Bird fancier's lung is a type of hypersensitivity pneumonitis caused by bird droppings. The lungs become inflamed with granuloma formation. Bird fancier's lung (BFL), also called bird-breeder's lung and pigeon-breeder's lung, is a subset of hypersensitivity pneumonitis (HP). This disease is caused by the exposure to avian proteins present in the dry dust of the droppings and sometimes in the feathers of a variety of birds. Birds such as pigeons, parakeets, cockatiels, shell parakeets (budgerigars), parrots, turtle doves, turkeys and chickens have been implicated. People who work with birds or own many birds are at risk. Bird hobbyists and pet store workers may also be at risk. This disease is an inflammation of the alveoli in the lungs. Initial symptoms are breathlessness especially after sudden exertion or when exposed to temperature change and can be very similar to asthma, hyperventilation syndrome or pulmonary embolism. One of the defining characteristics of bird fanciers lung is that many ...

A large (33 inches) waterbird, the Double-crested Cormorant is most easily identified by its black body and wings, long hooked bill, and orange chin patch. This species may be separated from the related Great Cormorant ( Phalacrocorax carbo) by that species' larger size and large white chin patch, from the related Neotropic Cormorant (Phalacrocorax brasilianus) by that species smaller size and small white chin patch, and from the similar-looking Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) by that species' longer neck and tail. Male and female Double-crested Cormorants are similar to one another in all seasons. The Double-crested Cormorant breeds in scattered locations along the Pacific coast of North America from Alaska to Baja California, along the Atlantic coast from Newfoundland to Florida, in the northern Great Plains, and in the West Indies. Southern breeding populations tend to be non-migratory, while northern breeding populations migrate south to the coasts, the interior southeastern U.S., and Mexico. ...

The activity of lipoamide dehydorgenase (E.C.1.6.4.3) was measured in arterial homogenates from very young pigeons (5-8 weeks old) known to differ in their susceptibility to atherosclerosis. The activity of the arterial enzyme was significantly lower in the atherosclerosis-susceptible White Carneau pigeons than it was in the atherosclerosis-resistant Show Racer pigeons. Lipoamide dehydrogenase is a component of the pyruvate dehydrogenase and alpha-ketoglutarate multienzyme complexes. The first complex catalyzes the conversion of pyruvate to oxaloacetate via acetyl-CoA, and this reaction represents a crucial link between glycolysis and the Krebs cycle. The second complex is essential for the oxidative breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and amino acids via the Krebs cycle. Reduced activity of these complexes, resulting from low activity of lipoamide dehydrogenase, favors reduction of pyruvate to lactate and a shift to glycolysis. This situation is in accord with other results obtained in avian and ...
Homing pigeon is a variety of domestic pigeon (Columba livia domestica) derived from the rock pigeon, selectively bred to find its way home over extremely long distances (up to 1,800 km). The wild rock pigeon has an innate homing ability, meaning that it will generally return to its nest and mate. Their average flying speed over moderate distances is around 80 km/h (50 miles per hour) but speeds of up to 140 km/h (90 miles per hour) have been observed in top racers for short distances. Homing pigeons are called messenger or carrier pigeons when they are used to carry messages. Pigeons can find their way back from distant places they have never visited before. Most researchers believe that homing ability is based on a "map and compass" model, with the compass feature allowing birds to orient and the map feature allowing birds to determine their location relative to a goal site (home loft). While the compass mechanism appears to rely on the sun, some researchers believe that the map mechanism ...
The Havana Brown was the result of a planned breeding between Siamese and domestic black cats, by a group of cat fanciers in England, in the 1950s. Early breeders introduced a Siamese type Russian Blue into their breeding. However, using current genetic testing, it is believed that almost none remain in the gene pool. It has been documented that self-brown cats were shown in Europe in the 1890s, one name given to these was the Swiss Mountain Cat. These disappeared until post-World War II, with the most likely explanation that the Siamese Cat Club of Britain discouraged their breeding. The Swiss Mountain Cat was never used in the breeding programs of the modern Havana Brown. However, they likely share genetics inherited from the Siamese. In the early 1950s a group of English cat fanciers began working together with an intent to create a self brown cat of Foreign Type. They called themselves "The Havana Group", later to become "The Chestnut Brown Group". This group of breeders created the ...

