Book description. This established textbook introduces the essentials of classification as used for information storage and retrieval. By adopting a gradual progression from very basic principles and by providing practical examples, it enables the reader to gain a firm grasp of one idea before proceeding to the next.In information work, classification may be used in various ways, for coding in computerized systems; for the organization of manual and machine-readable files and catalogues; and for shelf arrangement in libraries and information services. It can constitute a basis for the production of alphabetical authority lists of subject terms, or thesauri, and can be applied to other subject indexing and search techniques. The approach adopted here is a wide one and is not limited to classification for one ...

A reference collection is a collection of objects maintained for the purpose of study and authentication. Reference collections are generally large undertakings maintained by institutions; instead of having a single representative of each object, they will typically have multiples, so as to illustrate variations and, sometimes, provide samples for comparisons. For human-created objects such as postage stamps or coins, a good reference collection will also include an assortment of (carefully labelled) fakes and forgeries. Since the purpose is study rather than personal gratification or display, a reference collection values damaged objects as much as the pristine; in fact, organizations maintaining reference collections will encourage members to donate their damaged or poor-condition items to the collection. In biology, reference collections, such as herbaria are an important sort of information about variations of populations within a species. They are also the repository of holotypes used as ...
Some of the earliest major Mongolian acquisitions at Penn came through a cooperative acquisition program administered by the Library of Congress New Delhi Office. Starting in 2016, the Penn Libraries, together, undertook an expansion of its Mongolian holdings. Retrospective acquisitions in Ulaanbaatar, made with support from the School of Arts and Sciences in 2016, form the foundation of the expanded Mongolian Collection. Large quantities of additional materials, many of them less commonly held, have been acquired through gifts: the Georgij Sanji Zagadinow Collection of Kalmyk Materials (and papers) and the Tsorj Lama Collection.. With these recent developments, Penn joins the Library of Congress, Indiana University, University of Eastern Washington, and Harvard University in holding substantial Mongolian collections. ...
Online Table II describes the twin subject population (n=344 individuals). Female subjects (n=267) had lower basal SBP (P=0.0438), plasma epinephrine (P=0.0065), urinary epinephrine (P=0.0284), and norepinephrine (P=0.0192) values than male subjects (n=77), consistent with previous reports.21. Older subjects (age ≥40 years, n=180) had higher basal SBP (P,0.0001) and DBP (P,0.0001) and poststress SBP (P,0.0001) and DBP (P=0.0008) values than younger subjects (n=164). Older subjects had lower baroreceptor slope, during both upward (P,0.0001) and downward (P,0.0001) deflections. Plasma norepinephrine was increased (P=0.0045) in older subjects.. Online Table III presents correlations between variables. In general, similar correlations were obtained with the parametric and nonparametric methods. Because of the effects of sex and age (online Table II), further inferential statistics were performed on age- and sex-adjusted data. Urinary norepinephrine excretion correlated directly with basal SBP, ...

Richard Olshen. Dr. Olshens interests regarding research are in statistics and mathematics and their applications to medicine and biology. Many efforts have concerned binary tree-structured algorithms for classification, regression, survival analysis, and clustering. Those for classification and survival analysis have been used with success in computer-aided diagnosis and prognosis, especially in cardiology, oncology, and toxicology. With the late Leo Breiman, Jerome Friedman (of Stanford), and Charles Stone (of the University of California, Berkeley) he coauthored the book Classification and Regression Trees, that gives motivation, algorithms, various examples, and mathematical theory for what have come to be known as CART algorithms. The approaches to tree-structured clustering have been applied to lossy data compression, especially in digital radiography (with Robert Gray of the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford and others), and also to HIV genetics. Recent research concerns ...
The Augmented Square Mile is a project that will create a layer of information, images and text over one square mile around KHOJ, which can be seen and discovered, using augmented reality applications on smart phones.. Khirkee, where KHOJ Studios is located, offers snippets of the changing face of Delhi. For within this square mile, we have one of Delhis biggest malls, a little sliver of new offices of the lower courts and parts of a village going through rapid urbanisation. Khirkee is a large heterogeneous collection of neighbourhoods keeping up with the emerging character of contemporary India.. The project adds meaning and information to Khirkee by enriching user experience. Simultaneously, through images, text and other forms of digital art, users can expand their understanding not only about the place, but also about contemporary arts. It allows the opening of new modes and models of learning, discovering, and knowledge exchange through technological intervention.. TAGS App Art, Augumented ...

