Abstract Genomic prediction of the extreme forms of adult body height or stature is of practical relevance in several areas such as pediatric endocrinology and forensic investigations. Here, we examine 770 extremely tall cases and 9,591 normal height controls in a population-based Dutch European sample to evaluate the capability of known height-associated DNA variants in predicting tall stature. Among the 180 normal height-associated single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) previously reported by the Genetic Investigation of ANthropocentric Traits (GIANT) genome-wide association study on normal stature, in our data 166 (92.2 %) showed directionally consistent effects and 75 (41.7 %) showed nominally significant association with tall stature, indicating that the 180 GIANT SNPs are informative for tall stature in our Dutch sample. A prediction analysis based on the weighted allele sums method demonstrated a substantially improved potential for predicting tall stature (AUC = 0.75; 95 % CI 0.72-0.79) ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Adult Height and Fertility in Men with Congenital Virilizing Adrenal Hyperplasia. AU - Urban, Maria D.. AU - Lee, Peter. AU - Migeon, Claude J.. PY - 1978/12/21. Y1 - 1978/12/21. N2 - The effects of congenital adrenal hyperplasia on adult height and fertility were studied in 30 afflicted men. The patients heights ranged from 150.0 to 178.6 cm (mean ±1 S.D. of 164.0±7.6), which is significantly lower than both the mean adult height for American men and that of the patients parents (P,0.005). There was no correlation between adult height and the age at which therapy was begun, possibly because the patients treated before one year of age had the salt-losing form of the syndrome. Therapeutic compliance may also have been involved. Apparently normal fertility, indicated by paternity and normal sperm counts, was found in 18 out of 20 patients evaluated. This group included five untreated patients who were found to be fertile and to have normal plasma testosterone and gonadotropin ...

STUDY OBJECTIVE: To examine the separate associations of leg length, a biomarker of prepubertal exposures and growth, and trunk length with adult levels of liver enzymes: alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyltransferase (GGT), aspartate transaminase (AST) and alkaline phosphatase (ALP). METHODS: A cross-sectional analysis of baseline data from the British Womens Health and Heart Study, a random sample of British women aged 60-79 years. RESULTS: Leg length was inversely associated with age-adjusted levels of ALT, GGT and ALP. These associations remained when controlling for childhood and adulthood social class, physical activity, smoking, alcohol consumption, waist-to-hip ratio and trunk length. Trunk length was positively associated with ALT and inversely associated with ALP and the associations remained when adjusting for covariables. CONCLUSIONS: Adult liver function is affected by early life environmental exposures as reflected in leg length, and this may suggest common childhood ...
Trisomy 9p is an uncommon anomaly characterised by mental retardation, head and facial abnormalities, congenital heart defects, kidney abnormalities, and skeletal malformations. Affected children may also show growth and puberty retardation with delayed bone age. Auxological and endocrinological data are lacking for this syndrome. We describe three girls and one boy with 9p trisomy showing substantial growth failure, and we evaluate the main causes of their short stature. The target height was normal in all families, ranging from 0.1 and -1.2 standard deviation scores (SDS). The patients had a low birth-weight (from -1.2 to -2.4 SDS), birth length (from -1.1 to -3.2 SDS), and head circumference (from -0.5 to -1.6 SDS). All patients presented with substantial growth (height) retardation at the time of 9p trisomy diagnosis (from -3.0 to -3.8 SDS). The growth hormone stimulation test revealed a classic growth hormone (GH) deficiency (GHD) in patients 1, 3, and 4. In contrast, patient 2 was determined to
A system automatically adjusts an orthodontic bracket to a desired occlusal height on a tooth within a 3D environment. The system allows a practitioner to specify a desired occlusal height at which to place the bracket on the tooth. The practitioner may choose the desired occlusal height from a standardized set of occlusal heights or may create a customized occlusal height to meet a patients particular needs. Based on the desired occlusal height, the system automatically adjusts the placement of the orthodontic bracket to the desired occlusal height on the tooth within the 3D environment. The system then generates a visual representation the resulting bracket placement within the 3D environment.
Objective. Short adult stature has previously been associated with cardiovascular disease but its relationship with the microvascular complications of diabetes is uncertain. Therefore, we evaluated the association between adult stature and prevalence and incidence of diabetic microvascular complications.. Research design and methods. This cross-sectional and longitudinal study comprises 3968 adult patients with type 1 diabetes from the Finnish Diabetic Nephropathy (FinnDiane) Study and 1246 adult patients from the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial (DCCT). In FinnDiane, diabetic nephropathy was defined as urinary albumin excretion ≥300 mg/24h, dialysis, or renal transplantation. Retinopathy was divided into background and proliferative (laser-treated) retinopathy. In the DCCT, original nephropathy (class 1-6) and retinopathy (ETDRS) classifications were used.. Results. In FinnDiane, patients in the lowest quartile of adult height had increased risks of prevalent diabetic nephropathy ...

