BACKGROUND: A decrease in the prevalence of hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV) has been reported among voluntary blood donors in some regions of China. However, the prevalence of HCV among volunteer blood donors in other regions of China has not been reported. The aim of this study was to investigate the seroprevalence of HCV among 559,890 first-time volunteer blood donors recruited during 2004 through 2007 at the Guangzhou Blood Center, China. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS: Anti-HCV was detected using two different third-generation enzyme immunoassay kits. HCV RNA was detected using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) targeting the 5-untranslated region of HCV. RESULTS: Among 559,890 donors, 1877 (0.335%) were positive for anti-HCV. The anti-HCV+ rate was significantly higher in males than females (0.37% vs. 0.28%; p | 0.001) and significantly lower among donors living in Guangdong Province than donors who had migrated from other locations (0.30% vs. 0.40%; p | 0.001). Among the
Since the implementation of a series of blood donation safety improvements in Kenya, information about seroprevalence and determinants of transfusion transmissible infections among voluntary blood donors especially in high HIV burden regions of Homabay, Kisumu and Siaya counties remain scanty. A cross-sectional study examining HIV, syphilis, hepatitis B and C virus sero-markers and associated determinants was conducted among voluntary blood donors. Their demographic characteristics and previous risk exposure were recorded in a pre-donation questionnaire, while blood samples collected were screened for hepatitis B, hepatitis C, human immunodeficiency viruses by ELISA and RPR (syphilis), then confirmed using CMIA. Overall TTIs seroprevalence was 114 (9.4%), distributed among HIV, HBV, HCV and syphilis at 14 (1.15%), 42 (3.46%), 39 (3.21%) and 19 (1.56%), respectively, with co-infections of 3 (0.25%). There were no significant differences in proportions distributions among demographic variables. ...
Aims: To determine the seroprevalence and risk factors of human T cell Lymphotrophic viruses 1 and 2 among blood donors in Jos, Plateau state, Nigeria. Methods: A cross sectional study of 500 consecutive blood donors from the blood bank of Jos University Teaching Hospital and National Blood Transfusion Services Jos were recruited into the study. Questionnaires were administered and blood samples were collected from all participants. Sera of the blood donors were assayed for HTLV 1 and 2 using micro- enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Data was analysed using Epi Info version 3.5.1 and statistical significance was set at p-values =0.05. Results: The mean age of the study population was 29.9±8.9 years with a male - female ratio of 4.2:1. Voluntary blood donors constituted 50.6% while family replacement blood donors constituted 49.4%. The mean hemoglobin was 14.9±1.2 g/dl. Although 4% of the blood donors had different forms of exposure to risk factors, none was positive for HTLV-1 or HTLV-2. Conclusion:
Hepatitis B virus (HBV) causes significant morbidity and mortality globally primarily due to its ability to cause hepatitis, liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma. The Kenya National Blood Transfusion Services screens for Hepatitis B antibodies using the chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay method. This test does not inform on the genotypic characteristics of the virus or the actual presence of the virus in blood. This study therefore sought to determine the serologic and genotypic profiles of HBV circulating among the voluntary blood donors in Nairobi. Blood samples were collected in plain and EDTA vacutainers and tested for the Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). HBV DNA was then extracted from plasma, its overlapping P/S gene amplified and sequenced. The resulting sequences were used to analyze for the circulating genotypes and mutations within the P and S genes. Bivariate statistical analysis was used to determine the association between demographic factors and HBV infection. A

Background. Despite several decades of research, the relevance of blood donation and iron homeostasis on cardiometabolic outcomes remains unclear. Objectives. This thesis aims to reliably characterise the relevance of blood donation and iron homeostasis on cardiometabolic outcomes while overcoming some limitations of previous studies. Data sources (i) 187,725 UK blood donors drawn from the general blood donor population and linked with hospital records; (ii) up to 40,000 blood donors from the INTERVAL trial, including data on ~30 million genetic variants, 6 iron biomarkers, 7 cardiometabolic markers and serial surveys; (iii) up to 890,000 participants from the UK Biobank and 4 external genetic consortia, with data on 21 cardiometabolic outcomes. Results. In an analysis of prospective observational data from up to 187,725 donors over a maximum of 11.2 years (median 3.3 years), a higher frequency of whole blood donation was associated with a lower risk of multiple cardiometabolic outcomes. ...

