The effects of Pluronic F68, a nonionic surface-active agent, on blood viscosity and platelet adhesiveness during extracorporeal circulation were investigated. Blood viscosity was significantly decreased. Platelet adhesiveness decreased markedly in six patients within ten minutes after intravenous injection. Pluronic F68 has many properties and actions which make it a useful additive to perfusion systems. Its potential in the treatment of diseases in which high viscosity or increased platelet adhesiveness are present deserves investigation.. ...
Thirty one patients with giant cell arteritis (GCA) receiving standardised prednisolone treatment were followed up for one year with analyses of plasma viscosity, erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR), C reactive protein (CRP), and fibrinogen concentration. On the day of diagnosis all patients had an increased plasma viscosity and ESR, whereas the concentration of CRP was normal in three patients and fibrinogen concentration and haptoglobin values were normal in one patient. IgG levels were increased in two patients. Plasma viscosity correlated significantly with the ESR, IgG level, and fibrinogen concentration. Laboratory variables in subgroups of patients with GCA proved by biopsy were not different from the whole group of patients with GCA. The follow up showed that CRP normalised faster than the ESR, plasma viscosity, and fibrinogen concentration. Plasma viscosity and the ESR paralleled clinical findings more closely and predicted flare ups better than the other variables. Plasma viscosity ...

N2 - The suspension of hardened erythrocytes (red blood cells) differs from the suspension of normal erythrocytes with respect to their rheological behavior. The deformability of normal and hardened erythrocytes (obtained by heating blood at 49°C or by incubating erythrocytes in a solution of hydrogen peroxide) was measured with a slit diffractometer and erythrocyte suspension viscosity was measured with a rotational viscometer. We found that when erythrocytes were heated at 49°C, with much less deformability than normal erythrocytes, their suspension viscosity was almost the same as the normal blood viscosity at high shear rates, whereas when erythrocytes were incubated in a solution of hydrogen peroxide, with an intermediate decrease of deformability, their suspension viscosity was greatly increased. Authors: Shi, Y.D. , Agosti, R. , Ticozzelli, P. , Nasrawi, F. , Villa, S. , Somazzi, R. , Giovagnoni, M.G. , Longhini, E. Article Type: Research Article Abstract: Attention has been paid to the relationship between hypertension and hemorheology by several authors and their results showed that hypertension was associated with altered blood viscosity. The previous reports were empirically from one or several points of blood viscosity under different shear rates. Can we consider the pathogenesis from the whole curve of blood viscosity versus shear rate? Our aims are to use new concepts to reveal hemorheological properties and to analyze the pathological changes for essential hypertension by a Casson equation which summarize the whole curve of blood viscosity versus various shear rate. We use two parameters which are …derived from Casson equation and regressed from all the data of shear stress and shear rate, i. e. Casson yield stress and Casson viscosity, to describe the hemorheological changes ...
As Waldenstroms macroglobulinaemia is incurable, treatment is only indicated in symptomatic cases. Plasmapheresis is effective for short term control of hyperviscosity and its associated symptoms. The oral alkylating agent chlorambucil is effective in controlling the disease and there are reports of its successful use in cases with pulmonary involvement,4 5 although treatment for 12 months may be required before an adequate response is obtained. Treatment with combinations of chemotherapeutic agents has also been found to be effective.. In view of her hyperviscosity, our patient was admitted to hospital for plasmapheresis, ultimately requiring eight sessions. As treatment for her underlying macroglobulinaemia she received chemotherapy with six cycles of the nucleoside analogue fludarabine (25 mg/m2daily for five days, repeated every four weeks). There was a marked improvement in the appearances of the chest radiograph (see fig 1below) and the patient is now symptom free. Plasma viscosity fell ...
Hemorheology, also spelled haemorheology (from the Greek αἷμα, haima blood and rheology), or blood rheology, is the study of flow properties of blood and its elements of plasma and cells. Proper tissue perfusion can occur only when bloods rheological properties are within certain levels. Alterations of these properties play significant roles in disease processes. Blood viscosity is determined by plasma viscosity, hematocrit (volume fraction of red blood cell, which constitute 99.9% of the cellular elements) and mechanical properties of red blood cells. Red blood cells have unique mechanical behavior, which can be discussed under the terms erythrocyte deformability and erythrocyte aggregation. Because of that, blood behaves as a non-Newtonian fluid. As such, the viscosity of blood varies with shear rate. Blood becomes less viscous at high shear rates like those experienced with increased flow such as during exercise or in peak-systole. Therefore, blood is a shear-thinning fluid. ...

