes confused due to high blood sugar and is taken to the emergency department, where he has a head CT. The scan is normal, but happens to show something on his thyroid gland in his neck. While its almost certainly unrelated to why hes in the hospital, he is diagnosed with a possible thyroid cancer. Needle biopsies are performed and the condition is slow-growing and nonlethal, but he has thyroid surgery anyway. This mans care has included clear underuse of effective primary care to manage his diabetes, as well as likely underuse of social support services to help him find stable housing. However, he has also been a victim of likely overdiagnosis (diagnosing a thyroid tumor that was unlikely to ever cause symptoms) and overtreatment.. Alternatively, consider New Delhi in India: it has built ...

The Great Relearning Marches On - PJ Media
The problem with Egalia and gender-neutral toy catalogs is that boys and girls, on average, do not have identical interests, propensities, or needs. Twenty years ago, Hasbro, a major American toy manufacturing company, tested a playhouse it hoped to market to both boys and girls. It soon emerged that girls and boys did not interact with the structure in the same way. The girls dressed the dolls, kissed them, and played house. The boys catapulted the toy baby carriage from the roof. A Hasbro manager came up with a novel explanation: Boys and girls are different.. They are different, and nothing short of radical and sustained behavior modification could significantly change their elemental play preferences. Children, with few exceptions, are powerfully drawn to sex-stereotyped play. David Geary, a developmental psychologist at the University of Missouri, told me in an email this week, One of the largest and most persistent differences between the sexes are childrens play preferences. The ...

Ive long since quit keeping track of how many annual Book Expo conventions Ive attended since Undercover Books opened in 1978; over the past 39 years Id say I havent missed more than five of these trade shows. Ive written about many of them on this blog. Last year was a miss with the show in Chicago, so I was glad that the Javits Center on the west side of Manhattan was the venue once more for the 2017 rendition of the book industrys annual get-together. Though the show is diminished in attendance and book industry importance since the glory days when it was known as the ABA, the period when the American Booksellers Association, the trade association of indie booksellers, owned and ran the convention. It was a great asset, but eventually they sold the show to a company that ran trade shows; currently, its owned by Reed Exhibitions. Their management and the choices they make each year about the show is a topic of much discussion and some controversy among booksellers and ...
Pandemic, the saviour of the comic book industry - The Softcopy
However, that was not the case everywhere. The sales during the lock down did go down by at least 60 percent. People were hesitant to come to the store and get books delivered even after the stores opened, said Mukund, store manager at the Blossoms Bookstore at Church Street.. Shashank Rao, an avid comic book reader, said, Before the lockdown started, I had lost touch with reading comic books, but having enough free time while working from home, I got back to reading them, and most of the books I read were bought from online stores.. Readers had other options, too. They could read them online. Anish Talpade, an Indian comic artist, and creator of The Mundane Life comic and Endless manga, said, Publishing work online was easier during the lockdown as the printing work takes much money, and that wasnt possible at that time. Online space gave artists to showcase their work. Publishing work online and adapting to subscription-based model worked well during the lockdown.. For some of the ...

miniFactory Ultra, technical specifications and pricing - 3D Printing Industry
3D printing with ULTEM, PEKK and PEEK. As previously reported by 3D Printing Industry, an increasing number of options for using high-grade thermoplastics have become available. Such materials include ULTEM (PEI), PEKK, and PEEK. These polymers offer greater tensile strength and chemical resilience than traditional plastics used in the 3D printing, such as ABS and PLA. However, 3D printing with polymers like PEEK requires a high melting temperature and a temperature controlled environment. These requirements make it necessary to specifically manufacture 3D printers with such capabilities. miniFactory Ultra is another addition to the family of PEEK 3D printers like the recently launched 3DGence INDUSTRY F340.. Starting this month, around 100 Facebook employees will trial the glasses by wearing them throughout the day in public.. One of the earliest smart eyewear collaborations was with AR headset developer Vuzix, whereby Luxexcel 3D printed a range of prescription lenses for use with the Vuzix Blade AR Smart Sunglasses. More recently, the company also celebrated its partnership with non-profit organization IFB Solutions by providing free 3D printed prescription eyewear to seventeen school children in Winston-Salem, North Carolina.. The 4th annual 3D Printing Industry Awards are coming up in November 2020 and we need a trophy. To be in with a chance ...