Amylase An enzyme that is found in saliva and pancreatic secretions (see pancreas). Amylase helps the body to digest dietary starch, breaking it down into smaller components, such as the sugars glucose and maltose. Amsler chart A diagnostic tool used by ophthalmologists to detect changes in the retina, particularly those changes that indicate macular degeneration. A typical Amsler chart consists of a grid of black lines on a white background. In an individual with retinal changes, the lines may appear distorted. CAUSES Alveolitis is commonly caused by an allergic reaction to inhaled dust of animal or plant origin, as in farmer's lung (caused by spores from mouldy hay), bagassosis (caused by spores from mouldy sugar-cane residue), and pigeon fancier's lung (caused by particles from bird droppings). This type of alveolitis is known as extrinsic allergic alveolitis. alprostadil A prostaglandin drug used to minimize the effects of congenital (present from birth) heart defects in newborn babies prior ...

Media contact: Jennifer Holton, 517-284-5724. LANSING - This past spring poultry farmers across the United States were affected by a highly pathogenic avian influenza virus, which has been documented as the largest domestic animal health disaster in U.S. history.. Today, the Michigan departments of Agriculture and Rural Development and Natural Resources reminds domestic poultry owners to be aware of the disease risks present during the fall migration of wild birds. Wild birds can carry various diseases that may spread to poultry operations if the wild and domestic birds have an opportunity to intermingle.. Avian influenza viruses have been found in many wild bird species including shorebirds, quail and pheasants, but are most often found in migratory waterfowl like ducks, geese and swans.. Although no cases of HPAI ...
To evaluate transmission dynamics, we exposed 25 bird species to West Nile virus (WNV) by infectious mosquito bite. We monitored viremia titers, clinical outcome, WNV shedding (cloacal and oral), seroconversion, virus persistence in organs, and susceptibility to oral and contact transmission. Passeriform and charadriiform birds were more reservoir competent (a derivation of viremia data) than other species tested. The five most competent species were passerines: Blue Jay (Cyanocitta cristata), Common Grackle (Quiscalus quiscula), House Finch (Carpodacus mexicanus), American Crow (Corvus brachyrhynchos), and House Sparrow (Passer domesticus). Death occurred in eight species. Cloacal shedding of WNV was observed in 17 of 24 species, and oral shedding in 12 of 14 species. We observed contact transmission among four species and oral in five species. Persistent WNV infections were found in tissues of 16 surviving birds. Our observations shed light on transmission ecology of WNV and will benefit ...

The Illinois Department of Public Health has confirmed the first human West Nile virus case reported in northern Illinois for 2009. The Chicago Department of Public Health reported a woman in her 70s with onset of illness in late August.. "As we head into fall it's important for people to continue to protect themselves against West Nile virus. Mosquitoes that typically carry West Nile virus remain active until the first couple of hard freezes, or night's below 28 degrees Fahrenheit," Dr. Damon T. Arnold, Director of the Illinois Department of Public Health said. People should continue to protect themselves against mosquitoes by wearing insect repellent and by trying to reduce any standing water around their homes.". To date, 30 counties have reported mosquito batches, birds, horses or humans testing positive for West Nile virus. The first human case of West Nile virus in Illinois this year was reported on August 31. So far there are three confirmed cases of West Nile virus in Illinois, one in ...
Recently, multiple spillover events between domesticated poultry and wild birds have been reported for several avian viruses. This phenomenon highlights the importance of the livestock-wildlife interface in the possible emergence of novel viruses. The aim of the current study was to investigate the potential spillover and epidemiological links of infectious bursal disease virus (IBDV) between wild birds and domestic poultry. To this end, twenty-eight cloacal swabs were collected from four species of free-living Egyptian wild birds (i.e. mallard duck, bean goose, white-fronted goose and black-billed magpie). Genetic and phylogenetic analysis of three positive isolates revealed that the IBDV/USC-1/2019 strain clustered with previously reported very virulent IBDV (vvIBDV) Egyptian isolates. Interestingly, two other wild bird-origin isolates (i.e. IBDV/USC-2/2019 and IBDV/USC-3/2019) grouped with a vaccine strain that is being used in commercial poultry. In conclusion, our results revealed the ...

