Transmission of dengue virus (DENV) through blood transfusion has been documented and hence screening for DENV during blood donation has been recently recommended by the American Association of Blood Banks and Centres of Disease Control and Prevention. DENV is endemic in the Western province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and serotypes 1, 2 and 3, but not 4, have been detected. However, little is known regarding the rates of DENV during blood donation in the kingdom. The aim of this study was therefore to measure the prevalence of dengue virus and its serotypes in eligible Saudi blood donors in the endemic Western region of KSA. This was a cross-sectional study and serum samples were collected from 910 eligible Saudi male blood donors. DENV IgM and IgG antibodies were measured serologically by ELISA while viral serotypes were detected by a single step IVD CE certified multiplex RT-PCR kit. The overall prevalence was 39 and 5.5% for IgG+ and IgM+, respectively. There were 12 (1.3%) with exclusively

This study aimed to determine the importance of raised antibodies to Helicobacter pylori in an asymptomatic population. A total of 128 asymptomatic blood donors who were seropositive for H pylori and consented to endoscopy were investigated. These subjects were from a population of 1010 blood donors screened for antibodies to H pylori. A questionnaire was completed to determine if any subjects had complained of symptoms, and they subsequently had endoscopy. Altogether 121 of 128 were positive for H pylori by histology and urease test and/or culture and all 121 had chronic active gastritis on histology. Twenty five of these subjects had peptic ulcer (20 duodenal, five gastric), a further 21 had erosive duodenitis, and two were found to have gastric cancer. H pylori associated peptic ulcer disease and duodenitis occur more frequently than previously recognised and this suggests that H pylori infection, even if asymptomatic, is of far greater clinical relevance than originally thought.. ...

Introduction: Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection is a public health problem worldwide, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Objective: to compare the epidemiological, clinical and biological characteristics of chronic HBV and HIV infection in blood donors at the National Center for Blood Transfusion (NCBT) in Bangui. Patients and Methods: This was an 8-month analytical cross-sectional study from August 10, 2011 to April 9, 2012. During this study, we consecutively enrolled consenting blood donors of both sexes in which the search for HBsAg and HIV infection was carried out. Results: During the study period, 850 blood donors were collected. HBsAg was found in 142 donors (16.7%), of whom 55 blood donors (6.5%) were coinfected with HIV. On the other hand, HIV serology was positive in 77 blood donors (9.1%) including 55 co-infected (6.5%) with HBV. In order to better compare the risk factors, we have not included HIV-HBV coinfected patients. Only 795 blood donors were
Opportunities to donate blood are coming to Grays Harbor as the American Red Cross looks to avoid a shortage by filling missing blood types.. The Red Cross is urging donors of all blood types to give now to help prevent delays in medical care this summer.. The American Red Crosss Missing Types campaign is raising awareness of the need for more blood donors.. While thousands of blood donors have answered the call to fill the Missing Types, including types A, B, and O, more donors are needed now to help ensure patients dont have to wait for blood products. The American Red Cross says that during the summer, especially around holidays like Independence Day, donations often dont keep pace with patient needs. Make an appointment to donate blood by downloading the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visiting RedCrossBlood.org or calling 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).. A transfusion transmissible infection (TTI) is any infection that is transmissible from person to- person through parenteral administration of blood or blood products. The magnitude of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTI) varies from country to country depending on TTIs load in that particular population. Measuring their severity, WHO (World Health Organization) has recommended pre-transfusion blood test for Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and Syphilis as mandatory. The aim of the current study was to assess the trend and prevalence of TTI among blood donors in Jijiga Blood Bank between 2010 and 2013. A Retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted by reviewing the records from 2010 to 2013 at Jijiga Blood Bank. All blood donors who presented to the blood bank and screened for TTI during the study period were included. The data was collected, entered and analyzed using Epi Info 3.5.1 & Microsoft Excel 2007. The descriptive statistics were