March 2018 - Sharon Bidwell
The other week I read a post by Isaac Marion. Hes the author of the best-selling WARM BODIES, made into a film. Hes a success. A writer who has made it in the world of the book industry, right? With a film (somewhat based) on one of his books, how could he not? Alas, being a writer is rarely that simple.. As I had already discovered, Warm Bodies is now the first in a trilogy. I read the second title, THE BURNING WORLD, this year after discovering its existence. I include my thoughts on both books below but what I didnt know until more recently is that the third title, THE LIVING, is burning a hole in Isaac Marions hard drive, the author having finished it almost a year ago.. Although the first book was on the NYT bestseller list, book 2 hasnt done so well, and, unless it does, there may be a no go on the third title. If it comes to that, I can only hope the author will find another publisher or go the route so many writers have to and self-publish (if contracts allow, mind). I wont go ...

Still Life With Cat: 2009
Anyway, such were the arguments of authors and publishers and they looked pretty reasonable to me. Among the submissions to the Commission I can see the names of at least 40 writers, booksellers, publishers and agents Ive known and respected for decades -- Frank Moorhouses submission is worth reading for its own sake just as an exceptional piece of writing -- but then I read this most excellent blog post by that most excellent blogger Bernice Balconey, who has written several subsequent posts on the subject, and is an energetic participant in the discussion at Larvatus Prodeo linked to above; Bernices original post was the first argument for change Id read from someone with insider knowledge of the Australian book industry and it is still the most persuasive. Some of her points have been convincingly answered by various commentators but the one I cant go past is her summary point: the cat is out of the bag. The consumer exists in a truly global market. Or perhaps Im just a sucker for ...
ebooks
This month LibraryThing is pleased to catch up with Michael Tamblyn, the CEO of Rakuten Kobo, a Canadian ebook, audiobook and ereader company doing business in 150 countries. Tamblyn serves on the board of OverDrive, an ebook distributor working with both the non-profit and retail sectors; is involved with AGE-Well, a Canadian organization dedicated to developing technology and services for healthy aging; and is the founder of BookNet Canada, a non-profit organization that develops technology, standards, and education to serve the Canadian book industry.. What drew you to the book business and book technology?. I always loved bookstores. The small town where I grew up had a pretty standard books+cards+stationary store, but I thought it was fantastic and I began bugging the owner for a job at 11 or 12. He was a bookseller of the old school, wore three piece suits to work retail, and had absolutely no need of an urchin to work in his store. Fast forward 8 or 9 years, Im working my way through a ...

Are you interested in an African-influenced space opera? - The Progressive Pub
From its very beginnings, the USAmerican comic book industry has been dominated by white characters. Whether were talking genres like crime, romance, horror, or science fiction, the industry has demonstrated a very clear bias in favor of white people (specifically white, heterosexual, cisgender men, but my focus here is on race). This holds true for my genre of choice: superheroes. For most of the history of superhero comics, white people have been headliners. From the Golden Age to the Silver Age, through the Bronze Age and into the Copper Age, the overwhelming majority of characters with their own comics have been white people. Even when writers began featuring characters of color in their stories (think of heroes like the Black Panther, the Falcon, Shang-Chi, Sunfire, Red Wolf, Karma, Danielle Moonstar, Storm, Tyroc, Dawnstar, Invisible Kid II, Vixen, Vibe, Black Lightning), these characters were typically members of teams, or background supporting characters. Rarely did they carry books of ...

Regional Literary Culture in the 21st Century | University of Tasmania
Tasmania is a bookish place. Australias first novel was published in Hobart in 1830, and todays Tasmanian writers are acclaimed nationally and around the world. Tasmanias economy relies on the creative and cultural industries; a higher percentage of people work in the arts than in any state in Australia, and the island is renowned for its diverse festival programs and extensive archival repositories. Separated from mainland and international literary culture by vast distances, Tasmanias literary identity is evident every day in our bookstores, libraries, and conversations.. Examining contemporary literary culture from the periphery throws its values and practices into sharp relief, providing the focus to make informed judgements about the sustainability and potential of the book industry and regional literary culture into the future. How does literature circulate in bookstores and festivals, paper or online publications? What roles do regional identity or environment play in the making, ...