Building awareness. In the past few years, YLP volunteers have focused on educating and engaging people to donate blood. They even partnered with a Chinese social media influencer to raise awareness. Tanoto said they engaged about two dozen students, but only nine were eligible to donate in 2019.. They also hosted awareness events where a phlebotomist gave a presentation on blood donation. There were also trivia games and ways for both students and their parents to get more involved.. In addition, Tanoto said they even created a mobile app that streamlined the donor screening and application process. Potential blood donors are asked questions about their travel and medical history, and the app creates a more efficient and user-friendly donor experience.. Tanoto said that they garnered a lot of interest and sign-ups from Chinese people who had never heard of blood donations. Now that the ban has been lifted, with the right effort and marketing initiatives, he hopes to increase the number of ...
Objective: While the global epidemic of diabetes mellitus in adults is well documented, there are few reliable estimates of the prevalence of diabetes and prediabetes in adolescents in the United States. We conducted systematic hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) screening in a very large adolescent blood donor population.. Methods: A screening program was implemented in which HbA1C was measured at the time of blood donation among 31,546 volunteer high-school blood donors, 16-19 years of age, who participated in school blood drives conducted by Carter BloodCare, the largest independent blood program in Texas, between 2011 and 2013. The main study measures were the prevalence of HbA1C in the prediabetes range, 5.7-6.4% (39-46 mmol/mol) and in the diabetes range, ≥ 6.5% (≥ 48 mmol/mol), in the overall cohort as well as stratified by sex, race/ethnicity, and sociodemographic characteristics.. Results: In the overall cohort, the prevalence of HbA1C in the prediabetes range was 11.0% (95% CI 10.7, 11.4), and ...

High-frequency blood donation was associated with reduced serum ferritin and increased brachial artery flow-mediated dilation compared with low-frequency blood donation. High-frequency blood donation did not improve insulin sensitivity after oral glucose loading and did not protect the vascular endothelium from the adverse effects of acute hyperglycemia after oral glucose loading compared with low-frequency blood donation. These findings indicate that increased flow-mediated dilation in high-frequency blood donors is not attributable to improved glucose tolerance.. Severe iron overload in the setting of hereditary hemochromatosis or thalassemia is associated with increased risk of diabetes related to impairment of insulin secretion and/or increased insulin resistance (5,6). In populations with severe iron overload, reduction of body iron stores with either phlebotomy or chelation therapy is associated with improved glucose tolerance (5,6). In subjects without overt iron overload, higher serum ...
Introduction and Objective: Cardiovascular risk factors in adolescents track into adulthood and are associated with morbidity and early mortality. As part of a pilot health screening program implemented by Carter BloodCare, the largest independent blood program in Texas, we screened a large adolescent blood donor population for key cardiovascular risk factors.. Methods: Blood pressure (SBP and DBP), total cholesterol and hemoglobin A1C (HbA1C) were measured in 26,063 volunteer high-school blood donors, 16-19 years of age, between 2011 and 2013. Cardiovascular risk factors were classified as high risk (SBP ≥ 140 mm Hg and/or DBP ≥ 90 mm Hg, cholesterol ≥ 200 mg/dL, HbA1C ≥ 6.5%) and intermediate or high risk (SBP ≥ 120 mm Hg and/or DBP ≥ 80 mm Hg, cholesterol ≥ 170 mg/dL, HbA1C ≥ 5.7%). The main study measures were the prevalence of 1, 2 or 3 risk factors within the same individual in the study population, with stratification by age, sex, race/ethnicity, and school district ...
A mum who survived a 100mph combined speed car accident has met one of the blood donors who helped save her life. They are supporting a National Blood Week appeal for new male blood donors after a 25% drop since 2013/14.
14 June 2005 , Geneva - Thanks to the millions of people who give blood safely and anonymously, thousands of lives are saved every day. But the chances of receiving a safe transfusion - or any transfusion at all - vary enormously from country to country. Some 60% of global blood supplies goes to 18% of the worlds people, leaving 82% of the global population inadequately covered.. World Blood Donor Day 2005 is a time to thank the worlds regular, voluntary blood donors as well as a day for personal reflection. Almost everyone can contribute to saving a life, either by becoming a regular donor or - if health reasons prevent that - by volunteering to help on blood donation days.. Safe blood is a fundamental need for the health system of any country, said Dr LEE Jong-wook, Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO). WHOs 192 Member States have recently agreed that World Blood Donor Day will be an officially recognized annual event. This will help raise awareness of the continuing ...