The Genetic Analysis Workshop 14 simulated dataset was designed 1) To test the ability to find genes related to a complex disease (such as alcoholism). Such a disease may be given a variety of definitions by different investigators, have associated endophenotypes that are common in the general population, and is likely to be not one disease but a heterogeneous collection of clinically similar, but genetically distinct, entities. 2) To observe the effect on genetic analysis and gene discovery of a complex set of gene × gene interactions. 3) To allow comparison of microsatellite vs. large-scale single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) data. 4) To allow testing of association to identify the disease gene and the effect of moderate marker × marker linkage disequilibrium. 5) To observe the effect of different ascertainment/disease definition schemes on the analysis. Data was distributed in two forms. Data distributed to participants contained about 1,000 SNPs and 400 microsatellite markers. Internet-obtainable

An oncolytic virus, due to its ability to replicate and lyse cancer cells while leaving normal cells intact, is an example of targeted cancer therapy. Reovirus is intrinsically oncolytic without the need for any genetic manipulation due to its ability to target cells with an activated ras pathway. micro RNAs (miRNA) play critical role in both viral infection and oncogene activation. While significant advances in the role of miRNA in a variety of diseases including cancer have been made, the majority of the studies done on miRNA signatures have been done using homogenized tissue, typically via RT PCR. While useful, one drawback of this methodology is that it is, in essence, a population study, sampled from a heterogeneous collection of cells and tissue types. The miRNA signatures found via these methods are not able to determine whether the miR and target protein were found in the same tissue type (tumor, stroma, etc). Microscopy-based multi-analyte methods offer the benefit of visualizing miRNAs ...

3.4. Capitalization * Capitalization must be consistent within the document and ideally should be consistent with related RFCs. Refer to the online table of decisions on consistent usage of terms in RFCs [TERMS]. * Per CMOS guidelines, the major words in RFC titles and section titles should be capitalized (this is sometimes called title case). Typically, all words in a title will be capitalized, except for internal articles, prepositions, and conjunctions. * Section titles that are in sentence form will follow typical sentence capitalization. * Titles of figures may be in sentence form or use title case. 3.5. Citations * References and citations must match. That is, there must be a reference for each citation used, and vice versa. * Citations must be enclosed in square brackets (e.g., [CITE1]). * A citation/reference tag must not contain spaces. Example: [RFC2119] rather than [RFC 2119] However, the proper textual naming of an RFC contains a space. Example: See RFC 2119 [BCP14] for more ...

Although it is well recognized that arrhythmias are a significant cause of death in ischemic heart disease, the role of acute hypoxia in induction of arrhythmia is not well understood. We incorporated all published data reporting the effects of acute hypoxia on INa, INa-L, ICa-L, IKs, and IKr into the Luo-Rudy model of a cardiac ventricular AP and determined the effect on AP morphology and APD. In the absence of β-AR stimulation, hypoxia has little effect on the AP (Figures 2, 5, and 6⇑⇑) even when we modeled the effects of hypoxia on INa-L and INa at twice the rates reported in published studies.14-16 In the presence of β-AR stimulation in a paced cell, EADs are generated only at CL of 1000 ms when the effects of hypoxia on ICa-L are modeled alone or together with hypoxic IKs (Figure 5). Experimental results confirm the modeling results (Figure 8, Online Figure VIII, and Online Table I). Similar results were obtained for pause-induced EADs at a shorter CL of 300 ms (Figure 6). EADs ...
Anyway you show a 95% mash efficiency with 13.9 gal pre-boil and 12 gal post-boil. Using the shown grain measurements I come up with 67.7 gravity points maximum from the five grains for the 13.9 gal wort collected (using 38, 37, 32, 34, 28 max PPG respectively for each of the 5 grains in order in the recipe, from Palmers online table). With a 95% mash efficiency that makes the pre-boil gravity 1.064 points. Assuming a boil down to 12 gallons I then get 1.074 as the post-boil gravity which is a wee bit higher than the 1.068 shown in the recipe ...
In this category, perfusion imaging was used (alone or in conjunction with other tests) to predict patient outcome. The 26 articles in this category are listed in on-line Table 1.3-28 Two approaches have been used with regard to predictors. First, some studies have used serial perfusion imaging during the first 1 to 4 days after acute cerebral ischemia, in which the change in perfusion imaging (as evidence of reperfusion) was used as the predictor of later clinical outcome. Some of these studies were prospective clinical trials of thrombolytic treatment in which all patients had evidence of perfusion-diffusion mismatch at entry.3,9,10 Because the perfusion imaging data were serial in nature, by definition they were retrospectively analyzed after therapy was administered. Thus, although the studies were prospective, only the first perfusion imaging dataset could have influenced decision making. Other studies in category 2 were solely retrospective ones; as such, the role of initial perfusion ...