A Major American Meat Company Is Going Big With Antibiotic-Free Pork | Food Democracy Now
By: Willy Blackmore. Tyson is responding to consumer demand with a new line of meat sourced from pigs raised without drugs.. Last year, it was all about poultry: Major fast-food companies like McDonalds announced that they would move away from chicken raised with antibiotics, and numerous retailers said they would switch over to cage-free eggs. The changes could redefine the status quo for raising poultry in the U.S., but in addition to pointing out that antibiotic- and cage-fee isnt the same as humane treatment of livestock, animal rights groups had one overarching question: Why only chickens?. There were signs that the trend, as it were, could extend to other livestock too. Unlike its competitors, Subway put forth an ambitious plan to remove antibiotics from all of its meat supply chains (albeit over a very long timeline), Hormel acquired Applegate Farms, and Perdue Farms bought the pioneering good meat company Niman Ranch in September.. Now, another considerable step is being taken toward ...

The Internet - The first Worldwide Tool of Unification (The End of History). ... Now I give you something that few think about: What do you think the Internet is all about, historically? Citizens of all the countries on Earth can talk to one another without electronic borders. The young people of those nations can all see each other, talk to each other, and express opinions. No matter what the country does to suppress it, theyre doing it anyway. They are putting together a network of consciousness, of oneness, a multicultural consciousness. Its here to stay. Its part of the new energy. The young people know it and are leading the way.... . ... I gave you a prophecy more than 10 years ago. I told you there would come a day when everyone could talk to everyone and, therefore, there could be no conspiracy. For conspiracy depends on separation and secrecy - something hiding in the dark that only a few know about. Seen the news lately? What is happening? Could it be that there is a new ...

The Technical Association of the Graphic Arts was originally conceived in a lounge at the Parker House Hotel in Boston in October 1947 when Dr. Frederick Frost, research director of S.D. Warren Paper Company met with Michael Bruno, research director of the Lithographic Technical Foundation (LTF, predecessor to Graphic Arts Technical Foundation, now Printing Industries of America) to discuss the concept for a technical association for the printing industry.. As a result of that meeting the concept for a new organization was discussed and approved at the next meeting of the LTF Research Committee. Michael Bruno was elected the first president and he and Dr. Marvin Rogers, research director of R.R. Donnelley & Sons, wrote the constitution and by-laws. The first conference was held in Chicago in April of 1949, drawing 124 attendees, including 92 of the original 149 charter members.. ...

Does Evolution Explain Everything About Life? - Creation Book Publishers
Is big-picture, molecules-to-man evolution as well attested scientifically as the sphericity of the Earth? Are the first fossils 3.4 billion years old, with life just a matter of basic chemistry? What about RNA world, parasitic DNA, Darwins Tree of Life, or claims that blind evolution is innovative and creative?. In this short but scientifically-detailed book (illustrated in full colour), 10 Ph.D. scientists with biblical creationist convictions tackle the assertions of ten of their evolutionary counterparts, in their own areas of specialism: Jonathan Sarfati, Pierre Jerlström, Robert Carter, David Catchpoole, Stuart Burgess, Tasman Walker, Jim Mason, Donald Batten, Peter Borger, and Samuel Gan.. This makes for an intriguing and thought-provoking read. Lofty evolutionary claims are carefully assessed scientifically, enabling readers to draw their own conclusions about the claimed power of evolution to explain all of life. Is the bravado of evolutionary popularisers justified, or just a ...
The Gum Chewing Rattler - by Joe Hayes | Cinco Puntos Press | Independent Book Publisher
Veteran storyteller Hayes masterfully spins a kid-pleasing tall-tale from the Arizona desert. From the first line, When I was a kid growing up in Arizona, I used to love to chew bubblegum, he shows his gift for connecting with young readers, who will completely accept his report of gum-inspired scoldings from a stern teacher and gum-caused laundry woes, and then why not? his story of how his trusty wad of bubblegum saved him from a rattlesnake: the snakes fangs get entangled in the gum and then the snake blows the worlds biggest bubble which explodes in the worlds biggest pop. Mexican artist Antonio Castros hyper-realistic illustrations complement the text perfectly. Young Joe is depicted with such meticulous attention to detail, from the gum bulge in his cheek to the hole in the bottom of his boot, that the gum-chewing rattler seems just as convincing: if a snake did chew bubblegum, this would be exactly how he would look. A brief illustrators note at the end shows how Castro uses models ...