Repeat blood donors make up a significant proportion of the blood donor pool in the United States. Recent studies have found that frequent blood donation increases the risk for iron deficiency, which may be associated with abnormal platelet counts. Researchers at the National Institute of Health retrospectively examined platelet levels among 1273 hemoglobin (Hb)-deferred whole blood donors. Fifty-five percent (619/1128) of female and 70% (102/145) of male Hb-deferred donors had iron deficiency based on serum ferritin cut-off values of 20 µg/L and 30 µg/L, respectively. On average, iron-deficient donors had higher platelet levels than donors with a normal range of iron, but only 4.4% (32/721) had thrombocytosis (,400,000 platelet/µL). Thrombocytopenia (,150,000 platelets/µL) was also observed but was not significantly different in donors with low and normal levels of iron (1% vs. 2%, respectively). Based on 291 of 1273 donors who took oral iron tablets for at least 7 days, iron-replacement ...

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of viral infections (HBV, HCV and HIV) in serological window period in blood donors screened with nucleic acid testing (NAT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed all blood donors from July 2008 to June 2009 at the Central Blood Bank of the Mexican Institute of Social Security. Medical history was made and provided an information brochure and self-exclusion questionnaire. All blood donors were tested with serological tests (Ag-HBVs, Anti-HCV and Anti-HIV) and molecular testing with NAT for HBV, HCV and HIV. The window period was defined with the positive NAT and negative serological test. RESULTS: During one year, we evaluated 47 847 blood donors. None subject was identified with viral infection (HBV, HCV and HIV) in serological window period. Positive serological testing were found for HBV in 78 (0.2%), 318 (0.7%) for HCV and 155 (0.3%) for HIV. Positive NAT was demonstrated only in donors with positive serology: 26 of 78 with HBV, 56 of 318 with HCV and 16 ...
Blood donors attending a donation session may be deferred from donating blood due to a failure to meet low hemoglobin (Hb) thresholds. This costs the blood donor service and donors valuable time and resources. In addition, donors who are deferred may have more symptoms, and as a direct and/or indirect effect of their experience, return rates of donors deferred for low Hb are reduced, even in repeat donors. It is therefore vital that low Hb deferral (LHD) is minimized. The aim of this updated systematic review is to expand the evidence base for factors which affect a donors risk of deferral due to low Hb. Studies were identified by searching MEDLINE, Embase, The Cochrane Library, and the WHO International Clinical Trials Registry to March 2019. Demographic data, donor history, hematological/biological factors, and the primary outcome of deferral due to low Hb were extracted. Our primary outcome was deferral due to low Hb. Analyses were descriptive and quantitative; pooled odds ratios (ORs) and ...

Although all donated blood is screened for HIV antibodies, a residual risk of contamination persists due to the immunological window period before antibodies are detectable. Deferral of donors with behavioral risks for HIV is one means to reduce window period contamination; recruitment of voluntary donors from the community (versus family replacement donors) is held to be another. Contrary to expectation, a shift to community donors has not resulted in a decrease in HIV prevalence in units of blood collected by the investigators transfusion service. The investigators preliminary research indicates that some persons at elevated risk use donation as a means of testing for HIV. These test-seeking donors have high trust in the blood bank, do not know other places to receive testing, have low understanding of the immunological window period and believe it is acceptable to deny risk in order to be tested through donation. The test-seeking phenomenon may therefore threaten the safety of the blood ...