It turned out that Jai, who was a Thalassemic patient since he was just a year old, had contracted HIV through blood transfusion at the Junagadh Civil Hospital. And it wasnt just him; 35 other Thalassemic children being given transfusion at the same hospital had become HIV-infected. Of them, eight died.. All our happiness died with our child. Who do we live for now? said 50-year-old Rafeeq Ranava, Jais father, a daily-wage labourer in Junagadh.. An IndiaSpend investigation, through a series of Right to Information (RTI) requests, has revealed that 14,474 cases of HIV through blood transfusion have been reported in India over the last seven years. It also revealed that the Indian government has yet to order a study or inquiry into this medical crisis that puts millions of lives at risk.. Not just that, there has been a 10 per cent rise in the number of such cases over the last one year - from 1,424 in 2014-15 to 1,559 in 2015-16 - according to documents obtained from that National AIDS ...

In some of the countries, transfusion of infected blood or blood products is a serious concern because the prevalence of HIV and hepatitis B and C in the blood donor populations is higher than the prevalence in the global donor population. Screened blood units have higher rates of most transfusion transmitted infections (TTIs) than the general global donor population and, according to CDC reports, the presence of TTIs remains the primary reason for discarding donated blood. Lack of safe blood has also been directly implicated in HIV transmission in Central Asia and other countries.. Safe blood is a recognized priority in target countries and a key element in their fight against HIV/AIDS and efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals, but the overall regulatory framework for health, including the lack of clear legal and political accountability, is still evolving in each country. This poses a particularly serious challenge for effectively addressing blood safety.. ...

I have now to consider the complaints referred to by the 1stRespondent. There is nothing to show that those matters werebrought to the notice of the 2nd Respondent, and it cannot beassumed that he acted on those matters. Further, the Petitionerwas not given an opportunity of submitting an explanation in regardto those matters. Quite apart from any explanation which thePetitioner might have given, certian comments are unavoidable.Allegations of fraud and misappropriation of Samurdhi funds wereundoubtedly serious - but if they rendered him unfit to serve asbook-keeper at the Central Blood Bank how could he have beenallowed to serve elsewhere? The NHS Blood and Transplant Authority, the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service and the Wellcome Trust have jointly announced a pioneering project to create a potentially unlimited supply of blood for transfusions using embryonic stem cells (ES cells) derived from surplus IVF embryos which are donated for research. The synthetic blood could eventually mean that clinical services would no long need to rely on obtaining a fresh supply of blood from donors since, in theory, a single embryo could supply the nations needs.. The multi-million pound project will focus on identifying ES cells that produce the o-negative blood group. Although present in just seven per cent of the population, this blood group is in high demand because it can be transfused into anyone, regardless of their blood-type.. The project will be led by Professor Marc Turner, scientific director of the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service. Professor Turner told the BBC: We should have proof of principle in the ...
Teamsters members are critical to health care, working in hospitals, nursing homes and health care facilities, including the American Red Cross, where over 1,300 Teamsters are employed.. As blood drive cancellations increase due to coronavirus concerns, healthy individuals are needed to give blood or platelets to help patients in need. The American Red Cross has reported that tens of thousands of much-need blood donations have gone uncollected as organizations and businesses that hold blood drives have temporarily closed during this pandemic.. The Red Cross emphasizes that donating blood is a safe process and people should not hesitate to give or receive blood. The humanitarian organization is also taking additional precautions, including checking the temperature of staff and donors before entering a drive to make sure they are healthy and spacing donor beds further apart. Red Cross employees follow strict safety procedures, including wearing gloves and changing them often, wiping down all ...
DULUTH, Minn. - If youre eligible to donate blood, the American Red Cross is in need of your help this winter.. The American Red Cross urges people to share their good health and resolve to give blood regularly, beginning in January with National Blood Donor Month.. January is known as National Blood Donor Month, which officials with the American Red Cross say is the perfect time to resolve to be a regular blood donor and help save lives.. Extreme winter weather and seasonal illnesses often make it difficult for the American Red Cross to maintain a sufficient blood supply at this time of year.. According to Blood Drive Coordinator Amy Kranig, during the weeks of Christmas and New Years, about 500 fewer blood drives were hosted by volunteer sponsor groups than required to meet patient needs.. Many groups postpone blood drives during the winter holidays when travel and holiday activities may make it challenging for many donors to give. In fact, AAA estimated that a record 115.6 million Americans ...