RBC aggregation is a major determinant of blood viscosity, particularly under the conditions of low shear stress, and therefore it affects blood flow dynamics mainly within the microcirculation, where such conditions prevail [9]. Experimental models and clinical studies demonstrate the potential of RBC aggregation to hinder blood flow through the microcirculation in various diseases [1]. The formation of sludge blood under these conditions is assumed to cause tissue hypoxia and acidosis, and to lead to the met- abolic disturbances. A pathogenic role for erythrocyte aggregation has been postulated in acute coronary syn- dromes [2,6]. These studies examined the blood viscosity, not the erythrocyte aggregation, which seems to be most important from our standpoint. Furthermore, we mentioned the importance of the erythrocyte aggregation for the vessels injury. Rheological disorders allow atherogenic particles to be longer exposed to the vascular endothelial and consequently greater interaction ...

Erythrapheresis was performed in 10 patients with polycythaemia secondary to hypoxic lung disease (mean PaO2, 6.8 kPa (51 mm Hg)). The mean packed cell volume decreased from 0.64 to 0.48 in men and from 0.56 to 0.42 in women, with significant decreases in blood viscosity at both high and low shear rates (p less than 0.001). Patients showed significant improvement in six-minute walking distances (p less than 0.001) and in tests of mental alertness (p less than 0.01) compared to control subjects. Visual analogue scales confirmed symptomatic improvement after erythrapheresis. Erythrapheresis significantly improved symptoms, mental function, and work performance in patients with polycythaemia secondary to hypoxic lung disease. The procedure was well tolerated by all patients and no complications occurred. ...
The modeling of the viscous behavior of nanoemulsions and nanosuspensions is discussed. The influences of the viscosity ratio, solvation and aggregation of nanodroplets and nanoparticles on the relative viscosity of nanofluids are considered. The relative viscosity of a nanofluid is strongly affected by solvation of nanoparticles. The scaling of the relative viscosity of nanoemulsions is successfully carried out using the volume fraction of the solvated nanodroplets. Four sets of experimental relative viscosity data of nanoemulsions consisting of different diameter nanodroplets (27.5 nm-205 nm) all collapse on a single unique curve when the data are scaled on the basis of the volume fraction of the solvated nanodroplets. A similar scaling is achieved using six sets of experimental relative viscosity data on nanosuspensions consisting of different diameter nanoparticles (29 nm-146 nm). A new modified version of the Oldroyd model is proposed to describe and predict the viscosity of nanofluids. The model

Immediate therapy of symptomatic hyperviscosity is directed at reduction of blood viscosity. Plasmapheresis is the initial treatment of choice for the management and stabilization of HVS, as it is usually safe for and well tolerated by the patient. By removing the circulating excess paraproteins located in the intravascular space, serum viscosity decreases and the patients symptoms improve. Leukapheresis, plateletpheresis, and phlebotomy are indicated for HVS from leukostasis, thrombocytosis, and polycythemia, respectively. However, plasmapheresis and the aforementioned blood therapies are not the definitive treatment, as they do not address the underlying dysproteinemia and/or blood cell dyscrasia. Long-term management is directed at control of the underlying disease to prevent production of the monoclonal protein. A consult to ahematologist/oncologist is required. ...

The pathogenic potential of RBC aggregation within the microcirculation is dependent on the extent of RBC aggregation and the cohesive forces within the aggregate (i.e., the resistance of aggregates to shear-induced disaggregation).25 This increase of the required shear forces might have important physiological consequences, especially at the microcirculatory level, since RBC are only able to pass through small capillaries as single cells.5 However, since γmin for SCA and SCC patients were similar, differences of blood viscosity and RBC deformability between the two groups probably play a role in their unequal clinical severity.26. Although the forces required to disperse preformed RBC aggregates are elevated in SCA and SCC subjects, the extent of aggregation at stasis (i.e., AI) was lower than control in both groups; this finding contrasts with results obtained by Obiefuna et al.27 on SCA patients but is consistent with results obtained by Chien et al.2 The reasons for the discordant results ...