Heterosis is thought to be an important contributor to human growth and development. Marital distance (distance between parental birthplaces) is commonly considered as a factor favoring the occurrence of heterosis and can be used as a proximate measure of its level. The aim of this study is to assess the net effect of expected heterosis resulting from marital migration on the height of offspring, controlling for midparental height and socioeconomic status (SES). Height measurements on 2,675 boys and 2,603 girls ages 6 to 18 years from Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski, Poland were analyzed along with sociodemographic data from their parents. Midparental height was calculated as the average of the reported heights of the parents. Analyses revealed that marital distance, midparental height, and SES had a significant effect on height in boys and girls. The net effect of marital distance was much more marked in boys than girls, whereas other factors showed comparable effects. Marital distance appears to be ...

BACKGROUND: Interactions between nutrition and infections in developing countries are complex, and analyses of the interrelations require data from longitudinal studies that span several years and a comprehensive framework facilitating the formulation of food and health policies. OBJECTIVE: The effects of dietary intakes in the Philippines for birth outcomes, heights, weights, and morbidity during ages 2-24 mo; heights and weights during ages 8-19 y; and completed adult heights were analyzed. METHODS: Data on >3000 children from the Cebu Longitudinal Health and Nutrition Survey were modeled in 4 sets of analyses. Cross-sectional and multilevel models were estimated for length and weight at birth. Dynamic random-effects models were estimated for childrens heights, weights, and morbidity levels during ages 2-24 mo. Childrens heights and weights during ages 8-19 y were modeled by using random-effects models. Childrens heights at age 22 y were modeled for investigating the effects of nutritional ...

Bone age is the degree of maturation of a childs bones. As a person grows from fetal life through childhood, puberty, and finishes growth as a young adult, the bones of the skeleton change in size and shape. These changes can be seen by x-ray. The bone age of a child is the average age at which children reach this stage of bone maturation. A childs current height and bone age can be used to predict adult height. For most people, their bone age is the same as their biological age but for some individuals, their bone age is a couple of years older or younger. Those with advanced bone ages typically hit a growth spurt early on but stop growing sooner, while those with delayed bone ages hit their growth spurt later than normal. Children who are below average height do not necessarily have a delayed bone age; in fact their bone age could actually be advanced which if left untreated, will stunt their growth. At birth, only the metaphyses of the long bones are present. The long bones are those ...
A model has been developed to account for and prevent the anomalies encountered in topographic images of transition metal dichalcogenide monolayers using dynamic atomic force microscopy (dAFM). The height of WS2 monolayers measured using dAFM appeared to be increased or decreased, resulting from the interactions between the tip and the surface. The hydrophilic SiO2 substrate appeared higher than the weakly hydrophilic WS2 when the tip amplitude was low or at a high set point (high force). Large amplitudes and low set points corrected the step height inversion, but did not recover the true step height. Removing water from the sample resulted in an order of magnitude reduced variation in step height, but the WS2 appeared inverted except at low amplitudes and high set points. Our model explains the varying step heights in dAFM of TMDs as a result of varying tip-sample interactions between the sample and substrate, in the presence or absence of capillaries. To eliminate contrast inversion, high amplitudes
Overweight and obesity are considered among the major health concerns worldwide. The body mass index is a frequently used measure for overweight and obesity and is associated with common non-communicable diseases such as diabetes type II, cardiovascular diseases and certain cancers. However, the body mass index does not account for the distribution of body fat and relative fat to muscle mass. 3D laser-based photonic full body scans provide detailed information on various body circumferences, surfaces, and volumes as well as body height and weight (using an integrated scale). In the literature, body scans showed good feasibility, reliability, and validity, while also demonstrating a good correlation with health parameters linked to the metabolic syndrome. However, systematic differences between body scan derived measurements and manual measurements remain an issue. This study aimed to assess these systematic differences for body height, waist circumference, and body mass index using cross-sectional data

