Serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP or SPE) is a laboratory test that examines specific proteins in the blood called globulins. The most common indications for a serum protein electrophoresis test are to diagnose or monitor multiple myeloma, a monoclonal gammopathy of uncertain significance (MGUS), or further investigate a discrepancy between a low albumin and a relatively high total protein. Unexplained bone pain, anemia, proteinuria, renal insufficiency, and hypercalcemia are also signs of multiple myeloma, and indications for SPE. Blood must first be collected, usually into an airtight vial or syringe. Electrophoresis is a laboratory technique in which the blood serum (the fluid portion of the blood after the blood has clotted) is applied to an acetate membrane soaked in a liquid buffer., to a buffered agarose gel matrix, or into liquid in a capillary tube, and exposed to an electric current to separate the serum protein components into five major fractions by size and electrical charge: ...

Clinical pathology offers agarose gel serum protein electrophoresis as a test to investigate hyperproteinemia due to hyperglobulinemia. This test can be performed in any species, however we do not have reference intervals for all species. This test can be performed in any species, however we do not have reference intervals for all species. Protein electrophoresis separates serum proteins into different fractions - albumin and α-, β- and γ-globulins - based on their size, shape and charge (Figure 1). The acute phase proteins migrate in the α-and β- regions of the electrophoretogram and the immunoglobulins comprise the bulk of the γ-region, although IgA, IgM and specific subclasses of IgG can migrate in the late β-region. The shape of the electrophoretogram tracing and the quantity of proteins in β- and γ-fractions, provides information about the underlying disease. In healthy animals, there is a mixture of immunoglobulins, which produces a small broad curve in the γ-region (Figure 1). ...

Objective. To describe the effect of HIV serostatus on serum proteins, serum protein electrophoresis (SPEP) patterns and monoclonal bands. Setting. Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital, Durban. Design. Retrospective, anonymous analysis of routine laboratory results. Results. Monoclonal bands were not increased in HIV-positive patients, who were younger and had increased polyclonal and oligoclonal bands and total proteins when compared with HIV-negative patients.
Alpha globulins are serum proteins that have the most rapid migration during electrophoresis. This subgroup of globulins is divided into faster and slower alpha1 and alpha2-globulins.Proteins are the most abundant compounds in your serum. Amino acids are the building blocks of all proteins. In turn proteins are the building blocks of all cells and body tissues. They are the basic components of enzymes, many hormones, antibodies and clotting agents. Proteins act as transport substances for hormones, vitamins, minerals, lipids and other materials. In addition, proteins help balance the osmotic pressure of the blood and tissue.Medical Tests Analyzer labtest bloodtest What does the test result mean?
Protein electrophoresis is the most frequent measurement of the primary blood proteins: albumin and globulins (alpha1, alpha2, beta, and gamma). Under the influence of an electrical field, at a pH of 8.6, the proteins separated by an electrical charge, molecular size, and shape. Plotted on treated paper, the serum proteins form five homogeneous bands of the relative protein values in percentages. These percentages, when multiplied by the total protein concentration, reflect the absolute value of each protein. High-resolution electrophoresis allows the detection of additional bands or zones. Immunoelectrophoresis may be performed to identify the nature of suspicious bands or to monitor the progress of gammopathies, disturbances in immunoglobulin synthesis. The most rapid form of unknown band identification combines high-resolution electrophoresis with immunoprecipitation. Certain protein electrophoresis band patterns are characteristic of specific disease states. ...

The immunoglobulins or antibodies are generally the only proteins present in the normal gamma region. Of note, any protein migrating in the gamma region will be stained and appear on the gel, which may include protein contaminants, artifacts, or certain medications. Depending on whether an agarose or capillary method is used, interferences vary. Immunoglobulins consist of heavy chains (IgA, IgM, IgG, IgE and IgD) and light chains (kappa and lambda). A normal gamma zone should appear as a smooth blush, or smear, with no asymmetry or sharp peaks.[12] The gamma globulins may be elevated (hypergammaglobulinemia), decreased (hypogammaglobulinaemia), or have an abnormal peak or peaks. Note that immunoglobulins may also be found in other zones; IgA typically migrates in the beta-gamma zone, and in particular, pathogenic immunoglobulins may migrate anywhere, including the alpha regions. Hypogammaglobulinaemia is easily identifiable as a slump or decrease in the gamma zone. It is normal in infants. ...