As of Saturday, March 20, the Rhode Island Blood Center will be pausing collections of convalescent plasma. Fortunately, with more people getting vaccinated each day and hospitalizations continuing to decline, the current supply of convalescent plasma is sufficient to meet the needs of patients and hospitals. We are hopeful that the vaccination rates will continue to reduce the need for this product, but we stand ready to resume collections if necessary. The Rhode Island Blood Center began collecting convalescent plasma in April of 2020 at the height of the pandemic. We facilitated 767 convalescent plasma donations that resulted in over 1,900 units of plasma. Through New York Blood Center Enterprises, our network of blood centers, we collect nearly 100,000 donations that were distributed to more than 40 states and to several other countries. This would not have been possible without a giving community of donors who recovered from COVID-19 and were willing to share their plasma to help someone ...
When disaster strikes in the United States, there is one organization that is on everyones mind, the American Red Cross. It has operated for over a hundred years on the simple premise of delivering aid to those in need. The organization does this by reacting effectively and efficiently to natural and man-made disasters and delivering humanitarian aid to those affected. In recent years, though, the American Red Cross has come under scrutiny for mismanagement and ineffective disaster relief. The purpose of this paper is to use ethical standards of the nonprofit sector to evaluate and explain the performance of the American Red Cross in recent years. Considering outside factors like climate change and public opinion, a conclusion can be drawn.
Facebook had in October launched a new blood donations feature, starting in India, to make it easier for people to donate blood.. There are now more than 4 million blood donors signed up on Facebook in India, said Naomi Gleit, Facebooks vice-president of social good.. In addition to enabling people in need to connect to blood donors, our tools also allow organisations to connect to donors more efficiently, she said in a blog post.. Gleit said hospitals, blood banks and non-profits can create voluntary blood donation events on Facebook, and nearby donors are notified of the opportunities to donate blood.. In early 2018, we will expand blood donations to Bangladesh, where, like India, there are thousands of posts from people looking for blood donors every week, she added.. Facebook users in India had crossed the 240 million mark in July, surpassing the 240 million in the US, according to a media report.. As of September, Facebook had 1.37 billion daily - and 2.07 billion monthly - active ...
To carry out in vitro research procedures on plasma or leukocyte components of whole blood, it is often necessary to obtain larger quantities of plasma or leukocytes than can be safely obtained by simple phlebotomy. These components can be easily and safely obtained using a well-established standard apheresis procedure that is in common use at the National Institutes of Health Apheresis Unit. This protocol describes the implementation of the same apheresis procedure at the National Blood Transfusion Center in Bamako, Mali. This is not a research protocol per se, but rather an adjunct protocol which allows healthy donors 18-55 years of age to undergo apheresis. Subjects must already be enrolled in another protocol which has been approved by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases Institutional Review Board and the Faculty of Medicine, Pharmacy, and Odonto-Stomatology Ethics Committee ...

