When comparing these colourful illustrations to the ones of 19th century, one could state that they are softer, friendlier and maybe more appealing for children, when regarding their bright colours. The overall impression is that these might be more suitable for children since they convey a calm, peaceful and happy image. Moreover, as in many cases of childrens books illustrations of the 20th century, anatomical accuracy and realistic approaches are rarely to not at all considered anymore. This gives the illustrations a more drawn and made-up character which might help children to understand that these stories are not true but play in a fantasy world. This way, they can more easily differentiate between story and reality ...

Detiam o Lenine (For Children About Lenin) was published by the State Publishing House in 1926, two years after Lenins death, and created by the Institute for Childrens Reading. The books editor is A. Kravchenko, who put together a lengthy 34-chapter, 71-page childrens book on the history of the revolution and the importance of Lenin. The books illustrations were executed by Boris Kustodiev, a former member of the World of Art group, whose members brought Russian book art to a new and exquisite level in the early twentieth century. Kustodievs other works include painting, portraiture, and stage design. After the 1917 Revolution he began to do illustrations for childrens books through the Raduga (Rainbow) publishing house. At the time that he created these illustrations, Kustodiev was suffering from paraplegia following tuberculosis of the spine, and was confined to his bed.. Megan Swift. ...
Chip began the evenings lecture stating that one can often get a clearer idea of a space from a drawing than a photograph. At first I disagreed with his statement, but after seeing a few slides of the books illustrations, I began to see his point. And that is one of the best features of this (mostly) graphic novel. In Chips capable hands one is able to understand the space and flow of many well-known gardens throughout landscape history. Ive seen photos of many of these gardens before but the combination of the illustrations and the accompanying text made clear ideas that I had previously not been able to see - forced perspectives, axle relationships, and how one moves through and views the gardens at different points. The drawings eliminate distractions and simplify the spaces into the main themes. (I of course prefer to think this simplification and clarity is the result of good illustration and descriptive text, rather than my minds inability to concentrate on long verbose garden ...
Manabe is one of the most famous illustrators of the postwar period, having been the person who brought a certain degree of respectability to the art of the book illustration. He pioneered his own personal style characterized by highly colorful scenes full of clean, flowing lines, where both man and nature are uniformly stylized in a way that seems to speak of his very personal idealistic, hopeful stance towards the future. (This blazing 1960s vision of the future is lovingly recaptured in Mind Game.) He was extremely prolific as a book cover designer, designing the covers for many novels by famous alternative sci-fi writers Shinichi Hoshi and Yasutaka Tsutsui, and was outspoken on various issues, authoring numerous of his own nonfiction tomes. Born and raised in the rural city of Niihama on the north side of Shikoku, Manabes art has become a part of the landscape of his hometown, both figuratively and literally, as his illustrations decorate various installations around the city, including ...

Canadian Childrens Book News just published an excellent article on Illustrator Qin Leng. She started her book illustration career only 4 years ago and has already illustrated more than a dozen books. Leng is busy! She works 9-5 Monday to Friday as a layout supervisor at 9 Story Animation, designing background animations for kids shows and when she comes home and on weekends she works on her own projects. I need another me to do my day job, she jokes. Though I dont find that funny. Its a reality were all well aware of.. I love Lengs line work - and she talks about that in the article which shes posted on her Tumblr page.. In other news, I visted the Belleville Public Library yesterday to talk to 80 kids! about my book Over by the Harbour. The kids were incredible and genuine and wanted me to know everything about them. How many teeth theyd lost etc. It was a bit inspiring for when I went back home to work on my second upcoming book.. ...
Studies in Bibliography is a scholarly journal founded in 1948 by Fredson Bowers, a professor of English at the University of Virginia, and published by the Bibliographical Society of the University of Virginia. Its aim is to contribute to bibliographical scholarship by publishing articles in any of the areas of study that deal with printed books and manuscripts as physical objects: the history of paper, type, letterforms, book illustration, and binding; printing and publishing history; the description and analysis of the physical features of books and manuscripts; textual criticism and scholarly editing; and the history of bibliography itself. The journal, which appears in the form of substantial volumes, usually at intervals of about a year, established an international reputation quickly and has long been regarded as one of the major journals in its field, having repeatedly brought out groundbreaking articles that have achieved the status of classics. ...
Its a very instructive experience to see his rough sketches develop as he stretches and changes an idea until he comes up with what looks a fresh and spontaneous picture. Thats what he means by his book title. These designs do not just happen spontaneously: they are the result of hard work. He is very aware of modern painters - Klee, Mondrian, the much under-rated Sonia Delauney, Klimt, and Max Ernst. Theres also a portrait of Duke Ellington which has elements of Francis Bacon in its colouring and handling of paint, and a series of posters for the Venice Biennale which combine images of the citys emblematic lion with ink spattering reflecting his appreciation of the work of Jackson Pollock. I found his book illustrations less successful, his restaurant designs inspired in terms of lighting, and his product design superb. Theres a whole page of sketches for a cocktail glass, any one of which you would be pleased to hold. But the finished product - complete with double-sided conical bowl with ...

The earliest pictures assigned to him by some are altar-pieces with the monogram H. B. interlaced, and the date of 1496, in the monastery chapel of Lichtenthal near Baden-Baden. Another early work is a portrait of the emperor Maximilian, drawn in 1501 on a leaf of a sketch-book now in the print-room at Karlsruhe. The Martyrdom of St Sebastian and the Epiphany (now Berlin, 1507), were painted for the market-church of Halle in Saxony. Baldungs prints, though Düreresque, are very individual in style, and often in subject. They show little direct Italian influence. His paintings are less important than his prints. He worked mainly in woodcut, although he made six engravings, one very fine. He joined in the fashion for chiaroscuro woodcuts, adding a tone block to a woodcut of 1510. Most of his hundreds of woodcuts were commissioned for books, as was usual at the time; his single-leaf woodcuts (ie prints not for book illustration) are fewer than 100, though no two catalogues agree as to the ...

Edward Bawden was a remarkable artist-craftsman-maker, skilled in many media. He was a fine water-colourist, printmaker and designer. Having no private income, he was of necessity versatile and workmanlike across the diverse creative fields in which he made his living.. Advertising posters for Fortnum and Mason and Ealing Studios, wallpapers and textiles, book illustrations, tiles for London Underground and the mid 20th century masthead of the Observer newspaper all came from his studio.. A couple of weeks ago, I visited an exhibition of his work, entitled Edward Bawden at Home, mounted by the small and quirky Fry Gallery in Saffron Walden. Among the delights to be seen here was a striking woodcut of a cat with one paw on a ball of wool. But what most arrested my attention and engaged my imagination was the small painting above it - a depiction of the original woodblock surrounded by a neat arrangement of all the tools involved its making.. This owning of means as well as result is rare. Our ...

Until today, the catalogue description of this print made no mention of any of the authors (artist, designer, engraver or publisher) of this print: it was by an unidentified hand. However, Sothebys have in their forthcoming drawings sale in New York a pair of drawings attributed to the artist Claude-Louis Desrais (1746-1816), and one of them (Sothebys Old master drawings, New York 25 January 2012, lot 123) is the original design for the Wellcome Librarys coloured engraving. Indeed Sothebys say in their catalogue record that this drawing and a similiar one by Desrais were probably intended for prints or book illustrations as they are reddened on the reverse. However, as the Wellcome Library print is much cruder in execution than the drawing -- Sothebys drawing has much finer detail -- there may have been an intermediary print or drawing from which the Wellcome Librarys engraving was copied. An impression of the same engraving is also in the National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, Maryland, ...