Viscosity is measured with various types of viscometers and rheometers. A rheometer is used for those fluids that cannot be defined by a single value of viscosity and therefore require more parameters to be set and measured than is the case for a viscometer. Close temperature control of the fluid is essential to acquire accurate measurements, particularly in materials like lubricants, whose viscosity can double with a change of the only 5 °C.. For some fluids, the viscosity is constant over a wide range of shear rates (Newtonian fluids). The fluids without a constant viscosity (non-Newtonian fluids) cannot be described by a single number. Non-Newtonian fluids exhibit a variety of different correlations between shear stress and shear rate.. One of the most common instruments for measuring kinematic viscosity is the glass capillary viscometer.. In coating industries, viscosity may be measured with a cup in which the efflux time is measured. There are several sorts of cup - such as the Zahn cup ...

While the above-mentioned viscosity modifiers can satisfy part of the oil recovery needs, these polymers still experience some challenges that hinder their effectiveness. For example, when the viscosity of reservoir oil is high, so should the displacing fluid be to match the mobility ratio. The current heuristics suggest that polymer flooding should be applied in reservoirs with oil viscosities between 10 and 150 cP (Taber et al. 1997).. The key factor limiting the recommended range is that for oil viscosities greater than 150 cP, the injected-water-viscosity values required for a favorable mobility ratio correspond to prohibitively low values of polymer injectivity. In addition, pumping high-viscosity displacing fluids tends to lead to clogging in oil wells, which results in a major economic well operating loss. One potential solution is to use displacement fluids with an adjustable viscosity, with the fluid having a low viscosity at the injection site and a high viscosity upon reaching the oil ...

N2 - The steady and dynamic shear viscosity of fish muscle protein paste obtained from Alaska pollock surimi at 95%, 90%, 85%, 80%, and 75% of moisture contents were measured in the temperature range of 5°C to 20°C. To estimate the steady shear viscosity at high shear rate from dynamic shear viscosity, the modified Cox-Merz rule was applied by introducing a frequency shift factor. The concentration dependence of zero-shear viscosity showed power-law dependence with an exponent of 3.5, and the universal behavior of viscosity at different protein concentrations was observed by a introducing reduced variables. The Carreau model was applied to describe the shear- thinning behavior of the surimi paste, and the model parameters estimated empirically showed moisture content dependence. The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationships between parameters of HRV,and red blood cell (RBC) aggregation and deformability, in older women with type 2 diabetes. Twenty women (age 69 ᠲ yr) with uncomplicated type 2 diabetes and twenty controls (age 69 ᠳ yr) participated in the study. Beat-to-beat cardiac (RR) intervals over 5 min were analysed for HRV parameters in the time and frequency domains. Blood was sampled for RBC deformability, as well as RBC aggregation in two suspending mediums: haematocrit adjusted plasma and 3% dextran 70. RBC aggregation was increased and HRV was impaired for those with type 2 diabetes when compared with control. RBC aggregation was negatively related to low frequency power of HRV, and was positively related to high frequency power of HRV, for subjects with type 2 diabetes. RBC ...
We all know that viscosity is a critical property of hydraulic oil as it can impact on the performance and efficiency of entire systems, along with the wear rates of specific components such as pumps and valves. However, measuring or calculating the viscosity of your hydraulic oil at different pressures has never been the most straightforward of tasks. Thankfully, this is now set to change with the introduction of Webtecs new hydraulic oil viscosity calculator, which is now available online.. Hydraulic fluid suppliers provide oils with different viscosities. These oils are most-often badged in terms of their ISO number or grade, where common grades for hydraulic circuits include ISO 32, 46 and 68. Using our app, engineers simply select the oil being used, along with the system temperature (°C) and pressure (bar), hit the submit button and up pops the viscosity (cSt). Hydraulic measurement and control has never been easier.. If you want to see the effects on viscosity of fluctuations in ...

Usually, when calculating the blood flow in cerebral arteries and intracranial aneurysms, blood is modeled as a Newtonian fluid, neglecting its shear-thinning behavior. Since flow diverting devices slow down the blood flow in the aneurysm sack, the accuracy of this assumption had to be reviewed. A Carreau Yasuda model is introduced as a non-Newtonian model for blood viscosity. CFD simulations of an intracranial sidewall aneurysm treated with an endovascular device using a Newtonian and the non-Newtonian model have been performed and the results of the comparison between the blood viscosity models are presented. Our example found the Newtonian model overestimating the effect of the flow diverting stent by up to 6%, thus, it seems not to be sufficient for calculations past endovascular devices.. ...
Waldenstroms macroglobulinemia (WM) is a rare chronic B-cell lymphoproliferative disorder characterized by macroglobulin (immunoglobulin M; IgM) paraproteinemia. The clinical manifestations associated with WM can be related to those of direct organ tumor infiltration, hyperviscosity and tissue deposition of IgM. Treatment must be individualized according to the nature of the clinical manifestations. Plasmapheresis has a role in patients whose symptoms are caused by increased serum viscosity. Chlorambucil was first used with response rates varying between 31% and 72% and is now probably the most commonly used oral agent. Melphalan and cyclophosphamide may have similar clinical efficacy. The addition of corticosteroids does not seem to increase response rates and the use of combination chemotherapy in the first-line setting is not recommended. Fludarabine and cladribine are cross-resistant and induce a response in 30%-60% of patients who have had prior therapy with alkylating agents and as many ...