HUH has been collaborating with ZNBTS since 2008. During the startup of a new project in 2014 between HUH and NRCSCBTS, several strengths and weaknesses was revealed in the national services that were different from ZNBTS. The current project started in 2014 and was aiming to strengthen the blood transfusion services at KCH with funds from a private donation.. In 2016 a triangular collaboration between Norway, Zanzibar and Nepal was established, with an exchange of personnel between all three. This would create a unique opportunity for ZNBTS and NRCSCBTS to learn from each other a setting where many of the operational challenges are the same. With the link to a modern transfusion service at HUH, and the hospital setting at KCH, this is assumed to model future capacity strengthening projects in transfusion medicine.. Zanzibar National Blood Transfusion Services (ZNBTS) has a highly developed and well-functioning quality management system, and works hard to increase total volume of blood units ...
Such was the situation in which Neil Reynolds and his team found themselves when they were project-managing the new £6m, 4,000-user, 650-million-data-item National Blood Service IT system, Pulse. Everyone - Computer Weekly included - seemed to be baying for their blood. That was because the prognosis for Pulse was not good. First, the project had to integrate and replace 12 existing - and different - systems from nine different suppliers, spread across 12 regions. Secondly, it had to face internal political battles as the regional authorities resisted centralisation. Thirdly, because it was the National Blood Service, it was literally a life-or-death system. And fourthly, it was the first public sector IT project to enjoy the Private Finance Initiative (PFI). Before work could start, there were delays. Not only did PFI mean that the 20-page business case had to be rewritten as 400 pages, but the contract took an age to award. Then the hard work started, says Reynolds. The strategy was one ...
Iván García, 6 March 2017 - A sloppy piece of cardboard painted with a crayon announces the sale of a discolored house in the neighborhood of La Vibora, 30 minutes by car south of Havana.. If Amanda, the owner, who is raving poor, manages to sell the house for the equivalent of 40,000 dollars, she intends to buy two small apartments, one for her daughter and the other for her son.. The house urgently needs substantial repairs. But Amandas family doesnt have the money needed to undertake the work. Frank, 36, her son, is the custodian of a secondary school and earns a monthly salary of 365 Cuban pesos, around 17 dollars, and to help support the family, hes a blood donor.. The Cuban regime doesnt pay for these donations. Frank, who gives blood up to two times a month, should receive some 10 pounds of meat, a half-kilo of fish and three pounds of chicken.. There are always delays. Its a pain. In every municipality theres a warehouse assigned to distribute this food to the blood donors. But ...
Since the discovery of blood circulation and transfusion, there has been an insatiable demand for voluntary blood donations throughout the world. However, gathering blood donors has never been easy because eligible donors constitute only a fraction of the general population and are often reluctant to donate. This is especially challenging in underprivileged countries of sub-Saharan Africa such as Malawi whose nationally run blood transfusion service struggles to maintain hospital blood banks. As a result, hospitals turn to their local communities for directed donations. A retrospective analysis from January 2014 to June 2016 of directed blood donor data from two hospitals in the Kasungu District of Malawi was conducted. The analysis of 2134 donations was carried out with respect to sex, age, hemoglobin concentration, blood group, and presence of transfusion-transmissible infections. On average, donors were 30 years of age and predominately male. Blood group O+ constituted more than half of all directed

The American Red Cross provides most of the nations plasma products. These plasma products are provided at effective costs. These plasma products are also safe and reliable. In 1999, the Red Cross established a new management structure i.e. Baxter Biosciences instead of plasma services industry. These Baxter Biosciences usually contain plasma for the manufacturing of plasma projects.. Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT). The American Red Cross was the first charity organization to implement Nucleic Acid Testing (NAT) study. This testing is very unique for it checks for the greatest material HIV and hepatitis C (HCV). HIV and HCV test detects the generic material of transfusion-transmitted virus e.g. HIV without waiting for the body to form its antibodies which is a very great advantage.. Leukoreduction. Peoples white blood cells are able to fight viruses, bacteria and abnormal cells to prevent diseases. When leukocytes are transfused to another person they do not work, instead complications occur and ...

Blood, donated by asymptomatic donors, may contain and transmit parvovirus B19. To investigate the dynamics of parvovirus viraemia in asymptomatic blood donors, we studied the amounts of parvovirus DNA in pools of donor plasma, the prevalence of parvovirus antibodies among blood donors in relation to age, and the seasonal and year-to-year variation of the incidence of parvovirus infection in The Netherlands. The incidence of parvovirus infection follows a seasonal cycle and a cycle of several years. Among Dutch blood donors the incidence was estimated to be 0·56% per year. Forty seven out of 100 pools of 5000 plasma donations tested positive for parvovirus DNA. We inferred that the course of viraemia in asymptomatic donors shows a short peak (,109 copies parvovirus DNA/ml), followed by viraemia below 106 copies/ml for about 2 weeks.. ...