Native and non-native species have damaged and threatened cultural resources at Casa Grande Ruins National Monument since the early 1930s. Even mammals and birds that might not normally be considered pests threaten archeological sites by burrowing, nesting, feeding, and roosting on or near the sites. Species that particularly threaten cultural resources and human health and safety include round-tailed ground squirrels (Spermophilus tereticaudus), house finches (Carpodacus mexicanus), common pigeons (Columba livia), and European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris).. The acidic urine and fecal matter of birds damages the monument's archeological sites by reacting with their alkaline walls. This is especially a concern at areas of animal concentration, such as nesting and roosting sites. Burrowing mammals dig up archeological resources, in some cases exposing them to water, wind, and theft, and disrupt the artifact layering. Rodent burrows can also undermine the bases of prehistoric structures. In some ...

An important notice on our inventory and shipping of mushroom logs: Knox County Tennessee (our home sweet home) is currently under a hardwood firewood export ban as the result of Emerald Ash Borer infestation in East Tennessee. The regulation restricts the movement of firewood of all hardwood (non-coniferous) species. Our logs are harvested fresh, plugged quickly, and stored in our protected demonstration garden, and we believe them to be unaffected by the EAB. Although our logs are not firewood and are not exposed to firewood lots, we still feel it is responsible for us to abide by this movement restriction. Therefore, for the foreseeable future, mushroom logs will not be available for shipping. Although this page lists the product as sold out, we still maintain a stock of this product at our demonstration garden and showroom in Knoxville. Customers are more than welcome to stop by for local pickup and purchase.. Now for more on mushroom logs.... Folks have been growing shiitake mushrooms from ...
This 49 year old patient was admitted with several weeks of worsening dyspnoea and dry cough. He had no history of previous respiratory illness. Further history revealed that several months prior he and his wife installed a hot tub in their bathroom. His HRCT chest showed widespread areas of ground glass opacity. Bronchoalveolar washings grew mycobacterium avium intracellulare (MAI). The diagnosis of hot tub lung was made and the patient's symptoms rapidly resolved with corticosteroids. Interestingly, his wife was admitted with similar symptoms a few weeks later.. Hot tub lung is a hypersensitivity pneumonitis to MAI. MAI grows well in high water temperatures and is inhaled when the organism is aerosolised by the bubbles and steam generated from the hot tub. Poor hot tub maintenance with infrequent cleaning and changing of the filters contributes to the disease.. Hypersensitivity pneumonitis (extrinsic allergic alveolitis) is a hypersensitivity reaction to inhaled antigens. In the acute setting ...
Finch trichomonosis, caused by Trichomonas gallinae, emerged in the Canadian Maritime provinces in 2007 and has since caused ongoing mortality in regional purple finch (Carpodacus purpureus) and American goldfinch (Carduelis tristis) populations. Trichomonas gallinae was isolated from (1) finches and rock pigeons (Columbia livia) submitted for post-mortem or live-captured at bird feeding sites experiencing trichomonosis mortality; (2) bird seed at these same sites; and (3) rock pigeons live-captured at known roosts or humanely killed. Isolates were characterized using internal transcribed spacer (ITS) region and iron hydrogenase (Fe-hyd) gene sequences. Two distinct ITS types were found. Type A was identical to the UK finch epidemic strain and was isolated from finches and a rock pigeon with trichomonosis; apparently healthy rock pigeons and finches; and bird seed at an outbreak site. Type B was obtained from apparently healthy rock pigeons. Fe-hyd sequencing revealed six distinct subtypes. The ...