Transmission of dengue virus (DENV) through blood transfusion has been documented and hence screening for DENV during blood donation has been recently recommended by the American Association of Blood Banks and Centres of Disease Control and Prevention. DENV is endemic in the Western province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and serotypes 1, 2 and 3, but not 4, have been detected. However, little is known regarding the rates of DENV during blood donation in the kingdom. The aim of this study was therefore to measure the prevalence of dengue virus and its serotypes in eligible Saudi blood donors in the endemic Western region of KSA. This was a cross-sectional study and serum samples were collected from 910 eligible Saudi male blood donors. DENV IgM and IgG antibodies were measured serologically by ELISA while viral serotypes were detected by a single step IVD CE certified multiplex RT-PCR kit. The overall prevalence was 39 and 5.5% for IgG+ and IgM+, respectively. There were 12 (1.3%) with exclusively

This study aimed to determine the importance of raised antibodies to Helicobacter pylori in an asymptomatic population. A total of 128 asymptomatic blood donors who were seropositive for H pylori and consented to endoscopy were investigated. These subjects were from a population of 1010 blood donors screened for antibodies to H pylori. A questionnaire was completed to determine if any subjects had complained of symptoms, and they subsequently had endoscopy. Altogether 121 of 128 were positive for H pylori by histology and urease test and/or culture and all 121 had chronic active gastritis on histology. Twenty five of these subjects had peptic ulcer (20 duodenal, five gastric), a further 21 had erosive duodenitis, and two were found to have gastric cancer. H pylori associated peptic ulcer disease and duodenitis occur more frequently than previously recognised and this suggests that H pylori infection, even if asymptomatic, is of far greater clinical relevance than originally thought.. ...

Introduction: Hepatitis B Virus (HBV) and Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infection is a public health problem worldwide, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Objective: to compare the epidemiological, clinical and biological characteristics of chronic HBV and HIV infection in blood donors at the National Center for Blood Transfusion (NCBT) in Bangui. Patients and Methods: This was an 8-month analytical cross-sectional study from August 10, 2011 to April 9, 2012. During this study, we consecutively enrolled consenting blood donors of both sexes in which the search for HBsAg and HIV infection was carried out. Results: During the study period, 850 blood donors were collected. HBsAg was found in 142 donors (16.7%), of whom 55 blood donors (6.5%) were coinfected with HIV. On the other hand, HIV serology was positive in 77 blood donors (9.1%) including 55 co-infected (6.5%) with HBV. In order to better compare the risk factors, we have not included HIV-HBV coinfected patients. Only 795 blood donors were

A transfusion transmissible infection (TTI) is any infection that is transmissible from person to- person through parenteral administration of blood or blood products. The magnitude of transfusion-transmitted infections (TTI) varies from country to country depending on TTIs load in that particular population. Measuring their severity, WHO (World Health Organization) has recommended pre-transfusion blood test for Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), Hepatitis B virus (HBV), Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) and Syphilis as mandatory. The aim of the current study was to assess the trend and prevalence of TTI among blood donors in Jijiga Blood Bank between 2010 and 2013. A Retrospective cross-sectional study was conducted by reviewing the records from 2010 to 2013 at Jijiga Blood Bank. All blood donors who presented to the blood bank and screened for TTI during the study period were included. The data was collected, entered and analyzed using Epi Info 3.5.1 & Microsoft Excel 2007. The descriptive statistics were

It turned out that Jai, who was a Thalassemic patient since he was just a year old, had contracted HIV through blood transfusion at the Junagadh Civil Hospital. And it wasnt just him; 35 other Thalassemic children being given transfusion at the same hospital had become HIV-infected. Of them, eight died.. All our happiness died with our child. Who do we live for now? said 50-year-old Rafeeq Ranava, Jais father, a daily-wage labourer in Junagadh.. An IndiaSpend investigation, through a series of Right to Information (RTI) requests, has revealed that 14,474 cases of HIV through blood transfusion have been reported in India over the last seven years. It also revealed that the Indian government has yet to order a study or inquiry into this medical crisis that puts millions of lives at risk.. Not just that, there has been a 10 per cent rise in the number of such cases over the last one year - from 1,424 in 2014-15 to 1,559 in 2015-16 - according to documents obtained from that National AIDS ...

In some of the countries, transfusion of infected blood or blood products is a serious concern because the prevalence of HIV and hepatitis B and C in the blood donor populations is higher than the prevalence in the global donor population. Screened blood units have higher rates of most transfusion transmitted infections (TTIs) than the general global donor population and, according to CDC reports, the presence of TTIs remains the primary reason for discarding donated blood. Lack of safe blood has also been directly implicated in HIV transmission in Central Asia and other countries.. Safe blood is a recognized priority in target countries and a key element in their fight against HIV/AIDS and efforts to achieve Sustainable Development Goals, but the overall regulatory framework for health, including the lack of clear legal and political accountability, is still evolving in each country. This poses a particularly serious challenge for effectively addressing blood safety.. ...