Hepatitis E virus (HEV) is a nonenveloped RNA virus causing hepatitis E worldwide. The increase in transfusion-transmitted cases of HEV infections from asymptomatic blood donors causing serious illnesses among immunosuppressed recipients has been reported in the past few years. China is one of the most prevalent regions of HEV; as a result, it is important to evaluate the risk of transfusion-transmitted HEV. A total of 1864 serum samples (including demographic characteristics) from blood donors were randomly collected from February to March 2018 in Dali city. Anti-HEV IgG, IgM and IgA antibodies and HEV antigen were examined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). HEV RNA was detected by real-time PCR. Multivariable logistic regression modelling was used to examine the risk factors associated with HEV prevalence. Overall, the positive rates of anti-HEV IgG, IgM, and IgA antibodies were 13.36% (249/1864), 1.13% (21/1864), and 1.82% (34/1864), respectively. However, none of the 1864 serum samples
Bermuda Hospitals Board (BHB) and the Bermuda Red Cross joined together today to thank blood donors in the community as part of World Blood Donor Day on Thursday 14 June and also to ask anyone interesting in donating to contact them.. There are approximately 2,000 people on the blood donor list in Bermuda, although not all are able to regularly donate. This equates to about 3% of the resident population.. We are so very grateful to our regular donors who give such a wonderful gift to the community, comments Barbara Cooper, Chairperson of the Bermuda Red Cross Blood Donor Centre. Almost 80 people joined our donor ranks following our call for help in May and we would like to thank them. Every donor makes a difference to patients´ lives.. People need blood for many different reasons, including sickle cell patients, anaemic patients, surgical patients and road traffic accident victims, explains Dr Betsie Lombard, Medical Director of Blood Transfusion Services at BHB. We would really like to ...
The South African National Blood Service, (SANBS), is a non-profit organisation that provides human blood for transfusion that operates in South Africa, with the exception of the Western Cape. The head office is in Weltevredenpark, Gauteng, near Johannesburg, but there are blood collection operations in eight of the nine provinces. Western Cape has a separate blood center, the Western Province Blood Transfusion Service. SANBS was founded in 2001 from a merger of seven blood centres, and was embroiled in controversy in 2004 over a policy of racial profiling for blood safety. SANBS collects blood from volunteer unpaid donors and processes that blood into components for transfusion. The donors are screened for health risks and tested for diseases on every donation. Not all parts of the donated blood are always used, such as with first time donors, to establish a history of negative test results in the donor before the blood is used in patients. The red blood cells from the first donation are ...

January is National Blood Donor Month. According to the American Red Cross, blood is needed every two seconds and one donation can save up to three lives.
For patients in need of blood products, the act of blood donation is a miracle and blood donors are miracle workers. This sentiment was the inspiration for Canadian Blood Services 2013 Holiday Miracle campaign.. The campaign encourages community members from coast to coast to help meet patient need by giving blood over the holidays.. Within the next few weeks, Canadian Blood Services needs to collect 480 donations from Central Alberta donors and almost 19,000 blood donations across the country. Currently more than 190 appointments are still available at the Red Deer clinic, particularly on Christmas Eve, Boxing Day and New Years Eve.. Blood is perishable, especially platelets, which are part of blood. Platelets have a shelf life of just five days. That means giving blood immediately before or after holidays, like Christmas Day or New Years Day, is critical at this time of year, said Community Development Coordinator Tanya Paul.. We need community members to rally around patients this ...

Abstract:. Blood groups are genetically determined and exhibit polymorphism where different population groups have significant difference in the frequency of each blood group. ABO blood group system and Rh blood group system both are most important for blood transfusion purposes. This study was conducted to determine the frequency of ABO and Rh blood groups in a tertiary care teaching hospital at Hyderabad. Retrospective study was conducted at blood bank and for a period of 4 years from June 2009 to May2013. Total 15,740 donors were tested by commercially available standard monoclonal antisera by slide and tube agglutination technique. Out of 15,740 donors; 15,384 (97.73%) were males and 356(2.27%) were females. The commonest blood group was O, followed by B, A, AB groups. In Rhesus grouping 15,012(95.37%) donors were Rh positive and 728(4.63%) donors were Rh negative. Majority of donors were in the age group of 21 to 40 years. The study has a significant implication in the effective management ...
We measured antibody (anti-HCV) to hepatitis C virus, which causes non-A, non-B hepatitis, by radioimmunoassay in prospectively followed transfusion recipients and their donors. Of 15 patients with chronic non-A, non-B hepatitis documented by liver biopsy, all seroconverted for the antibody; of 5 with acute resolving non-A, non-B hepatitis, 3 (60 percent) seroconverted. The development of anti-HCV was delayed (mean delay, 21.9 weeks after transfusion, or 15 weeks after the onset of clinical hepatitis) and took approximately one year in one patient. Antibody has persisted in 14 of the 15 patients with chronic disease (mean follow-up, greater than or equal to 6.9 years; maximum, greater than or equal to 12), but has disappeared in the 3 with acute resolving disease after a mean of 4.1 years. Anti-HCV was detected in samples of donor serum given to 14 (88 percent) of the 16 anti-HCV-positive patients for whom all donor samples were available. Only 33 percent of the anti-HCV-positive donors tested ...