I am honored to assume the presidency of this incredible organization. I would like to thank my predecessors on the Presidential Line, Past Presidents Ken Cheung, David Polly, and John Dormans and President Elect Peter Newton, who have helped guide me and partnered with me through these last years leading up to my presidency. Their work and dedication to the society, along with those who work in the office under Tressa Gouldings oversight, is amazing to me and unlike any I have seen in a volunteer organization. We should all be lucky to have them in our midst.. Read more » ...

Efficient access to information contained in online scientific literature collections is essential for life science research, playing a crucial role from the initial stage of experiment planning to the final interpretation and communication of the results. The biological literature also constitutes the main information source for manual literature curation used by expert-curated databases. Following the increasing popularity of web-based applications for analyzing biological data, new text-mining and information extraction strategies are being implemented. These systems exploit existing regularities in natural language to extract biologically relevant information from electronic texts automatically. The aim of the BioCreative challenge is to promote the development of such tools and to provide insight into their performance. This review presents a general introduction to the main characteristics and applications of currently available text-mining systems for life sciences in terms of the following: the
A vertebral-epidural spinal arteriovenous fistula (AVF) is an abnormal arteriovenous shunt connecting the vertebral artery to the spinal epidural venous plexus, and may occur spontaneously or secondary to a variety of causes. These unique lesions are uncommon in adults and rarer still in children. Previous reports have grouped together a heterogeneous collection of such arteriovenous lesions, including arterial contributions from the upper and lower vertebral artery, with venous drainage into a variety of spinal and paraspinal collectors. Here, through two cases, we delineate a distinct entity, the lower vertebral-to-epidural AVF. The salient clinical and anatomic features are summarized and contextualized within the broader constellation of vertebrovertebral AVF, the utility of a transarterial intravenous/retrograde intra-arterial endovascular approach is highlighted, and a new use of the Penumbra Occlusion Device (Penumbra Inc) for this purpose is reported.. ...
The lysosomal storage diseases represent a heterogeneous collection of disorders caused by the malfunction of the lysosomes or one of their digestive proteins, eg. Tay-Sachs or Pompes disease. Enzyme deficiency leads to the accumulation of substrates within the cell, resulting in impaired overall cell metabolism. Broadly, these can be classified into one of three categories according to symptoms/signs: • neurological regression, hypotonia or fitting • dysmorphia • hepato/splenomegaly. ...

The present study provides quantitative reference values for cerebral development, based on 107 MRIs acquired between 25 and 40 weeks in 39 very preterm infants. We used a newly developed sequence, MP2RAGE, which gives the T1 relaxation time, and compared it with MR imaging markers, ADC and FA. The selected cohort can be considered cerebral-low-risk, according to the exclusion criteria. Our findings were comparable with existing data (On-line Tables 3 and 4) issued from fetuses and preterm infants, detailed below.. Given fetal diffusion values and maturation curves obtained between 22 and 36 weeks, our findings of ADC and FA values were comparable with the ones presented by different groups,20⇓-22 though subtle differences between fetuses at 37 weeks of gestation and preterm infants at TEA were reported.23 No fetal data of T1 values are available.. While a multitude of data exist for preterm infants at TEA,24,25 only a few studies have described the longitudinal evolution of quantitative brain ...

With the development of large computers and with the advent of the threat of ballistic attack, NORAD developed a series of semiautomated warning and assessment systems, culminating with the development of the 427M system contained within Cheyenne Mountain, which became operational in 1979. As soon as the 427M system became operational NORAD and the US Air Force Air Defense Command developed a series of command-level programs to resolve operational and sustainment problems with the 427M system by the creation of individual acquisition programs with limited scope and cost. In 1981, the Air Force began a modernization effort consisting of five separate acquisitions to replace aging and obsolete computer systems at the Cheyenne Mountain Complex. By the mid 1980s, six ...

The staff relations committee is made up of staff association leaders and members of UWs administration, and has a different chair every year. Currently its Anne Jenson, past president of the staff association. One of the topics discussed in todays report is Lack of Power -- a phrase some people who responded to the survey applied to the association itself. I got DM at 6 3/4 years of age. I have had it for 50 years. I never stayed home from anything due to high BG, , ketones, etc. Just watched Urine (at that time), careful about diet, and carry on. My Dr. Haunz = past President of ADA told my Mom to treat her as normal as possible. Dont let her use DM as an excuse for not doing things and living.. I was raised that way and thank God for that advice and a mother who listened to it. I had to make up my own mind if I could or couldnt do some things. For instance, there were a few careers I would have chosen if they accepted Diabetics or if I thought I could handle that job being a diabetic. Needless to say, I did not choose those because I had been taught to think for myself and take responsibility for my self and my diabetes. ---------------------------------------------------------- for HELP or to subscribe/unsubscribe, contact: [email protected] send a DONATION http://www.Insulin-Pumpers.org/donate.shtml ...