I have now to consider the complaints referred to by the 1stRespondent. There is nothing to show that those matters werebrought to the notice of the 2nd Respondent, and it cannot beassumed that he acted on those matters. Further, the Petitionerwas not given an opportunity of submitting an explanation in regardto those matters. Quite apart from any explanation which thePetitioner might have given, certian comments are unavoidable.Allegations of fraud and misappropriation of Samurdhi funds wereundoubtedly serious - but if they rendered him unfit to serve asbook-keeper at the Central Blood Bank how could he have beenallowed to serve elsewhere? The NHS Blood and Transplant Authority, the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service and the Wellcome Trust have jointly announced a pioneering project to create a potentially unlimited supply of blood for transfusions using embryonic stem cells (ES cells) derived from surplus IVF embryos which are donated for research. The synthetic blood could eventually mean that clinical services would no long need to rely on obtaining a fresh supply of blood from donors since, in theory, a single embryo could supply the nations needs.. The multi-million pound project will focus on identifying ES cells that produce the o-negative blood group. Although present in just seven per cent of the population, this blood group is in high demand because it can be transfused into anyone, regardless of their blood-type.. The project will be led by Professor Marc Turner, scientific director of the Scottish National Blood Transfusion Service. Professor Turner told the BBC: We should have proof of principle in the ...
Teamsters members are critical to health care, working in hospitals, nursing homes and health care facilities, including the American Red Cross, where over 1,300 Teamsters are employed.. As blood drive cancellations increase due to coronavirus concerns, healthy individuals are needed to give blood or platelets to help patients in need. The American Red Cross has reported that tens of thousands of much-need blood donations have gone uncollected as organizations and businesses that hold blood drives have temporarily closed during this pandemic.. The Red Cross emphasizes that donating blood is a safe process and people should not hesitate to give or receive blood. The humanitarian organization is also taking additional precautions, including checking the temperature of staff and donors before entering a drive to make sure they are healthy and spacing donor beds further apart. Red Cross employees follow strict safety procedures, including wearing gloves and changing them often, wiping down all ...
DULUTH, Minn. - If youre eligible to donate blood, the American Red Cross is in need of your help this winter.. The American Red Cross urges people to share their good health and resolve to give blood regularly, beginning in January with National Blood Donor Month.. January is known as National Blood Donor Month, which officials with the American Red Cross say is the perfect time to resolve to be a regular blood donor and help save lives.. Extreme winter weather and seasonal illnesses often make it difficult for the American Red Cross to maintain a sufficient blood supply at this time of year.. According to Blood Drive Coordinator Amy Kranig, during the weeks of Christmas and New Years, about 500 fewer blood drives were hosted by volunteer sponsor groups than required to meet patient needs.. Many groups postpone blood drives during the winter holidays when travel and holiday activities may make it challenging for many donors to give. In fact, AAA estimated that a record 115.6 million Americans ...

As of Saturday, March 20, the Rhode Island Blood Center will be pausing collections of convalescent plasma. Fortunately, with more people getting vaccinated each day and hospitalizations continuing to decline, the current supply of convalescent plasma is sufficient to meet the needs of patients and hospitals. We are hopeful that the vaccination rates will continue to reduce the need for this product, but we stand ready to resume collections if necessary. The Rhode Island Blood Center began collecting convalescent plasma in April of 2020 at the height of the pandemic. We facilitated 767 convalescent plasma donations that resulted in over 1,900 units of plasma. Through New York Blood Center Enterprises, our network of blood centers, we collect nearly 100,000 donations that were distributed to more than 40 states and to several other countries. This would not have been possible without a giving community of donors who recovered from COVID-19 and were willing to share their plasma to help someone ...
When disaster strikes in the United States, there is one organization that is on everyones mind, the American Red Cross. It has operated for over a hundred years on the simple premise of delivering aid to those in need. The organization does this by reacting effectively and efficiently to natural and man-made disasters and delivering humanitarian aid to those affected. In recent years, though, the American Red Cross has come under scrutiny for mismanagement and ineffective disaster relief. The purpose of this paper is to use ethical standards of the nonprofit sector to evaluate and explain the performance of the American Red Cross in recent years. Considering outside factors like climate change and public opinion, a conclusion can be drawn.
Facebook had in October launched a new blood donations feature, starting in India, to make it easier for people to donate blood.. There are now more than 4 million blood donors signed up on Facebook in India, said Naomi Gleit, Facebooks vice-president of social good.. In addition to enabling people in need to connect to blood donors, our tools also allow organisations to connect to donors more efficiently, she said in a blog post.. Gleit said hospitals, blood banks and non-profits can create voluntary blood donation events on Facebook, and nearby donors are notified of the opportunities to donate blood.. In early 2018, we will expand blood donations to Bangladesh, where, like India, there are thousands of posts from people looking for blood donors every week, she added.. Facebook users in India had crossed the 240 million mark in July, surpassing the 240 million in the US, according to a media report.. As of September, Facebook had 1.37 billion daily - and 2.07 billion monthly - active ...