However, cancer occurrence in transfusion recipients remains poorly characterized. METHODS: We used computerized files from Scandinavian blood banks to identify a cohort of 888,843 cancer-free recipients transfused after 1968. The recipients were followed from first registered transfusion until the date of death, emigration, cancer diagnosis, or December 31, 2002, whichever came first. Relative risks were expressed as ratios of the ...
In lieu of the disastrous damage that Hurricane Sandy brought, the Buffalo Bills and The American Red Cross need your help.. The storm caused power outages and flooding in many areas, which will most likely result in the cancellation of additional blood drives and platelet donations throughout the week.. The American Red Cross is encouraging blood and platelet donations in the wake of Sandy. Additional donors are needed to make up for the shortfall caused by the storm. Hurricane Sandy forced the cancellation of almost 360 American Red Cross blood drives in 13 states and the District of Columbia, resulting in a shortfall of nearly 12,000 blood donations thus far.. The Red Cross is encouraging blood and platelet donations in areas unaffected by Sandy and asks that community members consider donating blood in affected areas once its safe to do so.. Give blood to The American Red Cross, and help those in need. Text REDCROSS to 90999 ($10 donation) or visit www.redcross.org to make an appointment. ...

Blood transfusions are used to treat patients with serious medical conditions that cannot be corrected by other means (1). Despite the availability of certain blood substitutes that make it possible to maintain the volume or the consistency of circulating blood (2, 3), the biological activity of cellular and plasma components makes these the most efficient treatment for a number of clinical conditions (4-6).. The mission of a nations blood services is to collect and prepare safe blood products in an efficient and timely manner and to appropriately transfuse them (7). Blood services include health facilities and centers that collect, process, store, and transfuse blood and blood components. Blood services may be run by the ministry of health, the social security system, the armed forces, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations. For their part, transfusion services are part of health care facilities, usually hospitals.. The role of blood services includes educating, recruiting, ...
True to its commitment to the community of St. Lucia and in observation of World Blood Donor Day, International American University, in association with St. Jude Hospital Blood Bank Services and Victoria Hospital Blood Bank Services, will host a Mega Blood Donation Drive on Thursday, 14th June 2018. The event will begin 9.30 a.m. and will take place in front of the IAU Campus Building in Vieux Fort.. The event serves to thank voluntary, unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood and to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations to ensure the quality, safety and availability of blood and blood products for patients in need.. This is the 10th year since IAU has been hosting blood drives to observe World Blood Donor Day. In 2013, a total of 63 units of blood were donated to St. Jude Hospital Blood Bank Services and Victoria Hospital Blood Bank Services. This year the university would like to match and hopefully surpass that amount. The event is open to the public and the ...