Our study is the first to suggest that SCT could worsen the vascular dysfunction among patients with T2DM. In addition, we found elevated blood viscosity and oxidative stress in patients with T2DM-SCT, which, in association with the vascular dysfunction, could increase the risk for vascular disorders in this population.. The principal aim of this study was to test whether the presence of SCT could worsen the vascular dysfunction and the biological abnormalities observed in patients with T2DM. Despite the fact that individuals with T2DM were older than subjects with T2DM-SCT, their vascular function was less altered. PWV, FMD, and corrected FMD were blunted in subjects with T2DM-SCT compared with the three other groups, demonstrating increased arterial stiffness and a loss of vascular reactivity in these subjects, which, in other diseases, have been shown to increase the risks for cardiovascular morbidity and/or mortality (27,28). In agreement with this assumption, a higher number of participants ...

Central retinal vein occlusions occur when a thrombotic obstruction occurs in the central vein of the retina and is essentially a blockage of the portion of the circulation that drains the retina of blood. The result is a sudden complete retinal hemorrhage (bleeding) throughout the four quadrants of the retina, as well as optic nerve disc edema (swelling) and dilated, tortuous retinal veins. The major symptom you as patient will experience is a sudden complete loss of vision in one or both eyes.. Reasons for developing CRVO may involve abnormal blood flow or blood constituents (blood plasma, erythrocytes, leukocytes, and thrombocytes), atherosclerosis and vessel anomalies. Properties of blood and the vein itself act in concert to cause thrombus formation, which impedes venous blood flow from the retina.. Other associated risk factors include systemic diseases like Hypertension, Glaucoma, Diabetes mellitus, Cardiovascular disease, Anemia, Carotid artery obstruction, Hyperviscosity syndromes, ...

TY - JOUR. T1 - Red blood cell mechanics and functional capillary density.. AU - Secomb, T. W.. AU - Hsu, R.. PY - 1995. Y1 - 1995. N2 - The relationship between red blood cell mechanics and functional capillary density is examined. Experimental observations of capillary recruitment in skeletal muscle have shown sequential recruitment and derecruitment of capillaries fed by a single arteriole, implying that flow may cease in individual capillaries at small nonzero driving pressures. Such behavior is not expected in uniform blood-perfused tubes, but could occur when moving red cells encounter geometrical irregularities in capillaries. From known elastic properties of the red cell membrane, a lower bound is computed for the pressure required to sustain red cell motion in irregular capillaries. This may be an underestimate of the pressure required, because it neglects the viscous resistance of the red cell membrane when it undergoes transient deformations. Simulations including membrane viscosity ...