HUH has been collaborating with ZNBTS since 2008. During the startup of a new project in 2014 between HUH and NRCSCBTS, several strengths and weaknesses was revealed in the national services that were different from ZNBTS. The current project started in 2014 and was aiming to strengthen the blood transfusion services at KCH with funds from a private donation.. In 2016 a triangular collaboration between Norway, Zanzibar and Nepal was established, with an exchange of personnel between all three. This would create a unique opportunity for ZNBTS and NRCSCBTS to learn from each other a setting where many of the operational challenges are the same. With the link to a modern transfusion service at HUH, and the hospital setting at KCH, this is assumed to model future capacity strengthening projects in transfusion medicine.. Zanzibar National Blood Transfusion Services (ZNBTS) has a highly developed and well-functioning quality management system, and works hard to increase total volume of blood units ...
Such was the situation in which Neil Reynolds and his team found themselves when they were project-managing the new £6m, 4,000-user, 650-million-data-item National Blood Service IT system, Pulse. Everyone - Computer Weekly included - seemed to be baying for their blood. That was because the prognosis for Pulse was not good. First, the project had to integrate and replace 12 existing - and different - systems from nine different suppliers, spread across 12 regions. Secondly, it had to face internal political battles as the regional authorities resisted centralisation. Thirdly, because it was the National Blood Service, it was literally a life-or-death system. And fourthly, it was the first public sector IT project to enjoy the Private Finance Initiative (PFI). Before work could start, there were delays. Not only did PFI mean that the 20-page business case had to be rewritten as 400 pages, but the contract took an age to award. Then the hard work started, says Reynolds. The strategy was one ...
Iván García, 6 March 2017 - A sloppy piece of cardboard painted with a crayon announces the sale of a discolored house in the neighborhood of La Vibora, 30 minutes by car south of Havana.. If Amanda, the owner, who is raving poor, manages to sell the house for the equivalent of 40,000 dollars, she intends to buy two small apartments, one for her daughter and the other for her son.. The house urgently needs substantial repairs. But Amandas family doesnt have the money needed to undertake the work. Frank, 36, her son, is the custodian of a secondary school and earns a monthly salary of 365 Cuban pesos, around 17 dollars, and to help support the family, hes a blood donor.. The Cuban regime doesnt pay for these donations. Frank, who gives blood up to two times a month, should receive some 10 pounds of meat, a half-kilo of fish and three pounds of chicken.. There are always delays. Its a pain. In every municipality theres a warehouse assigned to distribute this food to the blood donors. But ...
Since the discovery of blood circulation and transfusion, there has been an insatiable demand for voluntary blood donations throughout the world. However, gathering blood donors has never been easy because eligible donors constitute only a fraction of the general population and are often reluctant to donate. This is especially challenging in underprivileged countries of sub-Saharan Africa such as Malawi whose nationally run blood transfusion service struggles to maintain hospital blood banks. As a result, hospitals turn to their local communities for directed donations. A retrospective analysis from January 2014 to June 2016 of directed blood donor data from two hospitals in the Kasungu District of Malawi was conducted. The analysis of 2134 donations was carried out with respect to sex, age, hemoglobin concentration, blood group, and presence of transfusion-transmissible infections. On average, donors were 30 years of age and predominately male. Blood group O+ constituted more than half of all directed