BACKGROUND: Open simple prostatectomy has long been associated with large blood losses; hence allogeneic blood transfusion in this procedure is a standard practice world over. A review of literature suggests significant association between perioperative blood loss accompanying open simple prostatectomy and certain patient factors. The shortage of blood and blood products in our blood transfusion centres as well as the alarming risks of transfusion reactions and disease dissemination demanded a review of these factors with the aim of reducing morbidity associated with peri-operative blood loss and blood transfusion. OBJECTIVES: To assess blood loss, determine blood transfusion rate, and define some of the factors associated with peri-operative blood loss and blood transfusion in open simple prostatectomy. DESIGN : A prospective cohort study. SETTINGS: The urology units of Kenyatta National Hospital, Kenya. RESULTS: Ninety five patients who underwent open simple prostatectomy for benign prostatic ...
Montreal, January 24, 2014 - From November 25 to December 5 2013, Health Canada conducted its annual inspection of the Montreal facility as well as the Centre Laval GLOBULE Blood Donor Centre, following which their establishment licences were renewed.. One observation for the Centre Laval GLOBULE Blood Donor Centre and nine observations for the Montreal facility without a major impact on product safety were issued by the inspectors. Corrective measures have already been taken or will be taken shortly.. These results reflect once again that Héma-Québec meet the strictest standards and security measures and demonstrates that blood product, stem cells and human tissues safety is a constant priority.. Health Canada audits are designed to ensure compliance with safety measures and with the requirements stipulated in its operating licence. Inspections are conducted every year at Héma-Québecs Montréal and Québec facilities, and the GLOBULE Blood Donor Centres are closely examined every two years. ...
This November, the American Red Cross encourages eligible donors to give the perfect gift - a blood donation - to help ensure a sufficient blood supply throughout the holiday season.. A decline in donations occurs from Thanksgiving to New Years Day when donors are busy with family gatherings and travel; however, patients dont get a holiday break from needing lifesaving transfusions. In fact, every two seconds, someone in the U.S. needs blood.. Timothy Sheelys wife received 12 units of blood products during emergency surgery after the birth of their son. If it had not been for blood donors, she may not have survived that ordeal, but thanks to generous blood donors, I still have a wife and my kids still have their Mom, he said. I cant possibly thank those people in person, but I can give a little piece of me back with each donation for the greater good. Thanks to those who are able to donate and choose to donate!. The Red Cross encourages donors to start a new holiday tradition and bring ...
Just like all blood centers in the United States, the Rhode Island Blood Center is a 503c Non-Profit blood center. RIBC does not sell blood to make a profit. RIBC charges a processing fee for blood provided to hospitals. That processing fee covers the costs necessary to provide a safe and adequate blood supply which includes, but is not limited to, the cost of the medical supplies (blood bags, sterile medical supplies, medical equipment, etc.), laboratory facilities for the extensive safety testing and product (red cell, platelets and plasma) production, staffing needed to collect and test the blood, quality assurance, and getting the blood to the hospitals and patients that need it when they need it. The non-profit hospitals who use the blood to save patients lives in turn recover the costs of the processing fee by billing the recipients insurance carrier, based on applicable standards and established fees. ...

The blood bank has set an ambitious goal of 500 new donors by the end of 2017, and it needs the public to help make it happen.. The blood bank told Cayman 27 its noticed an uptick in the need for blood over the last two years. It said incidents of gun violence help exacerbate the need for donor blood, as shooting victims often require several units, which can quickly deplete the blood stock.. [Blood donors] are there for a purpose, and that blood is there to help save lives, said Medical Technologist Greg Honeyghan. Thats the purpose of any blood bank; your blood will go as far as saving somebodys life - even improving it.. The blood bank says volunteers from Rotaract and Rotary Central helped them sign up thirty potential new donors at this years Taste of Cayman.. ...
WINTERVILLE-For its support of the community and national blood supply, the American Red Cross has recognized Pitt Community College as one of its Premier Blood Partners for 2018.. Last year, the college helped the humanitarian organization collect 170 blood donations as part of a deep-rooted commitment to helping save lives in the community and wherever patients depend on the generosity of blood donors to battle illness and injury.. Pitt Community College is proud to play a role in helping the Red Cross achieve its mission of ensuring lifesaving blood is available for hospital patients in need, said Katelynn J. Speas, PCC coordinator for Student Activities and Recruitment. Just this month, Speas said the college hosted a blood drive on campus that surpassed its ...
This study will evaluate hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection in blood donors who test positive for antibodies to this virus. Most HCV-infected people do not become ill and are not aware that they have hepatitis or have had it in the past. Some infected people recover completely, whereas others remain chronically infected. The study will try to define infectivity of anti-HCV positive individuals, routes of transmission of the virus, and the number of HCV-infected persons who have evidence of liver disease.. Blood donors at the NIH Clinical Center or the Central Maryland Chapter of the American Red Cross who test positive for HCV may be eligible for this study. Participants will have a physical examination and history, including questions about socioeconomic status and current sexual practices. They will have 100 milliliters (ml) (6 tablespoons) of blood drawn at the first visit and 50 ml (3 tablespoons) drawn 3, 6, 9 and 12 months after the initial visit. Some participants may undergo ...