The pressure-viscosity coefficient, α, is a measure of the pressure dependence of the viscosity of the liquid in elastohydrodynamic lubrication (EHL). There seems to be confusion around the understanding of the pressure-viscosity response in the inlet zone. In this paper the values of α were obtained from measurements of viscosity as a function of pressure and offers a understanding on the piezoviscous effect at various inlet pressures for those liquids. Moreover, the viscosities of several commercial engine oils and laboratory blends of mineral and synthetic base oils with polymer additives were measured at pressures up to 1 GPa and at temperatures of 40°, 75°, and 100°C. It was observed in some of these materials The significant changes within viscosity are temperature- and pressure-dependent. Analysis of the experimental results indicated that the solidification (significant increase viscosity) is due to liquid-solid phase transitions occurring in the lubricants polymer additives. Thus, this
Blood flow partitioning at an arteriolar bifurcation could lead to spatio-temporal variations in cell-free layer formation in the upstream and downstream vessels of the bifurcation. To investigate this effect, we quantitatively analyzed characteristics of the cell-free layer in the vicinity of an arteriolar bifurcation in the rat cremaster muscle in normal physiological flow conditions. To simulate hemorheological relevance to humans, red blood cell aggregation was elevated by infusion of Dextran 500 to levels seen in humans in normal states. Spatial variations of the layer width were observed in both the parent and larger daughter vessels. A more pronounced attenuation of the layer width was generally observed in the parent vessel at its wall adjacent to the side branch than at its opposite wall. A thicker layer width was consistently found at the opposite than adjacent wall of the larger daughter vessel. Accordingly, large asymmetries of the layer widths could be developed on opposite sides of ...
Viscosity can control various magmatic processes and varies by orders of magnitude as a function of temperature, composition and dissolved volatiles. There is no predictive model for the viscosity of dacitic liquids, which are involved in explosive volcanism. This study investigated the effects of variable composition and water content on dacitic liquids. Ten dacitic glasses were synthesized with varying degrees of polymerization. Hydrous glasses were made with water contents varying up to 5 wt.%. The viscosity was measured using parallel plate and concentric cylinder viscometry. TVF equations, of the form log [eta] = A + B/(T-C), allow prediction of hydrous liquid viscosities at magmatic temperatures. At 1100K, liquids containing 1 and 5 wt.% dissolved water are about 5 and 7 orders of magnitude less viscous than anhydrous liquids, respectively. The results demonstrate that varying polymerization state of the liquids has a smaller effect on viscosity than water content and temperature ...
Experiments were carried out in vitro with three viscous polysaccharides (guar gum, pectin, and carboxymethylcellulose (CMC)) of similar initial viscosity submitted to conditions that mimic events occurring in the stomach and duodenum, and their viscosity in these situations was compared to their actions on postprandial hyperglycemia in normal human subjects. Guar gum showed greater viscosity than the other gums during acidification and/or alkalinization and also showed larger effects on plasma glucose levels (35% reduction in maximum rise in plasma glucose) and on the total area under the curve of plasma glucose (control: 20,314 ± 1007 mg dl-1 180 min-1 vs guar gum: 18,277 ± 699 mg dl-1 180 min-1, P<0.01). Pectin, which showed a marked reduction in viscosity at 37oC and after events mimicking those that occur in the stomach and duodenum, did not have a significant effect on postprandial hyperglycemia. The performance of viscosity and the glycemia response to CMC were at an intermediate ...

Viscosity coefficients at about 2000 K were 15-24 mPa s at 2.7-5.0 GPa, and 4-9 mPa s at 5.0-7.0 GPa. Drastic decrease was found at around 5 GPa, at which stable solid phase below the melting temperatures change from delta (bcc) to gamma (fcc) phases. The observation indicates the possibility that the structural change in the molten Fe occurs in a narrow pressure interval (1 GPa) at the similar condition with the phase transformation in the solid.. TY - JOUR. T1 - An ex-vivo model of shear-rate-based activation of blood coagulation. AU - Ranucci, Marco. AU - Ranucci, Matteo. AU - Baryshnikova, Ekaterina. PY - 2018/3/1. Y1 - 2018/3/1. N2 - The study presents a model of shear-stress-based platelet activation. Twenty-eight patients (22 free from anticoagulants and major antiplatelet agents, and six under the effects of P2Y12 platelet inhibitors) participated. The main purpose was to verify the hypothesis that a model of shear-dependent blood activation does not require artificial activators to trigger clot formation. Whole blood collected from the patients received platelet function tests [ADPtest and thrombin receptor-Activating peptide (TRAP)test] and was tested with a cone-on-plate viscosimeter at a shear rate of 100 sS-1. Changes in blood viscosity were characterized by a time-To-gel point (TGP), a maximum clot viscosity and a steady clot viscosity (SCV). In patients free from major antiplatelet effects, the TGP was 180 s (interquartile ...

A cellular medium is highly viscoelastic in nature. To understand the viscoelastic nature of a medium, we have taken the first step at developing a new simple approach to quantitatively measure the viscosity of a water-glycerol mixture medium using the optical tweezers technique. Also further theoretical approaches have been developed to model the viscosity behavior. In our optical tweezers system, the position of a trapped bead was measured using a position sensing diode with 40kHz acquisition rate. By using a Lorentzian fit to the Power Spectrum of the position signal, the corner frequency was determined. At constant laser power and at constant bead radius, the trap stiffness is assumed to remain the same for small change in volume concentration of glycerol in a water-glycerol medium, indicating that the change in corner frequency is solely dependent on the medium. Hence, we determined the viscosity of the water-glycerol medium by comparing to the corner frequency of a known viscosity substance.
The relationship of the microstructure of supercooled, highly viscous glycerol to the temperature dependence of its density, thermal expansion coefficient, and shear viscosity are discussed. The character of this temperature dependence at the transition from low viscosity state to the solid amorphous state solidified state without nuclei is described with help of function psi, which can be interpreted as the effective number of degrees of freedom responsible for the change of viscosity of glycerol over a broad range; these degrees of freedom are those related to the alpha-relaxation process. It is shown that the change in effective activation energy of the viscosity is completely determined by the parameter psi. The change in the shear viscosity of glycerol due to the influence of the solid-phase nuclei is considered. It is shown that the introduction of the parameter phi, equal to the specific volume occupied by the nuclei of the solid phase, together with psi provides a natural explanation ...