2017 Springer International Publishing Switzerland Purpose: To examine the association of age when adult height was attained with glioma risk. Methods: We analyzed data from a US-based case-control study of glioma risk factors. Logistic regression was used to estimate odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (CI) associated between age at attainment of adult height and glioma risk. Multivariate models were adjusted for age, race, sex, education, and state of residence. We examined associations overall, and according to glioma grade, sex, and final adult height. Results: The study set included n = 951 controls and n = 776 cases, with a median age of 56 (18-92); the majority was male (53.8%) and identified as Caucasian. Older age at height completion was associated with an increased risk of glioma. A significant positive trend was observed both for glioblastoma (OR 1.10; 95% CI 1.04-1.17 per 1-year increase in age) and lower grade non-glioblastoma subtypes combined (OR 1.18; 95% CI 1.10-1.28 ...

It has been hypothesised that estrogen functions to regulate growth plate fusion by stimulating chondrocyte apoptosis, angiogenesis and bone cell invasion in the growth plate. Another theory has suggested that estrogen exposure exhausts the proliferative capacity of growth plate chondrocytes, which accelerates the process of chondrocyte senescence, leading to growth plate fusion. The height-related genes FGFR3, CBFA1, ER and CBFA1 were screened for novel polymorphisms using denaturing HPLC and RFLP analysis. In total, 24 polymorphisms were identified. Two SNPs in ER (rs3757323 C,T and rs1801132 G,C) were strongly associated with adult male height and displayed an 8 cm and 9 cm height difference between homozygous genotypes, respectively{about 4 inches}. The TC haplotype of these SNPs was associated with a 6 cm decrease in height and remarkably, no homozygous carriers of the TC haplotype were identified in tall subjects. No significant associations with height were found for polymorphisms in the ...
TY - JOUR. T1 - Effects of Vertical Scaling Methods on Linear Growth Estimation. AU - Lei, Pui Wa. AU - Zhao, Yu. PY - 2012/1. Y1 - 2012/1. N2 - Vertical scaling is necessary to facilitate comparison of scores from test forms of different difficulty levels. It is widely used to enable the tracking of student growth in academic performance over time. Most previous studies on vertical scaling methods assume relatively long tests and large samples. Little is known about their performance when the sample is small or the test is short, challenges that small testing programs often face. This study examined effects of sample size, test length, and choice of item response theory (IRT) models on the performance of IRT-based scaling methods (concurrent calibration, separate calibration with Stocking-Lord, Haebara, Mean/Mean, and Mean/Sigma transformation) in linear growth estimation when the 2-parameter IRT model was appropriate. Results showed that IRT vertical scales could be used for growth estimation ...

CAH children can also suffer from obesity, the cause of obesity among those patients remains uncertain but many factors play a major role in it. It is widely speculated that obesity is linked to glucocorticoid dosage 16. Moreover, an interesting hypothesis states that chronic adrenal hypofunction with decreased adrenaline synthesis may also have a role in the development of obesity 17. Patients with classic 21-hydroxylase deficiency display significantly lower plasma concentrations of epinephrine and metanephrine as well as urinary epinephrine excretion than normal healthy subjects 17. Underweight subjects were 13 (19.1%), 39 (57.4%) were normal weight, 4 (5.9%) were overweight and 12 (17.6%) were obese. Underweight children may be attributed to a poor nutritional status of these patients and low socioeconomic status. Obese children had at least one BMI measurement ?95 percentile and had at least one reading ?85 percentile. Our data showed a significant association between hydrocortisone dose, ...
As part of Whitneys fourth birthday celebration it was time to go visit her pediatrician for her annual checkup. The bad news was that she had to get four shots. One year later, Whitney has jumped up to the 50th percentile for height. What a shock! She jumped up to the average height on the typical growth chart ...
The secular changes in growth and maturation can be seen as indicators of socio-economic and health status. In most European countries the age of onset of puberty and of menarcheal age has been decreasing during the past few decades. The duration of puberty seems also to decrease, though few studies provide sufficient data to support this postulation. The four Dutch nationwide growth surveys are useful examples assessing the secular trend in pubertal development over the past 45 years. Genetic and environmental factors contribute to the secular changes. Environmental factors seem to be the most important. Recently, attention has been given to substances with oestrogen-like actions that are present in nutrients. The possible role of these substances in growth and maturation is discussed.. ...