Blood is a very special juice [1].. One of the first blood transfusion experiments was carried out by, and recorded in the minutes of, The Royal Society of London: The experiment of transfusing the blood of one dog into another was made before the Society by Mr. King and Mr. Thomas Coxe, upon a little mastiff and a spaniel, with very good success, the former bleeding to death, and the latter receiving the blood of the other, and emitting so much of his own as to make him capable of receiving the other [2].. However, it was not until a further quarter century passed, and thanks to the work of pioneers such as Geoffrey Blundell, a surgeon at Guys Hospital who carried out the first life-saving transfusion in a woman with post-partum haemorrhage, and most importantly, Karl Landsteiner who demonstrated the existence and importance of blood groups, that blood transfusion became a clinical reality [3,4].. With the formation of national blood transfusion services, such as the Red Cross and similar ...
In the United States, the blood supply for transfusions comes from people who volunteer to donate their blood. Donors give blood at local blood banks, at community centers during blood drives, or through the American Red Cross.. When people know they are going to have an operation that might include a blood transfusion, they may choose to receive blood from one of several different places. Most patients choose to receive blood from the donated supply, but some decide to use their own blood. Providing your own blood before surgery is called autologous (pronounced: aw-TAHL-uh-gus) blood donation.. Another option for blood transfusions is called directed donation. This is when a family member or friend donates blood specifically to be used by a designated patient. For directed donation, the donor must have a blood type that is compatible with the recipients. He or she must also meet all the requirements of a regular volunteer blood donor. There is no medical or scientific evidence that blood from ...
Iron deficiency is a common problem among frequent blood donors. The Canadian Blood Services recently sought to identify donors at highest risk of iron deficiency and the feasibility of large-scale ferritin testing. Over 1.5 years, ferritin testing was performed on 12,595 blood donors (2.6% of all donors) who had passed the hemoglobin screen. Donors with low ferritin levels (,25 µg/L) were informed of their low iron stores and advised to see their health care providers to ensure iron levels returned to normal. They were also advised not to donate blood for at least 6 months. Iron deficiency (,25 µg/L ferritin) was identified in 54% of female donors and 33% of male donors. Furthermore, over 41% of repeat male donors and 65% of repeat female donors had low iron levels. Almost 60% of donors deferred for low iron returned to donate within a year, but they donated less often and had a lower return rate compared to donors with normal iron levels. Since female donors are more prone to have low iron ...
Suburban Propane, official national sponsor of the American Red Cross Summer campaign, encourages you to help save lives this summer by donating blood or platelets!. Blood and platelet donations often decline during the summer, which can make it difficult to meet the needs of patients who depend on lifesaving transfusions. We invite you to help change that by supporting the Red Cross mission of preventing and alleviating human suffering in the face of emergencies. We hope you will make an appointment to give blood or platelets. ...

Covid-19 (Testing Facilities). 2. Jackie Baillie (Dumbarton) (Lab) To ask the Scottish Government whether it will provide testing facilities in the areas with the highest incidence of Covid-19. (S5O-04349). The Cabinet Secretary for Health and Sport (Jeane Freeman) That is a really important question, if I may say so. As Ms Baillie knows, testing in Scotland is provided through two routes, which will continue. The first route is national health service controlled and is our NHS board laboratories, the academic partners that we have engaged with, and the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service. The second route is the United Kingdom Governments four-nation programme, which is made up of the drive-through centres and the mobile units. The tests that are taken in those places go to the Lighthouse lab.. We are looking very carefully at how we can introduce closer-to-home testing for individuals as part of test and protect. I hope to be able to make those decisions clear in the coming days. That ...