The mechanism of action of vinpocetine is composed of several elements: it improves cerebral blood flow and metabolism, has a beneficial effect on the rheological properties of blood. The neuroprotective action is realized by reducing the adverse cytotoxic effect of excitatory amino acids. Improves the exchange of serotonin and norepinephrine in the brain, it stimulates the noradrenergic neurotransmitter systems and has an antioxidant effect. It improves the microcirculation in the brain by inhibiting platelet aggregation, reducing the pathologically increased blood viscosity, increase the deformability of red blood cells and the inhibition of the reuptake of adenoeina; promotes oxygen transfer into the cells by reducing the affinity of erythrocytes thereto. Selectively increases cerebral blood flow by reducing the cerebral vascular resistance without a significant impact on system performance circulatory (blood pressure (BP), cardiac output, heart rate, total peripheral vascular resistance); It ...

In contrast to recently drawn conclusions,31 this systematic review and meta-analysis invites further investigation into the merits of prophylactic transfusion in pregnant women with SCD. Although constrained by methodologic limitations of original study designs, the analysis suggested a reduction in vaso-occlusive pain episodes, maternal mortality, overall pulmonary complications, pulmonary embolism, neonatal mortality, and preterm birth, favoring institution of prophylactic transfusion.. The potential of prophylactic transfusion to reduce adverse pregnancy outcomes in women with SCD stems from its capacity to remedy SCD-driven physiologic derangements through (1) correction of anemia, enhancing RBC oxygen-carrying capacity; (2) reduction in the proportion of sickle hemoglobin carrying erythrocytes, diminishing vaso-occlusive episodes; (3) reduction in blood viscosity, if provided via RBC exchange transfusion; and to a lesser extent, (4) suppression of endogenous erythropoiesis.32,33 Although ...

A rotational viscometer is disclosed for measuring the viscosity of a rotating fluid. The viscometer includes a measurement disk that is positioned within the rotating fluid and is interconnected via a shaft with a measurement arm mounted within a housing. A light source is mounted within the housing and emits a beam of light onto one or more light receivers. The light receivers provide an output signal that is a function of the amount of light received. An end of the measurement arm is movably disposed between the light source and the light receivers. Pivoting of the measurement arm controls the amount of light received by the light receivers. A signal processor receives the output signals from the light receivers and determines a restorative signal therefrom. The restorative signal is provided to a balance coil which is located adjacent a permanent magnet. The balance coil generates an electromagnetic field as a, function of the restorative signal. An adjustment shaft has one end engaged with the
The dynamics of drop formation and pinch-off have been investigated for a series of low viscosity elastic fluids possessing similar shear viscosities, but differing substantially in elastic properties. On initial approach to the pinch region, the viscoelastic fluids all exhibit the same global necking behaviour that is observed for a Newtonian fluid of equivalent shear viscosity. For these low viscosity dilute polymer solutions, inertial and capillary forces form the dominant balance in this potential flow regime, with the viscous force being negligible. The approach to the pinch point, which corresponds to the point of rupture for a Newtonian fluid, is extremely rapid in such solutions, with the sudden increase in curvature producing very large extension rates at this location. In this region the polymer molecules are significantly extended, causing a localised increase in the elastic stresses, which grow to balance the capillary pressure. This prevents the necked fluid from breaking off, as ...
The viscosity of ointments and lotions, for example, has an impact on several stages in the production: It must be possible to pump them, pack them, and squeeze them out of the packing easily, and also to apply them on the target body areas. To be able to forecast the viscosity during production and at application, the viscosity at different speeds/shear rates has to be determined with a rotational viscometer. Ointments have to show shear-thinning flow behavior, because the viscosity has to decrease when a force is applied, e.g. during squeezing it out of a tube or applying it to the skin. In order to prevent liquids like ointments from flowing out of the tube when no force is applied, the ...