A 41-year-old automobile paint sprayer showed the clinical features of hypersensitivity pneumonitis 1 week after he had begun to work with paint materials containing toluene diisocyanate. His symptoms began 6 to 8 hours after exposure to the agent and spontaneously disappeared by the next morning. He had diffuse, fine reticulonodular shadows on a chest roentgenogram and a restrictive impairment of pulmonary function. Immunoglobulin G antibody to toluene diisocyanate-human serum albumin was present in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and sera; IgA antibody was present only in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid. Also, the patient had sensitized bronchoalveolar lymphocytes to toluene diisocyanateserum albumin. The histologic findings suggested hypersensitivity pneumonitis. The results of bronchoalveolar lavage, which was repeated on four separate occasions, showed lymphocytosis and a predominance of suppressorcytotoxic T cells. The findings from serial determinations of humoral antibodies showed no changes ...
Seesaw nystagmus is characterized by cyclic eye movements with a conjugate torsional component and a dissociated vertical component. In the first half of the cycle, one eye elevates and intorts, whereas the other eye depresses and extorts. The pattern is reversed in the remaining half of the cycle. We describe a patient with a giant pituitary adenoma who developed pendular seesaw nystagmus. Disturbance in the visuovestibular system is postulated to contribute to this form of seesaw nystagmus. Lesions compressing the optic chiasm and the accessory optic system could interrupt the transmission of retinal error signals to the inferior olivary nucleus and the interstitial nucleus of Cajal, thus interfering with the adaptive mechanism of the vestibulo-ocular reflex and leading to pendular seesaw nystagmus ...

There are three components to the normal droppings. The first is the fecal (or stool) component. For most pet birds, this is the green to brown, solid part of the droppings. The color may vary with the type of food being fed. The second component is the urate component, or the solid urine component. Unlike most animals, birds, in their attempt to conserve water, produce a solid urate component to the dropping. The urates are usually white. The third component, which is not often recognized by owners, is a clear liquid urine component. It is important for owners to become familiar with their bird's normal droppings, as evaluation of the droppings is an important clue to illness or wellness in pet birds.. ...
The development of the intestine and early establishment of commensal bacteria is important for rapid growth and enteric disease resistance of the modern broiler. Three studies measured the impact of yeast derivatives in diets of broilers. The objective of the first study was to determine if yeast products alone or in combination effected performance or gut morphology of broilers during a mild coccidia challenge. Day-old Cobb 500 chicks were placed in floor pens on litter seeded with coccidia and fed diets with or without yeast products. The objectives of the second and third studies were to 1) evaluate the effect of feeding cecal droppings collected from heavy (HW) or low weight (LW) broilers on performance and 2) to determine if dietary supplementation with yeast derivatives would effect growth and gut morphology in broilers fed the cecal droppings from HW or LW populations. Cobb 500 chicks were divided into two groups (HW or LW microflora; n=1400/group) and given access to the cecal droppings ...
ADVANCES IN THE NUTRITION AND MANAGEMENT OF THE MALE AND FEMALE BROILER BREEDER R M GOUS SUMMARY Poultry nutritionists have based the feed requirements of broiler breeder hens on the principles designed for the feeding of commercial laying pullets because of the lack of information specific to these birds. The practice of restricting the feed intake of broiler breeders during both the rearing and the laying periods differs from the that of feeding commercial pullets, and was introduced as a necessity because of the rapid growth rate of broilers, but there is still debate about the reason for the benefit derived from this practice. The extent to which feed should be restricted; the optimum time of release from the restriction programme; the basis on which the amino acid requirements for maintenance and for egg output are calculated; and the optimum intake of energy .. at various stages of the produ.ction period, arc all as pects 0 f broiler breeder nutr itron that require further defi nitive ...