Background: Albumin/Globulin ratio (AG) typically declines in HIV infection due to excess immunoglobulin production by hyperactive B-cells and improves with antiretroviral therapy (ART) but may not fully reverse. The significance of AG in earlier stages of HIV disease is unclear. We compared AG with levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) and D-dimer, biomarkers associated with mortality in HIV infection, before and after ART initiation among participants in the U.S. Military HIV Natural History Study (NHS). Methods: 194 persons in the NHS, a cohort of US military personnel and beneficiaries living with HIV, were retrospectively studied. Frozen stored sera were used to measure levels of IL-6 and D-dimer with assays validated for serum at two time points: ≥6 months post-HIV seroconversion but prior to ART initiation, and ≥6 months post-ART with viral suppression (, 50 copies/ml) on two successive evaluations. Laboratory values were analyzed using Spearman s rank correlation and Mann-Whitney U test. ...

A prospective study involving 77 neonatal calves was carried out to determine which factors in management, physical status and laboratory findings at time of presentation to the clinic might help to predict wether a calf shall die or survive. Calf history and physical examination where done using a standard protocol . At presentation blood samples were collected for blood gas analysis, hematology and biochemistry • Twenty four hours later after the calf had been rehydrated a blood sample was collected for serum protein electrophoresis Calves that died were taken for necropsy and histopathology, bacteriology and virology performed on standard range of tissues The calves that later died had significantly lower segmented neutrophils, serum total proteins, body temperature, and serum calcium level and higher serum phosphorus level. It was concluded that serum total protein and body temperature may help predict wether calves shall die or survive ...

If I remember correctly, my instructions were to stop taking them when I felt dizzy or if my blood pressure dropped below 110/70. That was/is my baseline anyhow. I didnt ever get that low, I was making 130/80 on meds with trace protein at 6 weeks. I still got to come off my meds though. I stopped them for three days and my bp stayed at that level. I was still spilling protein and the nephrologist said that he thought my bp would come down further on its own once that cleared up. It did. So Im thinking that you are well in the zone for getting rid of those meds. I felt like a little old lady filling my prescription.....[xx ...

Saturday, 03-10-2020 @4:30pm. Borussia Dortmund were made to pay for not taking their chances in a shock 2-0 defeat to Augsburg last week and they could see less of goal in this weeks home tie with Freiburg.. The Black Forest visitors are on a good run of form in the Bundesliga, with their only defeat in their last seven games coming against Bayern Munich.. Freiburg have started the season with a win over Stuttgart and a draw with Wolfsburg and their more conservative approach could help them avoid defeat against Dortmund.. Lucien Favres men suffered crushing home defeats to Hoffenheim (4-0) and Mainz (2-0) at the end of last season and the loss to Augsburg emphasised that there are defensive issues which need resolving.. Freiburg may not be the sharpest going forwards but if they can nick a goal, they have the defensive resolve to see the game out.. Freiburg have lost only one of their previous seven Bundesliga fixtures. Borussia Dortmund have lost three of their previous five Bundesliga ...

Investigations were conducted to detect serum protein variant systems in mice and to define their genetic control. Three systems were detected. A pair of codominant alleles at a locus in the second linkage group controls electrophoretically different transferrin types. An electrophoretic difference among inbred lines in the presence or absence of a prealbumin is controlled by a single autosomal locus without dominance. A serologically detected system is controlled by a single locus closely linked or identical to the H-2 locus in the ninth linkage group. The variant component seems to be an [alpha]-globulin of high molecular weight. The principal difference between serum types is quantitative; qualitative differences are not excluded. The serum component is not detectably related serologically to H-2 erythrocyte antigens. The effects of development, pregnancy and stress upon these serum components were studied. Using these three serum variants as markers, the sera of homologous radiation chimeras ...
