This is a cross-sectional study conducted in the National Blood Transfusion Center during the period from the 1st of November 2005 through November 2006. The of the study was to assess the Knowledge of a sample of donors and non-donors attending the National Blood Transfusion Center in Baghdad regarding the information about blood donation. A total of 500 individuals were interviewed, 292 were donors and 208 were non-donors. Data were collected using specially designed questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of thirty questions assessing the knowledge regarding blood donation. Regarding the total scores of the answers; only 7 (2.4%) of donors but none of non-donors, had got good scores (,75%). BACKGROUND: A decrease in the prevalence of hepatitis C virus antibody (anti-HCV) has been reported among voluntary blood donors in some regions of China. However, the prevalence of HCV among volunteer blood donors in other regions of China has not been reported. Aims: To determine the seroprevalence and risk factors of human T cell Lymphotrophic viruses 1 and 2 among blood donors in Jos, Plateau state, Nigeria. Methods: A cross sectional study of 500 consecutive blood donors from the blood bank of Jos University Teaching Hospital and National Blood Transfusion Services Jos were recruited into the study. The Kenya National Blood Transfusion Services screens for Hepatitis B antibodies using the chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay method. This test does not inform on the genotypic characteristics of the virus or the actual presence of the virus in blood. Repeat blood donors make up a significant proportion of the blood donor pool in the United States. Recent studies have found that frequent blood donation increases the risk for iron deficiency, which may be associated with abnormal platelet counts. Researchers at the National Institute of Health retrospectively examined platelet levels among 1273 hemoglobin (Hb)-deferred whole blood donors. Fifty-five percent (619/1128) of female and 70% (102/145) of male Hb-deferred donors had iron deficiency based on serum ferritin cut-off values of 20 µg/L and 30 µg/L, respectively. OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of viral infections (HBV, HCV and HIV) in serological window period in blood donors screened with nucleic acid testing (NAT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: We assessed all blood donors from July 2008 to June 2009 at the Central Blood Bank of the Mexican Institute of Social Security. Medical history was made and provided an information brochure and self-exclusion questionnaire. All blood donors were tested with serological tests (Ag-HBVs, Anti-HCV and Anti-HIV) and molecular testing with NAT for HBV, HCV and HIV. Transmission of dengue virus (DENV) through blood transfusion has been documented and hence screening for DENV during blood donation has been recently recommended by the American Association of Blood Banks and Centres of Disease Control and Prevention. DENV is endemic in the Western province of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA) and serotypes 1, 2 and 3, but not 4, have been detected. However, little is known regarding the rates of DENV during blood donation in the kingdom. The aim of this study was therefore to measure the prevalence of dengue virus and its serotypes in eligible Saudi blood donors in the endemic Western region of KSA. This was a cross-sectional study and serum samples were collected from 910 eligible Saudi male blood donors. This study aimed to determine the importance of raised antibodies to Helicobacter pylori in an asymptomatic population. A total of 128 asymptomatic blood donors who were seropositive for H pylori and consented to endoscopy were investigated. These subjects were from a population of 1010 blood donors screened for antibodies to H pylori. A questionnaire was completed to determine if any subjects had complained of symptoms, and they subsequently had endoscopy. Altogether 121 of 128 were positive for H pylori by histology and urease test and/or culture and all 121 had chronic active gastritis on histology.