By Megan RauscherNEW YORK (Reuters Health) - Among seniors, an increase in the ratio of their arm span to their height -- indicating a probable loss of height -- is strongly associated with shortness of breath and reduced lung capacity, according to a new study. Many physicians, who regularly care for older individuals, have suspected an association between loss of height and symptoms of shortness of breath, Dr. Maw P. Tan noted in comments to Reuters Health. It may just be a matter of reduced space for the lungs, Tan explained. I recall a consultant geriatrician I once worked for saying, I think shes just ran out of space, in response to a breathless older female patient of small stature after numerous normal tests for her heart and lungs.Arm span measurement is normally close to standing height, so Tan, from Newcastle University in the UK, and others used the arm span-to-height ratio as a measure for loss of height in a study involving 66 subjects 61 to 81 years old with a variety of disorders

Hi Angelo,. I hope this doesnt find you too late. I am 6 ft tall and this height table is comfortable for me. My brother-in-law is 6-7 and fits at my table but does have to slouch. To raise the height of your table, adjust the plywood template measurements. I wouldnt raise it any height than 2 or 3 inches or your average height guests may be uncomfortable sitting at your table. I would suggest first changing the height measurement (28-1/2), drawing it out on plywood, and make a gut check to see if you think it will still be stable enough once the table top is on (I think it will be). If you think its not wide enough, change the width dimension (27) a little, probably no more than 29. Remember not to go wider than the table top though and dont cut the template out until you feel comfortable with it. For example, adding 2 inches to the 27×28-1/2 plywood template would change to a 27x30-1/2 template. Also note that your cut angles will change too. Youll have to figure those out based ...

Most of us are not happy about the way we look, especially when we lack height. It is common to find short people, both men, and women lacking in self-esteem and confidence. Genes contribute primarily to our lack of height because of the part played by the human growth hormone.. HGH plays a significant role in the development of long bones and cartilage, which is crucial for our height. Some of the other known causes for us being short could be diet, hormones, poor posture (vertebral compression), etc.. There are several stretching exercises available that help to increase height. Yoga asanas as sun salutations also play a vital role in helping to increase height. There are umpteen easy ways to increase height fast at home (for girls and boys).. A balanced diet with a healthy lifestyle is a must, along with exercises such as yoga, swimming to gain those elusive inches in our height. One must be diligent in whatever method one chooses to increase height as this is something that cannot occur ...
The possibility that our findings were chance, bias, or residual confounding cannot be discounted. The effect sizes we found were small and the confidence intervals were large. Residual confounding by gestational age, social position, mid-parental height, birth order, or current weight and other factors could partly explain results. Adjustment for these factors greatly attenuated effect sizes, and despite the fact that attention was paid to the quality of measurement, these may have been made with error. The number of children with complete data to age 7 years was modest in comparison with the total number of children in our study, and our analysis restricted to these children assumed their data to be missing completely at random, which we know not to be the case. Hence bias attributable to selective loss to follow up could have weakened our results. However, the measurement of diet carries with it a degree of imprecision, and the true effect size of birth weight on macronutrient intakes could ...

The primary purpose of this study is to provide methods that can be used to determine the most suitable drop height for shock testing military equipment, in an efficient and cost ineffective manner. Shock testing is widely employed to assess the performance of electronic systems, including military devices and civilian systems. Determining the height of the drop for a test item is an important step prior to performing the test. Dropping a test item from excessive height leads high G-peak values to damage the test equipment. On the other hand, dropping an item from a low height may not generate the required G-peak value and duration. Therefore, prior to performing shock tests, an optimal drop height must be established to ensure that the resulting G-peak value and duration time match the required test values. The traditional trial-and-error methods are time-consuming and cost-ineffective, often requiring many attempts. To improve the conventional approaches, this study proposes the application of
Background: Relationships between excess body fat, body fat distribution, and body proportions with physical fitness are important to explore because emphasis is placed on monitoring these health markers during interventions aimed at improving child health. It is known that physical activity and therefore cardiorespiratory fitness are essential for health and life. Therefore can improved physical functionality such as an ability to run 550 m, a measure of cardiorespiratory fitness, be inferred from anthropometric measures in children? There was no published evidence for children on the relationship of the waist to height ratio; a measure of abdominal fatness, in relation to cardiorespiratory fitness. Furthermore the external and relatively fixed influence of ethnicity and social deprivation on physical fitness and interrelations with body fatness are rarely examined together. Explorations undertaken in this body of work aimed to increase the understanding of the relationships of anthropometric ...
